like it. david: rory has hit it 340 yards down here. gary: that's his average right now. 334 average. david, wouldn't you like to see this front tee and have these guys give it a go? would you like that? david: straight over the middle of the bunker. that should be in perfect shape. actually lost his right foot there on the start of the downswing. a little bit of a slip. gary: i hope he finds it. ok, straight uphill this is nice for a birdie. he'd be at 12, three shots back. still a chance. yes, it did. beautiful. boy, he's plugging right along, isn't hi he? three under par for the day. that's 12 when you add them all up for all four days. let's go to red shoes here at 17.
6:31 pm
ian: they're his favorite shoes now. wears them every week. just let that leak off to the right just off the edge of the green. but with lift, clean, and place, he'll be able to give it a wipe. to adam scott. gary: and a good putt but the bad news is that's his third bogey in a row. three squares and he's not really happy with that. we're proud to have the metlife blimp, snoopy 2 providing a unique perspective from 1,500 feet, way up in the air. the premier client group invites to you see their unique perspective.
6:32 pm
jim: with adam scott struggling to the finish line, tide for eighth and with rory leading, we talked about this shift in power . rory would go back to number one. it would be the fifth time he has moved into that position. he was on and off during the 2012 season and he last held -- held the number one ranking until mid march 2013. you know, gary, you and peter kostis were technical consultants for tin cup and back in 1995 when kevin costner came out as your guests preparing for his role as roy mcill voy back in 1995. and then we have rory mcilroy from hollywood. gary: that's a big stretch, jim. but i like it.
6:33 pm
jim: hollywood, northern ireland writing his own scrim. gary: is trying to tag along. jim: you've had a front-row seat on both occasions. nick: i just hope he doesn't take 13 at the last. gary: i think it was 12. jim: my head will be on the desk again if that's the case. nick: j.p. won't be here for one of them. jim: how do i hit this shot for faldo up in the booth. gary: david? david: 182 yards. gary: there are a bunch of trees. has he got to go around or over them? david: they're just an obstruction in his eyeline and they're not really a problem at all. gary: this is not a real good angle to go out hunting for the pin. this is going to be long left, 30 feet. see if he can not -- knock one
6:34 pm
in. david: 7-iron. gary: he's kind of given himself a chance. muttering. there you go. david: that's a suburb shot. gary: about 25 feet just left of the flag. downhill. ok. now our leader, from -- david: 125 yards and he's got to be careful here of the uber spinnage. gary: i'm going to toss this a little long and put some backpedal on this and see if we can get it semiclose. thin rather than fat would work here. that looked precise. david: that was neither. gary: he's going to try to go back. and it whimpered. it looked like it had its running shoes on and didn't do anything. 17. ian: keegan bradley need to

