>> from the cbs broadcast center in philadelphia, this is cbs3 "eyewitness news". >> right now on "eyewitness news," the clouds are moving in. it's been hot and steamy sunday and now it's about to turn stormy. right now storm scan3 is tracking a major line of storms here moving toward our region. we could see some

thunderstorms popping up as early as this evening. good evening you to everyone, i'm natasha brown. thanks for joining us. the heat and humidity are the perfect recipe for storms. right now portions of the area are already under a severe thunderstorm watch. meteorologist kathy orr is in tonight and tracking the timing of this storm as it moves our way. kathy. >> well, good afternoon, natasha. right now we're talking but heat and humidity. there's nothing official from the weather service as far as a severe thunderstorm watch but we have the slight risk of severe weather across the region from the storm's prediction center. we'll get to that. first let's talk about that sultry heat. the high 91, normal 87, the record 98 set back in 1994. we're seeing showers and thunderstorms popping up to our west and they do have a watch out there. right now in philadelphia 90, 86 in allentown, 83 in millville. here's the line of showers and storms, some of which are severe. in central pennsylvania where a severe thunderstorm watch is under way, the watch does continue to move toward the western part of the keystone state and you can see the area

it covers, it goes as far east right here as lancaster county but we do expect this to push eastward tonight or tomorrow morning and include the philadelphia area, the delaware valley, south jersey and of course even delaware. here's a look at our future weather. tonight we're looking at the clouds increase. by 9 o'clock a line of showers and some thunderstorms, not expected to be severe tonight but moving right across its region from the suburbs, in philadelphia at 10:00 11 o'clock right through the i-95 corridor and then they sweep out. monday morning will be dry. here is the threat. a slight threat of severe weather across the region. this is why we think that watch will be issued for the philadelphia area for tomorrow afternoon's storms. coming up we'll be typing the storms and talk about a refreshing change in that seven-day forecast. we want to make sure that you know that you can have your weather on the go and track the storms any time when you're away from your television. download the cbs3 philly weather app. check out live radar, get severe alerts, the cbsphilly weather app is now available for all apple products and the

android version is coming soon. >> all right, kathy, thank you so much. meantime frightening moments for riders on a septa paratransit bus today. it flipped over after a collision with a car in north philadelphia. now, this crash happened this afternoon at 60th and cambria streets in fair hills and that is where "eyewitness news" reporter matt rivers is live with the very latest. matt. >> reporter: natasha, investigators cleared the scene here at sixth and cambria not long ago but as you can see over my right shoulder portions that of accident scene still remain. we're told from eyewitnesses that this accident could have been a lot worse and was caused by a driver under the influence. it was just after 2:00 p.m. sunday when this cadillac blew a light here at sixth and cambria in north philadelphia crashing into this septa paratransit bus that entered the intersection. >> the cadillac ran the light and t-boned the septa paratransit vehicle and flipped it onto its side. >> reporter: al san der was

on the corner when it happened. >> i ran across the street. people screaming inside the vehiclely i held the one lady up. she was hanging offer the seat belt. >> reporter: in total four people inside the paratransit bus including the driver and three passengers were injured and taken to the hospital. a fifth person on the street was injured when this stop light fell as a result of the crash. they're all in stable condition helped out by good samaritans. >> i had a couple other people come up and give me a hand in taking them out. the two drivers or people that were riding in this vehicle took off. >> reporter: police said the driver of the cadillac a 48-year-old male was taken into custody for driving under the influence. he was uninjured. given the severity of the crash those who saw it firsthand say it could have been a lot worse. >> you don't like to see this kind of stuff but praise god nobody was killed in the accident and they were all able to go to the hospital. >> reporter: septa's paratransit service is designed to help senior citizens and those with disabilities get around the city. everyone on board the bus at the time of that crash is

expected to be okay. we're live in north philadelphia tonight, matt rivers, cbs3 "eyewitness news." >> matt thank you very much. now to the very latest on the gunman who killed a jersey city police officer at a drugstore early this morning. authorities say lawrence campbell never tried to rob the walgreens store. instead, he was waiting to ambush police. minutes before shooting 23-year-old officer melvin santiago campbell told a witness to watch the news because he was going to be famous. the rookie officer was shot in the head as he got out of his cruiser. >> the weapon used in the -- by the actor was the weapon of the armed security guard inside of walgreens who has reported that he was attacked and struck by the actor prior to having his weaponry moved. >> the suspect was shot and killed at the scene. campbell was wandered by police for a prior homicide. luckily no customers were

