after dictatorship somewhere. but it wasn't. the allegations are in this indictment. this allegedly happened right here in philadelphia, the six suspects, law officers sworn to uphold the law. this morning they were arrested, and if convicted five of the six could spends the rest of their life behind bars. >> i've been a police officer for more than 40 years. this is one of the worse cases of corruption that i have ever heard. >> police commissioner charles ramsey, along with prosecutors, claim the crimes of the six philadelphia narcotics officers were far worse than any committed by the drug suspects they were supposed to be arresting. >> like your every day drug dealers do. that's what they did. >> federal indictment alleging the officers stole half million in cash and valuables from suspects, beating them, dangling them off highrise balconies, and in at least two cases keeping them in prison for days without any charges being filed. >> these acts alleged in the indictment go beyond

aggregious. >> reporter: last summer fbi divers searched for safe holding $80,000 of allegedly dumped into the river, after the suspects split up the stolen cash. officer litdelo, accused of enjoying beating one man with a gun while participate ago game in which participants would receive points for different types of physical abuse that they could inflict on subjects. >> it is a malignancy that's there. and if you don't cut it out, it will not improve on its own. >> at the suspect's first court appearance, prosecutors told the judge they were going to ask that the six be kept behind bars without bail to await trial. their attorneys claiming their innocence. >> presumed to be innocent. we'll fight the case. we'll fight the allegations. >> many doing up at 6:00 hear exclusively from one of the officers alleged victims. >> it was a nightmare. absolute nightmare. >> now, these officers of course were involved in

bringing cases to court. the d.a. says they barred them from testifying for the past two years; however, there are still many convictions they were involved in, and many if not all of those convictions potentially could be overturned. finally, sources tell cbs-3, this investigation is far from over and that additional charges against additional officers may well be coming. coming up at 6:00 you'll hear from the alleged victims. live at the us courthouse, walt hunter, cbs-3, "eyewitness news". walt, thank you. three men behind bars tonight accused of ripping off more than $181,000 from ceasar's atlantic city. late this afternoon police announce the r's of isiah plumber, duane plumber and aaron evans, alleged robbery happened july 21st. police say that money was taken at gunpoint. all three men now face weapons, robbery, assault charges. and bail is set at $200,000. in los angeles, at this hour, the clean up underway near the site of this enormous water main break from last

night. danielle nottingham tells us millions of gallons of water spewed onto sunset boulevard, and the campus of ucla. leaving behind big damage, and a huge sinkhole. >> the ruptured water main line exposed in the middle of sunset boulevard near ucla, workers say they have a complicated yet delicate operation ahead of them. >> we've got 1921 pipe riveted to feed into a 1956 pipe. what we call a y connection. and it turns out that the pipe ripped open, right at the y connection. >> reporter: crews scrambling to drain the pipe and securing to prevent other breaks before they can begin repairs. the 93 year old walter main typically transports 75,000 gallons of water a minute, from the upper stone canyon reservoir, about 6 miles north of ucla. the break spewed eight to 10 million gallons of water in the three and a half hours it took crews to shut off the pipe on tuesday. at a time when california

suffering its worse drought in decades. >> that is 2% of the amount of water the city in total uses in a day. >> most of the campus is now dry. but water poured into parking garage stairwells like this one which is still under more than a foot of water. the deluge submerged or damaged more than 700 cars in ucla's underground garages, including -- >> i tried to rescue, tried to be superman, but it was way too much. way too much water. >> reporter: ucla administrators say six facilities were damaged including the university sports pavilion and field. danielle nottingham for cbs-3 "eyewitness news". well, funeral services are set for tonight for the woman who was killed last week at darby medical center. theresa hunt was shot during a appointment as she worked as case worker, at mercy fitzgerald hospital. police say richard plotts pulled the trigger and also shot his doctor. the doctor fired back, and

wounded plotts. hunt's funeral is at 8:00 tonight at the funeral home of john stretch in havertown. caught on camera, a woman attacked and robbed, while getting off atrial on baltimore avenue. take a look, the argument starts as the woman walks through the door and the man behind her lashes out, outside, a man appears to hit her, then take her headphones. that woman ultimately needed stitches for her lip. police say this man is about 20 years old, 5-foot 11. meanwhile, detectives are looking for a man who they say broke into a cafe and carol park july 21st. you can see him here in the surround ill ends video taking a crowbar. once inside, police say the man loaded up pillow case with juice, wine, and a tv. he was last seen on south 52nd street. he's described as having a thin beard and large tatoo on his right forearm. well, now the latest on the crisis in the middle eels,

