♪ >> we begin with breaking news tonight at 11:00 o'clock. good evening thanks for joining us. >> authorities just arrested another suspect in the deadly shooting of a three year old girl in philadelphia's grays ferry neighbor. "eyewitness news" reporter elizabeth hur is live at police headquarters with what you know. >> reporter: yes, jessica and chris, we have learned from police as well as sources that they do have in indeed in custody the suspected gunman in

the shooting death of that south philadelphia three year old girl. it's just happened within the hour here. sources tell us that arrest took place in the 14th district in the germantown area and the suspect was taken into custody without incident. now let's take look at the suspect's mug shot. police released just earlier today police identified him as 20 year old brandon ruffin. he was wanted by philadelphia police for quadruple shooting homicide. one of his victims the three year old little girl. the shooting occurred on friday night on etting street. sunday his accomplice douglas woods was arraigned and charged with murder and related offens offenses. throughout the weekend, police were on the look out for ruffin who was suspected to be the trigger man in that incident. and after the press conference today, police sources tell us that they were following up on a number of leads and monday one

of those leads led them to an address in the germantown area and once again tonight with the help from the us marshall's office the homicide detectives convened in that area converged in that area a rather and we are told ruffin was brought here to homicide detectives without incident and right now we are told more information will be released tomorrow but as you can imagine everyone just breathing a huge sigh of relief. they believe they now police here have in custody the trigger man in the shooting death of the three year old girl in south philadelphia. that is the very latest from here live, i'm elizabeth hur cbs-3 "eyewitness news". >> elizabeth, thank you very much. now to the growing concern about ebola not just in africa but here in the us. a man in new york is being tested for that deadly varus. in a todd quinones fifty five in the cbs-3 sat center with more on this case and more on what precautions are being taken here. todd? >> reporter: chris, we know the patient arrived this morning at the hospital with symptoms of

the virus including a high fever. he recently traveled from west africa. new york's mount sigh my hospital may be the latest front in the global battle against ebola inside doctors are treating a man with symptoms of the virus. >> the patient was promptly isolated and placed in a strict isolation facility at mount sigh know such that we could protect the patients and also any staff and other patients in the facility work work working with the cdc tests should indicate within 24 to 48 hours if that patient has ebola. doctors say chances are low. >> if this were a case of ebola which we do not know, then it is not transmitted by casual contact. >> reporter: health care workers on the look out for travelers from west africa presenting symptoms of ebola especially those who had close contact with infected patients. on monday the pennsylvania medical society said during a conference call that the state is monitoring the situation closely as are hospitals in our region.

>> ebola is not easily spread. not an airborne disease. you know, like smallpox was or tuberculosis is. anyone that was exposed would be contacted with, isolation and quarantine and so the chances of this spreading and becoming widespread is just about as close as zero as you can get. >> reporter: white house press secretary john ernest said the united states has no plans to ban incoming flights from west i was forty one can countries. people leaving those countries are being screened before they board flights to the united states and once again when they arrive. >> and there are facilities available that if and an individual is detected 60s thee symptoms they can quarantined and promptly evaluated by a medical professional. >> an infected aid worker was trance poured from liberia to a hot in atlanta. another patient an american missionary is expected to arrive tuesday. today the nih revealed both of those patients received an experimental serum called s map previously only been tested in money keys. reporting live tonight in the sat center todd quinones cbs-3 "eyewitness news".

>> todd, thank you very much. much more on the ebola outbreak online. find the latest about that virus any time at cbsphilly.com. >> three of the six philadelphia police officers charged in a corruption probe will soon be released on bail. officers perry bets, linwood norman and brian reynolds were granted bail today. all six are facing charges including racketeering, conspiracy, he can torsion, robbery, kidnapping and drug dealing. >> government moved for detention which they had a righted to indicating there was a danger to the community and rebuttable presumption and we presented evidence today that judge obviously believed rebutted that presumption. >> two other indicted officers thomas, and michael spicer ordered held in pretrial detention and officer jonathan spizer has his bail hearing postponed. funeral services are held today for the three young children killed during a carjacking crash.

hundreds gathered to celebrate they are lives as donations pour in to help the family. "eyewitness news" reporter diana rocco was at a fundraising tonight in north philadelphia. >> reporter: candles are lit and heads are bowed in remembrance of three lives cut short. monday a community offered prayers to lift up a grieving family the same day they buried 15 year old key era, 10 year old joe joe and seven year old terrence. >> i feel the pain. it's in the even my children. >> we'll be out here praying for them and raising funds for their family. >> the kids were killed a week and a half ago by two alleged carjacking suspects they were selling fruit on the corner of germantown and allegheny avenues to raise money for their church. when the outer of control suv jumped the curb striking them. >> this is not a good day but to see people coming together and having a purpose what they're doing exercising but there's a purpose. and that purpose is part of helping the remaining children keisha william. >> at the children' funeral

