and giving the opening prayer -- human rights director abraham funchess. tonight we're putting a face to the electoral college--the people actually responsible for casting those electoral votes after the popular vote is tallied. james whitmer, a man from waterloo, one of the six people chosen to cast an electoral vote for the republican party i kwwl's brad hanson live in the newsroom with more on this interesting process. the popular vote, come next month, won't technically decide the election--that falls to the electoral college. four times in history has a president won the election while losing the popular vote. tonight i talked to one man who is part of that electoral when november eighth rolls around, millions of americans will cast their ballots--most for this election's two major candidates. and while the popular

actually the electoral college that will decide who becomes the next president. each state gets a certain number of electoral votes, based on how many members of congress each state has. in iowa, that number is six. each candidate has six, and whoever wins the popular vote in iowa will see their electors cast their vote. (jim whitmer, republican elector) "after the election, on december 19th, the electors vote in des moines. if hillary iowa, than i and the other five electors will go to des moines and we will cast our electoral vote." whitmer is acting as an elector for the first time in his life, after was voted in by members of the republican central committee. while each elector is pledged to a certain candidate, they aren't required to vote for the candidate. whitmer tells me that despite trump's recent comments, he's sticking with him. sure to check out kwwl political analyst and uni associate professor, dr. chris larimer's blog. you can find a link to that on our website kwwl dot com. new at ten -- an iowa man accused of severely beating a woman, putting her in critical condition, is now facing charges. 39-year-old michael kelley, of west branch, charged with willful injury and domestic abuse. a 35-year-old woman was found in hisdr to the hospital for her injuries, where she remains tonight. kelley is being held in the cedar county jail. one person is killed, another injured, after a crash involving two cars. it happened on j- 40 near park road in van buren county. according to troopers, 60-year- old stephen baker, of galesburg, illinois, crossed the center line and collided with a car driven by 35-year- old jerid smith, of bloomfield. baker was killed in the crash, and

we now know the name of a driver who police say hit a young girl the eight-year- old was riding her bicycle on idaho street near highland elementary school in waterloo yesterday, when she was hit. the driver, 17- year-old taylor lawrence now cited for failure to yield to a pedestrian. the girl was taken to the hospital but is expected to be ok. a small area community may be next up for speed cameras on the elk run heights city council approving an ordinance that would allow for the cameras. but some in the city are not happy with it. there's a little bit more than a thousand people in the small town in black hawk county. the proposed speed cameras are for two areas-in town. one along lafayette road near city hall. and another on gilbertville road near the intersection of marie avenue.
