accused of not only escaping from inmate work release, but also stabbing a police officer, stealing a police vehicle, and police chase before being reapprehended. that officer that was nearly stabbed dealing with the second time he was nearly killed in the line of duty. >> we have a puncture but it did not go through the vest and injure the officer. >> reporter: police stun, and thankful, and that is a knife inches from killing one of their own in a moment, steeped in adrenaline. >> this is another great story where bullet-proof vest from a not a bullet but a knife saved his life. >> reporter: police say just before 1:23 year-old matthew miller went missing from work release, bensalem. one was 38 year-old bensalem police officer michael jam minute ski. he stopped him at bristol pike and woodhaven. miller complied. but right before the cuffs are about to be put on a fight

breaks out, miller pulls a knife and stabs the officer in the abdomen. >> he went for misdemeanors to attempted homicide on a police officer. >> reporter: ballistic vest that is standard issue somehow prevents injury. miller then hops in the police cruiser, drives into northeast philadelphia where he is later spotted and captured on foot near benjamin rush school. police called the officer very lucky and thankful to be alive and tell us this isn't the first time he has had a brush with death on duty. >> he went through a traumatic experience a couple years ago in a very bad car accident where a car burst into flames. he was lucky to be alive there. >> reporter: while on duty? >> while on duty. >> reporter: while on duty that first incident was back in 2011. the the officer was going to assist another officer, making an arrest, he came away from that one with two broken wrist. meanwhile miller is expect to be arraigned on charge these evening. that is latees from bensalem police headquarters, i'm steve

paterson for cbs-3 "eyewitness news". >> thanks very much. heroin at school, questions a bound tonight after a first grader shows up with the drug in west philadelphia. classmates taken to the hospital as a result. live at 6:00 "eyewitness news" reporter walt hunter is outside john berry elementary school, walt. >> reporter: police credit a young teacher, she saw blue plastic on the little girl's desk. there were ten packets and when she examined them, they contained the deadly drug, heroin. many of the 20, first graders, seemed frightened and confused as police, medics and teachers led them on to a school bus to be checked out at children's hospital after a seven year-old classmate brought ten packets of heroin, into the barry elementary school, opening two of them. >> the child had the product, was playing with it, luckily an alert teacher observed the

kid with the narcotics. >> my feeling is that it is just crazy. >> reporter: parents, upset about their children, possibly being exposed to the drug, which can be deadly, even in small amounts. >> horrible, that is why it is their last day here, ever. >> reporter: as children arrived at chop only one, the student who brought the the drug to school reported minor symptoms, dizziness and stomach pains. >> we do not frisk students, first graders, when they come into school. the student probably had it somewhere concealed. >> reporter: can you tell us what happened. >> reporter: the mother of the drug carrying students seen here with her face covered didn't respond, as she was escorted from the school to be interviewed by detectives, hoping to learn more,. >> she cost not face charges. >> after a drug detection dog was brought in by police, determining no other narcotics in the school, investigators turned their attention to

trying to find out, who put these students at risk, by leaving heroin, where it could be found, by a seven year-old girl who had no idea that they held a deadly drug. school officials plan special counseling for the students, after today's episode, they say those young students had no idea what heroin is, much less, what it was doing in their classroom. that is a question police are trying to answer. i'm walt hunter, cbs-3 "eyewitness news". a teenager bitten by a small shark in delaware is showing us bite marks it left on his arm, this is as cautious swimmers are on alert. boy was bitten at the state park in sussex county. a young sandbar shark and tonight he is home recovering. >> i have been not knowing someone else just got bit. >> reporter: people are feeling uneasy to go in the water after a teen was bitten by a shark. this is what andrew vance's arm looks like after a zanzibar shark got a hold of it. he posted his picture on facebook. the the teen was swimming at the beach in delaware on monday evening. officials say it is unheard of for a shark to bite swimmers in this area. but it is common to see sandbar sharks, swimming near the the beach. >> right now in this area we have the the sandbar sharks, puffing and is there a large amount of young sandbar sharks around. >> reporter: scott newlen says something else could have attracted the sharks. >> there is been a large carc u.s. on the beach. >> reporter: beach reopened tuesday afternoon,. >> this is pretty close too, so it makes you wonder what else is swimming in close.

