his mother was in the process of moving from cedar rapids to chicago when it happened. she told police she had left her harris. he was already in jail -- being held other charges. back then, we said we would not give up until we brought his killer to justice. today, i'm proud to say that we have kept our promise. the man arrested is charged with first-degree murder. police are describing a crime scene -- as a murder trial continues. 27-year-old eddie hicks on trial -- accused of murdering his girlfriend. police say he stabbed her more than 100 times at her home in dubuque last year. according to our coverage partners at the dubuque telegraph herald -- an officer testified hicks told officers to kill him. the defense arguing he was confused and making odd statements. a simple cup of coffee is helping

that's happening after people saw this video of an officer being harrassed at a cedar rapids coffee shop. we got the popo wearing a black thing on her badge...she's upset cuz one of her cops got whacked in des moines the woman was kicked out for trespassing. ever since the video popped up -- people have been giving money at the coffee shop where it happened hoping officers can enjoy free coffee. brewhemia created a go-fund- me page called operation b dollars donated. "we ended up getting a few customers that dropped off money, some people mailed some money in and just simply said hey next time a police man or woman, sombody in uniform comes in, please buy them coffee on me." donations came from all over -- including from as far away as washington, dc.

more than 200 protests scheduled around the country yesterday -- around 70 people participating in dubuque. the pipeline would cross through several iowa counties... over in the dakotas, their land is being threatened, and their burial ground and their water resources are being threatened. we can't stay silent any longer." reid binion takes a look at some of the other protests around the country.

presidential candidate hillary clinton will make her first public appearance tonight since giving her consession speech last week. tonight, she'll be honored by the children's defense fund in d-c, where she once worked as a young staff attorney. speaker of the house paul ryan will remain in his leadership role for a second term. there will be a formal vote on the house floor in january -- to have more than enough votes on his side. representatives of the electoral college will cast their votes next month. but -- a waterloo man says his vote. james whitmer - one of iowa's six electors - says he's received calls and messages on his business's facebook page. whitmer does have the option to change his vote -- but he says - he'll still be voting for trump. trump was my last choice of perfectly legal, and that vote would register as an electoral vote. but i feeel that would be

throughout history- the faithless electors have never changed an election's results. people at an iowa assisting living home are given a month to find help elsewhere. 60 people living in des moines were told that assistance would no longer be there after next month. a letter says the agreement requires only 30 days notice when there is a change in language, services or fees. they can stay but will have to pay out of pocket for private assistance... "'we're senior citizens, we should be taken cae terrible very scary, very costly. i don't how one moves in a month." the company has yet to respond to a list of questions about their decision. an assistant principal is facing charges after she got sick eating a cookie laced with marijuana.

investigators say she got it from her daughter because she wanted to try it for her 50th birthday. both school leaders and students say they're shocked by her arrest. "it's out of character for this woman that everyone is shocked and of course it's disturbing. but given what we know at this time we have to take action." the woman has been put on paid leave. her daughter has been charged with possession of marijuana. a garage following a fire in dubuque. crews responding to the area of 22nd street and windsor avenue. what caused it. a couple is killed after their mobile home explodes and catches on fire. the victims' son says his mother was trapped inside --that's when his father went in to save her --but neither made it out alive. kitchen, momma and him with the oxygen tank. he tried to get her out, didn't make it."

tanks at the scene, which they believe contributed to the explosion. dozens of car windows smashed. some possibly shot at. saint louis police said there is evidence of widespread vandalism across several neighborhoods. police said there were as many as 60 cars vandalized. police are still looking for suspects. a family in pennsylvania is okay after a giant hole opened up next to their house. their backyard caved in when the passed the home collapsed. a loud cracking noise woke the sounded like it was going to collapse. the cracking was unbelievable. the whole back of the house. i ran up and got the kids. we went outside and these back lights were, so when you looked you saw the hole. and the hole just instantly opened up." the mine is about 2-hundred-feet deep and a tunnel runs below the

face the same problem. expanding services to help more people. a waterloo nonprofit is trying to get a grant so they can help more people get to where they need to go. kwwl's amanda gilbert joins us live in waterloo to tell us how the nonprofit is helping people stay eye of the needle wants to do more than just give people items they need. they recently applied for a grant from the waterloo community they try to help people out in all kinds of ways -- giving out supplies people need. as you can see from this video of one of their ungarage sales.. the organization has a lot of clothing and other items for people. but they're trying to "or if people need to go to the for people to do anything, and then if you don't have a car and then the taxis are kind of expensive, so we'll be able to