break in the fighting today, but did not stop the palestinian death toll from reportedly climbing, at least 55 israelis have also been killed in this month's conflict. cbs news correspondent alphonso van marsh with the latest now from the gaza border. >> in war ravaged gaza today, death came as quickly before a temporary cease-fire, that is did during one. palestinians say at least 15 people were killed, and more than 150 injured, in a israeli air strike on a crowded shopping area. >> earlier, there were more deaths in israeli tank attack on a school that was being used as an un shelter. >> children killed in their sleep. this is an a front to all of us, source of universal shame. >> israel said it targeted the school after hamas fired mortars near the building. said it has found hamas rockets stashed inside several gaza schools. >> this terrorist organization is exploiting, exploiting the

look at our cool down, kathy? >> what a beautiful day indeed. started off on very cool night, most locations within couple of degrees of record lows. only rebounded nicely, with plenty of sunshine across the area. take a look at some of the morning numbers. you felt the chill if you walked out the door early. mount pocono, 45, allentown, 51, just 1 degrees shy of the record of 50. atlantic city, 53, cape may, wilmington, 57, philadelphia, 62 degrees. we have rebounded into the 70s, and 80s today. philadelphia so far 80. right now at 78, the same in trenton, 76 in millville, 80 degrees right now in atlantic city, at the airport. you can see the west state college 70, buffalo, new york in the 60s, cool tonight, but not quite as cool. now this evening, temperatures will be cooling down, through the 70s, by 9:00, clear, 74, 11:00 p.m., few clouds, 70 degrees. we have some showers coming our way, coming up, we'll talk more about those, and also, a

"eyewitness news" reporter noel mcclaren live for us on the board walk with more on the preparations there, noel? >> reporter: chris, jessica, this is the busiest we've seen this boardwalk in weeks, actually, and as crews set the stage here for tomorrow's concert, atlantic city is setting the stage for its future. the stage is set. the beaches, packed. as tens of thousands of people have already flocked to atlantic city, in preparation for thursday's free blake shelton concert. mayor don guardian says this is his vision for the future at the boardwalk. >> we are really reprogramming, time to expand with more than just gaming.

>> the hope is atlantic city will also be setting itself up for re invention, the mayor says he wants the draw for the city to be for its beaches and its boards walk, rather than its casinos, which are slowly spreading across the country. >> atlantic city is still a jersey shore town. so we're the urban town, but we're still jersey shore. so all of the wonderful activities you get being on the ocean is right here for people to enjoy. >> reporter: visitors we spoke with are already catching on. >> you manage to find a few that haven't spent a single sent just getting here. >> no, no i don't go to the casino. >> why not? >> because i don't gamble. >> we have kids with us, yes, we have the youngest, 17, the oldest 89. there is ten of us. so we have some that will not be gambling. >> now we're told 60,000 people already have tickets to be on the beach here tomorrow for the concert. if not, the mayor says there will be plenty of room right here on the board walk, and if you're lucky enough, and you have boat, i'm told, you can even hear the music from the

>> new campaign underway to warn trespass tears stay off railroad tracks after couple women cheated death walking on railroad bridge in indianna. it is caught on tape. take a look at these women. they try to run away from this oncoming train. now, when they realized they really have no place to go, they laid down, and the 100 car train passed right over them. railroad officials called indianna police, who tracked the duo down, and they have been charged with trespassing. small cars, special electric and hybrid cars, more popular than ever. but the question is are they safe? >> insurance industry financed research group recently put small cars through new crash tests, tougher crash tests, and as "3 on your side" jim donovan found out, the results

were mixed. >> the mini cooper country man was the only small car to receive a good rating in crash tests by the insurance institute for highway safety. >> the occupant was well restrained, side curtain airbags, frontal, seatbelt, all worked great together. >> institute performed its new err small overlap test on 12 small cars. the 40-mile per hour crash simulates what happens when the front corner of the car collides with another vehicle, or tree. it is the first time the institute performed this particular test on electric and hybrid vehicles. the ford c max hybrid, and electric chevy volt, received acceptable ratings. the volt's electric competitor, the nissan lease, rated poor. as did the fiat 500l, the nissan juke, and mazda five. the insurance institute says passenger spaces in those vehicles came apart in the crash test. >> now, the insurance institute for highway safety as crash tested 32 small cars

with cumulus clouds puffing up, those fair weather clouds, in center city temperatures have warmed to up about 80 degrees, so far. that's our high for the day which is still good deal below average for this time of year. our live neighborhood network takes us to the beach patrol headquarters, in margate. the beach is still little bit crowded. a great afternoon, to just hang out with deep blue sky, and low humidity, something we haven't had all that much of especially during the month of july, which has been more on the weather side. temperatures around the region, are on the mild side. we have some clouds rolling our way late tonight, and line of showers, weak disturbance moving eastward, and this may make it into the poconos, but we do not expect it to make it any closer than that. right now in the city, it is 78, same in trenton, millville, atlantic city right now 80 at the airport, ocean water temperature has warm up to 70 degrees. taking a closer look, northeast philadelphia, mt. holly, new jersey, 79, quakertown, 75, pottstown, and doylestown, checking in in the mid 60s.

