mission in the face of disaster -- as they get ready to move to another area in need of help. good evening everyone, i'm amanda goodman. and i'm ron steele. thanks for joining us. tonight -- hurricane andrew is bearing down on the east coast -- where catastrophic damage is possible throughout the next two days. historic winds are expected along the coast -- with the storm already dealing a heavy blow to caribbean nations and killing at least 114 people there. this of course coming on the heels of our own severe weather event -- as many of eastern iowa's rivers flooded to near- historic levels over the past two weeks. communities along the cedar, shell rock and wapsipinicon rivers taking on flood water -- with many now trying to bounce back and clean up from the damage left in

amanieh is live in cedar falls tonight -- after meeting with volunteers trying to lend a hand in response to both disasters. ron -- as these emergency response teams head down to these hurricane threatened states. a lot of help is still needed right here in eastern iowa. i caught up with a group of amazing volunteers who are tackling this flooding before they head out to this group of men aren't from eastern iowa. "yeah, we just completed our operation, before that we had a major operation in west virginia helping with the flooding there." and now they're here in cedar falls-helping out this homeowner after the flooding left devastating damage. "gutting the house, taking out the drywall, the installation, damage, sub floors." and when you look

amount of people who have helped,and i feel like i'm always blessed when something neighbors, and friends, and people we don't even know out to help us." strangers-with a mission. but if you look closely they're wearing it proudly. decision 20-16 coverage now... here in iowa -- early voting and absentee balloting is underway but -- officials in several area counties in eastern iowa are saying there's one mistake many people are making. they say some people are not signing the back of the return envelope to their absentee ballots. yesterday alone -- black hawk county received 30 evelopes in the mail that weren't signed. in dubuque county -- around 10 percent of the have not been signed so far. here's a quick review of what to do -- ballot both sides and then put it in the secrecy sleeve, and then you put it all in the return envelope, and as it says on the

hawk county say they will contact the voters that did not properly sign their return envelope. until it's fixed -- these ballots cannot be counted. deaths on the road are up around the nation -- and the same is true in iowa. nationally -- there has been over a thousand more traffic deaths this year than over the same time in 20-15 -- according to a federal report. here in iowa -- 35 more people have died on the roadways compared to the average number on this day. black hawk county is approaching deaths from last year -- there's been eight in 20-16 compared to 10 throughout 20-15. dubuque -- meanwhile -- has equaled last year's deadly total of three. down south -- 20-15 totals have already been surpassed. there have been six deaths in linn county this year compared in five in all of 20-15. in johnson county -- 11 traffic deaths this year dwarfs last year's five people killed. kwwl's macleod hageman joins us live in the newsroom with more. mac? according to the iowa department