7 weather team. see the screen for your complete weather information. here is additional forecast information from the kwwl stormtrack 7 weather team: some areas of fog again this morning... although not as widespread, we can still catch it on some of our stormtrack7 live weather network cameras. we will end up mostly sunny again today and we stay mild today and tomorrow before things change on friday. we are starting the day warm.... in the mid 30s to low 40s over much of the viewing area. mainly the state, too, although there area few low 30s out there.... still above average. winds are light this morning but will become southeast and gusty by for the next day or so, but a pretty strong system will track in by tomorrow night bringing a lot of wind and maybe some rain to the area. we will 50s to 70s again, but much cooler air is tracking in behind the front... only the mid 30s in western dakotas tomorrow. we will stay mild today.. highs in the upper 50s to mid 60s with gusty southeast winds. winds will stay gusty tonight and lows will drop only in the mid 40s to around 50 (higher than our normal highs) and we stay warm for thursday with highs in the mid 50s to low 70s as the system tracks in.

ready to plan trips for next year, experts are predicting which cities will have the best deals. top six destinations are: washington, d-c... florida's gulf coast... new zealand... paris... peru... and the u-k. more hotel openings make d-c and florida a good bet -- and a strong dollar could make traveling abroad more affordable. jetblue is having a sale right now -- some one-way fares are listed as low as 34-dollars each way. the tickets are good for monday through thursday and saturday travel between december first and march ninth.

the parade. karen lee shows us some of the about the parade. from fantasy conception to tangible magic. new floats this year are the aloha spirit featuring a working waterfall, the girls scouts' building a better world, deck the halls and krazy glue's fun house. they're elaborate and no doubt expensive. "we always talk about the york and to the country and when you get a gift, you never ask the price." now that they've been created-- getting 26 floats into new york the day before the parade-- is no easy feat. "all of these 3-story, 24-foot wide, 30 to 40 feet long floats have to come apart and collapse and dismantled down to no more than 8 1/2 feet wide, no more than 12 1/2 feet tall

at his side." congressman mike rodgers is out, in what sources call a "stalin- esque purge" of people associated with former transition leader chris christie. son-in-law jared kushner wielding influence. the team's inquired about him getting security clearance. vice president-to-be mike pence is in charge, in washington today for lunch with vice president joe biden. "this leadership team is unified. our new president-elect." republicans in congress elect new leaders today. house democrats put their elections off. minority leader nancy pelosi's expected to face a challenge from ohio's tim ryan. "we got our butts kicked and we need to move forward." the country... still trying to move forward. and there's still pushback on steve bannon's appointment as chief strategist at the white house. democrats want him out.

minority leader nancy pelosi's and there's still the president- elect has some decisions about his businesses. the trump international hotel in washington had its grand opening in october. it could prove to be a conflict-of- interest for trump if he holds news conferences there -- of if any diplomats who visit the white house stay there. trump says he plans to transfer his business empire to his could still be a p-r headache for the administration... and the best solution might be to sell it. a north korean diplomat says his country doesn't care who is president -- but rather -- if the u-s will end its quote "hostile policies". the north korean foreign ministry director said that at the united nations .. after a u-n committee voted to condemn his country over human rights abuses. a tech company c-e-o is out after a social media post about donald trump. on election, matt harrigan --

california -- posted on social media that he planned to kill the president elect. when a friend warned him that he might get a visit from federal authorities -- he said -- bring it secret service. harrigan has apologized and deleted his facebook account. the company's board of directors said it doesn't condone comments like that and accepted his resignation. this morning, a mayor is no longer on the job after she seemed to endorse a racist comment about the first lady. this is what happened. after the election, a west virginia non-profit director posted to have a classy, dignified first lady in the white house. she said i'm tired of seeing an ape in heels. the mayor of clay, west virginia then responded -- saying -- you just made my day... "this is not the way i want my ape in heels, obviously is a racial slur." the woman who made the post is now on leave from her job at a

her comment wasn't meant to be racist. she says she was just happy to see a change in the white house. president obama is overseas right now -- where thousands of people marched through streets of greece to protest his visit. they held signs reading "unwanted!" "we welcome refugees, but not obama." in the group are refugees from afghanistan and syria who are blaming the u-s government for the wars in their home countries. soldiers find a large bomb-making factory in mosul. they found it as the iraqi army soldiers found homemade rockets and mortars. isis has been making bombs out of scrap metal. those who knew a 19-year-old girl have a simple message after she was shot to death. they want the people who know something to step out of the shadows. friends and family say talasa wright was a smart -- friendly young woman who loved her family deeply. she was shot to death in a car

