recovery efforts are under way this morning in virginia beach after a powerful storm caused extensive damage and injured at least ten people. the severe weather hit thursday afternoon. a possible tornado may have touched down. homes in a five-block radius were damaged by the strong winds. windows were knocked out and trees blown down. a wildfire in central washington is threatening more than 200 homes. the mills canyon fire burned 28 square miles in just two days, and fire officials fear it may double in size. residents of about a dozen homes have been told to evacuate. and a severe drought has lowered water levels at the hoover dam to record levels. levels at lake mead are the lowest since the dam was built on the california/arizona border. lake mead is the primary water source for las vegas. the dam is also affecting production of electricity. meteorologist eric fish e of our boston station wbz says while

the west is in for more extremely hot weather, the east is in for a summer cold wave. remember super typhoon neoguri, came across japan? it doesn't look like much but it's added energy. quickened its flow across the pacific. there's a trough south of alaska. that will deepen the response and down through here you push the jet northward. what we see by the end of the weekend is a huge ridge way up across the west coast into canada and that's going to send down the cold air out toward the east of it. basically you get this big change. heat in the west and big-time cold in the east. now, it is july, so we're not talk about what we saw back in the winter. but well below temperatures. could see lows in the 40s, maybe even 30s next week. meanwhile we'll be baking out west, particularly where heat warnings are probably going to be necessary.

outside of the temperatures, we're also watching storms. you had all that cold bang up on the east coast and we got severe weather. it's an early heads-up. enjoy the weekend. stormy times ahead. i'm eric fisher, meteorologist for cbs news. fighting between hamas and israel is escalating. hamas has fired hundreds of rockets into israel from gaza since the violence began four days ago. this morning rockets fired from lebanon hit northern israel. israel retaliated with a barrage of artillery fire and air strikes. ko im has our report. >> reporter: gaza militants fired more rockets into israel this morning. firefighters quickly put out flames after one destroyed a gas station in a southern city. >> you doan want to go out from your house to travel.

you can't stay in your routine. >> reporter: israel says over the past 24 hours gaza militants has launched nearly 200 rockets at israel. the iron dome defense mechanism has dropped most of them including one on thursday. >> it's an outrageous attack, unbearable, unacceptable and the idea is to strike back and strike hay mass in order to cease their aggression. >> reporter: they've released over 100 rockets since monday. gaza officials say at least 85 palestinians including civilians have been killed. president obama has called benjamin netanyahu to pledge a cease-fire and he called on both sides to restore calm. tensions are hire. thursday night they clashed again in the west bank. the israeli army used tear gas to try to break up the fighting. ko im for cbs news. this morning secretary of state john kerry is in

afghanistan trying to find a solution to that country's disputed presidential election. he arrived in kabul last night. he plans to meet with the two presidential candidates and president hamid karzai. this morning there are signs of a possible compromise on the thousands of illegal immigrants crossing the border. democratic leaders are leaving the door open for speedier deportations. meanwhile as craig boswell reports, the president is urging congress to approve his request for emergency funds to deal with the crisis. >> reporter: president obama's keeping up pressure on congress to approve his emergency request to deal with a flood of young immigrants at the border and pass comprehensive reform. >> ronald reagan passed immigration reform and you loved ronald reagan. let's go ahead and do it. >> reporter: the president looked to elicit support from governor rick perry who sent a letter in 2012 warning about the

problem. on capitol hill homeland secretary jeh johnson testified about why they need $4 billion. >> given the add transportation cost, customs and border patrol will run out of money by december. >> reporter: it's a tough sell to the senate appropriations committee. >> how can you come to us with a budget request if you don't know how many courts it's going to take to speed up the president. >> this is not a complete plan to me. >> reporter: the administration is likely to face an even tougher sell in the republican-controlled house where the battle lines are already drawn. >> this is a problem of the president's own making. he's been president for 5 1/2 years. >> reporter: while the justice department waits for some to be hired, those are prioritizing the cases of unaccompanied children. craig boswell, cbs news, capitol hill. house republicans are moving

ahead with plans to sue president obama. they are upset that the administration delayed the employer mandate of the health care law. a draft of the resolution was released yesterday and a hearing is scheduled for next week. a deadly apartment fire in the boston area. seven people died including five members of the same family. victims say there was a stash of fireworks stored in one of the apartments. it's not clear if the fireworks played a role. the fireworks played out thursday morning and they could not is skate. >> we couldn't get out. we couldn't open the window. we are screaming. there was smoke everywhere. we almost died in there. >> i couldn't see nothing. my eyes burned. my chest burned. like nothing. i wanted to go down, get saved. >> the building had an alarm system but it idea not go off.

ronald lee haskell is being held in texas this morn on six counts of murder. he's accused of killing his ex-wife's sister, her husband, and four of their children. a 15-year-old girl who is the lone survivor is fighting for her life with a fractured skull after a bullet grazed her head. omar villafranca reports on the shooting spree. >> reporter: mourners console each other and left flowers outside a houston suburban home write they say haskell committed mass murder. he was taken to jail hours after deputies say he shot and killed six people including a 15-year-old child. authorities say he went to the home blocking to his estranged wife's family while wearing a delivery man. >> he was wearing a pullover fedex purple shirt. >> that's when investigators say

haskell gathered the kids, waited for the parents to come home and tied them up. in court a prosecutor described what happened next. >> he then shot ought seven of them execution style in the back of the head. >> reporter: neighbors in this community can't believe this shooting spree took here. >> you see it happen all around in other parts of the world. you don't see it happen here. when you see it here, it's closer to home. >> they're resting in the arms of jesus right now. >> reporter: haskell has been arrested on murder charges. omar villafranca, cbs news, texas. it was to be a break through. a mississippi girl born with the aids virus was born in remission. but she's now showing signs she still has the virus. dr. jon lapook now reports on the disappointing development of her indication. >> reporter: physicians at the mississippi university medical center have been monitoring the

4-year-old girl since her unusually aggressive treatment since infancy. there had been no trace of the active vie riis for two years but a routine checkup showdown the virus had returned. this doctor oversees aids research at the national institute of health. >> they were hoping this would be the first example of a real cure for the baby related to the fact she was treated aggressi aggressively very, very early. >> reporter: the case was very promising because doctors thought the early regimen thought it might have stopped finding hiding places in the bochld she was immediately treated with a three-drug cocktaill cocktail. at 29 days she was hiv negative but after treatment the mother stopped treatment and disappeared for five months. when the child was returned to the hospital doctors found no signs of the virus. normally it must be suppressed
