h, way to hang in there. he really made hard work of that. peter: i know bogey is never a good thing but in that case it was the best that could have happened to him. he was looking at double or worse from where he drove it. ian: he sure was. a friendly squirrel there. and this is in the same pairing. this for par and i mentioned it earlier. adam scott has to stay in the top five. if rory does go on to win, adam has to stay in the top five to remain number one in the world. i'm sure he's not thinking of that as he's playing. he's just trying to make birdies. that will be a couple of bogeys for the two australians at 14. jim: there's one thing about the world golf rankings.

they're come piled over several years and that's one think that at times i think they ought to adjust. nothing against adam. he's played really well this year. a lot of high finishes, including the win at colonial but does anyone have a doubt has to -- as to who the number one player in the world is right now? that could be official at the end of the day. mcilroy, one shot better than sergio. still have a long way to go here at firestone country club and the south course. in this world golf championship event. you might be wondering how come there are still four or five holes to go? there was a rain delay this morning after the fourth round had started. now we're in 17 minutes later. they resumed play. jim nantz, nick faldo and the whole cbs golf team back here in akron. we've had this day that just seems like every hour something's happening.

mickelson shoots 62. mcilroy overtakes garcia. sergio pulls back even. earlier today tiger withdrawing from the tournament, reaggravating his back that was operated on back in march. again, not to get past this very important tournament but next week we have the pga championship and the last major year and maybe one more time we'll see rory and sergio battling again like they did at liverpool two ekes -- weeks ago, as they are here. rickie fowler was the one missing part of that leaked from last week. he shot 67 today and tied for ninth. he's finished. nick: absolutely, all these guys are playing really well. it's the end of the season, last major and you can really tell the guys who are on form. charl schwartzel had a really good day today and cabrera won a cup of weeks ago. people like that. so anybody who can play that style of golf course.

jim: 14. ian: sergio just tapping in. he's nowhere near rory's line. david: yeah, when you shoot 61, it's hard to find something that wasn't quite right so where did t all start to go wrong? peter: well, they found that. gary: amazing. look how high that has. that's the tour official and we're going to take a line of sight relief. go along that line as far back as you want. david: i would have played that. gary: yeah. there's a lot of room. the golf course is over here to the left. when they redid that golf course where he's standing there were all trees and bushes and evil things. ian: you should have seen it before the dutch elm disease. rory mcilroy for birdie. david: i didn't see that. i

thought that was a straight putt. ian: it's been a tough green to read all week. one of the top four toughest. adam scott at 15. jim: he has fallen back at the moment. peter: had no option but to go high. got a little bit too much of the ball. jim: he's in a four-way tie for fifth. anything below fifth and a mcilroy win would make it official, rory back to number one. 14. ian: firm and straight. beautiful. worked the last couple of weeks on just trying to release the putter head that little bit more and felt leading into the open that he was leading a little bit too much with the left hand and i know he and dave stockton and dave jr. worked on that. for the last three weeks it's looked pretty good, i know that.

patrick reed, 65. tied for fifth. he has, because johnson was expunged from the ryder cup standings, so that puts reed as the last guy in the u.s. list coming into this week. he's going to make up a lot of points here. so the 15th hole, when you would play this one, what would you think standing on that tee? nick: what would i think? it's still a tough hole. we were 4-irons and 3-irons back in the laughable era. david: well, this is 5. a little into the breeze. 213. nick: we were also on the tee in front. we were one tee up. 187, 3-iron. leaning. jim: and getting a piece of it.

ian: sergio also with five. can catch pfeifer -- of course, he hasn't done it at any point today. the one birdie at the ninth. nick: trying to stay calm and keep the right intensity. this is the time to let it all go now. let the bull loose and just go for everything. pretty much it's a two-horserace now.

yards long. this is keegan bradley's fourth shot. in the bushes. three to there. over the pond. oh! oh, would that been a heck of a five. no, a four. that would have been a four. play it again. maybe we go into restaurant replay. it hit real low on that flagstick. he was probably lucky it didn't bounce back in the water. way to go for it, though. he's not given up. oh, that's not good. david: there are only two ways to get this close and neither of them are possible. nick: this is the classic case. one shot could win you the tournament and one shot could cost you it and that might have been the shot. david: that's the only shot really. nick: yeah. david: you have to make sure you get it on the green.

