"we're switching it from columns, from aggravated assault to now homicide. that hurts. he's not just a column. he's not just a statistic. this is real life." our top story tonight. an area man's death may change the way local police are investigating -- but it doesn't take any of theh victim's family. police in waterloo say 45- year-old shawn north recently died -- from complications to gunshot wounds he suffered 15 years ago. while the case has been cold as an assault investigation -- it is now re-classified as a homicide. kwwl's lauren moss speaing with north's sisters today- she joins us

15 years..that's how long these sisters have been caring for their brother. it's been 15 years of heartache- with complication after he was never the same. you could never be the same. shawn north's life was forever changed on may 2001 he told police two men wanted to steal his truck- when he denied they shot him in his driveway. the suspects then took off- leaving the car but taking shawn's independance. his sisters there every step of the way. loved him..no one else would come in the middle of the night or holidays or weekends..so i did. it's been 15 years of complications and infections- adding to his sisters heartaches. thankfully he didnt die but then you question what was his quality of life..he was never the same. you could never be the same. ultimately- a complication from one of his gunshot wounds killed him. his sisters- still coping with his loss..

"an then when i hollard oh my god, the person didn't check to see if i was under the car, they proceeded to put it in gear and drive out" "now this is where vergie says she usually sits at the end of her love seat, and this is where the car came through her appartment. she says if she was sitting in her usual spot she would have been hit" "it was just like okay i am gonna sit down i know it wasn't then just to see a car sitting

"i mean physically i am okay, but mentally i am kind of tramitized by the whole ordeal" rivers has been charged with operating under the influence though he tells me he was not his breath. bailey...news seven...kwwl for now vergie is staying in a hotel--she says even when she something else will come through the front window. police say an area man was stabbed several times today during a disturbance with his wife. 42-year-old vanessa tillman- johnson faces an assault charge

early this morning. officers responded to the couple's dubuque house in the 18- hundred block of white street. once inside -- they say 40-year-old matthew johnson was restraining the woman by holding her arms. police say johnson was stabbed by his wife numerous times. he was taken to the hospital for non-life threatening injuries. an eastern iowa crash turns deadly. the one-car accident happening in cedar falls -- at the interchange of highway 57 and highway 218 at around two-44 this afternoon. witnesses say the car struck a pillar near the interchange. cedar falls police say a man was the only person in the car at the time of the crash -- and that he was found dead at the scene. they say an investigation into the accident is continuing to come. new at six -- police in the area are investigating a possible case of animal torture on a deer. we're going to show you a picture of the deer -- but want

disturbing. the bremer county sheriff says it found this deer with a rope around its neck after recieving a call to the 100 block of main street in plainfield over the weekend. officers say its antlers had been removed and it appeared as though the animal had been dragged to the spot. an invesigation with the d-n-r is now underway. elsewhere -- the dubuque community school district now has a committee to book. the 11-person committee met for the first time today to talk about the perks of being a wallflower--a book assigned to students this year at hempstead high school. this after a formal complaint brought forward by a concerned parent -- alleging the book contains graphic material, and normalizes drug and alcohol use. we'll have much more on this coming up tonight on the kwwl news at ten. in a kwwl follow-up a grand jury

face criminal charges for shooting a man. it happened near coe college in cedar rapids during a traffic stop at the beginning of the month. kwwl's kristin rogers explains how this process will work--kristin? the jury will be made up of seven people-- chosen randomly from the community-- it will take five of them voting it's created waves in cedar rapids for weeks-- an officer-ine nats of scanner since then people have been demanding answers about jerime mitchell nats of protest police not releasing the dash cam video--- multiple protest have taken place--as shown in this youtube video. many people waiting in the hallway of last weeks city council meeting--wanting answers. friends say mitchell is

from police--said mitchell started some sort of fight with the officer before getting shot-- but many people--want to be able to see what happened. nat from protest officer lucas jones who pulled the trigger is on administrative leave-- jones was a part of another officer involved shooting just last year--something many are questioning. "an officer who has a history in shooting you know killing somebody and now paralizing somebody that doesn't add up, something needs to be done they need to let although a man was killed in last year's shooting--the shooting was deemed justified. whether officer jones faces charges-- the jury will be given all of the evidence--and they will decide-- something the linn county attorney believes is in the public's best interest. jerime mitchell's family has

downtown dubuque, part of that community for over 100 years. it's now known as steeple square. kwwl's shirley descorbeth live in dubuque with details. shirley. many people here in dubuque have fond memories of saint mary's parish. they tell me...this project will benefit the community. renovations are taking place at saint mary's parish... a landmark -- with strong ties to dubuquers. "ie married here 48 year ago this old church closed several years ago... and it was at risk of being torn down. but then a group of about saving dubuque's rich history. those involved say it's also about revitalizing a part of the community that for so long had been neglected." it's now being transformed into a center for the community called steeple square. "now this area here is gonna be converted into a vibrant community center, that will be

various activities." the campus will also include a childcare center...here at the rectory. and its former school is being converted into an affordable apartment building... one that'll be used to house homeless women and children from the maria house shelter. many here, excited to learn of these future plans. "i am delighted to hear of the square...i think it'll be a tremendous benefit to the community." there are also plans to renovate the parish, but i'm told the inside will

another great year of hoops for fans in iowa -- the state swept the weekly awards given out by the big 12, big ten, and missouri valley conferences -- we'll start it off with iowa state's monte morris -- who was named the big 12's player of the week after he notched just the 5th triple double in iowa state history -- morris scored 17 points, dished out 10 assists, and grabbed 10 rebounds in the cyclones 130, 67 win over the citadel -- that 130 points i t state history -- moving on -- it was peter jok grabbing the honor in the big ten -- jok averaged better than 28 points per game in iowa's 2 hall he set a pair of personal bests with 30 points and 11 boards -- that also marked his first career double-double -- and jeremy morgan rounded out the trio -- being named player of the week in the valley -- morgan averaged a double-double -- 19 points and ten boards --
