laura araujo needs to know. and thinks the man police after rested in that case, jeremiah jackson, he has now been charged with murder. tonight there are several big developments in this story. good evening, i'm chris may. >> aim jessica dean. araujo's body was dumped in an empty lot in north philadelphia on monday. and tonight we have a team of reporters with new details on this still, working story. matt rivers spoke with the man who uncovered the body but first walt hunter is outside police headquarters with more on the suspect and the charges, walt? >> reporter: police sources now say the accused killer has been, made a full confession at homicide headquarters. police saying he was driven, thinking his victim had cash and seeing that she drove in his view a expensive car. so, they say he strangled and beat her to death, hoping to get his hands on some of the money. investigators who now gathered evidence inside rooming house where 23 year-old laura araujo was murdered, say that she was worried about fellow resident

jeremiah jackson, so worried that after living in the house for just one week, she was planning to move out. just didn't happen in time. >> there may have been a prior contact with the individual and she thought her best interests to leave that home. >> reporter: 22-year old jackson who lived down the hall way now charged with strangling the victim after a prolong beating during which he tried to extract bank card information from her. the body of the araujo, a recent graduate of the art institute of philadelphia, found on this kensington lot, stuff in the duffle bag, her hand, tied, her head, and feet covered with trash bags. >> motive was robbery, and it is believed mr. jackson believed that she had some monday which her, some cash report. >> she was a cool girl. she had a lot going for herself. she was respectful. never thought this would happen.

>> reporter: sources say jackson, whose records show a substantial arrest history has allegedly confessed to the crime, seriously burn as he torched victim's car trying to destroy evidence, police say he was found by detective in a local hospital but back at the crime scene the officers say they found something that sealed his fate. his cell phone, accidentally dropped as he tried to make good his escape finally sources say the accused killer did try to put up an alibi he claims he was burn in the fire in his own car. the the problem was there was no fire and there was in burned car that could be found. so that alibi quickly, fell apart. by the way, under new technology here at homicide headquarters this entire alleged confession was recorded on video and could well be played in the future in court. live at police headquarters, walt hunter, cbs-3 "eyewitness news". thanks very much. now to our exclusive conversation with the man

police talk with extensively in this case, man who found the body of laura araujo came to "eyewitness news" today and said he wanted to tell his story. matt rivers is in the satellite center, and matt, what did he have to say. >> chris, young man who found the the body called the the experience the most traumatic thing he has ever gone through. he asked that we conceal his identity, before agreeing to speak with us. >> reporter: it was around 5:30 a.m. monday when this young man was looking for scrap metal to sell. his search, took him to the 2200 block of third street, to what he thought was a pile of trash. it was the place where the body of laura araujo was left in a duffle bag. >> reporter: he was terrifying and then ran, moving away from the body, young man remembered he saw a police car park here near third and dauphin. he said at first two officers

didn't believe him when he told him what he had seen but he took them back down to show him the body he discovered >> reporter: crime scene was soon establish and police thank the man for reporting what he saw, the first step in finding laura araujo's murderer. her family is in his thoughts >> reporter: we asked him why he wanted to speak with us in the first place. he reiterated he felt bad for araujo's family and wanted them to know the facts surrounding the case. live from the sat center, matt rivers, cbs-3 "eyewitness news". >> thanks very much. we will switch gears to the weather now and after two days of severe conditions outside things finally calmed down today. meteorologist kate billow is, there, and she has our first forecast here. >> you sound beautiful evening here on the sky deck you can see the clouds, behind me here a few peaks of blue skies over the city right now and a nice

breeze and very comfortable night to take a walk or find out doors if you are in the city tonight. lets go take a look at storm scan three right now which is showing in the a whole lot. just a few clouds. when you get cool air and that you have front clearing the coast you will get cloud cover but generally speaking we are dry tonight and you can see that upper level storm still bringing clouds in western pennsylvania. when do you get that cool air you run risk of a stray shower, perhaps tomorrow one spot or two in the region gets a sprinkle. that is bit. we are reeping benefits of the cooler influx of air from the north and west, temperatures have drop in the 70's and most spots across our region. seventy-seven in allentown. seventy-nine in wilmington. we are hanging on to 81 at the airport but after three days in the 90's we got to eight for the high. tomorrow once again in the low to middle 80's feeling very comfortable. the just a quick recap of july, so far, hot and steamy month. also a stormy month. temperatures averaged two and a half degrees above normal. precipitation averaged a half inch above normal. high temperature is 97.

