♪ >> from the cbs broadcast center in philadelphia this is cbs-3 "eyewitness news". >> now at 11:00 teenager is targeted shot inside this car and police believe the violence may be connected to a bicycle. good evening, i'm chris may. >> i'm jessica dean. >> "eyewitness news" reporter elizabeth hur is live outside the children's hospital of philadelphia where that teen is being treat to do night. liz?

>> reporter: jessica, police say the 13 year old is here at the hospital in stable condition after being shot in his arm and leg. tonight we talked to his neighbors and they tell us this is a kid who stays out of trouble. in fact police say for some reason, this 13 year old was shot today over a bike that was actually stolen from him. tense moments in south philadelphia. >> it was crazy and i was scar scared. >> tina black son and neighbors watching and wondering why police, fire and paramedics swarmed their block on mountain vote. >> i did peek out the window and i saw the swat team. i was like oh jesus. >> reporter: it all began with shooting around the corner at 20th and morris. this is where police say a male gunman and his complies walked up to the passenger side of a car, stopped in traffic. words were exchanged. then at least eight shots fired. striking a 13 year old boy

twice. the shooting witnessed police say by an undercover detective in the area for an unrelated case. that detective told police he saw the two suspects run into this home on mountain street. >> after we got no response, from yelling at the bull horn and knocking on doors, swat made entry into the property. it turns out there was no one inside the property. >> reporter: police say they did, however, recover two weapons. the 13 year old in the meantime we are told was in the car with his stepfather who drove him to his home in the 2,000 block of hamburger street. the 13 year old according to police had fallen victim twice in two days. >> not only was his bike stolen yesterday, today he was shot. so we're going to investigate as to what occurred and why somebody felt the need to shoot this 13 year old boy. >> reporter: there you have i it. police say at this time they believe the shooting today is somehow connected to the bike that was stolen from the victim.

as for the suspects, they are still out there. but police say they are right now questioning the owner of that barricaded home. right now calling him a person of interest. that is the very latest from here live in university city, i'm elizabeth hur cbs-3 "eyewitness news". >> elizabeth, thank you very much. >> one person is dead. 16 others in critical condition when twin tornadoes sweep through nebraska. look at this dramatic video tape that captured those twin twisters carving a path of destruction in stanton county northwest of the omaha. more than half a of of the town of pilger has reportedly been wiped out. they're assessing the damage and the governor of nebraska declared a state of emergency. >> and this is just an "eyewitness news". it shows the damage left behind by the twisters. you can see it is extensive and horrifying. many are being told to stay it way from this area so that first responders can do their jobs. our meteorologist kathy orr is here now with more on how these

unusual twin tornadoes came to be. kathy? chris, during the evolution live cycle of a tornado it is not that rare to see it changing and evolving and having more than one vortices or funnel. two tornadoes touching down and creating significant damage. when you look at the picture it is amazing see this captured. eerily similar to the 1965 twin or sister tornadoes taken from indiana. this was a palm sunday outbreak that included these twin or sister tornadoes and you're going to be hearing a lot of comparisons between these two storms. this particular outbreak back in 1965 was the third worst or deadliest ever in the nation's history and we hope that is not going to be the same for the outbreak out in the midwest right now. locally, we're looking at some showers be thunderstorms as very strong cell heading toward leesport.

reading berks county seeing a few flashes of lightning as we well. 40 miles an hour gusts with this and also some heavy downpours but by the time it makes it into philadelphia i think it will be a few spotty showers a little bit later tonight. coming up the 90s are back and with the heat and humidity, the storms will return. we'll talk about which has the best chance of seeing those with the seven day forecast. chris. >> kathy thank you very much. bears in the burbs. tonight all eyes on two bears that have been covering a lot of ground in south jersey. the latest sightings have come from mt. laurel and evesham and they follow similar reports last week from winslow and waterford townships in camden county. "eyewitness news" reporter diana rocco is live for us tonight in mt. laurel. diana? >> reporter: chris, there were at least three bare sights in mt. laurel today and this is one of the same bears that was believed to be in evesham over the weekend. tonight wildlife officials say they don't think these bears are dangerous or aggressive. they may just be looking for food but they are warning

residents to keep their distan distance. numerous black bear sightings in south jersey has neighbors keeping a close eye on the backyards. >> he was just right behind the trees right over here and i watched him cut through the ya yard, and looked like he was going after one of the bird feeders. >> reporter: he took this video of their unexpected 300-pound guest as he walked through their evesham yard on saturday. >> he was actually standing over like just next to the garage and then he was kind of working his way through the bushes over here around to my yard. you don't always see a bear coming through the woods in your own backyard. pretty cool. >> it was shocking. >> reporter: police believe it was the same bear spotted this morning in mt. laurel near church and mt. laurel roads. causing a authorities to notify school officials. then again around denner time another siting near hainesport and hartford roads. >> the bear population is increasing in the state. we'll see this activity more often. >> reporter: bears have now been spotted in 21 new jersey counties. officials say the harsh winter hurt their food supply as their

natural habitat keeps shrinking they will start popping up in unexpected places. >> we kind of like it as long as he keeps his distance and we keep our distance. yeah. >> i keep the pets indoors, too. >> reporter: kelly's out for night walk notice trash cans in the neighborhood weren't out on garbage night. neighbors are all taking precautions and now they're theiring they'll keep theirs in, too. >> i'm more worried about the deer than i am the bears. >> reporter: so this second bear was believed to be spotted in winslow township just last week. state gaming officials are not actively looking for these bears because they don't seem to be that aggressive or harmful to people, but they are warning everyone in this area not to approach the bears if you see them to keep an eye out and the trash and to absolutely never feed the bears. we're live in mt. laurel tonig tonight, diana rocco cbs-3 "eyewitness news". >> did not feed the bear. all right. diana, thank you very much. well, chopper three over a building collapse in north philadelphia tonight. this the 2200 block of deli street. no one was injured here.