injured. and developing now in the middle east israeli troops have launched an offensive in gaza as the fighting does continue to get worse. already hundreds of rockets have been launchd from both sides. cbs news correspondent alphonso van marsh is in israel where the military is on high alert. >> reporter: israeli naval commandos entered gaza sunday and carried out a strike on rocket launch facilities. >> there was engagement with hamas terrorists. we had a few scrapes, nothing substantial. they had some substantial damage. >> reporter: israel says it's targeting hamas militants but the air and sea attacks are also killing civilians including children. thousands of palestinians fled their homes sunday after israel dropped leaflets warning about a "short and temporary campaign in northern gaza." [speaking foreign language] >> reporter: this man says he is trying to protects his children from death. as israel continues its attacks on hamas targets in

gaza there's new evidence of a growing troop buildup on this side of the border. tanks and armored vehicles are poised near the border waiting for further orders. israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu says his nation has right to defend itself in any way necessary. >> we're doing exactly what any country would do, you would do if you were targeted from across the border. >> reporter: in the town near the border air ride sirens forced israeli troops into a bomb shelter. no missiles fell this time but the entire nation remains on edge. in israel, alphonso van marsh for cbs3 "eyewitness news." >> well, philadelphia police are now looking for the person who stabbed a man and a woman early this morning. it happened inside a home in the 3500 block of welsh road in the northeast. police say the 21-year-old male victim and an 18-year-old female victim are in stable condition. there's no word on a motive behind the attacks. also police are investigating an attack on a septa bus driver in north

philly. it happened just after 1:00 a.m. at 22nd and lehigh avenue. police say two men jumped on a route 54 bus and assaulted the driver and then jumped out and fled in a white mercedes benz. the bus driver did suffer some minor injuries. no injuries to any of the passengers on board. and tomorrow employees at trump plaza in atlantic city are expected to receive warning notices that the casino may be closing if trump plaza does indeed shut down, atlantic city could lose a third of its casinos and a quarter of its casino workforce in less than nine months. the atlantic club closed in january. showboat is closing next month. and revel still struggling, it's threatened to shut down if it can't find a buyer. trump plaza has been a fixture on the boardwalk since 1984. president obama is making a stop in the first state this week. on thursday, he'll be in wilmington, delaware, to speak about the economy and he's also expected to tour the site of the i-495 bridge.

enthusiasts off the coast of virginia. >> three, two, one and we have ignition. >> and that was liftoff of the rocket carrying a cargo slip to the international space station. cigna took off from wallace islands virginia carrying more than 3,000 pounds of supplies food and experimental exercise outfits. nasa says the new clotheing is resistant to bacteria and odor so the astronauts won't smell as much during their two hour daily workouts. saturday marked the 5,000th day of continuous human habitation in orbit. tesla dealerships will soon be coming to the keystone state. governor todd quinones signed legislation allowing the company to open five deal slips in pennsylvania. tesla pushed for the bill because its business model ran up against state law prohibiting manufacturers from also acting as a dealer. thousands of cyclists hit the road this morning all for a great cause. they helped to raise more than

a million dollars in the 42nd annual american cancer society bike-a-thon. "eyewitness news" reporter syma chowdhury was at the starting 39 catch up with a few of these bike here's were determined to make a differ pedaling for a good cause. the american cancer society bike-a-thon kicked off at the base of the ben franklin bridge. more than 3,000 cyclists participated sunday morning, all from different walks of life. >> just a passion from each and every one of these riders is unbelievable. we have cancer survivors here today, one that's 99 years olds, some well up in their 80's. >> reporter: mark fine man is a 40 year survivor and has been cycling in the ride for the past 19 years. he says his first ride was memorable filled with people cheering for strangers. >> it wasn't until i crossed that the significance of what the event was for me as a cancer survivor really hit home. >> reporter: the 65-mile ride continues to buena in south jersey. the group of survivors wearing blue bibs kicked off the events and the other

participants were right behind them. >> it's a wonderful thing to ride with survivors, to ride with people who have survived cancer and come back year after year after year to participate and. >> reporter: and with more participants means more funding. around a million dollars was raised at this year's events. at the ben franklin bridge, syma chowdhury, cbs3 "eyewitness news". >> and a new farmers market opened up today in philadelphia's spring garden section. congregation road did he have shalom partnered with the food trust to open the new proud and mount vernon farmers market. live music and entertainment. the market will be opened every sunday through fall. >> that's right near us, near cbs3. >> i'm happy to hear that. especially in good weather. >> comes in handy. >> maybe later today would be good to head out to the farmers market. may be stormy. >> yeah a-little bit tonight but this evening i think we're okay. going to be warm and humid, even feels humid inside. >> yeah.