"talasa was a beautiful person. she was going to school in the medical field and she had a lot of potiential ahead of her. to see that her life was cut so short, it really upsets you." her family tells kwwl she was a terrific student who graduated from watero case. people with questions about an officer-involved shooting take their protest right to the city council meeting. cedar rapids police say jerime mitchell got into a fight with officer lucas jones during a traffic stop a few weeks ago. that's when officer jones shot mitchell. some want the dash cam video released -- but the linn county attorney's office says -- releasing it too early could affect the investigation. the man convicted of shooting an iowa police officer will not have his case heard by the iowa supreme court.

convicted in the shooting of dubuque lieutenant scott baxter -- a shooting that happened several years ago. his attorney says the only reason chest accepted a plea deal is because two sentences from the case were supposed to be served at the same time. the prosecution argued they were meant to be served back-to-back. chest did win his first two appeals but not this most recent time, so two 25-year sentences -- to be served back to back -- will stand. the trial for a police officer accused of assault will now start in january. waterloo lieutenant corbin payne pleaded not guilty to a misdemeanor assault charge. police reports show payne accused a delivery driver of speeding and cutting him off. payne is then accused of following the victim into a shopping center, hitting the man's car, and then pulling the man out and allegedly choking him. payne was off- duty at the time. the black hawk county sheriff's department has handled the case. a nearly two- million dollar settlement for a police officer who accused the former chief of discrimination. the settlement for a west des

chief shaun ladue resigned. she's one of three woman who sued last year -- claiming they were unfairly passed over for department is working to move forward. 'in my 32 years, morale is kind work, feels like they are part of the team, and thats what were gonna do.' already settled their claims. this morning, five students are in the hospital after being attacked at school. they were stabbed at a high school in utah. a 16-year-old boy arrested after he apparently stabbed himself. he had been homeschooled -- "our thoughts and prayers go out to these students and their families as well as the mountain view high school community. a great community, but a very,

all five victims are expected to survive. no word yet on a motive. dry, warm weather helps fuel fires in a handful of states. crews are working hard -- fighting fires -- from tennessee to north carolina this morning. they have one fire contained in tennessee -- so people who were forced out of their home can go about a fire that could move closer to several towns tomorrow if the winds pick up. a truck known for making the pavement... overturns on the pavement -- creating a big problem. a cement truck crashed in phoenix. you'll see it happen in this video. the driver might have been in a intersection before the light changed. the good news -- no injuries -- after all that. a timeout from the army corps of engineers. it's delaying construction of

but the companies behind it -- are going to court to see if they can go around that order. the corps says there needs to be a bigger discussion with the standing rock tribe over the construction. the pipeline would run through four states, including iowa. the tribe says it has serious environmental concerns about the pipeline. we've seen protests all over the country. this one is from those who support the pipeline. they call it the safest and most efficient way to move oil, instead of using rail or trucks. they also say the pipeline could help the u-s becoe foreign oil. construction helps pave the way for a safer drive in eastern iowa. seventh street and highway-20 in dyersville -- is known to be deadly. it's now closed - replaced with a new interchange. instead of crossing high speed "the hope is that without those t-bones and head-on collisions, everyonewi ll bme erging at a ramp that it will lead to maybe, the worst case scenerio, side swipes and rear-ends and hopefully that stops all fatalities."

the finalists. beginning tuesday, november 29th -- a finalist will come to campus each day for four straight days. their names will be announced 24 hours ahead of time. after the campus visits, the board will meet the next week to the u-n-i women's basketball team hits the road for a big game in ames. panthers and cyclones in a good one. adrianna camber is wide open on the wing for three... cyclones by eight. iowa state would lead by four at the break. third quarter -- madison weekley for uni... slashing through the iowa state defense for 2 of her 15 points. u-n-i hanging in. but in the fourth quarter -- jadda buckley knocks down three of her game high 25 to put the cyclones up ten... iowa state moves to two and oh on the season -- winning 76-68. uni is now one and one. iowa's upset win over michigan set

case of lost and found. a number of hawkeye helmets went missing after the game. one of those belonged to quarterback c-j beathard -- who took his off during the celebration. apparently, that helmet went on a tour of iowa city -- before it greg, our equipment guy told me, i guess one of the cops walking down the street saw a kid wearing it downtown or something like that. that's what i heard. that disappeared -- are back. they'll be with the hawks as they head to illinois for an 11 a-m hard to believe because we're still seeing people in shorts... but the holiday season is just about here.