hundreds pack the family's seven day adventist church. to remember the life of three loved kids and support a hurting family. >> everybody is so heart broken by this. so sad. >> reporter: the fit for live event at the community center offered counseling and outlet for those wanting to help. money from the exercise fundraiser will all go to the william family. >> i really sympathize because i have nephews so, you know, it really like kind of hit home. >> reporter: the children's mother keisha williams remains hospitalized in critical condition. the family is still asking for prayers for her. in and from this fundraiser will go to keisha and her remaining two children. in north philadelphia, i'm diana rocco cbs-3 "eyewitness news". >> well it was emotional scene outside the home of an upper darby woman had was found strangled inside of her bedroom. police found the body of 38 year old griffin yesterday morning. relatives tell "eyewitness news"

that this mother of two had just graduated from nursing school. investigators reportedly are searching for a person of interest in that case. >> well tonight a montgomery counsel too community hit the streets to fight back against crime. "eyewitness news" in abington for the town watch council's 15th annual pre night out block pear. residents police officers and civic leaders got together to promote crime prevention and neighborhood comradery. they do so in anticipation of tomorrow night's national night out. >> a glimmer of hope in the middle east crisis. tonight palestinians and israeli government have agreed to a 72 hour cease fire plan proposed by the egyptians. a seven hour cease fire failed earlier today after israel says hamas launched for rocket tax. israeli forces responded with a missile strike that reportedly killed a young girl and injured more than two dozen others. despite big push in harrisburg today philadelphia schools nor closer to getting funding from a proposed

cigarette tax. educators and parents rallied at the state capitol while the governor met behind closed doors with gop leaders. but no agreement was reached to bring the house back in session to vote on that $2 per pack tax. that money would help cover the district's $81 million budget gap. >> anything short of that will be -- will force 1300 potential layoffs and class sizes to be approximately 41 and the potential for school not to open in september. >> governor corbett says he would consider advancing the district money to help schools open on time. today marked the deadline for investors to submit bids for atlantic city's bankrupt revel casino. the $2 billion bids are sealed and will be opened next week by a new york law firm. federal bankruptcy judge in camden will ultimately decide which offer is accepted. if no buyer is found the casino may closeuping more than 3,000 jobs at risk. >> a possible rip current turned deadly down the shore tonight.

the officials say a woman drowned in atlantic city this evening. after getting caught in rip current this happened around 7:00 o'clock. just off the south carolina avenue beach. lifeguards had gone home for the day at that time. surf could be rough in the com coming days and meteorologist kathy orr is standing by to tell us why. kathy? chris, all is dry for now. you can see on storm scan3. these are clouds associated with a frontal boundary offshore. that will help to guide bertha well out to sea. but its many packs will continue to increase a especially down the shore over the next couple of days. i'll explain plus talk about our weather tomorrow which may be a one hit wouldn't that's coming up with the seven day. >> kathy. thank you. >> also tonight, we're getting a look at mother nature' wrath. the muddy mess that residents are now dealing with after some dangerous mudslides. >> would you drink this muddy water? the latest round of tests in the water crisis in ohio and what it means for residents. >> also, ahead tonight at 11:00 o'clock, for pounding

people have been relying and bolted walter for drinking, washing dishes, brushing their teeth and bathing. >> lifting in conjunction with the ohio epa the no drink advisory. our water is safe. >> the ban impacted three counties in ohio and one in michigan. >> despite a judge' warning the couldn't havinged killer jodi arias will represent herself as she fights for her life. today in arizona judge allowed the 34 year old to represent herself in the penalty phase of her murder trial. arias could face the death penalty for killing her ex-boyfriend in a jealous rage six years ago. the judge who urged arias -- urged arias who previously tried to fire her defense attorneys to reconsider penalty phase is set to begin on september 8th. >> the former white house press secretary james brady died tod today. brady was of course shot and paralyzed during 1981 assassination attempt on the life of president ronald reagan.

where she learned to get control of her headaches at the onset before they debilitate her. >> lease is a certified hypnosis practitioner. >> hypnosis has helped many people when one session i will teach them how powerful their mind is that they can lower the experience of pain. >> experts say hypnosis uses guided relaxation and intense concentration to help a person's attention become so focused anything else going on including severe pain is temporarily blocked out or ignored. >> the subconscious is open to positive suggestion and direction. >> i think hypnosis does play roll for some patients in managing episodic migraines. >> this doctor headache specialist says studies show hypnosis can be beneficial in managing headaches. but it's not a proven cure. >> if an individual real lies that they're beginning to have a

migraine headache, then self hypnosis as well as other types of relaxation and calming behaviors can be used to try to abort the pain as well as to lessen the impact of the accompanied symptoms. >> i say to the sceptic, what do you have to lows? it's definitely a tool that i found very helpful. the national institutes of health reviewed several studies on hypnosis concluding that it is effective with some chronic pain including tension headaches. i'm stephanie stahl, cbs-3 "eyewitness news". >> kathy is with us now. a little bit of sunshine after kind of a gray weekend really. we've had at least two or three of those gray weekends. >> in a row, yeah. i think we're going to get lucky. we're looking at a very decent seven day but first we have to get through some heat and also some storms. tonight it is a beautiful evening to crack the windows and not too warm, not too humidity just yet. you can see little bit of haze even or moisture down the shore.

