(nats) very different views from the frontline where protesters want the dakota oil pipeline route moved away from the standing rock reservation. there's no dispute earlier this week in frigid weather law enforcement sprayed demonstrators with powerful blasts of water. police say demonstrators set fires and tried to storm past

dangerous tactics, not just the spraying, but firing concussion grenades, rubber bullets and injuring hundreds of demonstrators. the father of sophia wilanksy, a 21-year-old protester, says an explosion nearly cost his daughter her arm. sophia is undergoing surgery. (wayne walinskay) "intentionally a police officer threw a grenade that hit her right in her forearm, exploded right as it hit her forearm. there are many witnesses and they have shrapnel." to that, but i assure the citizens of north dakota, the citizens of bismarck area that law enforcement is investigating this and all the facts will be out there." authorities say they didn't use concussion grenades, rather demonstrators attacked them with make shift explosives even rolling one pound propane canisters toward officers. amid all the violence at standing rock, silence. no sound of pipeline construction now because the army corps of

leaders. the standing rock sioux say the pipeline route will destroy sacred burial and prayer sites and they fear the pipeline's proposed path under the missouri river could contaminate water. the consortium funding the 3.7 billion dollar pipeline that will run through four states safe. they also say it is a much on december fourth, hundreds of veterans are expected to travel to standing rock to join the continuing coverage -- back to linn county. a former substitute teacher involved in a sex scandal now wants a bench trial -- no jury. former cedar rapids wash teacher mary beth haglin pleaded not guilty -- but admitted having a relationship with a 17-year-old student when she was teaching at the school. she wanted her trial moved to another county because of the media coverage -- but since there's no jury now -- it will be in linn county again. it's scheduled to start monday.

some state employees are concerned with governor branstad's idea of changing the collective bargaining law. many police officers would be affected. the governor wants to see a statewide health insurance program to save money -- but some officers say they've got questions about that -- and feel they've earned "it's just one more thing for effect future candidates when they look at the state of iowa and say well, they're not allowed to negotiate this, maybe i should go somewhere that does allow package." this is something we expect to hear more about in the new legislative session. republicans now control both houses and if this is something they -- and the governor -- want to move forward with -- the path is clear for them to do that. killed in afghanistan. the soldier died when a suicide bomber attacked an airfield in afghanistan. the taliban claimed

has died after a school bus crash this week. we are learning more about what happened and the man behind the wheel. reid binion has that story. "it's something i've never never experienced before." community leaders in tennessee -- coming to the aid of grief stricken families... ...amid news of a rising death toll in monday's fatal school bus crash... "i saw mothers literally passi o all in the floor. the screams. i can still hear them." the community -- absorbing troubling new details about the incident... ...and the man driving the bus when it swerved off the road facing numerous charges, including multiple counts of vehicular homicide. he'll be in court next week. according to "the driver's driving history investigated by our agency that's also part of investigation." additionally the n- t-s-b says

"we received toxicology reports back today from the tennessee bureau of investigations that shows no trace of alcohol or drugs in the driver's system." i'm reid binion reporting. this morning, a registered sex offender is behind bars and hospital after a crash. the iowa state patrol tried stopping a car for speeding in johnson county tuesday morning. the driver kept going -- before crashing on a gravel road. crews were out yesterday working to fix the pole the car hit. jeff rangel, junior was arrested. a girl was in the car with him. we know they knew each other. authorities were very concerned when they learned he was on the

"i estimated at the time maybe 80-85 miles an hour when he went clocked at 100." the girl is in critical condition. rangel faces charges and is being held in the johnson county jail. firefighters are needed at a home in on briarwood drive. there's damage to the upper level of the home. no injuries -- and no word yet on the cause of the fire. frightening scene inside a wine store. look at this. an e-cigarette exploded inside an employee's pocket. you can see the sparks.

