44 year-old andrew bidde were on a boat late sunday night when it crashed in the red buoy that marks the channel. bell surfaced and coached to shore bye-bye standers but there was no sign of biddle. >> he was just so upset criming for his friend. he almost tried to swim back out to the both bet but boat hit the jetty and started to go back out that way. >> currents last night were very strong. >> reporter: nick ruso was on the scene with the fire department and then responded to the accident. >> when this call came in, we went into an immediate rescue type of mode which our people are trained for. >> reporter: but biddle could not be found anywhere. search continued monday morning with the coastguard and state police leading the way. investigators say biddle's boat and channel two marker showed evidence of the collision but unknown what the men were doing on the boat so late at night. both live at the shore and race power boats boats, biddle and his team are the p1 super stock champions.

he runs a village out of sea village marina in northfield. that is where his boat docked and where they may have been heading before the accident. >> we feel very badly, about those families that have been affect by this, and, certainly a traj difficult. >> reporter: state police right now, we understand one of their boats is using the side scanning sonar which vice helpful when trying to recover, missing person. i spoke with the coastguard just a little what i go ago and they say their search included several miles of the inter coastal waterway all the way north to two towns in ventnor. so far no sign have of biddle. we will have an update at "eyewitness news" at 6:00. reporting live, i'm cleve bryan, cbs-3 "eyewitness news". is there developing news right now two men are in police custody and they are charged in the death of the elderly philadelphia couple. one of those suspects was apparently a close family friend. have you learned. >> reporter: chris, we're learning he was more than just a family friend, chris, 26 year-old terry ballard was something like a second grandson, let into that home, dozens of times over the course of his life time. now police say he was the ring leader in a burglary gone wrong, burglary that led to murder. >> angry, hurt, confused, all of the above. >> reporter: on top of theft, on top of assault, on top have of murder, at the the heart of this crime, betrayal. >> what makes it so hardies it is someone that you knew and someone they trusted. >> reporter: charges monday for 26 year-old terry ballard and 19 year-old justin smith. >> they both admitted to their involvement in this brutal, senseless double murder. >> reporter: police say a retired couple, 79 year-old roofus and 66 year-old gladys perry hired ballard and smith to help with home cleaning. the pair had other plans. >> their game plan was to get in there and rob them.

>> reporter: police say caught stealing gladys confronted one of the men they began assaulting her and strangling her. when roofus came to her defense, both men strangled, suffocated and killed the couple. their daughter found them lifeless hours later early thursday morning. >> just something that would you never imagine. >> reporter: deputy streets commissioner donald carlton is the couple's nephew. he said worst part perry's knew materially ballard so well, he is a grandson of the family friend. carlton said they fed him, gave him money, they watched him grow up, and he sars he killed them. >> anytime you have any type of a murder, it is terrible but times ten when it is someone you know and trust and for a small amount of money that they would have given in they had asked for. >> reporter: that small amount of money just $120, and a gold chain, coming up at 6:00 o'clock we will talk more about how that pair was caught, reporting live from

police headquarters, i'm steve paterson for cbs-3 "eyewitness news". >> steve, thank you. crews bat ailed row house fire in the bridesberg section. chopper three over the 2700 block of eddington street, you see where more than a half dozen fire fighters on the the roof of those homes. this is the scene from the ground, police say flames spread to three different houses and it appears a dumpster was smoldering as well. >> unaudible. >> there was a guy in the dog. we got him out. we got our hose and put the fire out and stop it from spreading. >> reporter: causes under investigation there, were no reports of any injuries. one person is rush to the hospital tonight after a vehicle fire, chopper three hd over westbound lanes of the pennsylvania turnpike, between willow grove and virginia drive exchange. this is was around noon time today. we are told driver pulled off the highway towards a wooded area while that vehicle was on fire, no word on what caused the fire. take a good look at this photo here, police are searching for william mack in

