neighborhood full of families take a look at this video from this morning.. a lot of kids had to walk around the police tape to get to their school bus... police are still investigating the incident... no one has been arrested at this time... we've got you covered live in the newsroom... amanda gilbert...kwwl news. witnesses tell us a lot of people came out to help perkins before officers arrived. cedar rapids police say this was the first homicide of the year. one person is shot near a des moines elementary school. police say the shooting happened shortly after eight last night and one person had to be taken to the hospital. we don't know how they're doing -- but at last check -- no arrests have been made. let's go to storm track seven meteorologist eileen loan now for

"i mean that is a big thing for a very good program, very successful in the mid-major realm, but obviously struggling on the national level to keep pace with iowa and iowa state in the state of iowa." uni is scheduled to make the announcement at 2 this afternoon. former iowa state head coach -- paul rhoads accepts a new coaching position rhoads will join the university of arkansas --razorbacks coaching staff as a defensive back's coach. rhoads spent seven seasons with the iowa state cyclones and was fired in novemeber after the sixth consecutive losing season. decision 2016. it's another win for donald trump. he won the republican caucus in nevada. it's the third sraight contest trump has won overwhelmingly.

"winning, winning, winning." his competitors are pushing the number of states yet to come -- super tuesday is next week -- we're going to do very well in to be an amazing 2 months. we might not even need the 2 months folks, to be honest. trump won nearly 50 percent of the vote. the race for second...much closer. marco rubio got 24 percent...with ted cruz behind at 21. looking at the democrats now...hillary clinton and bernie sanders taking their cases to voters in south carolina. both appearing at c-n-n's democratic presidential town hall in columbia. the democratic primary in that state is this weekend. we're still waiting for president obama's supreme court nominee -- but the senate doesn't care who it is.

republicans signing a letter. they will not hold hearings on a supreme court nominee. president obama plans to name a successor to justice scalia, who died earlier this month. senator grassley chairs the committee and his office sent us the letter...which reads in part... this committee will not hold hearings on any supreme court nominee until after our next president is sworn in on january 20, 2017. rick perry is cleared in court. the highest criminal court in texas has dismissed the second and final felony charge against the former governor. this likely ends the case against him. perry was indicted by a grand jury in 2014 on abuse of power witch hunt", and says the criminal indictment helped tank his 2016 presidential run. continuing coverage testimony continues today in the murder trial of an iowa man. the boone police officer is the first to take the witness stand today. alexander fazzino is charged with murder in the

her body was found in their home in boone in 2012. her grandfather founded the fareway grocery chain. the case was moved to winneshiek county because of pre-trial publicity. both sides agree that emily fazzino did have a previous addiction to prescription drugs. but prosecutors say they'll try to show she was on the path to recovery. they'll also try to show she was planning to leave her husband -- mainly after police were called (daniel kolacia, boone county attorney) "you're going to hear was slowly getting stronger at this time, standing up to alex, wanted to get away." on the other hand -- the defense plans to show emily as an addict. they claim she had a history of fainting from withdrawl symptoms -- which they believe led to her accidental drowning. about 40 eastern iowans are in des moines right now-- voicing their concerns with the state's medicaid privatization... they group says, it's not surprised iowa got federal approval to move forward with the plan...

and just like this my hands were on my head." the man has-second degree burns on his leg, but is able to walk. more people are trying to find time to get to the car wash this week. one woman is just trying to find her diamond ring. she lost it at a car wash in "i was looking for change in there, but i come across out of the dirt there's a big ring just diamonds shining in every direction." the woman called -- but unfortunately, spoke to someone who works there -- who didn't know it had been found. now, the owner hopes she calls back. the pittsburgh zoo announces it's newest arrival the zoo welcomed this leopard cub to the family in a video posted on its facebook page.

friday. wind switches to the southwest saturday, ushering in upper 40s and 50s story today. not necessarily in eastern iowa -- but in the south. at least three people are dead as tornadoes rip across southern states. people driving down the road capturing this video of one. you can see the twister tearing through right in front of traffic. one of at least seven confimed tornadoes hitting lousiana and hard. we walked to the glass tornado coming down going...looked like crossing the road there and the doors stared sucking in where we were at back there." at least 30 people in another area of louisiana were hurt during the storms. here's a look at some of the damage. you can see debris everywhere. downed trees and power lines...plus

a look now at the damage to a gym in louisiana. it appears as though the roof is missing and the sides of the building are gone. concerns over the zika virus take center stage in our nation's capital today. a senate committee holding a hearing this morning, talking about the latest on the spread of zika. a representative from the c-d-c was expected to testify. cases of the virus are reported in popular vacation spots like the carribbean and central america. pregnant woman are advised not to travel to those places. those who do travel should take precaution....includi ng some university of iowa students who are going to mexico city for a keeping us updated in the class prevent it and how we can be careful when we're in mexico city." the virus is spread through mosquito bites. the iowa department of public health isn't too concerned about the virus spreading here -- but worries about individual

a citation from the u-s department of agriculture... because of a runaway research goat... william the goat escaped from research handlers last month...he was eventually found and taken back to the school. the usda is citing the school is because of how they reported the animal's escape. this is the only citation the school has received since william escaped. a mistake leads to five cars being damaged. according to police an elderly man mistakenly put his car in drive in the crossroads hy- vee parking lot. he wasn't able to stop before hitting five other cars parked in the handicap section. a landmark ruling against a huge company. johnson and johnson is being ordered to pay 72 million dollars to the family of a woman who died from ovarian cancer. a jury linked the cancer to her use of talcum powder for decades. "her whole fight was not just for her, but for so many other women. and that's why i continue that's why i continue this fight." the verdict came down in

johnson and johnson faces claiming that -- in an effort to boost sales -- it failed to warn customers that its talc-based products could cause cancer. a company spokeswoman says -- they firmly believe the safety of its products is supported by decades of scientific evidence. a bizzare story -- a four-year-old boy was sentenced by a military court to life in prison... by mistake. in this video, you can see the boy's father pleading with authorities to resolve the issue. this happening in egypt. documents show his son was only a year old when a murder happened. the military says in a statement, the boy's name was mixed up with a man who murdered a 16- year-old boy. guns take center stage in the iowa legislature. lawmakers discussing a number of bills. as stephanie moore reports, they address everything from suppressors and age limits --to privacy regulations... it's considered an

fire arm to limit the sound...suppressors, which are legal in 41 other states, was debated on the house floor...some lawmakers hoping to make iowa number 42. "i think they are a tremendous device, they are for hearing protection, a suppressor itself is not a weapon, its an accessory thats put on a firearm just to cut down the noise as a hearing protection device." representative terry baxter introduced the bill...he downrange away from the shooter and help protect the shooter's hearing...but those in opposition see it as a weapon. also debated---how old a child should be to shoot a gun-currently in iowa, children must be 14

"while most parents would not allow their two year old to weld a revolver, we pass laws for those parents who lack the parenting skills needed to protect their own children.'
