widespread as yesterday morning. we still have mainly clear skies and temperatures are in the mid to upper 30s across most of the viewing area. winds are light to 10 mph from a northerly direction but will turn to the southeast and become gusty this afternoon. we should warm into the upper 50s to mid 60s this afternoon as well.... one more really nice day after this before things change. i'll have the details in a few minutes. northerly direction but will turn to the southeast and become well.... one more really nice our top story this morning -- protests around the country, including here in iowa, over the dakota access oil pipeline. the pipeline would cross through much of iowa -- though much of the debate -- has been focused on a section of land in north dakota.

around the country yesterday -- around 70 people at this one in dubuque. they stood in front of a u-s bank. an organization called food and water watch named u-s bank one of 38 banks helping contribute money to the pipeline project. u-s bank did not comment. (adria hogan, dubuque) "i'm out here today because we can't stay silent when so many of our brothers and sisters over in the dakotas, their land is being threatened, and their burial ground and their water resources are being threatened. reid binion takes a look at some of the other protests around the country. "water is sacred! "water is life!" the heartland tuesday... ...protesting in support of the standing rock sioux tribe... ...and against the construction of the controversial dakota access pipeline. "i do this because i want clean drinking water for my future generations..." plans for finishing the pipeline include tunneling under a lake and river that the standing rock tribe relies on for drinking water. the concern is that digging under those water sources will create a risk of

presidential candidate bernie thousands across the country opposing the project. "we are not going to allow a pipeline to endanger the clean water that millions of people depend upon." the companies behind the dakota access pipeline insist that the risks are low. "pipelines do leak. it's rare. i think the chances of this pipeline leaking is extremely remote..." those same companies -- slamming the army corps of engineers' monday decision to halt further construction on and around the lake... and taking their case to court. e needs to discuss the issue further with the standing rock tribe... ...and that it hasn't decided yet whether to grant an easement for continued construction. i'm reid binion. the company building the pipline is asking a federal judge for permission to go around the government and keep construction a kwwl follow-up. blood everywhere. that's how

continues. 27-year-old eddie hicks on trial accused of murdering his girlfriend. police say he stabbed her more than 100 times at her home in dubuque last year. according to our coverage partners at the dubuque telegraph herald -- an officer testified hicks told officers to kill him. the defense arguing he was confused and making odd statements. 15-thousand dollars in damage to a garage following a fire in dubuque. crews responding to the area of 22nd street and windsor ave. yesterday's fire -- no word on what caused it. passed over for a promotion - the claim worth nearly two-million dollars. the city of west des moines agreeing to a settlement with a sergeant -- two days after chief shaun ladue resigned. she was one of three woman who sued last year --claiming they were unfairly passed over for promotions. the two other officers already 'in my 32 years, morale is kind of, its hard to explain, and i think you make your own morale.

of the team, and thats what were gonna do.' the sergeant has been with the department for 17 years. a horrific story. a 14-year-old is fighting for his life after being locked inside of a basement for two years. he was found inside an alabama home sunday with little food or water. he's now in critical condition in the hospital. authorities say when he was brought in, he only weighed 55-pounds. representatives with the alabama department of human resources say they never received any reports about the child. police arrested his adopted parents. families of those killed in the shootings at sandy hook are appealing a judge's ruling. the families want to hold remington responsible in a wrongful death

dead.. a judge dismissed their case -- but "i'm bringing this appeal to help avoid the next mass shooting. using these weapons and to help prevent more families from the horrors that we have experienced." lawyers filed papers asking the supreme court to hear their appeal. water still unsafe -- the state of emergency continues. a year ago -- the mayor of flint, michigan declared a state of emergency. that was set to expirei we still cannot drink oura wter without a filter, and that's a huge issue federal and state governments have vowed to restore the drinking water system and continue helping the peopel of flint. a cement truck trying to get through an intersection before the light changed -- and turns too fast for its load.

thankfully, no one got hurt. dry, warm weather continues to fuel wildfires in the southeast. fires burning in tennessee, the carolinas. strong winds expected tomorrow -- which could push the fires near communities. humidity also expected to drop -- making fighting the fires more difficult. decades after he died defending our country -- an iowa hero's remains are identified. marine corps private first class wilbur mattern, of oelwein battle in 1943 --but his remains were not recovered until just recently. he will be buried with full military honors monday at arlington national cemetary. continuing coverage -- as the white house transitions to new leadership -- today -- the outgoing and incoming vice presidents meet for lunch. joe biden will welcome mike pence today at the vice president's official residence at the naval observatory. pence spent tuesday in transition meetings at trump tower. his wife karen is expected to attend the lunch as well.

biden will be there. former democratic presidential candidate hillary clinton will make her first public appearance tonight since giving her consession speech last week. tonight, she'll be honored by the children's defense fund in washington, d-c, where she once worked as a young staff attorney. president-elect donald trump is going to have to make some tough decisions about his businesses the trump international hotel in washington just opened. but the historic post office turned five-star property may prove to be a conflict-of- interest for trump. fo e questions if trump holds press conferences on the property... or if visiting diplomats decide to stay at the hotel. trump said he plans to transfer his business empire to his children during his presidency. speaker of the house paul ryan will remain in his leadership role for a second term. house republicans unanimously nominated ryan. in january, ryan will be subjected to a formal vote on the house floor to officially retain his gavel for the new congress. with a republican majority in the house, ryan is expected to

after a social media post about donald trump. on election, matt harrigan -- who ran a cybersecurity company in california -- posted on social media that he planned to kill the president elect. when a friend warned him that he might get a visit from federal authorities -- he said -- bring it secret service. harrigan has apologized and deleted his facebook account. the company's board of directors said it doesn't condone comments like th this morning, a mayor is no longer on the job after she seemed to endorse a racist comment about the first lady. this is what happened. after the election, a west virginia non-profit director posted this on facebook. she said it will be refreshing to have a classy, dignified first lady in the white house. she said i'm tired of seeing an ape in heels. the mayor of clay, west virginia then responded -- saying -- you just made my day.