good evening, everyone. a very busy day on the roadways, specifically around south philadelphia and center city. lets talk about the schuylkill expressway traveling in the eastbound direction, that is off ramp to 26th street the right lane is block by disable tractor trailer. so heading down towards that part of south philadelphia you will find a delay. you'll find a little bit of volume approaching that ramp as well on the eastbound side of 76. we have heavier delays approaching the vine street expressway and making your way around gladwynn and conshohocken. taking a look at i-95 i was stuck in the mess of traffic on i-95 earlier coming in the station. i will be seeing a disable vehicle on the vine, vine was backup but we are still trying to recover from that on top of rush hour delays. lets pull up the wide and talk about speed sensors. dropping down to to 22 miles an hour. southbound i-95 slow approaching betsy down on the vine. northbound delayed approaching northbound do cottman. watch out for schuylkill around roosevelt boulevard and also traveling average 30 miles an hour on 476. >> so expect the usual.

i'm chris may. here are some of the day's top stories for you. the search continues down the shore tonight for a missing boater. forty-five year-old andrew biddle has been missing since last night, boat he was on hit a buoy in the waters off longport atlantic county. two men are facing charges in the deaths of an elderly couple from strawberry mansion. justin smith and terry ballard have reportedly confessed to strangling the couple last week. police say motive was robbery.

boat, moments after this jet ski operator, long with two fellow jet skiers saw her accidentally plunge in and begin being swept under. >> when she fell in they just zoomed straight into her and started helping her. >> reporter: tyrone weston working nearby say the three jet skiers instantly responded to help. >> went over to his jet ski where he has steps in the back and held split until the rescue team came. >> he got her and held her up and kept her on the surface until we arrived. >> reporter: police say at the the spot where the would the man went in the waters are fast, deep, the current dangerous, and she was only seconds away from going under. >> i believe she was around 61 years old. i don't know how good a swimmer she is good that jet skier did not arrive when they did she may not ab live right now. >> reporter: taken to the police marine unit to be check out by medics, the victim police say is expected to to make a full recovery. >> an inning only her shoulder to day.

>> reporter: an angel ride be a jet ski. the at penns landing, walt hunter, cbs-3 "eyewitness news". philadelphia police need your help tonight as they tried to identified an armed robber caught on surveillance video and here is that tape. police say that this suspect robbed a 28 year-old woman at gunpoint. this happened last week in the 1800 block of broad street, in the the point breeze section of philadelphia. suspect took with that victim's wallet and hundred dollars in cash in badge card and state and student id's. if you are able to recognize that suspect through this video you are asked to call 911. israeli/palestinian conflict claims more lives. at least 25 israeli soldiers have been killed since their ground invasion started on thursday and at least 550 palestinians have been killed since the fighting started two weeks ago. cbs news reporter alfonso van marsh has the very latest from jerusalem. >> reporter: the fight diagnosis not let up, that israelis and palestinians buried more casualties on

blitz of rush hour on the radar. lets start with the schuylkill expressway. traveling in the eastbound direction you will find some major volume between 202 and gladwynn. take a look at the shoulder right here. it seems we have a fender-bender making your way approaching the area of the conshohocken curve, traffic you will notice at this point is traveling in the teens and less than that in areas. so definitely plan accordingly if you you are heading out of the king of prussia area and making your way toward center city. traveling on the westbound side of the schuylkill expressways you will notice it is slow but if you driving on the westbound side, do you have have some volume approaching the vine and then again approaching the roosevelt boulevard out toward conshohocken and then again approaching the the a area of king of prussia it is a bit scattered. as we continue we will take you to the roosevelt boulevard, literal liz five to ten minutes ago the northbound side of the boulevard was jammed packed with traffic all the waste back towards the schuykill expressway. it seems to be sort of moved out some of that volume but still would i say approaching wissohickon out towards broad street you will still be slow.

good monday evening, everyone, i hope you are enjoying pleasant weather and once again here we are six days in a row with high temperature below average. this time of the year typically we will see our warmest temperatures as we average the upper 80's and still nice outside, right now here on the sky deck. lets look at july a bit. we will talk about it. it hasn't been that bad as far as the temperatures go. if you like heat and humidity we didn't have consecutive days this month so far. we have only averaged just over a degree above average, our precipitation for philadelphia has been below average. that depend where you are, it is where those then are storms set up. we did make it to 96 degrees.