>> reporter: betty and her lawyer give "eyewitness news" an exclusive update on the severity of her injuries. shooting happened last week near intersection of hathaway drive and heywood lane in sicklerville. several bullets hit two homes and cars. one of those bullets hit her in the lower back. the she's now home resting but in too much pain to speak about the incident. >> pain in her lower back. it came out and exited through her private parts, explode nothing her stomach like she was shot five times. >> reporter: she's an honor roll students heading in eighth grade at winslow township middle school. family and friend brought her gifts to cheer her up but her road to recovery will be extensive. >> she had to have her bowl reconstructed, she had to have her bladder reconstruction and there has been a negative impact on her reproductive system which we do hope, with further medical treatment will not impair her ability to have children. >> reporter: betty wants the community to come together to speak out, begins gun violence. >> i'm angry.

i want to know who did this and i want to protect other kids from having the same thing happen to them. >> reporter: family plans to hold a peace rally in front of their home saturday afternoon. we have contacted officials to get an update on the investigation, they tell us, so far, no arrests have been made. in sicklerville, syma chowdhry for cbs-3 "eyewitness news". also in new jersey tonight a pilot is hospitalized after he crashed his plane today. seven three-year old victor holman took off from central jersey regional airport, and soon after his plane crash in the yard in the nearby neighborhood. it is a single engine amateur built plane. faa and ntsb are now investigating what caused to it crash. police are asking for help tonight as they try to catch a pair of burglars targeting elderly homeowners in new jersey. eighty-seven year-old irene stoltz is the latest victim on this scam. she lives in windsor township mercer county. she said a man knock on her door and asked her to come outside to talk about theresa

long her property line. what she didn't know was while she was outside a second man went inside of her home and stole family hair looms. >> very special to me. he said now, i have to go meet my boss and he went out, and picked up the money. >> same type of thing with the white pickup truck targeting elderly homeowners and this suspect was described as a hispanic male in his 20's and 30's. >> reporter: in fact police say there have been three similar incidents and three nearby towns just this month. new at 6:00 o'clock tonight a group of 251st responders filed a lawsuit over the paulsboro train derailment. the 2012 accident over the mantua creek caused a rail care to leak vinyl chloride in the air. police first respond's alleged that their detection and monitoring equipment did not work at the scene. conrail, csx, norfolk southern and gloucester county are all named in that lawsuit. the sale of philadelphia

tonight three on your side's jim donovan will explain how airlines are making you pay, even when you plan to carry on, how you can avoid that surprise at the airport, tonight on "eyewitness news" at 11:00 o'clock. well, swimming pool at a norristown community center is closed and may just stay that way throughout the summer. the pool at george washington carver community center, needs at least $30,000 worth of repairs. a donation was in the works, but it fell through when benefactor insisted that the municipality oversee those renovations. town council says the entire pool needs an overhaul and not just repairs. the city says that it is simply too late to open up this summer. well, a big event today to help raise money for alex lemonade stand fund days. >> today was lemonade day at all 22 malvern schools across the area each school, sold lemonade under goodies as well and on held special events like silent auctions and raffles. thinks seventh year malvern school has raised money for

the day. starting off with clouds and blue skies, trying to sneak peak before out on the beach enjoying the day. boardwalk, here, seeing shadows lenghten here and folks on the boardwalk and beach right now at 74 in rehoboth. quick look at storm scan shows a few clouds moving in. our cold front is out to sea. now we have got cooler's from the northwest, big influx of cold era cross the midwest and great lakes. i want to take to you the complete other side of the country our latest typhoon, heading toward china and vietnam with damaging wind and flooding rains. look at this storm on the heels of another storm, of course, impact japan last week this has brought almost a foot of rain to the northern philippines so causing major problems if you have any travel plans or friend and family in china or vietnam definitely keep an eye on that one. temperatures close tore home, much closer to home. eighty-one # at the airport. seventy-eight in reading. seventy-seven at the moment in allentown. you can see how cool it ace cross the great lakes with temperatures in the 60's, in cleveland and buffalo.
