news at six." good evening everyone, i'm ron steele. and i'm amanda goodman. thanks for joining us. 29 people -- including passengers and crew -- make an emergency landing in waterloo. emergency crews were on scene in minutes. going out to the airport, we've the plane took off from sioux falls, south dakota and was on its way to chicago. pilots had to make an emergency landing in waterloo when there was smoke in the cockpit. kwwl's macleod hageman joins us live from waterloo regional airpot with the latest. mac? what's scary -- is passengers tell me they felt something was wrong before leaving south dakota. here's a look at the plane that had to make an emergency landing this afternoon -- due to a smelled

started to get extremely hot. one passenger tells me something didn't feel right -- and the flight felt like the longest 22 wrong before we were taking off, because we were taxying for a while, and then we heard a really loud noise, and then we took off." jodie tells me she was reluctant to get on a second plane -- and thought about renting a car to drive to chicago. but the passengers and crew were able to leave waterloo on a second plane -- after four and she says she's relieved to we've got you covered live in according to american airlines officials -- the plane was at nearly half capacity -- during the flight. the temperature isn't the only thing going up today - wind gusts are picking up as well.

of this semi is smashed. and here's another look at the crash. there's no word on if there are any injuries. firefighters and family gathering today to remember a young eastern iowa man who died in a car crash. 22-year-old jedidiah wilson died when the car he was in crashed with another car near fairbank last saturday. he was airlifted to a hospital where he was pronounced dead. today, dozens came to his funernal in fairbank to honor wilson. he was a volunteer firefighter at the oran fire department. kwwls olivia mancino just returned from oran--she joins us now live i stopped by the oran fire department following the funeral, where his fellow firefighters gathered to remember him. almost immediately it was easy to see how many people he's impacted. on a windy february thursday, dozens of cars and firetrucks line the streets of this church as they mourn the could just touch anybody he talked to" saying 22 year old jed

remembered wilson was also a board member of the trail blazers snowmobile club they held a tribute ride to his visitation last night we have photos of the ride on our website kwwl dot com. we've got you covered...kwwl news. officials are still investigating the crash. high schools state wide may soon be impacted by a new bill aiming what they are calling, 'collision sports.' those sports in iowa would kwwl's kristin rogers talking today, with an athletic trainer who was a part of drafting the from high schools across the state, kristin? that's right and many of the larger schools i spoke with said this will not directly impact them because they already fit the bill so to say, having trainers on hand.

small schools who would have to find a way to make it feasible. high school sports bring tradition and excitment to many communities but soon, there may be changes coming in what schools will be (cg: brad floy/ secretary for iowa atheltic trainers' society) "if you can afford to have these sports then you need to have an athletic trainer or health care provider on site to have them." floy helped draft a new bill that would require an athletic trainer provided by the home team at all varisty football, wrestling and soccer contest. as a trainer himself at the university of iowa, he says soccer, wrestling are the ones where you see the most concussions, the most severe injuries so we're starting with also trying to narrow it down for the cost issue as well." cost being one of the largest issues, floy tells me it's estimated to cost a school 25- hundred to 5 thousand dollars a year just to provide someone at home contest. (cg: scott kibby/ athletic director at iowa city west high school) "i'd say it's a big need to have somebody at games for all sprained ankle or concussion." he tells me they see a lot more "other" injuries than they do concussions, however i'm told concussions are one of the driving forces of this bill. i spoke with the activities director of the small school of adair- casey today on the phone, he told me he doesn't know if the bill is feasible because of it's price tag. we've got you covered live, kristin rogers...kwwl news. floy told us they would like to expand the bill to all sports first to try and keep the cost

continuing coverage - witnesses living in the neighborhood of last nights' shots fired incident are getting frustrated with the recurring incidents of violence. police responding to shots fired in the 15-hundred block of woodmayr drive in waterloo. at least 20 shell casings were found and police say some homes were hit by bullets. no injuries were reported in the incident. one witness who has lived in the neighborhood for more than forty "it's too big of a job to move. it would be easier to stand out in the middle of the street and get shot." police are still investigating the shooting - no arrests are made yet. an iowa academy, being investigated for sexual assault allegations, is coming under more fire - this time for delayed incident reports. lee county sheriff's records show that dozens of reports about runaways, assaults and suicide attempts by troubled teens at midwest academy in keokuk often were

happened. the sheriff says in some incidents, law enforcement was notified only after the state human services department got involved. a central iowa school goes into lockdown after a parent made threats against staff members. officials say the man walked into the maxwell school wednesday morning and confronted the principal. the principal thinks the man was upset over an incident happening on the bus. when the man left, the school arrested. the man is currently being held on a warrant from another state. a cedar rapids woman is forced to euthanize her dog after it was attack by two other dogs. pinscher pomeranian -- was less than a year old. her owner -- diana hogan -- said the pup was outside on a leash when the two loose dogs attacked. one of (diana hogan/cedar rapids) "my husband went to unleash sabrina anne and the pitbull