the losees temperature was at 64. but things do start to change over the next couple of days. the here's another interesting fact, the warmest june on earth, ever, this just came out. this is because of unusual warmth in the oceans, particularly in the indian ocean and pacific ocean. very warm in the month of june. you combine the the ocean and land temperature you get 61.2 degrees. that is over a dehe gree above the 20th century average. that makes it the 352nd second month with global temperatures above average. amazing. here in the u.s. not quite as warm. we are seeing our 33rd warmest june on record. here's what is happening locally. we had jet stream to the south to the weekend but now it will start to move to the north. that opens up the doors for that heat and humidity. typical late july weather does return to our forecast if you like heat and humidity you'll love the forecast for the next few days. how hot do we get? we will send it back to the studio for kathy for a check of that forecast, good evening. >> thanks very much, justin.

that is amazing, the warmest june ever on earth, just amazing numbers. right now we are looking at a cooler place to be down the shore, of course, the steel pier, busy, beach is packed in atlantic city, atlantic county. skies cam three showing the ocean pretty calm today and deep blue skies with low humidity but that is what is about to change as justin said, heat and humidity will make a major come back to the delaware valley. right now in philadelphia it is 84. in wildwood. seventy-five. seventy-seven in millville. so where is all of that heat it it is in nashville, little rock, through the west, through the plains where we are seeing the temperatures in the 90's and 100. that is moving our way. fair weather high pressure has been protecting us, keeping us dry and it is going to slowly lose its griefs own the region allowing warm humid air to return. we have a cold front approaching from the north and west by wednesday. tropical moisture to the south. we will get squeezed in the mid with the some sultry air moving up the eastern see game. we will make it in the 90's

for wednesday. not just heat but an increase in humidity. that front passes through thursday, and additional showers and thunderstorms, and then as long as that front continues to move off shore, we will dry it out friday with another area of high pressure building in. so a number of fast moving front moving in and out of the region changing us from humid to more comfortable. more like a winter path western how rapidly things have been changing around here. here's a look at how it will feel. the tuesday we're on the sticky side. you will notice the humidity is up but then the wednesday oppressive air takes over and it even, for the first part of thursday, it will feel that way, before the dry air finally, moves in, by late thursday and into friday. so here's the probability of precipitation, rain chances, tuesday only 10 percent. wednesday, 60 percent. thursday, 90 percent. we have showers and storms by friday, 10 percent, again, so it is mid week storms that we're going to keep an eye out for. for this evening partly cloudy and warm. low of 68. for your tuesday, partly sunny, noticeably more humid but we do expect to it stay

elderly couple killed in their own home, and police think they know who did it. one of the suspects is said to be like family to those victims. tonight, we're learning the couple was killed for a little more than $100. i'm chris may. i'm jessica dean. steve paterson is tracking developments live at police headquarters with the lateness this still unfolding story, steve. >> reporter: burglary, betrayal, murder chris and jessica, and of those three it is the second one that family says that hurts them the worst. two men are now charged in the deaths of an elderly come and now one of them were learning knew that couple his entire life. a senseless betrayal. >> two people that would give you anything, if you asked, are murdered for something so small and petty. >> reporter: twenty-six year-old terry ballard was not the just a neighborhood kid, a retired strawberry mansion couple 66 year-old gallonsys and roofus perry but he was a

family friend treated like a trusted son. >> someone that would frequent their how the without any issue. >> reporter: last week the the couple hired and welcome ball andard and his friend 19 year-old justin smith to help clean the home. >> the game plan was to get in there and rob them. >> reporter: police say caught stealing, gladys confronted one of the men. they began assaulting her and strangling her. when roofus came to her defense both men strangled, suffocated and killed the couple. their daughter found them lifeless hours later, early thursday morning. >> the neighbors were a key to this. the neighbors saw, they spoke, they shared with the police. >> reporter: which led police right back to the neighborhood the next day where 29 men were questioned, confessed, and now charged. >> this is just a devastation right now. >> reporter: philadelphia deputy streets commissioner donald carlton and his cousin janet are the couple's nephew and niece. they say the crime is terrible, the loss is sickening but the worst part pennsylvania is the worst parties that the betrayal of
