(steve dudak, iowa state patrol) "don't veer for the deer, apply your breaks firmly, steer through the collision, and then safely get yourself off the highway, either driving onto the median, or clear to the side on the left." your natural instinct may be to swerve, but dudak says you should fight that urge. "anytime you veer from something like that, you lose the ability or the happenstance to actually lose control of your

this is the time of year when you're likely to see many more deer on the road. you might see more around dawn or dusk, as they might be out looking for food. there are also physical indicators that show where a deer sighting might be more likely. sex scandal with a student. former cedar rapids washington high teacher mary beth haglin facing federal and state charges of sexual exploitation. she pleaded not guilty to those charges. however, haglin admitted to having a relationship with a 17-year-old student while teaching at the school. her trial will now be in tama county and begins november 28th. on the sotry. the judge also ruling today that as a long-term substitute teacher for the school --- haglin is considered a school employee. haglin's first interview with kwwl --- the former teacher hasn't shyed away from the spotlight. even allowing inside edition, crime watch daily, and dr. phil to tell her story. the media attention -- playing a factor in her request to change counties for her trial.

--- haglin has maintained --- it was the student who seduced her -- continuing to claim her innocence. again --- haglin's trial is set to start at the end of the month in tama county. a former city council member is sentenced to up to 20 years in prison in connection to sexual abuse charges involving teenage girls. 42-year-old chris king, a former burlington city council member, entering an alford plea which means he maintains innocence but acknowledges there's enough evidence to convict him. this comes afte august after being found guilty of sex abuse and assault involving other teen girls he met through his photo studio. continuing coverage -- testimony today from family members of the man accused of murdering his girlfriend. 27-year-old eddie hicks facing charges of first degree murder. police say he stabbed 21-year-old kahdyesha lemon more than 100 times at her dubuque home in june of 2015. hicks sister and father both

hicks was taking drugs --and seemed very erratic and paranoid days before the murder. this all according to our coverage partners at the telgraph herald. the trial is expected to area woman killed in a car crash. it happened earlier this month on highway 57 near downtown cedar falls. 38-year-old cynthia brooks was killed in the crash. her cousin, charles brooks was serious injury by vehicle after police say he was going more than 100 miles per hour leading up to the crash. but cynthia's sister says she forgives him. "i can't have any hate in my heart because i just knew how he felt ..i don't know what was happening but i can't carry that on my shoulders because i have to be strong."

into the river but police were able to grab him. police are still investigating the crash. police arrest a man they say witnesses a crash --and then beat the driver involved in the wreck. the crash happening last night in altoona. police say 56- year-old steven webb, of pleasant hll, began hitting the man after he apparently tried to leave the scene of the crash. webb allegedly knocking the man out and still punching him when officers arrived. he was taken to the hospital with serious injuries. webb is now charged with willful injury. police are asking for help in a local arson investigation. it's in connection to an incident at the 400 building of the oakwood village condominiums in coralville last month. iowa city crime stoppers is offering a cash reward of up to one-thousand dollars for

"everyon their loved ones buried at a site where they can go to mourn them, love them, and bring little things for them. i would almost think it would be like having a missing person to not have that closure." he will be buried with full military honors next monday in the arlington national cemetary near washingnton d-c. --73 years to

good evening, i'm rick coleman. there will be six state championship football games in two days uni-dome. don bosco kicks it off right after 10 in the morning with the 8 man title game against harris lake park and immediately following--gladbro ok-reinbeck looks to defend its class a title against algona-bishop garrigan. don bosco enters the game with an 11-1 record and has won seven straight by an average of 59 points... including a 72-0 win over midland-wyoiming in the state semifinal round. the

football championship against a harris lake park team which enters the game unbeaten. gladbrook-reinback enters the class a state championship game unbeaten after beating top ranked st. ansgar in the semifinal round last week. the rebel defense has only given up an average of six points a game... kick off with unbeaten bishop-garrigan is 1:38 tomorrow afternoon. on friday night... iowa city west wi moines dowling from winning its fourth straight 4-a state title. the 10-2 trojans have won seven in a row since losing two straight games in mid-september. dowling is coached by former dike-new hartford head coach tom wilson----and maroon have an amazing 51-2 record over the last four seasons. dowling beat ankeny cententenial 41-17 in the semifinal round.. the dowling players say before they bring home a fourth straight championship
