of a dead teenager. a prominent political family nominate president obama to take part in a vital campaign aimed at raising awareness of a deadly disease. this is the "cbs morning news" disease. this is the "cbs morning news" for tuesday, august 12th, 2014. captioning funded by cbs good morning, good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. well, this morning, family and friends are trying to understand robin williams' death. the brilliant actor died yesterday of an apparent suicide. williams was 63 years old and had been suffering from what his publicist called severe depression. his body was found in his san francisco-area home. wendy gillette has our report. >> good morning, vietnam! >> reporter: robin williams made people laugh. >> just i have fun doing it. there's something that kicks in that's kind of a joy where you

just get excited. >> reporter: with his comedict genius, he managed to poke fun fun without being offensive. williams starts in detroit, doing imitations early on to muse himself. >> i was an only child. i moved from place to place. that was a reality. >> reporter: he went on to prestigious juilliard, where he met christopher reeves. the two became friends and then the wacky "mork & mindy." his giant hits like "mrs. doubtfire" and "good morning, vietnam." >> hanna! >> reporter: to sell animated films. and he proved he could be just as serious as he was funny. >> you've never had your best friend's head in your lap, watch him gasp his last breath. >> reporter: he won an oscar for his dramatic performance in

goodwill hunting. williams also won three grammy awards and six golden globes but williams' success did not keep him out of trouble. he fought an addiction to cocaine in the late '70s and early '80s. and went to rehab in 2006 for alcohol addiction. he checked into a facility again to stay sober. he married three times leaving behind three children, two girls and a boy. in march, williams was hospitalized for hospital problems to have valve surgery. he came back laughing. >> i can prep standing up. >> reporter: he remembered to television on cbs' "the crazy one." bringing his crazy still. >> how much is script -- >> 25%. >> reporter: despite his demons, williams was a steam roller on the stage and screen for more than three decades often outrageous and often leaving them laughing. wendy gillette for cbs news. >> well, in a statement released

last night, president obama recalled williams' groundbreaking role as mork, saying he arrived in our lives as an alien but ended up touching every element of the human spirit. he was one of a kind." we'll have more reaction to robin williams' death later in this broadcast. in is another night of unred in a st. louis, missouri, in a suburb where 18-year-old michael brown was shot and killed on saturday. it's still unclear why the officer has started shooting. the fbi has opened the investigation. omar villafranca is in ferguson, good morning, omar. >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. another busy night in ferguson. we saw officers in riot gear, also heard reports of rubber bullets being shot but that still did not scare residents away. police used tear gas monday night to break up an unruly

crowd protesting the death of 18-year-old michael brown. at least five people were arrested. the unrest came despite calls for calm by brown's parents. >> i don't want no violence. we don't want no violence. >> michael wouldn't want no violence. >> reporter: the browns' plea came after the violence that resulted in 32 arrests. >> we do not rob our city. we do not do this. we have to use that gas station. we need that walmart. >> reporter: michael brown was shot to death on saturday during an altercation with police. at least two witnesses said a police officer shot the unarmed teen as he had his armed raised. ♪ >> reporter: on monday, community leaders pledged to keep the pressure on police and find out exactly what happened. >> we're going to stay committed until this is solved so this never happens to again to anybody's child. >> this small rupp of residents protested in front of the ferguson police department all night to show their support tour

the deceased teenager. >> reporter: dozens of officers patrolled the streets until early morning, but residents promised to continue the protest. later on this morning, there is a protest planned in front of the st. louis county prosecutor's office. residents are saying that they want the investigation to speed up. anne-marie. >> omar villafranca in ferguson, missouri. thank you omar. well, police gunfire is what killed a california mother taken hostage during a bank robbery last month. ballistic reports say misty holt-sing was hit by ten bullets fired by stockton police. fired by an suv where she was robbers. 33 officers fired some 600 shots during a one-hour chase and standoff. police say they had no other options. the robbers fired more than 100 rounds. family says the inciden raised serious questions and

concerns. and overseas now to iraq, this morning, the escalating military and humanitarian crisis is now rivaled by a political showdown. iraq's president has chosen a new prime minister. but the incumbent, nuri al maliki, says he'll fight to stay in power. meanwhile, the u.s. is delivering more humanitarian aid to those fleeing militants. most are the minority yazidis. the u.s. is now arming the kurdish fighters battling the well-armed militants and continues to use air strikes to try and slow the isis advance. susan mcginnis is in washington with more on the political turmoil in iraq. susan, good morning. >> good morning, anne-marie. nuri al maliki has been iraq's prime minister for eight years. his rise to power is supported by the united states. but this morning, the obama administration and iraq's president abandoned maliki and