dozens of philadelphia students and advocates rally for school funding. "eyewitness news" was there as the group boarded busts on ben franklin parkway. they are calling on the state legislature to provide what they call fair funding for city schools in this years budget. superintendent william hite says's appreciates their efforts. >> it is time toe get additional revenue so that we can, provide students with berth services then they are receiving today. >> district faces a 260 million-dollar deficit. the philadelphia 76ers are moving their practice facility, and business operation as cross the river to the camden waterfront. today, new jersey's economic development authority approved an 82 million-dollar tax credit for the sixers. that money will be used to build brand new you practice facilities and offices at martin luther king boulevard and delaware avenue. the the sixers currently

practice at philadelphia college of osteopathic medicine. >> as for us, it is really about can we have a world class place for our players to train and develop. that is most, utmost importance answer to us and the deal and confidence we had, in mayor's team for sure absolutely helped. >> sixers say construction will begin in the fall and they hope to move in that facility in early 2016. the coming months. in camden, i'm cleve bryan, cbs-3 "eyewitness news". well, we have a sneak peak of the new art exhibit at barnes foundation, the world is an apple, the still lives of paul say cezanne, premiered that work. gallery charts his still life paintings over the course of his life and a range of scenes including apple, flowers and skulls. the barnes foundation permanent art collecton contains 69 works by him, the exhibit opens to the public june 22nd and runs through september. kathy joins us now this rain isn't just a nuisance but a real danger out there. >> flash flooding doesn't happen often around here and when it does, it is really something else. we're talking about streets flooded, tunnels flooded. i got this report from the national weather service. is there a report that water is waist high on i-95 north and south at the broad street tunnel and numerous vehicles

are stranded so please if you are traveling in south philadelphia know that the rain is moving out, but the flooding continues and there are issues at citizens bank parkas well. lets look outside we have rain falling even in center city philadelphia here at our studios. we are looking at this rain passing to the north and east but heavier rain fell in south philadelphia and slowly going to move out. now take a look at storm scan three and i'll show you the area as you look across the river the rain coming this way toward south jersey on the campbell's side as we have campbell's field campaign everything is moving toward the north and east right up the river towards north and east through parts of the burlington county and further north and east toward the trenton area really focal point this afternoon started off in new castle county, delaware, made its way through philadelphia and that is moving towards the northeast but right here in south philadelphia we have pick up over 2 inches of rain in a very short period of time and is there flash flooding being

reported. here it is water waste high on i-95 north and south at broad street, numerous vehicles are stranded, also another report, in philadelphia, at the stadiums that the infield of citizens bank park is flooded and of course we have the game tonight. now all of this rain as i mentioned moving toward north east and right new we have a bull's eye where we see red in delran, palmyra, those are rain rates of one to 2 inches an hour, this is really ripe for flooding, flooding of the streets, streams, creeks, here is rain rate right here on haines mill road from delran heading towards moorestown new jersey of 2.38 inches an hour. so this is what we have been seeing. union landing road near cinnaminson, 1.91 inches an hour. so the slow moving storms are going to continue to dump a good deal of rain in a very short period of time and that is of course why we call them flash floods. they happen a lot in the southeast specially texas and

florida. those warm, humid places. flash flood warnings will continue until 8:15 tonight, especially through philadelphia, and into places like gloucester and camden county. i wouldn't be surprised if this spread up towards north and east into burlington county, new jersey. rain amounts of been incredible with this, almost 3 inches in sewell, philadelphia international, two and a half, clayton over 2 inches, nearly # in wilmington and sicklerville new jersey one and a half inches of rain. temperatures are rain cooled in many locations, we will continue to see rain taper off this evening, a break tomorrow with the easterly wind and more showers and storms coming our way for thursday and unfortunately for friday but after that we will definitely begin to clear it out. as we look at our eyewitness weather seven day forecast we can see during day wednesday, temperatures will be warming up but there is a chance of the scattered shower or storm, more numerous storms thursday and friday and we are in the clear with the dryer air mass, and some cooler temperatures,