the northern group. marc leishman and adam scott. this was adam. peter: this was a 9-iron from 1 3 yards. one of the better shots he's hit on the second nine. ian: coils back and fully uncoils on the way through. that's his key. works on the nice, smooth rhythm. perfect. gary: lovely scene, isn't it? look at the pond. not a wrinkle. david, i'm not going to have you read this because everyone has missed this putt to the right. david: really? gary: watch this. they think it's going to really come down. actually, this is a pretty good line. yeah, that was a great line. david: you know, every now and then there's someone in the game
6:38 pm
who comes along that just makes it look more beautiful than it has done in the past. there was sam snead and ben hoagen and tom weiskopf and ballesteros. tiger woods. rory mcilroy is one of those players. gary: especially with his driver. that driver swing is just majestic. he sticks it literally -- you could sculpt him because his body is in the same position every time. 20 feet and boy, he needs it. well, one guy got what he wanted, five. the other guy did not get what he need and would that was a four. two back. two to go. pretty simple math.
6:39 pm
ian: the final group make their way to the tee. huge putt for marc leishman. this to get to 13 and tie second -- second and really to have any chance at the win. he's looked good all day, peter, hasn't he? he's had a lot of birdies, just a couple of dropped shots here and there. peter: just a couple of what i would call quick transition swings that cost him dearly. back on the sixth hole with driver. other than that he's played really quite clean golf. ian: very nice. we go to 18. jim: keegan, who started the day tied for fourth. but let's go to 17 first.
6:40 pm
ian: attacking with the driver, like he's done all week. it's worked out ok. that's about 80 yards to the hole. nick: keegan into the traditional hole location, back left corner. you have to lean to get it around that into that corner. uh-oh. jim: that's that same bunker he was in when he won two years ago. that up and down. couldn't go directly at it. had a 15-foot saving putt. i've never seen anyone, anyone, attack 17 off the tee like rory has this week. ian: and it's been the same every day.
6:41 pm
nick: attacked number one. skinniest fairway. number 11 is skinny as well. number three. ian: might not be too bad. it's not quite into the trees. nick: and 14 as well. those are all the skinniest fairways. he couldn't care less. he's hit driver and hit the fairway probably 70% of the time. ian: this is big for adam. if he can finish birdie-birdie he can still remain number one. well, he must make two at the last. you would think. he has to finish inside top five to keep that ranking or that man right there, rory mcilroy, striding up the 17th will become number one again. uh-huh. (vo) there's good more... honey, look at all these smart rewards points verizon just gave me. ooh, you got a buddy. i'm like a statue.
6:42 pm
i just signed up and, boom, all these points. ...and there's not-so-good more. you're a big guy... ...oh no. get the good more with verizon smart rewards and rack up points to use towards the things you really want. get the lg g3 for $199.99. it's chaos out there.o your marks. go! but the m-class sees in your blind spot, pulls you back into your lane, even brakes all by itself. it's almost like it couldn't crash... even if it tried. the 2014 m-class. jim: thursday through sunday this is major.
6:43 pm
the season's final major. the pga championship returns to valhalla. had two pga's there. they both want to playoffs. mark brooks over kenny perry. tiger over bob may. we look forward to presenting it to you next week with our friends from turner, t information t. 1:00 start on thursday and friday. saturday and sunday, cbs at 2:00 and on the range with the 24-hour home of cbs sports network. in the morning starting on thursday, 10:30 eastern time and then at night, the clubhouse report from hall valet in louisville. at 18. nick: keegan might hole this that is his intention. jim: we've seen him grind out some shots.
6:44 pm
ick: very nicely done. jim: marc leishman is on the tee. nick: 26-yard wide fairway but this turns on the angle thinner than that. peter: setting up down the left and cutting it back toward the left side of the fairway. nick: a ribbon of green. peter: this is one of those holes where you have to be able to eliminate one side or the other. otherwise you got nothing. nick: absolutely. you can't aim down the middle and hope for the best. david: well, you have half of nothing. nick: yeah. jim: to 17. ian: rory has 84 yards left for his second. there he stands. and that's the ball of sergio garcia, just in the left rough. david: 320 yards in.
6:45 pm
this is a steep hill. ian: it is. it's amazing how far it is up there. just incredible. sergio looks like he has no tree trouble. david: no. and the rough is trampled down in the direction of the green so it's just difficult to know if you're going to get any spin or not with this particular shot. more than likely not but every now and then you'll get one that will jerk on you. ian: he's two back. rory more than likely will hit so inside of 10 or 12 feet, he has to make birdie here. the flag is in the back section, straight over the top of the bunker. not there had. -- interested.
6:46 pm
good shot. 10 feet for birdie for garcia. he's struck the ball nicely all week. just hasn't been able to convert the birdies the last 27 holes. just one birdie, two bogeys for sergio today. started the day three behind rory. in front. now three david: just a hands and arm shot. bigger bounce than that. ian: maybe a little conservative. didn't want to fire it over the back and make bogey. sergio started at 13. rory was three behind that at 11. four under today.
6:47 pm
two ahead. jim: keegan closes with a par. a round of 69. 16th in the ryder cup standings. nick: yeah, that's a big help. he's dying to get to the ryder cup. jim: really weighed heavily on his mind here. nick: absolutely. jim: justin rose for par to match him. there they go. identical scores today. and they begin the round and end it in the same position, tied fourth. we'll just, again, recap. a lot of you joining us late. rain they earlier in the morning and the biggest story that happened today before we got the

