walt? >> reporter: well, jess, you know, beyond the fact of the case, at a press conference here, police revealed just how deeply the loss of these children has affected all residents from our area, a neighbor who came forward with the cell phone he found, and ultimately led to one of the suspects. the legendary charles barkley, now paying for all of the funeral expenses for the young victims. and on and on. everyone hoping there would be an arrest, and after an around the clock effort, the two suspects in custody in the homicide unit behind me. >> i want to personally thank commissioner ramsey, captain clark, all of the men and women of the philadelphia police department for their exceptional work in bringing these two (beep) to justice. >> district attorney seth williams used unusually strong language to describe suspect corneilius crawford seen here or viewer video being arrested sunday evening, and fellow suspect, jonathan rosa, who surrendered few hours earlier. the pair charged with

carjacking a realtor, targeted at random on a north philadelphia street, then moments later, plowing the car across the sidewalk, killing three children, critically injuring the victim's mother, and leaving the realtor who they allegedly sexually assaulted during the ordeal, hospitalized. >> what he said is that the driver was driving at a very fast rate of speed, and out of control, and with that the tire blew. >> attorney christopher warren says rosa, after seeing the victim's pictures, told his mother, surround entered, made a full confession. >> he is cooperating. he is trying do information his power to erase the image of those poor children going over the hood of that car. >> what they did was in defensible, and also unforgivable. so, what ever remorse they may or may not have, does not bring back the three children. >> meanwhile records show crawford was released by the parole board in april of 2013 after serving barely half of a five to 13 year prison term

for robbery. the parole board saying in its decision: he, quote, demonstrated motivation for success. >> also shows after being parolled, he violated that parole, was put back in prison, then was parolled second time. instead of serving his maximum sentence, which would have kept him behind bars until 2020. the state parole board did not respond to our request for comment. live at police headquarters, walt hunter, cbs-3, "eyewitness news". >> all right, walt, thank you very much. let's talk more now about the suspects charge in the this carjacking and their history in this neighborhood. our team coverage continues. "eyewitness news" reporter steve patterson is live at the crash scene, where the memorial is growing. steve? >> well, chris, i want to talk more about crawford. because as walt just mentioned, crawford was released from prison short time ago with the hope he would turn over a new leave, change the direction of his life, and stop causing pain

for the people around him. but, police say, that did not happen. instead, leaving a wake of devestation, wounding the entire city, and not least of which the people that new him, and fought for him, so much, listen to this. >> it is a heart breaking ends for people who were trying to give 22 year old corneilius crawford a new beginning. >> church leaders across the crown any center say it was only few months ago crawford, just released from prison, walked in looking for help. >> i didn't judge him, haven't judged his past, you know, the way he presented himself to me, i just tried to help him. he wanted to do better. >> youth counselor james molder said he helped crawford find the basics, now a sense of betrayal. >> we thought we did enough for him, fed him, clothed him, gave him a safe may haven. in hindsight you look back what more could you have done. >> long time crossroads volunteer 19 year old jonathan rosa, charged with carjacking,

and sexually assaulting a woman, until they lost control of the vehicle, killing three young siblings. molder, says, he saw crawford just few days before that, and was preparing to take him to a shelter. >> if i could have maybe or someone here on the neighborhood could have just walk him to a shelter, all the way, you know, we might be talking different story today. >> and, there is a rally and vigil scheduled 6:00 tomorrow night, featuring the family expected to make a statement and come out and support here at the scene. we'll of course be there to bring you the latest. this is the late he he is from the tioga section of north philadelphia. steve patterson, cbs-3, "eyewitness news", back to you. >> all right, steve, thank you very much. in other news today, one person dice whether a dump truck and a car collide in montgomery county, chopper three, over that scene, county line road, near jacksonville road. it happened around 3:00 this afternoon. rescue crews, and firefighters, swarm that scene. they tell us it was the driver

of the car who died in that accident. >> officials say a lightning strike is likely to blame for a fire that destroyed a building at a chester county campgrounds. fortunately, no one was injured. "eyewitness news" reporter jan carabeo has a look at the aftermath. >> as the sun shines in east bradford, no sign of the storm that blew through, except this, bent metal, smoldering re mayors of a dead aid old building at paradise camp. >> don't even know how -- the team cabin, it is burned to the grounds. >> scott recalls the moment he learned about his classroom, all that's left now is a 11 years every memory. >> just been doing a lot of reflecting on this. >> around 1:00 a.m. in the morning the teen center in the day camp area was on fire. staff reported lightning, and allowed crack. camper at different area reported flames. fire crews were on scene, in a matter of minutes. >> by the time the fire companies got here, the building was already a lost. >> now, only the steps and chimney remain, the blow couldn't come at worse time.