but five people have been displaced. we're told they're now being assisted by the red cross. happening now, delays on interstate 95 a new traffic pattern is taking shape to make way for more construction. chopper three is live over 95 between girard and allegheny. penndot is shifting the lanes of traffic on the northbound side starring tonight and that means painting new lane markings on the road. look at that traffic. this is the first step before construction kicks into high gear. crews will rebuild on expand the roadway between girard and al began knee. a similar lane shift in the southbound lan lanes is scheduld next monday. >> update tonight on the condition of comedian tracy morgan. it's some good news. a representative for the star says morgan has been upgraded to fair condition. the rep morgan's personal is even starting to come back. morgan's assistant jeff malia has been upgraded to fair condition. crash on the new jersey turnpike back on june 7th killed comedian james mcnair and

injured morgan 13 other. >> violent unprovoked attack on helpless man and the suspects who did it posted the video on facebook. you see one of the teens walk up to the man and punch him in the face. this attack happened at the aronimink trolley stop in upper darby. the 58 year old victim is nearly knocked off bench there. police say four teens planned that attack. then ran away laughing. >> now to the latest on the crisis in iraq. tonight there's wore the u.s. is deploying several hundred troops in the country as baghdad struggles to repel a sunny insurgency against the shiite led government. president obama notified congress that up to 275 troops could be sent to iraq to provide security for u.s. personnel and the american embassy in baghdad. this is sunni militants known as isis took control of another city. >> we would encourage iran to push the iraqis to address problems in a non-sectarian way. >> more u.s. ships are arriving

ignition switch can suddenly move from run to accessory or off and that can stall the car without warning. it also disables seive tee systems like air bags. this time gm plans to replace keys to rectify the problem. for complete list of those affected vehicles, check out commodore barry philly.com. a warning tonight for the summer travel season. imagine the panic of a fire or emergency dialing 911 and hearing nothing. grieving family says that happened to their granddaughter in a hotel room. and they say a simple fix hotel phone systems might have saved her mother' life. >> dial 911. >> those the words nine year old texas girl expected to hear when she dialed 911 from inside this hoe physical in december. >> she tried four times. >> she said instead of an emergency operator, she got static. >> she told us she did what she was supposed to do. and it didn't work. >> what the girl did not know the hotel's phone system

requires a 91st to reach an outside line. her grandfather says no one taught her that. >> i felt guilty then i got mad. >> reporter: henry hunt's daughter kerry hun died in the hoe physical. kerry's estranged husband locked her in bathroom away from her children then stabbed her to death while her nine year old dialed fruit lesley. >> we teach these kids to dial 911 if there's an emergency. yet we produce phone systems that won't let you. >> reporter: this is not an uncommon problem. a hotel industry group says in more than half the franchise hotels it heard from, a guest cannot dial 911 directly from their room phone. >> it's worse among independent hotels. 68%. >> horrific. horrific numbers. >> reporter: mark fletcher of phone system supplier of via has do you meaned potentially confusing hotel phones nationwide. emergency, dial 55. in another hotel dial 55555. in another, call the operator. or press a separate emergency

button altogether. fletcher says most of these confusing phone systems need reprogramming. >> how expensive of a problem is this to fix? >> that's built in. so what's the cost? it doesn't cost anything. or it's the cost of a service technician to come out for couple of minutes to turn oh and feature. that's what's been done at hundreds of hotels since hunt's murder. the greater philadelphia hotel association says from center city hotels you can dial 911. >> we as a hotel community need to make sure that if a guest wants to call 911, that it's not -- there's no confusion whatsoever. roar report the hunts started an online petition signed by more than 450,000 people for kerry's law. requires all hotel once to have direct 911 service. could kerry's law have made a difference. >> if he had heard a siren 10 seconds later would he have ran? >> nose? some municipalities are moving forward with their own laws much the american hotel and lodging sex says it's making

bucks. i stl think though by the time it makes it towards philadelphia they will be some spotty showers. out to the west where we have the twin tornadoes earl until nebraska this outbreak continues to move eastward. we're seeing it in places like minneapolis, even iowa right now, you can see that bow echo forming signifying whipped damage and a hook echo right there as you head into wisconsin signifying rotation and thunderstorm and potential tornado. here are all the funnel cloud and tornado reports and this goes to go to continue unfortunately through wises were over the course of the overnight hours. so additional damage expected overnight which is very scary obviously after a night has fallen right now locally temperatures in the 70s in the poconos still 72 millville 72. warm from north to south. look at washington still holding oh ton 82 degrees. state college a rain cooled 69. high pressure dominates our weather and we're almost like in a summer like pattern with heat and humidity. 90 for tuesday. 90'ss for wednesday. even warmer getting close to the
