overnight. someone dies in a crash in a yard. a car went off the road along the 500 block of newell street in waterloo. it happened around midnight. the car hit a tree and then caught fire. the person who died -- was the only one in the car. their name has not been released. we'll keep following this story and bring you the latest on air and online as we learn more about it. after years of planning and a of work -- today -- a new interchange is set to open. the c-57 interchange over 218 will open this morning. we first started hearing about the need to make changes at cedar wapsi several years ago after many serious crashes. opening the overpass means three gravel roads -- including gresham road -- will be shut down. many people are very happy about the new interchange... but some are frustrated. roger's market has been on gresham road for more than 20 years. been coming for years because

different meetings and everything but we still don't want it to happen" the new stand is on waverly road and is now open and will remain open for three more weeks. the d-o-t says gresham road-- where the stand sits right now-- will be barricaded after they open the new overpass. making access from highway 218 impossible. a cedar rapids man is one of two crash. it happened yesterday afternoon in muscatine county. the state patrol says eric osborn did not yield and hit another car. a passenger in the other car -- from bettendorf -- was also hurt. parents want people to slow down near a waterloo school - after a student was hit by a car. an eight-year-old was riding her bike on idaho street near highland elementary this week, when she was hit. the driver was cited for not yielding. the girl was taken to the

"i'm scared for my kids everyday. you know, even them not walking by themselves. me walking with them. i'm not blaming parents, there's a lot of parents that their kids have to walk by themselves. i think we need precautions in our area saying slow down." she has about 40 signatures so far --and is working to get more before brin i police say someone was hit by a car yesterday on dubuque's west side. they tell our coverage partners at the dubuque telegraph herald that it happened at the intersection of pennsylvania avenue and radford road --around 5:30 last night. no other details have been released. this morning -- a woman is pretty lucky -- after her s-u-v was hit by a train. kim bradfield -- from janesville -- is expected to be ok. it could've been much worse. she was on 260th street in

today -- trump heads to north carolina. peace through strength. that's what many iowa veterans say trump will deliver if he's elected. more than 150 former officers and enlisted service members are coming together to stand behind trump. could be in hot water. a judge has found probable cause for a complaint of misconduct against new jersey governor chris christie. this is connected to the bridgegate scandal. witnesses have testified that christie knew about the lanes on a bridge being shut down a few years ago. it was allegedly ordered by christie staff members -- who wanted to get back at a mayor for not the case now goes to a prosecutor's office, which will decide whether to br possible indictment. in court today -- the former c-e-o accused of jacking up the price of drugs. martin shkreli was arrested last year on allegations of securities fraud. he's accused of looting a company of 11-million dollars to pay off investors he was suspected of defrauding in a hedge fund he ran. a baby has died after falling down an elevator shaft in new york. police say baby's mother was

she pushed the stroller inside... but the elevator wasn't there. they both fell. "i literally just like, left like 4 or 5 hours ago... and everything was fine... and just now... i'm still kind of in shock... i see the family all the time." police say the elevator was out of service. they aren't sure why the doors opened. records show 23 major elevator violations in this building in th students are in shock this morning -- trying to figure out why someone would kill the deer in their school's nature classroom. a family of deer was in a pen at "you said this appears to be a one of the more senseless acts that i've heard of." nature's classroom is a facility in a florida community where sixth graders enjoy the outdoors

more clouds will track in for the afternoon. it gets breezy, too, with winds up to 20 mph at times today and tomorrow. rain tracks in for the weekend, too. temperatures this morning are in the 30s and 40s with some upper 40s to the west.. all of us warmer than thursday's start. south winds are helping... they are mainly light now, but will today and really stay gusty through the night. a system to our south will throw some clouds our way today, but so will the larger system to the west. between the two, we could have drizzle tonight with showers and storms by saturday afternoon. but temperatures will warm

time for a lesson that could protect your entire family. this is the annual evansdale fire department open house. there's a lot going on -- including a chance to learn. an obstacle course teaches kids to stay low escaping a fire. in this trailer from the waterloo fire department, kids experience being in a house fire with none of the dangers as they climb through the window to safety. "you talk about what would you do if you were in your bedroom a volunteer to feel with like the back of their hand to see if the door's hot and if the door's hot then we have to go out another way." firefighters are urging families to talk about an escape plan this week -- and then practice it. everything's bigger in texas. even the alligators. a record-breaking 13 foot gator

it weighs more than 900 pounds. the national wildlife refuge says the gator has been a nuisance in the lake -- where it was caught. video from a different lake has everyone asking... what is that? it shows a hazy blur on lake superior. a photographer says he watched what looked like a massive ghost disappeared. "it looks like a ship. it looks say to all ofou yvir ewers, 'happy halloween.'" haunted ship sightings aren't unheard of there. there are more than six-thousand known shipwrecks in all of the great lakes. more than 200 in the stretch of lake superior -- not far from the time now is helping our cars think with us on the road. smart technology gives us more options behind the wheel. that story next.
