his sister was over here in the states with him. travels with him. oes all of his arrangements. travel and everything else. here is patrick reed, for the first time ever will fail to hold on to a 5 -hole lead. not without hitting a great shot into the 72nd. high had been 3-3 as a leader or co-leader going into a final round before today. certainly it appeared at one time like he would do it again. he had a two-shot lead. lost it early. recovered it. back up by two again. but then things went the wrong way on the 10th tee. rose and stefani coming up shortly.
6:32 pm
jim: the playoff participants are being shuttled back to the 18th tee where the extra hole. who knows, maybe even beyond the competition will commence in just a matter of moments between shawn stefani. never better than fifth. he is going against a five-time winner in justin rose. he has won at places like
6:33 pm
muirfield village and doral and of course marrion. u.s. open a year ago. justin rose came to the 18th with a one-shot lead. drove it left. he got a little overzell us with his second shot instead of knocking it out into the fairway. actually tried to close down and even attempted to get it to the green with that punch shot through the trees. then of course the par or the bogey save. great putt.
6:34 pm
>> shawn, we are going to play 18, 10, 18. justin, you finished first. you will pick. >> two. >> shawn, you have the honor. play well, gentleman. jim: that way you still have patrick reed on the 18th green. just finishing up regulation. patrick reed will end up with a par as well. patrick reed will end up shooting 7. it will be 79 for seung-yul noh. regulation has been completed we are ready for the playoff. what do you think here, nick? nick: a key tee shot. shawn hit the fairway. rose has been left. i think they will both hit
6:35 pm
decent tee shots. jim: shawn hit a great tee shot in regulation. a lot of roll out. is that left? nick: he looks deflated. oh, left. where is everybody looking? jim: did not seem to even get anyone's attention. nick: no. it has to be back on top of that hill. hmmm. jim: we hear it is beyond the trees on the other side of the cart path. >> it has gone a long, long way down. i will be right over there and report back. jim: all right. there it is. maybe he even has a shot. nick: a crazy shot. let's check out rose's shot first.
6:36 pm
e is looking that way. it will be tight. it will be really good now right down the edge. >> this is going to be fine. it will roll about 75 yards. dvantage rose right now. jim: so rose ideal shape. here is stefani's ball over there. let's see the angle. he might be able. nick: can he get it up quick enough? that is the bottom line.
6:38 pm
jim: there gu. a closer look at shawn stefani. on an upslope which would help. >> he can get it over the trees with the line and fly it on to the green probably with a pitching wedge or sand wedge. but all of those grandstands are between him and the hole. he can move over to the right, get a clear line of sight to the hole.
6:39 pm
one club length from there. then he can play a low running shot and use the contours, maybe easier. they are both playable. just a question of which he wants to play. your guess is as good as mine. nick: david auditioning for sherlock holmes in the upcoming season. with those chops. if he is trying to go over the trees, no problem. >> he can do that relatively easy from where he is.
6:40 pm
>> it is right by a tree though. >> look at it just to make sure. >> mark russell explaining the other option to him. he wants to look at what his tree issues would be. nick: almost like justin rose had but one less tree. >> more than one but less than two if you want to do that. you have the option too of playing it. i kind of like this right here. we can get closer to the left of the pin.
6:41 pm
i think from over there we have no chance of holding the green. >> he is talking about flying it on the green. nick: wow. >> he will get another club ength from there away from it. it is a temporary immovable obstruction. he is taking relief from it. that is the grandstand. he will move to the point where he gets a clear view of the flagstick and further club length from there. jim: interesting, nick. he didn't feel he could hole the green from the other side. nick: i wouldn't think he would be trying to get in that corner over there. you would have thought the odds on anybody making a three to win
6:42 pm
at 18 are slim. he gets one club length and a further club length. that is a pretty jumpy looking lie. he would try to run it into the back section of the green. >> i am thinking the fairway will go left here too. >> ok. jim: a time like this, your mind has to be racing. you have never been in a position like this. he thought through it pretty clearly.
6:43 pm
>> this makes sense. if he can land it somewhere in that area that is what he needs to do. even short of that. land its 40 yards short of the green but as long as it is right of center. left of center will go in the pond. jim: careful. >> that is short. nick: just like justin rose did. it is in. >> advantage rose. he can just play a wedge out to the right. nick: play a wedge to the top of the ridge. >> he has 166 yards to the hole. jim: at that point you are just not happy trying out how to make four instead of three.
6:44 pm
>> you don't have to go for the impossible in a playoff. jim: first ever playoff in the united states. >> he will have a big thump right on that white box. >> this is right towards the center of the green where he should be playing. nick: just up on top of the hill. jim: smartly played. here is the stefani mistake. nick: he did the same thing. they both played the same shot. you have to hold it through and eally hold it through.
6:45 pm
it will go left. jim: now stefani has to hit a spectacular shot. . in all likelihood hole it. if justin wins he moves to 12th. stefani now really backed into a tough spot. >> jimmy, i have to add walking down the fairway justin turned and said did he stay up or is he wet? he did not know shawn stefani's situation when he hit his wedge shot. jim: justin is trying to become he first player to win a
6:46 pm
non-major event on two different courses since vijay won the barclays in 2006 at westchester and then in 2008 at ridgewood where we are headed for the barclays event this year. rose having won the tournament four years back. the trophy that justin took home in 2010 was a rendering of the liberty bell. this would be a very nice pair to have. >> i am standing directly behind them. the point where it last crossed the hazard, i am on the fairway. jim: how many times have we seen
6:47 pm
this david? >> i don't understand it. jim: we saw it with brendan steele. we saw it with rosie in regulation. >> rosie would have had to have gone a long way back. if you go 10 yards back and have the perfect lie you can spin it from. your ball is not away above your feet as it is here. there is a look at it. you just go back and you are on the fairway. >> you can almost draw a line. >> have you five options with your red hazard, drop it to either side. you can take it as far as you want. you can play it as it lies, which is unlikely or play the shot. nick: you are right david. excuse me. bad timing. but it is the same spot. if he land its there as rose was trying to do, open up the face more and it might land dead there and trickle over the hill. >> this is his fourth.
6:48 pm
nick: very similar. >> you can't get anything on it with the uphill lie. nick: it is a line right there. that is what david is talking about. they could have gone back to that spot. it would be a scary 30-yarder you have to land perfectly. i was quite happy with going on that spot. i think that shot is just about playable. jim: we might not even see stefani putt here. just two-putts to win it. nick: it is highly unlikely he will leave it short. when you are super nervous and
6:49 pm
you lag it and forget everything. but it has to go over the hill and gravity should get it to the hole. im: two-putts for victory. nick: there it is. jim: yeah. i will tell you what. what a collection of courses to be able to say you have conquered all. again muirfield village. doral. marrion. soon to be congressional. nick: pretty darn good group. that is as good as it gets. jim: you see by in large classical layouts there. ick: yeah. the severe degree of difficulty. tefani for his five.
6:50 pm
rose has a little outside of a foot away. nick: i think he will concede. jim: you have to hole it out. nick: hole it out. jim: double bogey, six. justin rose and his caddie will have another impressive victory. low round of the week came on friday. justin rose is the winner of the quicken loans national.
6:51 pm
>> we came to the quicken loans national and a u.s. open broke out. you are our champion. >> congressional got its reputation back after the u.s. open. i was excited to play this course. i enjoy this type of golf and test. it tested all of us. 4-under par to win this championship jim: he said he paused and had a dream. we are head to the greenbrier.