now on leave from her job at a non- profit. the mayor apologized -- saying her comment wasn't meant to be white house. new this morning -- expanding services to help more people. a waterloo nonprofit is trying to get a grant so they can help kwwl's amanda gilbert joins us live in waterloo to tell us how the nonprofit is helping people stay warm more than just give people items they need. they recently applied for a grant from the waterloo community foundation of northeast iowa... they try to help people out in all kinds of ways -- giving out supplies people need. as you can see from this video of one of their ungarage sales.. the organization has a lot of clothing and other items for people. but they're trying to get grant

"throughout every police officer's career, we're all witness to things that most people shouldn't see once in a lifetime, let alone on a regular memory, and last year on labor day weekend, two-year-old kyrian knox became one of those memories harris is charged with first-degree murder. those who knew a 19-year-old girl have a simple message after she was shot to death. they want the people who know something to step out of the shadow friends and family say talasa wright was a smart -- friendly young woman who loved her family deeply. she was shot to death in a car friday night in waterloo. her loved ones came together where it happened -- at the "come out cowards. you need to come out and turn yourself beautiful person. she was going to school

she had a lot of potiential ahead of her. to see that her life was cut so short, it really upsets you." her family tells kwwl she was a terrific student who graduated from waterloo east. no arrests have been made in the case. people with questions about an officer-involved shooting tak council meeting. cedar rapids police say jerime mitchell got into a fight with officer lucas jones during a traffic stop a few weeks ago. that's when officer jones shot mitchell. some want the dash cam video released -- but the linn county attorney's office says releasing it too early could affect the investigation. dozens come together to remember a man kileld by police. the minneapolis officers involved in the shooting of jamar clark were cleared of any wrongdoing. but

to remember him -- marching near the police department -- and releasing balloons into the sky. authorities say a california deputy shot and killed a suspect. witnesses say shots were fired after the suspect argued with a woman in a parking lot. when deputies responded "we just saw one of the police officers was hurt bleeding from his head. i think he might have fell back or there was a scuffle or something so." the sheriff's office says no officers were shot in the incident. flights will take off again this morning at an airport -- after a a southwest airlines employee was ambushed at the will rogers airport in oklahoma city. the shooter was later found dead. police believe the attack was planned. they say the shooter apparently knew the victim's routine. "i wanted to extend our sympathies to the southwest employee that lost his life and to the southwest family and to the airport community. it was a big loss for us." this morning, police are looking into a motive. yesterday, many flights were

five students are stabbed at a high school. it happened in utah. according to authorities, all five victims were male. conditions range from fair to critical, however the city says all five are expected to survive. police took a 16- year-old into custody but have not released a motive. an assistant principal is facing charges after she got sick eating a cookie laced with marijuana. florida investigators say she got the cookie from her daughter because she wanted to both she and the daughter "it's out of character for this woman that everyone is shocked and of course it's disturbing. but given what we know at this time we have to take action." she's currently on paid leave at the school. a kwwl follow-up. pulling together to support officers -- following a viral video of a woman harasing a cedar rapids officer. we got the popo wearing a

whacked in des moines eventually -- the woman was kicked out of the coffee shop for trespassing. since the incident last week -- people have been giving money to the coffee shop, so officers can enjoy free coffee. customers that dropped off money, some people mailed some money in and just simply said hey next time a police man or woman, sombody in uniform comes in, please buy them coffee on me." thosuand dollars -- and at two dollars a cup -- that's about 5-hundred cups of coffee. the man convicted of shooting an iowa police officer will not have his case heard by the iowa supreme court. eddie chest - and his son were convicted in the shooting of dubuque lieutenant scott baxter -- a shooting that happened several years ago. his attorney says the only reason chest accepted a plea deal is because

same time. the prosecution argued they were meant to be served back-to-back. chest did win his first two appeals but not this most recent time, so two 25-year sentences -- to be served back to back -- will stand. the trial for a police officer accused of assault will now start in january. waterloo lieutenant corbin payne pleaded not guilty to a misdemeanor assault charge. police reports show payne accused a delivery driver of speeding and cutting him off. payne is then accused of fol man's car, and then pulling the man out and allegedly choking him. payne was off- duty at the time. the black hawk county sheriff's department has handled the case. right now -- where thousands of people marched through streets of greece to protest his visit. they held signs reading "unwanted!" "we welcome refugees, but not obama." in the group are refugees from afghanistan and syria who are blaming the u-s government for the wars in their home countries. soldiers find a large

"that's like saying if somebody and they've already gotten everybody tied up, we ought to let them just keep the money. they're violating the law. they shouldn't be allowed to get away with that." kennedy wants pipeline construction to stop until a full environmental impact statement is completed. wh protests against the pipeline -- this group -- backs the pipeline. they say they're side -- while often silent -- is the majority. the corps says there needs to be a bigger discussion with the standing rock tribe over the construction. . new this morning -- people at an iowa assisting living home are given a month to find help elsewhere. 60 people living in des moines were told that assistance would no longer be there after next
