. this is the "cbs morning news" for thursday, august 7th, 2014. good morning. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. the people in hawaii are bracing for the first hurricane to make landfall in more than 20 years. the eye of hurricane iselle is expected to make landfall near or on the big island tonight. the storms have winds near 90 miles an hour. it could bring up to 12 inches of rain, and right behind hurricane julio poses another threat this weekend. bigad shaban is in hawaii with the storm preparations. >> reporter: schools, businesses, and some of hawaii's most popular tourist attractions will be closed today. since 1950 only three hurricanes have made landfall in hawaii and now the fourth, iselle, is

expected to come to shore here in hilo in just a few hours. workers at hawaii hotels are boarding up. emergency responders are planning for the worst. a potential back-to-back hit from a pair of powerful storms. barney sheffield is the disaster coordinator for red cross in hawaii county and he's worried about potential damage to the ports. >> if it rains enough in hilo we would probably catch enough water for people to supply but there's a food problem. there's a limited amount of food at any one time. >> reporter: ivan piilani has seen a hurricane firsthand. it came through more than 30 years ago i i'm not worried but pretty anxious to see what happens. >> reporter: drivers face long lines to fill up on gas and many rush to fill up on food and water. within hours store shelves were

empty. >> we have run out of water and we might not get shipments of that until thursday or friday. >> reporter: by then iselle is expected to leave hawaii with plenty of water of her own. an emergency spokesman said if there is a major disaster, they could have resources sent immediately from the west coast but if some of those supplies need to be shipped, it could take up to a week before they arrive. bee began shaban, cbs news, hilo, hawaii. the back-to-back storm systems could pack a punch for people in hawaii. eric fisher, meteorologist of our boston station wbbz is very busy this morning. >> we have three storms we're watching including genevieve that's well out in the ocean. of course, a lot of attention is on iselle which is close to hawaii. behind that is julio, about 500 miles away from the big island. still on its own but soon following a similar path.

these storms in r in water that's not necessarily hot but warm enough. these are sea surface temperatures. usually your storms are stronger when they come from the south where the water is warmer. it should be enough to keep iselle a hurricane or at the very least a strong tropical storm at landfall it will cross the entire chain and expect by the time we head toward friday evening. there are a number of hurricanes up. in 21 years the warning is up for the big island. the entire chain under watches or wrarning. behind that we have julio. the track looks a little farther to the north and may spare hawaii for the worst.

i'm meteorologist eric fisher for cbs news. a fast moving wild five forced the i evacuation for 275 homes in oregon, overnight. the fire, not far from the washington border, thick smoke has filled the air and the small city. fire officials say it is zero percent contained and has the potential to get worse. and this morning russia is raises its stakes. u.n. officials say about 20,000 highly rained russian troops are amassed along the borders in ukraine. heightened fears of an invasion. fighting has grown so intense the dutch prime minister announced wednesday that the search for remains of the victims of malaysia flight 17 will be halted. more than half of the 298 people were from the netherlands. the plane is believed to have been shot down by rebels using

missiles. meanwhile russia is pushing back against sanction. russian president vladimir putin shows he is not backing down from the united states and european union. on wednesday he ordered trade cuts that include a ban on all u.s. agricultural imports for one year. that equals about $1.2 billion worth of business. it's just a small percentage of overall u.s. agricultural exports but the ban is expected to have the strongest impact on u.s. poultry industry. >> this will hurt. russia is important. it feeds into something that russia's been trying to accomplish for a long time and that's to build up its own agricultural production. >> reporter: the import ban is for retaliation over tough sanction put over russia's control in the ukraine crisis. they accuse russia of backing

s separatists fighting in ukraine. president obama did not comment on the ban wednesday night but he did comment on the sanctions. >> sanctions are working as intended in putting enormous pressure and strain on the russian economy. he's going to be hurting his economy and his own people over the long term. >> the full list of products to be banned by russia will be published today. the u.s. sells about $300 billion worth of poultry to russia each year. other leading exports include tobacco, nuts, and soybeans. anne-marie? >> thank you so much. it's no surprise it's hurt the public's perception in tu stais. a new cbs poll shows 56% of americans see russia as unfriendly or an enemy. that's up sharply from 24% in 2007. the poll also shows many disapprove of howl president obama has handled the conflict. now, the president just wrapped

up a historic three-day summit with african leaders amid the deadly ebola outbreak and he vows the u.s. will continue its work to help contain the virus. >> countries that have been affect ready the first to admit that what's happened here is that the public health systems have been overwhelmed. >> the president's comment comes just as the world health organization released new numbers about the outbreak. there are now more than 1,700 suspected cases of ebola in four west african nations. officials say the virus has killed 932 people so far. and despite the new number, some doctors on the ground believe the impact of the disease is much worse. debora patta is tracking developments in south africa. >> reporter: a top liberian health official tells us there may already be hundreds more fatalities than reported and the outbreak is going to get worse. one of the epicenters of the dae

cease is in liberia's capital where there are only two treatment sterps. one of them has only 18 beds for ee bow va victims. that means many people are being left to die in their villages without any medical care. on the front line of the battle, many health workers have died. officials say it's because they don't have proper protective gear or adequate training, but it is fear of the disease that is causing more harm than the disease itself. >> we've got to use sanitizer. >> reporter: teams are patrolled neighborhoods to educate the public on how the disease is spread. it's causing people to hide sick relatives and bury their bodies in secret. what's different about this ebola outbreak is that it's the first time in the history of the disease that it spread to urban arias, places like the capital of liberia, home to more than 1

million people have been hardly hit and it's proving to be extremely complicated. deborah pa tarks cbs news, johannesburg, south africa. close arguments began this morning in the trial of oscar pistorius as the five-month-long case comes to an end. the double amputee oliympian arrived in court this morning. he's accused of murdering his girlfriend reeva steenkamp. a judge will ultimately decide his fate. and a woman who snuck onboard a southwest airline flight without a ticket says she'll never do it again. 62-year-old marilyn hartman pleaded no contest in court yesterday. she passed by document checks in san jose, went through security, and boarded a plane without a ticket. hartman wasn't caught until she landed in los angeles, but she won't say how she did it. >> i don't want to help the enemy. i'm first and foremost an

close-up pictures of a comet. the european space agency released still photos of a comet 67-p taken from just 67 miles away from the rosetta space probe. this is the first time a spacecraft will be orbiting a comet. it will be observing the giant ball of dust and ice. in november it will dump a lander on its surface. now, president obama is considering using his executive authority to loosen immigration policy. the influx of illegal immigrants at the southern border has the law enforcement stretched thin. in texas, volunteers are helping. manuel bojorquez takes us there. >> reporter: we spent a few hours with reserve deputy as he tried to stop smugglers sneaking