or i should say 70s. thursday, we're going to watch this front approach from the northwest, just a chance of a late afternoon scattered shower, temperatures will be comfortable in the 80s. by friday, things really begin to change. we have this approaching front, coming from the west, another one, pushing toward the shore. we kind of get caught inbetween in the weekend. temperatures in the 80s for friday, afternoon storm, but by saturday these two converge, and we have are looking at showers, and ocean influence, with some cooler air moving in, and temperatures saturday, only in the 70s. now,. >> good grip, here's the way it looks like 5:00 p.m., 6:00 p.m. this evening, then by thursday few spotty showers possible in the morning, more likely in the afternoon. by friday, these fronts get little bit closer, and really feeling the impact by saturday. that's when i think we'll seeing a loft moisture, funneling right up the eastern seaboard, that will linger into sunday, as well.

says it targeted the school after hamas fired mortars near the building. big clean up underway in los angeles, massive water main break, flooded part of sunset boulevard in the ucla campus last night. an estimated 8 million gallons spewed from 93 year old ruptured water main. we continue to follow breaking news at this hour. there has been a shooting in strawberry mansion involving a philadelphia police officer. >> we go now line to reporter natasha brown at the scene. >> reporter: we can tell you here behind us still an active investigation under folding here in the 3200 block of page street strawberry mansion. learned that a police officer did have to apparently discharge his weapon, apparently shooting a man in the abdomen, after the suspect allegedly points dollars weapon at the officer. was taken to temple university hospital. also now learning, that this scene may very well be connected to another shooting, just a block away here, along paid street, man was shot in

the face. again, one of the sergeants on the scene telling us these scenes are certainly connected. chopper three hovering above the scene as you can see many police officers swarming this area, trying to get to the bottom of exactly what happened and how these two scenes may indeed be connected. we're following all of the latest developments here in strawberry mansion. we'll bring you the latest as we get more details. reporting live, natasha brown, cbs-3 "eyewitness news". despite the ebola outbreak spreading in africa, announced today no plans to change or cancel upcoming summit with 40 african leaders who were set to meet with the president in washington next week. heard reporter stephanie stahl has update on the outbreak that's killed 670 people. >> the center for disease control and prevention sent health alert to us doctors this week about the ebola outbreak in africa, but maintains the risk of the deadly virus spread to go this country is low. >> it is possible that somebody could go over there

for example to help in medical care, become infected, and then come to the united states ac become sick here. fortunately our doctors in emergencies rooms, infectious disease doctors, public health officials cents are ready for that. >> ebola can look like other illnesses, symptoms are fever, vomiting, diarrhea, a some can later bleed internally, from their eyes or mouth. ebola spread through close contact with bodily fluids. health experts say patients only contagious once they have the symptoms. >> if i were sitting on a plane next to someone who was in the inning ooh because period, i would not be very much worried about myself. >> soar's husband from the united states was on his way home from liberia, when he died from ebola. >> we ought to be concerned about that, if we're not, we're kidding ourself f we think that it can't come to the u.s., and that is another fear of mine.

>> two american health work remembers hospitalized with ebola in liberian today two north carolina missionary groups ordered evacuations of non-personnel from liberia. no treatment for ebola. this current outbreak has death rate around 60%. live in the sat center, stephanie stahl, cbs-3, "eyewitness news". pretty staggering numbers, there stephanie, thank you very much. well, new york city's mayor is under fire tonight, after he signed off on a new apartment building, that has a separate entrance for low income residents. the three 3-story building on manhattan's west side will have a mix of luxury, and low to middle income residents. critics have dubbed the separate entrance the poor door. the developer that far building says he was just following zoning laws to help create more affordable housing. other city officials say that they'll look to close the poor door loophole. governor chris christie is urging new jersey law makers to amend the state

constitution, and reform the bail system. today in trenton, governor announced legislature will convene for special session on that issue tomorrow. proposed changes would give judges discretion to keep those considered dangerous behind bars and to release minor offenders even if they can't afford bail. >> how can we continue to support a system that fails our poor, that fails those who pose no risk to our communities, fails our citizens because we're allowing dangerous people to walk free because they can afford to? >> the changes would not be fully in place until 2017. that is if they're adopted. philadelphia we know is the city of neighborhoods. and city counsel is hoping to tap into information about those neighborhoods to make better choices. "eyewitness news" at the community college of philadelphia today, where city council announced in a it calls a community sustainability initiative.