monday was supposed to start the camp's busiest week, the day camp alone serves about 250 kids a day, here in chester count. >> i there would be laughing, there would be learning. >> but president andy shaw says the day camp had to remain closed monday at the grounds re toward to working order. >> this camp found in the 1875, in this specific area, the day camp area, was built in the 1930's. making this fire even more devastating, because it is a building's historical significance. >> it is painful. it does break our hearts. but, you know, legal good americans, you get stronger through. >> kids will return tuesday with lessons learned about the power of mother nature, and a lesson still to be had about resilience. >> all right, let's rebuild. let's rebuild. >> one of the oldest camps in the country today bent, but not broken. jan carabeo, cbs-3, "eyewitness news". >> lightning also suspected in a overnight fire that damaged a water tower in camden. this morning, the situation under control within an hour. firefighters rescue driver trapped inside a vehicle, partially submerged in water in pottstown. authorities say a young woman drove her car into that standing water on west high street near the railroad overpass, two firefighters did car that i woman to safety. she was not injured. storm scan3, line of some showers, with some heavier downpours, moving through reading, berks county, also, allentown, lehigh valley, and edging into the northern region of bucks county, and also montgomery county. heading toward marlboro, rich

lands, even bed minister. but they are expected to weaken as they move closer to philadelphia. right now, along the i-95 corridor, upper 70s, lower 80s, but looks what's coming, allentown 68, reading, 68. those are rain cold temperatures. but the poconos, that's a cooler air mass with a cold front in the 60s. sixty-four in state college, 63 in philadelphia, or i should say pittsburgh, that's what's coming to philadelphia overnight. winds are gusting over 25 miles an hour, over a good part of the region, close to 30 miles an hour gusts in wilmington, and those winds will persist into the late night hours. so, this evening, look for stray shower, by about 9:00 p.m. by 11:00 down in the 60s, already. we will bottom out in the lower 60s, overnight. cool change is coming, it will be noticeably cooler tomorrow morning. in the afternoon. and our next chance of showers and storms will follow in the seven day, talk more about all of that later in the broadcast, when i join you inside. for now, we send it back to you in the studio. >> kathy, thanks. leaky roof forced 36 people out of their ants in

philadelphia early this morning. residents had to evacuate the building on the 1200 block of walnut st. after a few floors there started flooding. the water damaged the alarm system, that now has to be fixed before the building is cleared for people to return. when severe weather hits, help us, tell the story, if it is safe, snap a photo, post it on twitter or facebook, use the hashtag cbs-3 storms. well, this was a big day in south philadelphia. as the philadelphia eagles held their first public practice today at the linc. about 15,000 fans on hand, they got their first look at the 2014 installment of the birds. it is the first of three public practices, and today, the team held a salute to the military. they also had some music, and other festivities. >> fans are very excited about this upcoming season. >> ya, baby, we're pumped. i can't wait. i'm so, so jacked for this season. >> i think we're going to go

this may appear to be normal photograph. but there is something in this picture that reveals cancer. our health reporter stephanie stahl will show you what to look for, that could have you taking a second look at family photos. that's tonight on cbs-3, "eyewitness news" at 11:00. a mystery surrounding a deadly shooting inside a norristown house. as "eyewitness news" reporter cleve bryan reports, neighbors say it was a case after man defending his home. >> a crime scene remained on norristown block all day after an early morning shooting that woke neighbors. >> i feel squared for my street, because who knows it could have been any house on the street. >> police released few details

about the altercation of this row home on willow street, residents who spoke with detectives will tell us that the shooter was a homeowner, and that the victim was suspected intruder. blaine peers says his neighbor involved in the alter case has lived here most of his life. >> quiet guy. quiet dude. he lives on this block, almost all his life. and for something like this to happen to him, it is craze. >> i peers was relieved nobody in the house ended up killed. >> lucky thing that his mother didn't answer the door. his mom was at work. so if his mom would have been there, and she would have answered the door, this would have been a real tragedy. >> tells us shooter is young man who lost his mother in recent months. they don't know what he was doing at this home in the middle of the night. >> i think it is sad that he got killed, but at the same time, it is self-defense. you can't run in nobody's house and think you're going to get away with it. >> montgomery county detectives and norristown police both working this

investigation. we haven't been able to contact and we haven't seen the homeowner. in norristown, cleve bryan, cbs-3, "eyewitness news". philadelphia police are looking for a suspect who shot five people, killing one of them. this happened overnight in the 4900 block of north front street in felt end on ville. twenty year old man died at the hospital, four others are being treated for their injuries. and, five people rushed to the hospital after a hazmat situation in northampton county. chopper three over the scene around noon at green star recycling, on smith lane in northampton. it is unknown what chemical caused that problem. police in upper darby are looking for this man, in connection with an assault. investigators say he punched a 47 year old man at a wawa on 69th street near patterson avenue yesterday. the suspect accused the victim of hearing after his teenage daughter. if you recognize that man, call upper darby police. police in delaware county, are looking for this man, right here, they say he robbed a wells fargo bank on chester

