2014. good morning. thanks for joining us. i'm marlie hall in for anne-marie green. secretary of state john kerry arrived in iraq this morning. he'll meet with iraq's prime minister nuri al maliki and urge maliki to give more power to his political opponents. kerry calls the sunni advance through iraq a critical moment in the middle east. on sunday they took control of two more border crossings into syria and jordan, a key u.s. ally. president obama told "cbs this morning" anchor norah o'donnell it could pose a threat to the entire region. >> the problem with isis is the fact that they are destabilizing the country that could spill ore into some of our allies like jordan and that they are engaged in wars in syria where in that

vacuum that's been created they could amass more arms, more resources. >> susan mcginnis is in washington with more. susan, good morning. >> marlie, good morning. the president's plan, which secretary kerry will deliver today, is to urge and help iraq to form a more inclusive government, to actually hand over political control to some of these political opponents before this insurgency can gain any more control. secretary of state john kerry is in baghdad today meeting with iraq's prime minister and other local leaders. he's on a diplomatic mission, talking about what assistance the u.s. is willing to offer to help stop sunni militants gaining control of cities and towns in northern and western iraq. at a news conference in cairo sunday, secretary kerry warned middle east leaders of the growing theft. >> none of us can afford to leave that entity with a save haven which would become a base for terror. >> the islamic state of iraq and

syria now controls at least three border crossings near syria wihich will allow the grop to move weapons and fighters from syria into iraq. in an interview on "face the nation" president obama said we must remain vigilant. >> what we can't do is just think we going to play whack a mole and send u.s. troops to countries wherever these organizations pop up. >> some republicans say it's a national matter that requires intermediate intervention. >> we're going to have to deal with them now or later and later, they're going to be harder to reach. >> the president is sending in people to help with the iraqis. >> suggesting that his resignation would be a good

first step to diffuse the tension. secretary kerryst no expected to ask him to step down. >> susan mcginnis in washington. thanks so much. you can see more of norah o'donnell's interview with pro coming up on "cbs this morning." a slow moving storm is saturating the midwest with flooding and rain. from the glats reat lakes to th mississippi valley. also parts of illinois, iowa, north dakota, and nebraska. in minnesota the mississippi and other rivers have been overflowing their banks for days. the crow river is expected to reach its highest level in 50 years. roadways and bridges are closed and people are struggling to keep the water out. major flooding is expected for days. >> an area of most concern is the mississippi river at st. paul where the river is expected

to crest at 20 1/2 feet by friday. that's more than 6 feet above flood stage and three times the water level. this time of flooding in the summer season is extremely rare. typically minnesota only experiences flooding due to snowmelt. the high water triggered mudslides that have caused substantial damage. and in the black hills of south dakota, some spectacular natural lighting for mt. rushmore. saturday evening the severe weather sparked a lightning storm that lit up the national monument. former prisoner of war bowe bergdahl is now receiving outpatient care as a texas military base. bergdahl was moved from a military hospital to begin the next phase of his military rehab tachlgts bergdahl was held by the taliban in afghanistan for five years. he was exchanged for five taliban officials last month. members of his unit says bergdahl was captured after he walked off the base. irl this morning israeli

warplanes attacked nine targets in syria. the air strikes were in retaliation for a cross-border attack that killed a 13 israeli boy. two others were wounded. it's not clear who carried out sunday's attack. the syrian army were a rebel group. more than three months after malaysia airlines vanished it's unclear what happened. there's an arc where the plane may have crashed. that's hundreds of miles south of from the first was expected. a new search isn't set to begin until august at the earliest. it was a memorable day for soccer fans in the united states but maybe not for the best reasons. the u.s. men's national team taking on a formidable opponent at portugal -- in portugal at the world's cup. portugal would take an early
