hope you have a great monday.now on today in iowa: two iowa cities in the spotlight as we dig deeper into national crime statistics. but the news isn't necessarily bad. plus, we're just a day away. super tuesday could be make or break for a number of candidates. and trouble for taxpayers. what uncle sam is now saying about identity theft and our tax returns. i'm jerry gallagher. let's check on your weather now with storm track 7 meteorologist eileen loan. good morning. while above normal this morning, we are below freezing. we should gain some ground today with southwest winds this morning at 5 to 15 mph, but they will turn back to the north and pick up speed again, which will drop those temps again this afternoon. mostly clear now, but clouds will track in with a cold front

police say he has autism -- and they're worried about him. call police if you can help track him down. right now, a man is in the hospital after a fire. area yesterday. firefighters say a man was working on his truck in his driveway -- when it suddenly caught fire. the fire spread to the man's overalls. firefighters say the man was severely burned -- and was airlifted to iowa city. cedar rapids police investigate a report of shots being fired. derek bailey was arrested. police say he fired the gun in the air behind hazzard county american saloon on second avenue "it's unfortunate this isolated incident happens, hopefully that's not the trend going forward." that's the president of rock bar which is down the street from hazzards. he says he believes downtown has become safer over the years -- and says he appreciates the heavy police presence they see. the man accused of killing his wife and a rookie police officer

pentagon. that's the latest twist in this tragic story out of virginia. hundreds of people came together guindon. she was sworn in on friday. a day later, she was shot and killed -- after being called to "she was exceedingly bright, obviously driven in what she was doing, and skilled in so many ways." two other officers were injured. the suspect could face the death penalty if he's convicted. family and friends remembere victim. a memorial service was held over the weekend for a 60-year-old woman. she was one of six people killed last weekend after a man went on a deadly shooting rampage in kalamazoo. the woman was a retired teacher. former students shared memories of her commitment to teaching in and out the classroom. now to another memorial -- this time for a shooting spree in kansas.

others injured by a gunman inside a business last week. several people spoke at the service talking about how the community can heal and move forward. new statistics from the f-b-i might surprise you. those numbers show violent crime is down across the country and two cities in iowa stand out. dubuque and ames rank as the top two cities in the u-s where crime has dropped the most. f-b-i numbers were analyzed from 2010 to 2014 -- in dubuque -- the five-year drop in violent crime is 58 percent. it's a 56-percent drop in ames. we've been pretty fortunate over the years to have a very low violent crime rate. and so, work on a lot of quality of life issues." - commander jason tuttle - ames police department violent crime includes murder, rape, robbery and aggravated assault. again, the numbers don't include 2015.

right now, authorities are trying to find two inmates who escaped from a correctional center in iowa. it happened at the newton correctional release center in a routine count on saturday night. here are pictures of both. one man is serving 10 years on other -- charges. this is not what you want to hear during tax season. the i-r-s says the number of identity theft victims is much higher than it thought. last may, the i-r-s said crooks used a popular tool on their website to steal 104-thousand tax forms. in august, the agency said the number was even greater --330- thousand. now, it's even worse. the i-r-s says it's closer to 720- thousand. the agency plans to do more to warn taxpayers about it. it also took down the online tool thieves were using to steal personal information. the kitchen is closed for good a dubuque restaurant -- and

crust italian kitchen and bar announced earlier in the week it was closing saturday. but after running out of food friday night -- it shut down a unhappy -- esepcially those who could not redeem their unused gift cards. the owner tells kwwl -- things like this happen all the time in the restaurant business. third time was not the charm for the private space company space-x. it called off the launch of its falcon-nine rocket -- after two other cancellations in recent days. space-x says on its website the rocket is fine. but it's not saying why the launch was scrubbed again. the rocket carries a satellite that would bring internet and phone access to millions of people in asia. a family in need of a lift is getting one thanks to the love and support of firefighters. the family in oklahoma already lost their six- year-old son. now, his two- year-old brother is fighting the same form of cancer. kristin shanahan shows us how firefighters stepped in. since he was just 16 months, jase bollenbach has been

"look. see the big fire truck? woah!" ...a little hesitant at first... "can you climb up there? climb up there. let me help you. okay?" jase got in -- buckled up and ready to go. "he was talking the whole time, asking questions. how you work everything. what everything did." "did you get to ride in the fire truck? was it fun? the biggest award of the night went to spotlight. the movie about the boston globe's investigation into the catholic priest scandal won best picture. many thought the revenant would win best picture. however, the star of that movie -- leonardo dicaprio -- did win best actor. it's his first academy award

"for our children's children, and for those people out there who's amazing award tonight. let us not take this planet for granted. i do not take tonight for granted. thank you so very much." brie larson won the best actress oscar for her performance in "room". another upset -- was in the supporting actor category. mark rylance won for "bridge of spies" -- over nostalgic favorite sylvester stallone. this has not been an award-winning few weeks for the iowa basketball team. the 8th ranked hawkeyes had lost three of four coming into yesterday's game at ohio state. they were down five at the half, but played better to start the second. jared uthoff with the three. he had 16 in the game later -- mike gesell finds dom uhl for three -- iowa up 6 -- 6 minutes to go. but the buckeyes would rally -- down the stretch. iowa has struggled to win

that trend continued on sunday. iowa falls again. 68 - 64. we'll have to see how far they fall in the rankings when the new ap top 25 poll is released later today. now to a team on a winning streak. the uni women going for six wins in a row. the panthers hosting loyola on senior day. another great performance by uni. they take down loyola 63-52 and remain in first place in the missouri valley conference with two games left. you have to give this basketball fan credit for being persistent. a teenager showed up at the knicks game with a poster asking one of their players to prom. he replies -- saying he couldn't because of scheduling issues. but she didn't back down. she showed up to another game with a new sign -- hoping he would it's coming up, too many cooks in the kitchen can be counterproductive. so how about cooking oil? there are so many choices... is it too confusing? we sort it out next.

cooking oils at mosttoday can be overwhelming. haley hernandez spoke with a dietitian about the healthiest choices. olive! sunflower! even avocado oil! so many choices! and safe for searing.... first up-- flaxseed oil! actually want to keep it refrigerated to prevent it from being oxidized" she says oxidized oils can cause stroke and high disease and increased risk for cancer as well." medium heat may take longer... but you have plenty of options for oils that can cook at stovetop temperatures between 300-500 degrees... "if you're doing more of a stir fry or baking or cooking, then the grapeseed or the evoo, peanut oil or canola oil would be good options." for high temps, like searing or browning meat... our the sunflower oil. it's got a very got a high flash point so i know im safe if im cooking with sunflower oil." another thing to consider is whether your oil has the unsaturated fats like you want: that's sunflower, canola, olive and grapeseed oils... the most saturated fats are in, what she calls "tropical oils."