police involved shooting, suspect now in custody after case that came to ends near st. paul, about three hours after an officer was shot. now, that officer was reportedly shot during what was a routine traffic stop. an eyewitness says that the officer suffered a severe head injury, the officer's condition is not known at this time. another royal photo bomb. a guitar that looks a lot like a dog, and growing pains, it is all trending today. we'll start first with the photo bomb. i think you'll recognize that person right there. last week the queen got into the act. this week, prince harry crash ago picture at the commonwealth games there. new zealand official took a group photo and later when he checked it out he discovered the red head right there in the back. now, to something you don't see every day. right? a woman, playing a dog like a

temperature quite cool at 71 degrees, winds out of the south-southeast at just 8 miles an hour. storm scan3, we have line of some showers and few thunderstorms making their way through central pennsylvania, these are going to weaken as they move eastward. we may see a scattered shower making it to the poconos, but other than that, these are expected to die out. associated with few weak disturbances moving eastward. right now in philadelphia, 78 the same in trenton, 80 in atlantic city, 70 in the poconos, after morning low of only 45 degrees. those ocean water temperatures warming up, as well. up to 70. down the shore, temperatures, the same as they're inland, ocean sit, 78, stone harbor, 76, the same in cape may, rehoboth beach, delaware, up to 756789 we are going to watch as we see increasing chance of few showers, by the end of the week. thursday, just a chance of afternoon shower, with high temperature every 80 degrees, we will watch the front continue to approach from the west, northwest, on friday. giving better chance of afternoon thunderstorm. then we have another player,

this frontal boundery that will begin to push back toward the coast providing an increased chance of some showers, some clouds, and some cool weather, by saturday, with high temperatures only around 70, 78 degrees. now, this is a set up. very strong area of high pressure that's off shore. we have that approaching front, coming from the great lakes. it will -- what will happen there is high will push that front back toward the coast, while this front is pushing eastward, we get caught right in the middle. all of this moisture, including some tropical moisture, just gets pulled up the eastern seaboard. so the i-95 corridor will be seeing good deal of rain. so for tonight, partly cloudy, mild, low temperature of 65. during the day thursday, look for mix of clouds and sun. and isolated afternoon shower perhaps, high temperature 84. down the shore, pleasant day, of course, for your thursday, with a high of 82 degrees. and then, by friday, chance of a shower here or there. but basically partly sunny for the most part, the high temperature 81 degrees.

week, this called a haboob, large dust storm in the phoenix area. look how big this dust storm is, 3,000 feet high, it advances and swallows the entire city of phoenix. imagine driving down the street and seeing this huge wall of dust headed your way and completely obscuring visibility out there? crazy stuff from phoenix. now, take a look at this video. this couple was vacationing in mexico. and they decided to take one last little selfie video here with their go pro camera. right as a thunderstorm was coming, told to get off the beach. they didn't. look at that, almost got struck by lightening, they put it in slow motion here for you. they pose for the selfie, wipes off the screen, right behind them, bamm, a huge bolt of lightning hits that tree, knocks them off their feet, definately a good remind their if they say to get off the beach you just want to get off the beach. we saw that earlier this week of course in vince beach, california. finally, take a look at this video, couple vacationing in new finland, out on boat checking out these icebergs

showers and a rainy weekend on tap. we'll explain what is going to happen coming up and have full details in the seven day, "eyewitness news" at 6:00 starts now. breaking right now at 6:00. police investigate a shooting as a suspect is shot by a philadelphia police officer. it is all unfolding in the 3200 block of page street. that's in the strawberry mansion section of the city. our natasha brown is on the scene with breaking details. natasha, you just talked to police? >> reporter: we d we are learning a lot more information as to what transpired here earlier this afternoon. take a look here behind me. still very active scene playing out as investigators are combing this area. we've now learned that a police officer did shoot a suspect in the abdomen, and another suspect was taken into custody here at this scene. take a look at some video from earlier that we were able to get. all of this spawned by shooting in the 3,000 block of

page street shortly before this incident took place. a man was shot four times at that location, police got information that the suspects involved in that shooting were holdup in a house here in the 3200 block of page street. let's list never to inspector steven cross as he tells us what happened after that. >> inspector: male exited the property with a handgun his hands, pointed the gun at police. uniform officer at that time discharged his weapon, striking the defendant in the mid section. >> reporter: well that suspect was taken to temple university hospital, we're told he's in serious condition, again, with gunshot wounds to the abdomen. another suspect was also taken into custody, and the other victim, who was shot, just two blocks away in the 3,000 block of page street, apparently in serious condition, as well, shot four times, these two suspects, again, linked to that shooting by police. of course, internal affairs will now take over this investigation, as
