now on today in iowa: the mess left behind. the state is painting a clear picture of how much flood damage we've seen in eastern iowa. head to head. the vice presidential debate is tonight. and what's with the water? one creek has people lining up to take pictures -- because they've never seen anything like it. i'm jerry gallagher. let's check on your weather now with storm track 7 meteorologist eileen loan. good morning. we are starting off pretty mild this morning... temps are in the mid to upper 50s with southeast winds at 5 to 15 mph keeping

their first and only debate. republican vice presidential nominee mike pence will go toe to toe with democratic nominee tim kaine. they'll talk about the usual things -- what you would expect. but expect them to spend a lot of time defending their running mates. pence told supporters he hopes they get to talk about their own records. he's the governor of indiana and served in congress for a decade. kaine is a u-s senator and former governor of virginia. you can watch the debate tonight at eight right here on kwwl. questions about donald trump -- and trump's use of tax laws. over the weekend -- a new report suggested trump might have avoided paying income taxes for years after posting losses of about one-billion dollars in 1995. trump hasn't released his tax returns -- but did say this: "i have often said on the campaign trail, that i have a required like anybody else, or, put another way, to pay as little

loss could've been the result of deep troubles in a number of trump's businesses in the late eighties and early nineties. donald trump campaigns in arizona today. governor branstad says there's no evidence trump did anything illegal and says the "donald trump has been so audacious to admit that. yes, he's gotten rich off of the changed." he says that trump is the only candidate saying it needs to be changed. trump's opponent spent the day campaigning in ohio. this is what hillary clinton is saying about the trump tax about how he can't release his taxes because he's under audit, but he admitted every year before 2009 is not under audit. so donald, release everything up until 2009. show the

pennsylvania today. today -- first lady michelle obama will hit the campaign trail for clinton. the first lady will hold a rally in charlotte. you expect opponents to disagree on the issues, but the disagreements run deeper in the u-s senate race in iowa. they cannot even agree on where and when to debate. iowa public television cancelled grassley didn't accept their invitation. a grassley spokesperson says they couldn't agree on a format. i don't know why he would do this, i feel this is a slap in the face to iowa voters. this is a candidate more interested in having a debate about the debate instead of the issues." there is a debate between grassley and judge set for october 19th

you can watch that debate right here on kwwl. flood 2016 coverage now: at least a dozen properties in benton county have major damage. the red cross continues to help flood victims there. they were in vinton yesterday "we expect a flood every once in a while but like after 2008 prepared than last time but it did get our whole downstairs and everything." the red cross is giving her pay for a new water pump -- new walls and floors. three and a half million dollars. that's how much damage the flooding caused in butler county. that's the estimate from the state right now. in greene -- the cleanup continues. they had a lot of water to deal with. main street is now getting back to normal. "i think everybody got back into going again. we learned a lot

along main street -- but as you heard -- they are bouncing back. the time now is investigators keep digging through what's left -- after a train crashed in new jersey. they're looking for the second data recorder. they found another recorder that was supposed to track the speed of the train -- but it was broken -- and did not have anything on it. the engineer doesn't remember what happened. 100 were hurt. many people are being forced out of their homes this morning in colorado. a large grass fire continues to burn. at least seven buildings have been destroyed. so far -- no injuries though. high winds continue to fuel the fire. here's a big problem -- firefighters say the fire is moving in two directions. several roads have been closed. investigators don't know how the

morning: a police officer's daughter has died -- after being left in a patrol car. the three-year- old girl was left there for four hours. two officers in mississippi are now on leave because of it. they were both off duty when it happened. investigators say one officer was visiting with the other one -- but again -- the girl was apparently left alone for four hours. they also say the car was running and the air conditioning was on he who later died at a hospital. so we don't know what happened -- but expect to hear more about this as the week moves along. today, thousands of people are expected at a memorial service for legendary golfer arnold palmer. vince gill is expected to sing and jack nicklaus is expected to speak. palmer died last month. he was 86. cameras are a key to catching crooks. that's something the waterloo city council is taking a hard look at -- requiriing businesses

new-look ordinance last night. it's not a done deal. it will have to be voted on again. if it's approved -- some businesses like restaurants, banks and hotels would have to buy cameras. we have caught criminals..people shoplifting, stealing and i just think it's a tool that waterloo police department needs.. the current ordinance is from 19-93. police chief dan trelka says it's out-dated. people living in one ste to know why the water in their creek turned white. it looks like milk. the missouri d-n-r is now investigating. people are worried chemicals were illegally dumped into the water. "isn't there a public responsibility, if somebody did this or saw this, and they know how it happened, to let the public know what's going on?" the d-n-r is now collecting

another blow for wells fargo. the illinois state treasurer says they're suspending all business with the bank for one year. this comes after we all learned employees opened two million fake accounts without customers knowing it -- so they could meet their sales goals. u-s and california regulators have fined the bank 185- million dollars. "wells fargo is a big financial player in illinois, and i hope to send the message that their unscrupulous practices are not welcomed and will not be after a year -- he says the state will reevaluate what wells fargo has done -- and go from there. congress is still looking for answers. lawmakers want to know why the cost of epi-pens skyrocketed. in a letter to mylan's c-e-o, the house oversight committee called on her to hand over information on epi- pen's profit margins. the c-e-o testified before the

on a two-pack, which costs more than 600 dollars. but the washington post says the pre-tax epi-pen profit is more like 80 dollars per pen. a potentially big ruling handed down against the washington redskins name. the supreme court said it will not hear an appeal by the team to keep its federal trademark protections. some see the name as offensive to native americans. without a trademark registration, the teaw use the trademark nationwide. the nation's high court also turned down the obama administration's request to have a major immigration decision reconsidered. in june -- the court said it was evenly divided on the case. that means a lower court ruling that blocked the president's executive actions from going forward was upheld. many springsteen fans -- would probably do just about anything to
