devastating effects. meanwhile, residents have boarded up their home. others decided to huchger down and wait this storm t. airport is closed yesterday. anybody on this island, they are here for the duration of this storm, 1500 tourists were evacuated. about 3,000 are here waiting it out. one upstale hotel, they evacuated the residents out of their ballroom. homes are taking every precaution right now. i can tell you, we went out on the streets a short while ago. there is not a soul out there, just a few cop cars. >> thank you very much for that. now, we turn to meteorologist bill karins on where matthew is headed and, bill, we are talking about this historic damage when it comes to matthew, right in.

georgia and south carolina can be highly impacted. we are worried about a storm surge, we are expecting north of west palm beach and it could be higher inland, georgia and south carolina, along with a rainfall with a slow moving storm. so many problems will occur, such devastation is about to occur in less than 12 to 24 hours. >> everybody crossed that part of florida into carolina intensifies, it's still hammering the bahamas, up to 50 inches of rain could fall over the islands, producing life threatening storm surges as high as 15 feet. we want to turn to tammy who is in the bahamas with the latest. >> reporter: things have kicked up in the last hour. you mentioned storm surnls. that's the biggest concern out here. they can get up to 15 feet.

of these buildings. i want the give you a look at what we are seeing down here. you see the trees bending in the wind. residences have been boarded up. they have been doing that for the last few day, some residents have evacuated t. airports, they closed yesterday. so anybody still on the island is going to be stuck on the island. we are told in addition to the residents who are staying here, there are still about 3,000 visitors on this island. now chances. a lot of the people, they have been told to stay inside. there are signs up not to go outside. again, the storm surge is the biggest concern. this rain and this wind you are seeing. that will pass t. storm surge, that can get higher than some of these houses. >> they're relying on generator power as we are all bracing for hurricane matthew.
