on a trail near redfield, just south and west of des moines when he walked up to a d-n-r officer in rural dallas county. it's a sad and shocking turn of events and kwwl's kristin rogers--joins us live from the des moines police department--kristin ? both the urnabdale and des moines communities are devestated-- at these senseless murders. the flag-h words can't begin to explain the outpour of support--take a look. flowers being dropped off by the dozens at the des moines police department-- and also in urbandale. officers are being hugged-- prayers are being prayed and many tears are being shed. it's hard for anyone to understand how this could have community-- whose job was to protect them. liz lee/ urbandale "saddened and shocked just hard to believe that urbandale iowa, that this happened, really

a memorial also went up at the scene where officer martin was killed in urbandale--- including a blue sign i spoke with some johnston high school students who were dropping off flowers at that scene in urbandale--they said its just in des moines, kristin rogers news 7--kwwl. greene is no stranger to police in the des moines area --being arrested multiple times on various charges. most recently, he was removed from a high school football game in urbandale after apparently showing a confederate flag during the national anthem. police say he waved the flag in front of other people who are minorities. sir, we're asking you to leave the property. what kind of distrubance have i caused? sir, sir, do not start."

--complaining to officers that his constitutional rights were violated. he also was charged with resisting arrest in 2014 after officers tried patting him down for a weapon. two days later he was accused of threatening to kill another man after a fight in a parking lot. officers tragically shot and killed this morning. kwwl's nikki newbrough live in the studio now police departments are at a loss for words at what happened last night. their collegues... two officers reporting for duty last night, now unexplainably dead. sergent tony beminio has been with the des moines police department for 11 years. he was 39 years old. people with the des moines police department say he was a good police officer and a family man. officer justin martin was only 24 years old.

by their departments and will be missed dearly. a lot of additional support coming in from departments all across the state --and even the country. these just some of the many tweets and facebook posts asking for prar two slain officers in this brutal ambush. truly a great sign of brotherhood and family shared by all law enforcement officers across the nation. many posting the des moines and urbandale police department logos - along with the hashtag "never forget" after this terrible tragedy. kwwl's elizabeth amanieh speaking with some of the local departments. she joins us live at the waterloo police department.

a somber day. and for officers here in iowa-losing two of their own hits too close to home. but they're standing together-staying strong in light of tragedy a quiet-somber day as officers remember and reflect. chief olson "you know, and it's that." and it's the reminders of support that keep them going. like this gesture- a box of cupcakes dropped off at the independence police department. with the words every officer needs most-we love you. staff right outside the black hawk county sheriffs office in memory of both sargeant anthony beminio and officer justin martin. chief trelka "i've hear people say, well officers, law enforcement officers in the country sign up to do this. yes, we do. our familys don't. and these incidents impact our family as well." but even when tragedy strikes their own- they're still