"it's sahow of force, a show of respect, a show of honor." he was 29 years old. a suspect has been arrested. another community comes out in full force to honor a fallen officer. hundreds marched from alamo

they're honoring detective ben marconi. he was shot and killed sunday as he wrote a traffic ticket. police arrested a man who said he was angry about an ugly custody battle - and quote - "lashed out at somebody who didn't deserve it." police dash cam video shows an officer bringing down a man who tried to ambush him. it happened in idaho. an officer pulls over a car without a plate. the owner is wanted for not wi the car. when the officer walks behind it -- the suspect -- jumps out of the trunk -- and attacks. the officer wrestles him to the ground. the suspect and his mother were both arrested. continuing coverage this morning: a new strategy for pipeline protesters. they now driving around north dakota to get their message out. police say they're disrupting traffic. police stopped several cars. protesters say that was not justified. "i think pulling people over and having assault rifles and gas

is kind of ridiculous." the pipeline would run through four states -- including iowa. almost a year after a deadly accident -- a bus driver has been fired. former cy-ride driver benjamin clague had been on paid administrative leave -- making more than 28-thousand dollars after the crash in ames last year. emmalee jacobs -- a center point urbana grad and a student at iowa state wask days in jail for not reporting an accident -- as a part of a plea deal. prosecutors say they couldn't prove a more serious charge against him because it was unclear if he immediately knew he had hit jacobs with the bus. kwwl reached out to cy-ride asking why clague was just now fired --but we have not yet heard back. this morning, there are still many questions about what happened to a two- year-old girl found by herself in wright

and no shoes. authorities were able to identify her and she's now with human services. the sheriff says calls from the public helped as they tried to identify the girl and her family released. an iowa man could spend up to 25 years in prison for robbing a bank. brandon brown admitted stealing more than four- thousand dollars from the f and m bank in mon brown showed a weapon and pointed it at a bank employee. this morning, many eastern iowa families are worrying -- and wondering -- where their loved ones will live next year. yesterday, we learned ridgeway place in waterloo will close in february. more than 70 seniors who live there will have to find a new home. sean brown flew from new jersey this week and says he wishes the "i"m really disappointed to find that she has such a short time, that even if they are closing

and making arrangements that time of the year." administrators say they will help residents find another place. they'll host an open house where seniors and family members can meet with representatives of other assisted living facilities. this morning, many businesses are cheering a court decision about overtime rules. right now, employers can skip overtime pay for some salaried workers who make more than about 24-thousand dollars a year. some are critical of that -- saying businesses can pay low-level managers as little as 25- thousand -- even if they work 50 or 60 hours a week. the obama administration wants to lift that threshold -- to more than 47-thousand dollars. a judge has blocked that. the court decision means the rule -- which was supposed to take effect in about a week --

elect donald trump takes over in new this morning -- the world's oldest pilot is turning 99 next month. he lives right here in iowa -- and has no plans of slowing down emily zink catches up with him to find out what keeps him flying. "there's something magic about it." ernie smith of red oak iowa loves to fly. "you put the coal to it and get about 40 miles, 50 and suddenly she starts planes started when he was a little boy. "and they'd fly over just before dark and i'd sit out on the hill north of the house." smith was hooked. he constantly thought about flying. "i thought i knew how before i ever started really." smith got his pilot's license in his 20's. the original hangs on the wall at the red oak airport. "that's when i first started flying in omaha." he flew for decades. but in his

he was grounded for sometime. "my wife passed away about five years ago now and one of the boys out here said ernie.. you've got to get something to keep you living." an old flame was re-ignited. "this is his first love, i always say this is dad's first love." in his early 90's, smith re-applied for his pilot's license. "orville and wilbur wright's on it see. a lot of people ask me if i knew them. no, i didn't know them." every two years smith has to see the doctor and pass a medical exam to fly. "he said we'll see you in two don't think so, he said why not?" one month shy of his 99th birthday. amazingly...smith still flies. "we went to the guinness book of world records, looked up the current holder, and found out ernie was older." his great grand daughter abby thinks "i can actually prove that it's real he's the oldest one." for smith the record is great. but still being able to do what beautiful

the annual macy's thanksgiving day parade is in its 90th year. more than three million people this morning to see it. more than 50 million around the world will watch from home. expect to see 16 giant baloons, including the return of charlie brown and the debut of a balloon from the new movie "trolls." you can watch the parade right here on kwwl this morning. the big event will feature eastern iowa cheerleaders. the dubuque senior varsity team is set to perform. they're among 400 cheerleaders from all over the country there for the parade. we've heard they will perform
