captioning sponsored by cbs this is the "cbs evening news." >> jeff: good evening, everyone, i'm jeff glor, a fast moving and deadly chain of events in las vegas this afternoon. when it was over five people were dead including two police officers. the violence began at a pizza restaurant and ended at a nearby wal-mart. we begin tonight with brandon scott. >> reporter: it was 11:30 local time when a man and woman entered cici's restaurant and opened fire. the man was wearing a bulletproof vest an armed with a high-powered rifle. witnesses heard the suspect say this is a revolution. they shot and killed two police officers eating lunch. one in the head. they then grabbed the downed officer's weapon and ran across the street to a wal-mart shooting and killing someone near the front door. >> i saw their guns in their hands. and he just told me it was a

revolution and he had just killed two -- >> within minutes police officers in swat teams quickly vouned the store after reports of shots fired inside. >> after a fire fight inside the store with officers the female shooter shot the male shooter and then she was killed. either by police or self-inflicted gunshot. brandon scott, cbs news, los angeles. >> jeff: tornado warnings were issued across eastern colorado today. at least two tornadoes touched down near denver. amateur video captured a funnel cloud near fairplay. one person was injured in aurora. 84 miles southeast in callahan heavy hail coated the ground, flash flood watches were issued in the southern plains were some areas reported midday totals of over three and a half inches of rain. thunderstorms are expected to move east this week and bring more heavy rain. >> tonight a fierce bat sell taking place at the airport in karachi.

it's been attacked by militants. cbs's farhan bokhari is following this from islamabad. what are you seeing and watching inside pakistan this morning. >> so far at least five people have been killed. this includes five or six airport employees and at least two terrorists. this seems like a very well organized attack. there are some indications that the militants came in dressed as airport guards and managed to get inside the airport premises. they seem to be very well armed. farhan bokhari inside pakistan tonight, thank you so much. we are learning more this morning about bowe bergdahl. he is talking to doctors about his treatment in captivity. but he is not speaking to his family. jeff peg ayes is nes want has more within sarge bent beg dahl is still in a hospital in germany where he is being monitored and

prepared for his return to the u.s. after five years in the custody of the taliban. bergdahl who is now telling the details it of his captivity to military officials says he spent at least some of that time in solitary confinement. a form of punishment after two failed attempts to escape. but the content of bergdahl's debriefings are not being shared with top ranking congressional officials. according to dianne feinstein chairman of the senate finance committee. >> i think this whole sort of deal has been one that its-- mrtion has kept very close and in the issues of many of us, too close. >> her republican counterpart saxby chambliss says he's also been kept out of the loop and that bergdahl's account of his captivity will ultimately be difficult to corroborate. >> that's not to say they're not absolutely true. but we weren't there. we have nobody who was on the inside. so we don't know exactly what happened in his life over the last several years.

>> reporter: next week the house and senate are holding herrings about bergdahl's time in taliban custody and the circumstances surrounding his release. republicans and democrats have raised national security questions about the prisoner swap and the white house decision not to inform congress in the advance. >> what i know today is what the president of the united states knows. that it would have been offensive and incomprehensible to consciously leave an american behind. >> reporter: secretary of state john kerry dismissed criticism that the five prisoners will now be an asset to the taliban. >> i'm not telling you that they don't have some ability at some point to go back and get involved. but they also have an ability to get killed doing that. >> reporter: the defense department says it's focus is on giving bergdahl the care he needs a week after his release. he has still declined to speak with his family. jeff, his parents have received multiple e-mail threats in the last several days. the fbi says it is investigating. >> jeff: thank you invest.

investigators are focusing on the truck driver in the crash that killed one man and critically injured comedian tracy morgan. and there is no word on morgan's condition tonight. here's anne-marie green. >> the accident left tracy pore began with several broken bones including his nose, leg and ribs but doctors say after undergoing surgery he's more responsive. the driver of the tracker trailer, 35-year-old kevin roper has been released on $50,000 bail. he's being charged with death by auto and four counts of assault by auto. police say roper failed it to observe slowing traffic and swefbed too late to avoid hitting morgan's mercedes limo bus prompting the crash involving a second tractor-trailer and three other vehicles. the driver of morgan's limo tyrone gale wrote this on his facebook page. i can only say feeling helpless on the highway was very hard to take. there was nothing i could do but scream at times. joan claybrook is the former head of the national traffic

an safety administration. she says driver fat agency is a leading cause in many large truck accidents. >> they can work up to 80 hours a week, truck drivers can. this is unsafe on the american highways for all of us. and most of the people who are harmed in these crashes are people in cars. >> reporter: data from a u.s. department of transportation study showed there were 317,000 police reported motor vehicle accidents involving large trucks in 2012, nearly 4,000 of those accident its resulted in fatallities. traveling with morgan were his friends and fellow comedian james mcnair, arty fuqua as well as his assistant. mcnair was killed, the others remain in critical condition. >> the new jersey state police and the national transportation safety board are continuing to investigate. roper is expected to make a court appearance monday. >> jeff: anne-marie green thank you. the day after the belmont stakes the harsh words from the co-owner of california chrome continue. here's don dahler.

>> jeff: the red carpet outside the tony awards tonight. the awards are set to take place right here in new york city and you can see the tony awards on television right here on cbs this evening. the tonys cap another successful season on broadway but not a cheap one. ticket prices have gone up 21% since the end of the recession. jill schlesinger is here with more tonight on this. the average ticket price is now almost $104. why is that? >> well, we've got a big demand from tourists. they actually account for 66% of broadway ticket sales. so lots of demand there. when you look at the producer side to put a production in place it's really labor intensive. you can't just get a robot to do the job of an acker and also a seat on broadway is actually perishable, meaning that once it's sold and it's filled, you can't do anything else with it. no more revenue to be made. as a result, for a family of
