anne-marie green. rushing waters and mudslides kill add driver who was swept into a creek. thunderstorms powered san bernardino county yesterday. flash floods caused mudslides and debris cut off access to many roads. more than 2,000 people are stranded including a group of 500 campers. the rushing waters caught many by surprise. >> our cabin was -- you open up the door and just take a step out and it was like a river right outside. so i'm going go back and pull everything out. hopefully it's not full of water. >> the storms dumped up to 4 inches of rain in the mountains. meanwhile wildfires continue to burn in the west forcing people from their homes. 14 wildfires were burning in central and northern california this weekend. there among the fires already burping in oregon and washington. firefighters say a fire in california destroyed at least eight homes.

meantime washington is battling the world wildfire in history. people had just moments to escape the flames. >> it was a lot of smoke being blown this way and it was fast. it was incredibly fast. >> dry lightning and drought conditions are helping the fire spread. eric fisher, chief meteorologist of our boston station wbz shows us what's in store for today. >> over the weekend we had a lot of heavy rain across the southwest. rain brought rains to place like los angeles and san diego, places that often don't pick up any rainfall in the summer. now, this is one of the driest spots in the entire country. they're in a severe drought if not worse if not the most of nevada. we've had a lot of rain in short order. we'll track the isn't a little farther to the north as we track the system. reaching up into idaho, much of the great basin, seeing

scattered thunderstorms again, still a flash flooding risk. we'll continue to track a little farther off to the north and east. with all these storms, always the concern of lightning strikes that could cause more wildfires. we'll be watching this situation very carefully. also news in the tropics, it's not a big bertha. it's a little bit ragged, but it will strengthenover the nefrt 24 to 48 hours. as we head through today, it tracks farther off toward the north and as it passes between the east coast and bermuda, it will likely strengthen into a hurricane and bend off to the north and east, shoots the gap perfectly, bring it offshore and bring no major impact to the east coast. i'm meteorologist eric fisher for cbs newss. >> another shaky cease-fire is under way between israel and hamas. even though israel is removing many troops from the gaza strip, the fighting may continue. susan mcginnis is in washington. susan, good morping. >> good morning, marlie.

ahead of this latest truce, israel has been pulling troops out of gaza but is continuing its air strooiks. in fact, a leader was killed the morning. this cease-fire is supposed to last seven hours following international outrage over more killings at a u.n. shelter. the israeli military started a seven-hour humanitarian cease-fire this morning but officials say the cease five does not apply to any place in gaza where troopers are still responding. israel says they will respond if attacked during the window. it follows pressure to halt the fighting. israel ground troops started leaving gaza on sunday. they say they destroyed most of the tunnels. >> we have scaled down and urged some to come back to their homes. >> reporter: before this lull in the fighting an air strike near a united nations school where

3,000 palestinians took refuge, ten killed. >> this is very clear under the law it's areas protected. >> israel claims it was targeting three terrorists. united states says it is appalled by what it calls a disgraceful attack. now 15,000 people attended a funeral on sunday for the israeli soldier who was feared to have been captured last week but was killed in combat. >> susan mcginnis, thanks so much. the 6.1 magnitude quake killed nearly 400 people in the you nonprovince. another 1,800 people were killed in the aftermath. about 12,000 holmesed collapsed. many roads caved in so rescuers had to reach the area by foot. the second american infected with the deadly ebola virus will

return to the united states tomorrow. nancy writebol will leave liberia early tuesday morning. she'll enter a quarantine unit at emory university hospital in atlanta. that's where her colleague dr. kent brantltly fights his disea. vicente aren vicente arenas. brantly who contracted the highly contagious ebola virus while in liberia was helped off an ambulance by paramedics saturday. both were wearing protective suits. >> while it's encouraging that he seems to be improving, that's really important and we're hoping he'll continue to improve. >> reporter: brantly's wife has now visited him and released a statement. i was able to see kent today. he's in good spirits. he thanked everyone for their

prayers. it can cause severe and internal bleeding and can cause weakness, vomiting, and muscle aches. it can only be passed human to human through bodily fluids and can kill up to 90 p of those infected. there's no cure or vaccine for the disease. they hope to begin clinical trials of a vaccine in september. >> and we could have vaccinated dr. brantly. it would have certainly dramatically decreased his risk of getting infected. >> reporter: the vaccine would go to health care workers who have a high risk of contracting the e do cease. on sunday leaders began arriving for a meeting with president obama. valerie jarrett is a senior adviser to president obama and says precautions are being taken. >> we're working very closely as i said with the cdc. we're making sure that we're going to observe any necessary protocols for screening.

>> and we learned brantly was able to receive an experimental serum before leaving liberia. the second aid worker is scheduled to arrive here at emory university hospital in the next couple of days. the mayor of toledo, ohio, is keeping a ban on drinking the water in place. pending more tests today, about 400,000 people in northwest ohio and southeast michigan have not had access to safe clean water since saturday. new tests on sunday showed lower levels of a toxin called micro sistines. coming from an algae bloom in late erie. state officials are making sure they have bottled water and meals as they clean up the supply. >> god forbid we shut down again and we start of and get it good. we want to make sure the drinking watt over this community is safe. >> the toxin is not affected by heat, so boiling water will only

bank. the bank's share price fell 75% after it reported a huge loss last week. here on wall street investoring are helping the markets rebound after the worst week in two years. for the week, the dow dropped 467 points, the nasdaq fell 96. and the s&p 500 lost 53 points, its biggest weekly loss since june 2012. a war over messaging. goldman sachs bought messaging. wall street had wall street messaging buts terminal costs about $20,000 a year. users can plug it in an adapt it to their system. and "guardians of the galaxy" blasted to the top. it's about extraterrestrial misfits earned $94 million in its debut. in second place "lucy" starring

in the first quarter he sacks and fumbles the ball. later manning's backup ryan nassib goes deeb to cory robinson for a 73-yard touchdown. the giants win, 17-13. both the giants and bills had former players inducted into the hall of fame on saturday. former buffalo receiver andre reed delivered forecast the most emotional speech. he paid tribute to his quarterback and fellow hall of famer jim kelly. kelly has spent the last year battling cancer. >> i was known for my tough ps going across the middle, making that catch, breaking tackles, but the toughest individual i've ever met in my life is jim kelly, number 12. >> at the conclusion of his speed, reed caught one last pass throw by kelly. fans of the team read and kelly prayed for are expressing concerns over one of the potential buyers for the buffalo

marijuana ad was seen in "the new york times." but it's still technically illegal, according to the federal government. anna werner reports on the contradictions and complications in american marijuana laws. >> reporter: in the first section of sunday's "new york times," this. a few page ad from a company called leafly offered to help new yorkers find the right kind of marijuana for medical use. new york became the latest state to legalize medical marijuana in july. 23 states in the district of colombia now allow some form of medicinal marijuana and 18 have passed pass decriminalization drugs. aaron smith with the cannabis policy center says it's time for the federal government to change its policies too. >> the immediate goal is to allow states to decide their own
