storm in the will determine our temperatures, to monitor this situation, and bring you up to date with the latest on kwwl. the big story this morning: a shooting at a business in kansas. four people dead -- including the gunman. 14 others hurt. authorities say the shooter went inside a business in hesstn, kanns anddstarted firinn the business is a lawn care company -- where the gunman worked. "he yelled hey, and then boom, boom, boom and proceeded to go into the building." five victims are in critical condition. the shooter was killed by the first officer able to get there. "this is a horrible situation, particular law enforcement here place and saved multiple, multiple lives. a hero, as far

law enforcement then surrounded the suspect's home. a person inside -- believed to be the shooter's roommate -- refused to let officers inside. investigators in michigan are still trying to learn what led up to a mass shootingngthere. six people were killed when jason dalton allegedly went on a five-hour shooting rampage on saturday. last night -- a vigil for the victims. new video shows a confrontation between a man with a machete and police in houston. police say the man was angry when he missed his chance to buy a bus ticket. he confrontd deputies -- and swung the machete at them. investigators say he was shot this morning, a professor is out of a job after run-ins with student journalists. the university of missouri fired melissa click. she was cut loose for interfering with journalists who were trying to cover campus protests last year. in one confrontation -- she called fr some muscle to

"i think as an individual that what occurred was so damaging to and for the columbia community." she can appeal the decision, but has said she regrets what she did. a grand jury will now hear the case involving an n-f-l quarterback. johnny manziel is accused of attacking his ex- girlfriend colleen. manziel plays for the browns. police in texas has passed the case on to the courts. continuing coverage of a murder trial in winneshiek county. family members take the stand. alex fazzino is charged in the death of his wife, emily. her body was ffund in their home in boone. the case was moved to decorah because of pre-trial publicity. emily's sister -- ammie -- says she didn't know anything about emily's addiction to prescription medication. she also didn't believe emily had ooe.

in any other state. thats what a new study from purdue university says. in the summer of 20-13... a man was rescued after being trapped in a grain bin near iowa falls. a firefighter won an award for that rescue says using "grain bin rescue tubes" made that rescue possible. that was the only way that we could get to him the fastest. the grain bin to drain the corn, but using these tubes was initially how we got to him. the study shows iowa led the nation with seven emergencies a year ago, the true number could be are not reported. the presidenttal hopefuls have eir sights set on on super tuesday. 12 states decide. the republicans hope their peformance at last night's debate will have an impact down the stretch.

he sayall levels of law enforcement are working together to "prevent attacks" on u-s soil. a tornado that carved a path through virginia had wids that topped 160 miles an hour. three people from one family were killed by a twister in waverly, virginia on wednesday. a two-year-old boy, along with his dad and grandpa -- all died. the tornado was on the ground for 13 miles -- damaging more than 100 homes. eight years after a devastating flood, the city of cedar rapids wonders if federal money has dried up. we're talking about 80 million dollars in federal money to support flood protection. the 2008 flood caused about 6 billion dollars in damage. the federal government supported paying for the majority of flood protection on the east ide of

the city and state would take care of the west. it would cost between 70 and 85 million dollars, and the plan was approved by congress. still, here we are in 2016 and the mayor says the city is waiting to find out if the federal money will ever be sent. "it's certainly frusterating because the damage from the just don't want to have to go through an experience and nor do our citizens or buisness to go through another flood ike that and be defensless." he says it's critical the flood protection plan is included in the next budget the president puts together. a bill making`its way throgh the legislature could help iowa schools combaabullying... the legislation would allow students -- who are victims -- to enroll in another school and immediately be eligible to play in varsity sports. right now, the law calls for students who transfer to wait 90 days before they're eligible. the bill was approved by the

we won't know whdown for a month. the retailer has 12-hundred stores across the country -- so closing 18 might not seem like a big deal... until you consider this. the c-e-o says it's likely the first time in the company's history it wilil close more than one the same time. kohl's has stores in 17 cities across iowa. we don't know if any iowa locations will be affected. the list will come out at the end of march.

celebrate this. a watchdog group says it found traces of a pesticide in german beers. it checked the 14 most popular beers in germany and found smalal traces of a pesticide used to kill weeds. some studies suggest this pesticide could cause cancer, but the government says the small amount found in the beer is not a threat. it's a scene right out of a child's imagination: a uicorn running free. this is juliette. she's a 20-year-old pony who spends her days making people's dreams come true by posing as a unicorn for pictures. this week, she got loose -- still wearing the unicorn horn. people tried to catch her -- as she ran close to traffic. finally -- someone was able to bring her back home. she ws not hurt, police say they received several calls from people ccvinced they hh seen the magical creature.

kwwl's hillary maglin tells us the university of iowa plans to burn the grass to provide renewable energy across campus. giant miscanthus. it's a type of grass used "it gives a nice, clean product for us to burn in our boilers." school is hahaesting their fields to burn compliance specialist ingrid anderson says it'll provide power... heating... and cooling across campus. "we get a renewable source of energy for the campus that reduces greenhouse gas emissions." anderson says burning the grass with coal can provide up to ten percent of the university's energy - without costing the school more money. "this will be cost-comparable to coal."

"this is fuel that we purchase from right here in johnson county or neighboring counties." she says the best thing about cultivating giant miscanthus - is how beneficial it can be for eastern iowa.