nick: absolutely, you have to chop it so rory has now an opportunity to get a cushion. jim: the shadows getting a ittle longer for sergio. he'll try to hole a long one for a par but this has the makings of an opportunity to go into the pga so confident. nick: he's good at chasing. unfortunately with the lead, the record is not good. we've analyzed the swing, shown thank you big change of direction of the plane. i've been talking about that for 10 years now and i personally think that's what held him back. he's a great ball striker but under pressure gets a little steam and that one he zprapped it went left and occasionally

he'll get even steeper and he'll block one to the right. whereas rory is putting the club on a beautiful plane. jim: david, what do you see here? david: a little right to left and downhill at the end. he's got to be kind careful with it. kind of bobbled and -- not sure that he struck that one. nick: yeah. jim: that's going to play well for sergio's mindset that he could actually get out of here without dropping a shot to rory. these two are paired together in the 2012 masters. sergio, that point where he hit his all-time low. they both played poorly but sergio was so down on himself back at augusta after the saturday round, 2012. when he made some comments, i'm not good enough. in the 13 years i've come to the

conclusion that i need to play for second or third place. nick: i think he probably knew and was hoping for a bear hug back, of course you can do it, sergio. yeah, he knocked himself about a bit negatively and decided to take a full six months off and had a bit of fun. went off and played football with the lads, that sort of thing to try and clear the air. it worblinged. now here we are a couple of years later, as we were saying. he's got a new girlfriend, happy there. the game's pretty darn good. what about finishing it off? that's the hardest thing and everybody in the world is going to have a hard time finishing off with this young man if he's on the top of the leaderboard. jim: if he's breathing down your neck like he was at the start of the day. he was able to gain the lead by the third hole, only to see sergio pull back even after

nine. nick: tiger was arguably, whatever you want to put it, possibly two to three rungs ahead of the rest. rory looks like he's one rung ahead on my ladder scale, as i would put it. if he understand wins here and again -- if he wins here and again next week -- jim: that's some second putt. so the margin is going to be at least two. no, he wants to win this week and then go back and win again next. three straight wins? against all the best players in the world? nick: that's what i'm saying. but it's the style of it and everybody is going to know -- a bit like tiger -- if he is there on the leaderboard and climbing to the tom. jim: you're going to feel that presence. nick: you're going to feel that presence and good luck getting past him.

with two to play. you have the pivotal hole, gary. gary: oh, excited. you know, nick, honestly, this hole can play 6 88. i wish they would put it on the front tee today, move the pin back and let these guys take a shot at this on the last day. nick: i agree. gary: it's a par 3. two shots, lay it up short of the pond and hit it on the green. scott way back here. peter: 225 back,goer. gary: wow. in trouble off the tee. peter: kind of grabbed it up in the rough and barely -- i don't know, did that get over and stay up? gary: no, i think it came back down. you heard the gasp by the audience there, the gallery. that plunged. the ripple tells the sad story.

after this morning and how bad it was, this was beautiful right now. nick: the breeze just got up on him. it went straight left. gary: it just about hit that big blue thing, camera, i don't know what that has. nick: the bruise ruffled his thousandsers. i know that sounds stupid but that would have changed it for a split second. peter: 106 for leishman and his third. gary: he's got to goat 15. the math is hard. he's at 11. whoa. all right, that's a good look straight up the hill. can he get to 12? that would only be three back with two to go. i don't know. right now, rory, two-shot lead. 15 under.

jim: 60's minutes leads off the lineup tonight. all new "big brother," with julie chen. poppy montgomery with an all new "unforgettable" then an all new "reckless" tonight, america's number one network. back out to the 16th. gary: jimmy, that's a good lineup right there. jim: you're going to be staying up and watching it, i'm sure. gary: i might. i might cancel my flight. we took our direct line from where it entered. he's losing his fifth place position real quick here the last couple of holes. hydraulics on that one. nice shot.

adam has a wry little grin. i don't know what for. oh, here we go. here we go. those are both -- in the top of that treatment on the left, mcilroy, obviously. the one we're concerned about -- oh, there it is, we got it. david: i just got dizzy and fell over watching that. this is all right. he's underneath this little ash tree but it's very, very shallow roots and they're kind of digging up and i don't know if he's going to make contact with one or not but he's not going to be able to take over the bunker. gary: what kind of tretion are those from front of him? dr. oz: in front of him are ficus. gary: that's a ficus over there with the white trunk?

david: yeah. he's not going to be able to get this past the bunker. he's going to have an adam scott-like third shot if he can get this back in the fairway, which shouldn't really be a problem. gary: two shots back. what you don't want to do is pull it and try to get that little -- too much of an aggressive line. then you'll be on the side of the hill and have nothing. came out pretty nice, david, huh? the other guys like it. calling his name. david: back on the fairway. took a friendly bounce out of the crowd but that's in reasonable shape. gary: yeah, he likes it. if sergio likes it, by gosh, i like it.

david: rory has hit it 340 yards down here. gary: that's his average right now. 334 average. david, wouldn't you like to see this front tee and have these guys give it a go? would you like that? david: straight over the middle of the bunker. that should be in perfect shape. actually lost his right foot there on the start of the downswing. a little bit of a slip. gary: i hope he finds it. ok, straight uphill this is nice for a birdie. he'd be at 12, three shots back. still a chance. yes, it did. beautiful. boy, he's plugging right along, isn't hi he? three under par for the day. that's 12 when you add them all up for all four days. let's go to red shoes here at