leaders off was tiger woods having to withdraw after straining his back right there when he jumped into the bunker, that awkward shot he tried to execute at the par 50 second hole. he played the rest of that front nine hitting some shots that we've never seen tiger miss the mark at such a wide margeen and finally after the ninth hole after his tee shot, he grimaced in pain. he ended up heading off the course, withdrawing and heading home. we understand he's already back home in florida right now and reports are out there that he is going to be getting an evaluation from his doctors immediately. the status for the upcoming pga championship very much in doubt. we shall show deny see. 1, ian?
6:49 pm
ian: he has 25 feet up the hill. a little left-to-right slider. and we all wish tiger all the very best. excellent effort, rory. david: just getting it to the hole gives you an indication of what kind of a player he is. ian: exactly. thank you hill when so many before him have been coming up short. but he's in such a rhythm and easy flowing feeling right now, the young man. everything is firing on all 12 cylinders. nick: i hope sergio can make this because boy, are we going to have a dramatic 18th. peter: this to get within one. there's the grip that's served him so well the last three
6:50 pm
seasons. it was a good effort. most have missed throw there. hard to keep it up high. his demeanor has been exceptional, though. i was reading recently where he said that was something he wanted to work on, his attitude and testimony. wants to be more like steve stricker. dam scott, guys like that. he's like a young puppy dog. bouncing around the course. it's a wonder his tongue isn't headache -- hanging out. to 18. jim: leishman is just one shot out of second. peter: 1 4-yard 9-iron na that he feeds to hook and didn't. nick: oh. well, it's an easy bunker eshot there. as long as he has a decent lie.
6:51 pm
it gives you some idea for rory and these boy is that left rough is not good. jim: now adam. peter: only got 1 5. set up for a cut and kind of push cut it. nick: gave up on the follow-through. really has had a loten back nine for a man of his standards and uess what, no problem. there's a big oak about 400 yards down in the right hazard. that's actually green side. i bet he's aiming at that one. jim: he woulding right. right side of the fairway. kicked right back in.
6:52 pm
nick: look at that, the only spot with a clear view. phenomenal. jim: the last player to win back-to-back starts between -- before the pga. tiger and the burek open. we loved our years out there,er a war we can hills. and here in 2009. he didn't win the pga. that's when ya yang was able to hold him off. and sergio >> will have to make three and ope for rory to make five. that's good. from his body language. he'll have to hook one around the treatment jim: leishman now playing his

then meet here in akron. rory, of course, won it there. sergio was tied second and leishman was fifth. 1-2-5. 1-2-3 here. phil today moving up to 15th with his 62. nick: amazingly good buddies, walking down the last hole with the tournament on the line. jim: leishman for 67. he's three shot clear so no stress over that one. and he played beautifully. had to take an unplayable at the sixth and managed to hang in there and make a five. he hid some wonderful approaches. earlier it was adam scott. we're -- bringing a close to his

number one ranking. ed -- assumed in may and he wanted to play as number one and took on the challenge of justen dufner at the county plaza invitational. and won in a playoff. that first week he was number one. i think he's going to be a factor next week. as much as we try to draw conclusion, i still think sergio is going to be right there next week as he -- his game -- although he didn't have it today. sergio, his body of work for the season has been very strong. he's 34 years old. we say will he ever twhain

elusive first major? i think next week will be as good a chance as he's had since maybe the open championship. mickelson was 33 when he went first. -- won. serge sow 34. -- dig t have to deep deep and notice what happened toot -- today. a little pull at 15. a different feel in the hands when you're putting. jim: i thought that little pull at the first was telling. nick: even last night we came t and had three balls at 16, 1, 18. there are only two other players in about the top 20. adam scott and i think henrik

stenson shot it unover. that's about it. of the top 25 areas -- players, one over to lead it is not good. david: you can see the giant guards the edge of the tee. he has 8-iron. nick: good shot. jim: very good shot. nick: once again, 328 in a perfect position. jim: couldn't have a better angle. 's a slender portion of this green. david: there are preceasely eight years of green you can look at to have a lock at the flagstick. and this is a sand wedge from 142 yards. nick: a two tree -- degree or something. he's just going to bomb it, get

era in the game, and many are going to write about that this week. he runs into rory mcilroy. nick: runs into the star of the next years. he's battled tiger it's all right 15 years and now he's got another youngster who's fully charged up. fully loaded with everything. talent, strength, desires. so no wonder sergio -- when he crouches down, it's going to hurt. jim: a lot of you just tuning in here at the top of the hour.
