homeless people in the area are migrating into a large number of abandoned buildings for temporary cover. but -- those buildings can pose serious safety hazards. homeless people in waterloo say they're turning to empty buildings for shelter -- but danger has followed recently. on friday -- fire crews put out a fire within a former apartment complex in the 900 block of commercial street. supposed to be abandoned -- but crews rescued a man from a second story window. he was arrested after being pulled from the burning building. another fire happening in waterloo on monday -- this one at the corner of elm and mulberry. police say no one lives in the homeless might have been in the home. no one was hurt in the fire. kwwl's elizabeth amanieh is live in waterloo.

speeding car that caused the deadly crash. 38-year-old cynthia brooks died in the crash. she was the cousin of the driver taken into custody. charles' wife and seven year old daughter were also in the car at the time of the crash- they were both injured and later released from the hospital. cynthia was the only one who died in that crash- her funeral -- happening today in waterloo. kwwl's lauren moss speaking with the brooks family today- before the funeral services.. cynthia's younger sister stephanie was kind enough to invite me inside her home as family members shared memories of the 38 year old mother of two. there are still many questions in this case- but stephanie tells me..as hard as it is, she forgives her cousin. the skid marks left behind dont even begin to tell the tragic story behind a deadly crash earlier this month. but the pain that multiple times a day..

shots fired incident. it happened this afternoon in an alley near west parker and columbia. there were no injuries, but one home was hit. a witness tells kwwl she heard three shots fired. this comes on the heels of friday's shooting which left one dead. in continuing coverage -- the search for the next president at u-n-i is nearing its end -- as four finalists for the job will visit their visits will happen on four consecutive days -- starting november 29th. each candidate's name will be announced 24 hours before their visit. public forums will be held each day from two-30 until three-45 in the afternon. following the visits -- the board of regents will meet december 5th and 6th to interview the candidates and select a new president. an eastern iowa coffee shop has almost doubled its goal -- as it raises money to support area

the northern iowa men's basketball takes a big step up in competition tomorrow.... the panthers are in orlando, florida to face the arizona state wildcats in the tire pros invitational. northern iowa opened the season on saturday with a 74-37 victory over coe college at the mcleod center. tomorrow the panthers will be challenged by an arizona state team that won its first two games averaging 92 points a game. uni head coach ben jacobson says the panthers scrimmaged 9th ranked wisconsin to prepare them for the tough n we found out some in the scrimmage against wisconsin and those results and what with everybody..you have seen us play against bemidji and you have seen us play against coe. in between that we got a chance to see a team like the three teams we will play this week and i think in the scrimmage against wisconsin
