homeless people in the area are migrating into a large number of abandoned buildings for temporary cover. but -- those buildings can pose serious safety hazards. homeless people in waterloo say they're turning to empty buildings for shelter -- but danger has followed recently. on friday -- fire crews put out a fire within a former apartment complex in the 900 block of commercial street. supposed to be abandoned -- but crews rescued a man from a second story window. he was arrested after being pulled from the burning building. another fire happening in waterloo on monday -- this one at the corner of elm and mulberry. police say no one lives in the homeless might have been in the home. no one was hurt in the fire. kwwl's elizabeth amanieh is live in waterloo.

amanda/ron- thankfully in both these fires no one was hurt. but i wanted to understand why some-who are homeless are seeking out abandoned buildings instead of homeless shelters in the community. for chad bruce-this but after he was rescued from a fire here-he was arrested and later charged with trespassing. now he's homeless again. there's also the catholic workers house. but they also only offer what they call emergency shelter for up to ten days. live in waterloo elizabeth amanieh news 7 kwwl the salvation army has started the salvation army has started their red kettle bell campaign- taking donations to help the homeless. for more information on how to donate-visit kwwl dot com. family says goodbye to a loved one today -- all while an invesitgation is revealing the story behind the crash that killed her. the accident happened on highway 57 near downtown cedar falls -- in the early morning hours of november 5th. police say a car going over 100 miles an hour slammed into another car as both were heading west. 42-year-old charles brooks was later taken into custody on a warrant for a felony of serious

speeding car that caused the deadly crash. 38-year-old cynthia brooks died in the crash. she was the cousin of the driver taken into custody. charles' wife and seven year old daughter were also in the car at the time of the crash- they were both injured and later released from the hospital. cynthia was the only one who died in that crash- her funeral -- happening today in waterloo. kwwl's lauren moss speaking with the brooks family today- before the funeral services.. cynthia's younger sister stephanie was kind enough to invite me inside her home as family members shared memories of the 38 year old mother of two. there are still many questions in this case- but stephanie tells me..as hard as it is, she forgives her cousin. the skid marks left behind dont even begin to tell the tragic story behind a deadly crash earlier this month. but the pain that multiple times a day..

on my shoulders. as she says goodbye to her older sister..for the last time. everyone else from the crash including two people from the only car are recovering. as for the investigation- police say it's fro in cedar falls, lauren moss news 7 kwwl. after the crash, cedar falls police say charles climbed a fence, attempting to jump in the river but police grabbed him. he's in the black hawk county jail on a 100 thousand dollar bond. one day after the crash -- the cars involved in the accident were destroyed when a building belonging to the cedar falls everything inside the building was

shots fired incident. it happened this afternoon in an alley near west parker and columbia. there were no injuries, but one home was hit. a witness tells kwwl she heard three shots fired. this comes on the heels of friday's shooting which left one dead. in continuing coverage -- the search for the next president at u-n-i is nearing its end -- as four finalists for the job will visit their visits will happen on four consecutive days -- starting november 29th. each candidate's name will be announced 24 hours before their visit. public forums will be held each day from two-30 until three-45 in the afternon. following the visits -- the board of regents will meet december 5th and 6th to interview the candidates and select a new president. an eastern iowa coffee shop has almost doubled its goal -- as it raises money to support area

officers. the benefit has come following the surfacing of this video -- where a woman verbally attacks a cedar rapids police officer while she live streamed the encounter on social media. th iecnident took place inside brewhemia in cedar rapids. brewhemia -- kicking off what they call 'operation blue- hemia' this week to support officers coming to the shop. the go-fund-me they started officers with free drinks and food at brewhemia. the stated goal of one-thousand dollars has already been exceeded -- with the page raising nearly 18-hundred dollars tonight. if you're interested -- you can find out how to donate by visiting kwwl dot com. controversy---after an iowa city resturaunt charges different cover fees based on which candidates customers voted for in the election-- it happened at stella in iowa city

buisness says it was just a game-- meant to be funny-- kwwl's kristin rogers joins us live from iowa city with the latest--kristin? i spoke with one of the partner's here-- he says this whole thing was meant to be funny-- but he believes it was blown out receiving death threats-- customers were charged five- dollars ithf ey voted for hillary clinton and ten- dollars if they said they voted for president-elect donald tru. michigan fans who said they supported trump-- were charged 20 dollars-- there were also categories for no vote and third party voters-- fun. "would i do it again? it's hard to say. it was funny, it was really truley funny and it was a lot of really great discussions about politics which i enjoy." he says it was also meant as a lesson on discrimination.

"i'm glad they're bringing him home. in a way, i kind of wish they were bringing him back to oelwein. we'd like to honor him commander blitsh wishes he could attend monday's burial service -- but says the news came at short notice. "it gives me a very sobering effect going to arlington cemetery. i've probably been there five or six times, and i'm amazed by the vastness of it. 's honor our war dead for sure." "more than 50 bricks are placed in the ground to commemorate oelwein veterans killed in action. i caught up with an oelwein mom who says her son was nearly the same age when he their loved ones buried at a site where they can go to mourn them, love them, and bring little things for them. i would almost think it would be like having a missing person to not have that

good evening, i'm rick coleman. the northern iowa panther football team closes out the regular season this weekend at home against tenth south dakota state. it is a game the panthers need to win to have a shot at the f-c-s playoffs. a victory would give the panthers sole possession of fourth place in the missouri valley... and a big part of uni's postseason resume is that the panthers have played the toughest schedule in f-c-s football--which features six nationally opponent and the big 12's iowt been by just one score--including three games in which the panthers were leading in the fourth quarter---but it doesn't mean anything--unless uni wins saturday. there's ways to justified stuff and there's not to you just have to flippin win and the play the game and play the play and take care of yopur business and let those people who make those choices make them. the panthers and the jack

the northern iowa men's basketball takes a big step up in competition tomorrow.... the panthers are in orlando, florida to face the arizona state wildcats in the tire pros invitational. northern iowa opened the season on saturday with a 74-37 victory over coe college at the mcleod center. tomorrow the panthers will be challenged by an arizona state team that won its first two games averaging 92 points a game. uni head coach ben jacobson says the panthers scrimmaged 9th ranked wisconsin to prepare them for the tough n we found out some in the scrimmage against wisconsin and those results and what with everybody..you have seen us play against bemidji and you have seen us play against coe. in between that we got a chance to see a team like the three teams we will play this week and i think in the scrimmage against wisconsin

tense couple of weeks around the weeks around the country -- after last week's election. they're called the "joy-ologist" club. the group of sixth grades in carlisle is trying to spread joy to their classmates -- and also come up with way to reach out to students who might feel uncomfortable. although they're motivated -- the group's young leader admits it can be a challenge: "we're trying to like get the drama to go away, but like, it's kind of hard to get everybody to stop." the group says they wish adults would quote "grow up" -- and also spread more joy. thank you for joining us for the k-w-w-l news at six. we'll see you back here at ten o'clock.
