department- but also businesses. national cigar has been a staple in downtown waterloo for 105 years. i've been here for 50 years..bought my father out in 1966.. like other business owners, john eveland is used to way. we have caught criminals..people shoplifting, stealing and i just think it's a tool that waterloo police department needs.. but if this new ordiance is approved..there will be changes. it will require some other businesses who dont have them..to get cameras.. and if the business inspections are mandatory. and if police want to see your video- they can. eveland though..is not worried..in fact he encourages the new ordinance. i think it's a good idea...anythin to help law enforcement catch criminals. lauren moss- but not everyone's excited i spoke to several businesses off camera who say they are concerned about the price. police estimate the dollars. chief trelka understands but argues it's

waterloo. we've had several shootings, a homicide..more than one where video surveillance from businesses have been incredbly useful to us. saying these cameras will make the community safer. i consider it to be a community policing iniitiative..how can we work with the community, communicate with the community, and make the community better. busiinesses were broken into this weekend..chief trelka says now is the time for businesses to get cameras. nothing is set in stone yet though- again council still needs to vote. we've got you covered, lauren moss kwwl news. it's important to know, if this passes, not every single business is required to get a camera- just certain places that have a risk of increased criminal activity.

this comes after downtown was closed off to traffic-- because of flooding-- forcing buisnesses and companies to close their doors for a week. thankfully--the water--not impacting much of that downtown core. kwwl's kristin rogers joins us live from downtown cedar rapids--kristin? this is actually our first day back into our cedar rapids bureau office--in a week--for this vvery reason-- we spent the week working from our newscar--or our homes--providing some of that flood coverage-- it's great to be back in our office-- many people-- getting that same opportunity on this monday-- as downtown appeared to be back in action-- streets are open--and people were out and about during the lunch hour-- but it was not the normal

amanda-this new center offering these veterans more than just a place to go. the comradery now extending beyond just the unform they wore. after the floods of 2008 ripped through-town-many veterans were left with no place to turn. this was the spark for the waverly area veterans post-a place to unite all veterans in the area. ready to serve each and every veteran under one roof. a young and old- active and returning vets to come together. support each other. and most importantly a place to honor them. take a look inside the elevator-a mural with all five branches of the armed forces. as you ride the elevator-the moving mural lighting up a tribute to these brave men- everytime they step inside.