>> it is so humid outside. we're look tag humid afternoon from the city to the shore, some showers and clouds down the shore earlier but i hope you didn't come home early because it's going to be a nice evening down the shore. looking at a busy boardwalk in ocean city cape may county. we will be seeing some showers and thunderstorms heading toward the philadelphia area this evening and by the time you see them down the shore, it would be late tonight. so, you'll get in evening activities. stormstorm scan3 showing the showers and storms well to our north and west in a line from scranton through williamsport going towards the southwest. there has been many reports of trees down, power lines down, even hail with these storms. these are severe. there's a threat of severe weather with these. a few isolated severe thunderstorms. a hail report here from chickorypa: a lot of reports with this line. some of this is going to move towards us but a bigger threat will be rolling in during tomorrow afternoon. we'll talk about that.

first right now in philadelphia 90. the high today 91 degrees. we have had several 90-degree days so far this month. allentown 86. 87 in wilmington. down the shore, keeping it real, keeping it cool, margate 8080 -- 75, rather, seventy four sea isle and look at that ocean water temperature. warming up to 71 degrees after arthur really stirred things up a couple weeks ago. here is the slight risk of severe weather. this particular area, the storm's prediction center says you could see some severe weather in this region but what does that mean? well, the main threat is going to be damaging winds. of course, heavy downpours could lead to flash flooding concerns. we've seen that a lot during the spring and during the summer. frequent lightning a possibility, damaging winds a good possibility. some hail with these storms through central pa. so, we'll keep that at a moderate level and tornado risk would be low. perhaps an isolated tornado in that entire area of the watch. now, as we work our way through tomorrow this front gets a little bit closer, we

have a much cooler air mass to the north and west. that combined with that heat and humidity that it will be bumping into will create that threat of severe weather. here's the way it looks right now. scattered showers and storms to the west. moving through our region late this evening between about 10:00 and midnight. by midnight still seeing that heavy rain and then tomorrow morning looking mostly cloudy and it will be humid. that hazy kind of day. now, during the afternoon, 2 o'clock, some isolated cells with heavy downpours. a big concern will be training. the rain going over the same region over and over again. if we see that we'll have a better risk of flooding but you can see of course the -- through the course of the day we're seeing spotty showers and storms and some lines of storms as well right through the late evening hours. keep you posted on that. we've been talking about the potential for the polar vortex to make a return tomorrow. it's really the cooler vortex, a piece of colder air dipping down and by wednesday into the latter part of next week it will be much more comfortable around here. so, late tonight we'll look

for showers and storms, the low temperature going for 74 degrees. during the day tomorrow temperatures will be around 90 degrees. my computer seems to have stuck a little bit here. but -- yeah, i'm having a problem with my clicker, but i can tell you that we're going to be seeing highs around 90 degrees tomorrow and then we'll be seeing temperatures that will stay sticky through the beginning of next week for tuesday, wednesday, thursday, friday back into the 80's with more comfortable conditions. i'll try to get that seven day to you by the end of the broadcast. for now let's sends it to lesley, hey lesley. >> hey kathy. with the phillies finishing their series with the nationals, the last game before the all-star break, chase utley showing off his all-star jersey headed to minnesota for the mid summer classic. first inning two on, nobody out and former phil jayson werth golfs the ball over the wall in left for his 12th homer of the season.

in the sixth nationals breaking the game wide open. ian desmond with the fly ball over ben revere's head. two more runs score. it's now six nothing. next batter to left field, desmond scores and the phillies now down. ryan zimmerman in the eighth crushes this pitch. it lands in the stands in left center field and the phillies will head into the all-star break 11 games under .500, now 10 games out of first. 10 to three the final. >> not pleased, not pleased with the record. showed spurts of improvement as of late but things to look forward to the second part of the season having cliff lee back in a short period of time, ruiz will be back. >> take it on the road and then come home, lost two out

of three, so we'll see. i mean, just got to worry about ourselves and go from there. >> the world cup final, germany versus argentina. this is a rematch of the finals in 1990's and the german won that one. first half, argentina draws first blood. goal disallowed. they were off sides. extra time in the second period germany on the attack. they will score in the 113th minute. didn't leave much time for argentina to get the equalizer. 117 minutes. messy with the free kick, it is high. that's the match. the germans win their first world cup one-nothing the final. carmello anthony staying in new york. today on his web site he announced he chose to return to the big apple because he is a knicks at heart. knicks making it very clear how much they wanted to keep him offering to pay him the maximum allowable salary.
