in a row n my view there can be only one. the largest and full moon of the year. that's what's happening this sunday. and in fact, the full moon last month and the full moon next month, also bit larger than average, bit brighter, but this this is the super moon. that happens. the moon will actually be closer to the earth. moon is sometimes farther we call apagy. and fitter, and if you have a fum moon, little closer to the earth, little bit, 31,000 miles. that's kind of cool. and that actually means it looks largest and brighter. and so you see here, comparison of different full moons of the year. the one this sunday is 14% bigger, which actually makes it as much as 30% brighter than the smaller full moons of the year. >> fantastic. we will be looking forwards to it when we come in work monday morning. but when is the best time to look for that super moon? >> the nice thing about watching the moon and the sky, is any time is nice. i mean my personal favorite is if you go outside and watch it rise, then you can actually see it in comparison to the horizon, that makes it seem
6:46 am
even bigger even more spectacular. so i would be going out close to sunset, looking for, you know, relatively clear horizon, but watch it all weekends long if you can start tonight all the way through sunday, just go find moons, and enjoy how beautiful it is. >> nasa has been watching this for awhile. they had a spacecraft orbiting the mooney understand for five years. what are some of the pretty cool things we've learned from this particular mission? >> that's right, when you look up at the moon this weaken, think about the spacecraft we have up there, orbiting the moon right now called rlo, it is doing things like measuring the temperature of the moon, seeing the coldest temperatures in the solar system, it is looking at craters, actually piecing together the history of the moon. here is a mountain, see this little rock on top of the mountain there. that little rock is actually the size after large football stadium. so there is this spectacular terrain, learning a lot about the history of our solar system. moon 4 billion years ago, when lots of things collided together. and it has remained relatively un changed un like the earth, no atmosphere to erase of the
6:47 am
records of this crate egg. here you see animation of these dramatic giant impacts that form the moon. and even today, we still see the occasional crater being formed. so, there is a lot of about the history of the solar system, even the history of our own planet that we learn by studying the moon. >> doctor, we appreciate the insight i'm look forwards to glucowatch it all weekend. >> thank you, doctor, appreciate it. >> if hair starts growing out of my face and i start how long, it is all good. >> oh, good. >> i mean, really growing. careful now. >> we'll watch out for that, wolf man. right now 6:50. katie has one more check on your weekends forecast, and we do traffic and weather together. >> first a look at what's coming up tonight during evening prime time viewing right here on cbs-3. >> werewolf.