pike, sharon hill, this past friday. he hands add tell area demand note, and then fled with an undisclosed amount of money. if you recognize him, or know anything about the case, call sharon hill police. and some breaking news, just in to "eyewitness news", right now, chopper three, live over the delaware river, where there is a car in the water. this is along columbus boulevard near market street. we're told two people in the car have been rescued, but their conditions are unknown. police and medic crews are on the scene, again, this is near penn's landing in the delaware river, where crews are trying to rescue people, in a car, we'll continue to keep you updated. local students scientists play a role in monitoring the world's ozone glare "eyewitness news" at the franklin institute owe son garden, the milk weed, snap beans, and cone flowers there, planted by student volunteers, armed with magnifying glasses, and ozone monitors, today they tested those plants for leave damage. which would indicate ozone in the air. the information they collect

towards upper hanover, even toward green lane. i think we're going to see this move across 476, northeast extension, make its way also to the northern part of bucks county. so at a speed of about 25 miles an hour, to the east southeast, be in franconia by 6:47. towamenson 6:58. heavier rain in montgomery and montgomeryville by 7:09. right now, looking at some heavy showers, no thunder or lightning with those storms. that's the good news. so, some heavy rain. atlantic city, warm today, at 85. philadelphia, 84, the average high 87. so little bit below average. wilmington, 84, 82 trenton, reading high 81. about to get a lot cooler around here. temperatures, along the i95 corridor, into the south and east, still in the 80s, to the north and west some rain cooled temperatures, allentown, red being, lancaster, and the poconos, that's just cooler air, at 63 degrees. now, in the wake of this front, this evening, behind those showers, it is going to be noticeably cooler. and even during the day

tomorrow, temperatures running five to 10 degrees below average, with mostly sunny skies, a cool northwesterly breeze, and temperatures just about touching 80 degrees. it feels little bit more fall like, very comfortable. by wednesday, high pressure signings to the south, little bit warmer in the 80s, mid 80s at least by thursday, high pressure builds off the coast, you get flow, south letter i winds, will crank up the heat and swat humidity. not another chance every shower or thunderstorm until late in the week, and toward the weekends. turns to be little quiet. tropical wave, cluster of showers, thunderstorms, within the next four, five days, it could become tropical depression number three. all else quiet in the tropics. to the north, though, in the poconos, tuesday, looks great. mostly sunny, 72, little bit warmer on wednesday, a chance of a scattered storm with milder temperatures thursday, the high 76. so, for tonight, an evening shower, or two, then cooler, breezy, low temperatures in the 60s. waking up to very comfortable

weather tuesday, great day to be outside, even exercise outside. mostly sunny, pleasant, the high temperature, 80 degrees. and that northwesterly winds making it feel terrific. on the exclusive eyewitness weather seven day forecast, and "shorecast", wednesday, 84, thursday, 86, friday, chance of shower or storm, same for saturday, and then by sunday, it stays warm, and it stays dry. with high em tours, both days, sunday, monday, in the mid 80s. shore temperatures looking good, as well. right around 80 degrees. give or take an agree. >> all right, shaping up to be very nice, thanks so much. we want to take you now, again, to our breaking news, chopper three live over penn's landing, for a river rescue there at the delaware river. we're told that a car plunged into the water, this would be near columbus boulevard, and market street. two people in that car have been rescued. but you see a lot of crews there, on the scene, police and medic crews there, trying to get a handle on that

situation. again, car that's gone into the delaware river there, right by penn's landing. we're trying to get a better idea of just how many people might have been in that car. we do know two people have been rescued. we don't know their conditions at this moment. >> this is near the market street bridge. and it is very hard to imagine how a car would wind up, in the water here. but that's exactly what's happened this afternoon. you are looking live from chopper three, at a very active scene, officials there, trying to make sure of course that no one else's life is in danger. the reports into our news room now, the two people have been pulled from the water. we don't know what condition they are in at this point. this, of course, happening very close to the 2010 scene of the duck boat accident where barge ran down a duck boat there putting 35 people into the water. quite a scene on the delaware river. we do understand that they are working on one person there in the back of this boat that you

are looking at right now, that they are performing cpr on that person, again, first reports of this coming in, about 5:55. so little bit more than 25 minutes ago. we don't know how long these two people may have been in the water, when they were stuck inside their car or whether they might have escaped that car, and were in the water on their own, but we downed stand the two people have been pulled from the water here, near the market street bridge, on penn's landing. we're keeping an eye on this breaking news, we'll have the latest for you here on tv and also on line at cbsph