but still a little busy on the boards in ocean city, cape may county. on storm scan3 skies are clear to mostly cloudy. those clouds are far offshore associated with that stationary front that moved back toward the coast over the weekend and helped keep the clouds around but now thankfully that is long gone. temperatures are very comfortable. mainly in the 70s. with the exception of lancaster checking in at 69. the poconos down to 61 degrees with a mainly clear sky. during the day on tuesday, temperatures will rise into the 90s. high pressure will squeeze warm humid air up the eastern seaboard. we have an approaching front from the north and west. and here's that stationary boundary that's going to help keep hurricane bertha far out to sea. now, during the day on wednesday, the front gets a little closer. it sets off an afternoon shower or storm. we'll see more of a northerly wind component building in after that for thursday. we get into this comfort zone that is going to linger for thursday, friday, even into the weekend with northerly winds, low humidity, deep blue skies

and temperatures in the lower 80s. here's check on bertha doesn't look like much tonight. losing some of its strength still a cat good one storm the hurricane hunters are going to go back out during the early morning hours of tuesday to check and see if it indeed is still a hurricane but this stationary front once again will keep it well offshore and during the day tomorrow, we will see it move in between the areas of the mid slant and also bermuda. winds 75 miles an hour moving to the north northeast at 20 miles an hour. by tomorrow it should be reduced to a tropical storm but a strong one. and then be far offshore becoming extra tropical by wednesday. not close to the shore but impacting the shore with increasing wave action and dangerouripcurrent threats. during the day tomorrow moderate risk will continue and then the could go to high risk by wednesday as this storm pulls away. so please down the shore the delaware beaches stay away from

the water when those beaches are not guarded listen to the lifeguards want to keep you safe. overnight partly cloudy and mild the low 67. during the day on tuesday, mostly sunny, hot and steamy. and my question is, will this be a one hit wonder? i don't know. we usually have about six, 90-degree days in the month of august. this will be our 15th for the entire summer. the average is 23. i don't see us having that much more. here's look at the exclusive "eyewitness weather" seven day forecast. at least in the next seven days this will be the only 90-degree day. it turns noticeably cooler for thursday and friday and in the wake of that front on wednesday. the weekend looks great comfortable lower 80s to mid 80s and monday 86. still sunny this could be the longest comfortable sunny stretch of the entire summer season. >> whoa! >> earlier tonight i was on the nfl network's top 10 program. >> yes. >> i don't know if you check that out. >> how about that? we were talking about trending topic of 2013. and the eagles snow bowl game.

eagle. the first thing that jumps out at the quarterback position. mark sanchez is listed as the number 2qb ahead of matt barkley and recently acquired cornerback nolan carol is also listed as the top kick returner. he's having a nice training camp and the coaches are taking notice. >> he drives himself every day. he is a perfectionist. i moved him inside to a dime align many in he's never played. he's struggling through the i placement of a dime linebacker as opposed to a corner. he's in the middle of a learning curve and hard on himself. i'm very pleased where nolan carol bringing. >> the rest of the defense is focusing on improving poorly ranked pass rush from last season. they brought in former all pro linebacker kevin green to consult on quarterback punish many during his 15 years in the league, he was considered one of the best. valuable experience to bring to the younger guys. >> i'm just, you know, teaching some of the things that i did on the corners as far as defeating

offensive tackles big guys on the corner. so i'm primarily concentrating on pass rush fundamental and technique and this kind of thing. >> it was very basic fundamental way of rushing the passer he's bringing to our guys. you have to ask our guys their response to kevin but we're real excited about picking his brain for three or four days before he leaves. >> day off for the phillies after that rough week mend washington falling at the nationals back to back shut ou outs. cole hamels was on the mound yesterday. he pitched a good game allowing only four hits and one unearned run in seven innings. but the offense still not giving him any help. steven strausburg limited the phils to just three hits. the team gets back to work tomorrow night at citizens bank park against the houston astros. >> meanwhile ryan howard was joined by some of his teammates at the franklin institute this evening to host the stand up for literacy event. all proceeds benefit the ryan howard big piece foundation which promotes academic and athletic development in

children. a great cause. other team news earlier today the proper its proper office signed another short stop' ticket 16 year old jonathan, from panama he gets a $600,000 bonus at 16 as part of the deal. but for now, 19 year old jp crawford we've been hearing about him is still the top pros spec at the at short stop. some other local sluggers on roll in the little league national championship. taney dragons led by pitcher monet davis came away were wins over the weekend in the middle atlantic regional. next up the team will play new york tomorrow night. go get them!
