but this investigation continues. >> about half inch over, bit more and we would be planning a funeral now. >> reporter: philadelphia police commissioner charles ramsey says the department is very fortunate this morning that one of their own is alive after exchange every gunfire in the talcony section of the sit. >> i he suffered a graze wound to the left side of his head, very very fortunate that he was not injured any more seriously. >> authorities say around 12:45, officer stephen stephen korpalski and his part near reported to radio call with man with a gun on ditman street. >> saw the guy at magee and torresdale. they went to stop the male. immediately the male fired upon them striking officer korpalski, left side of his head. >> korpalski and three other officers returned fire striking the 40 year old suspect. the man's gun was recovered at the scene. he was pronounced dead around 1:30. when medics arrived officer korpalski was sitting up and talking. neighbors say gunfire is becoming a scary norm. >> seems like gunshots almost

every weekend. it never used to be like this. >> reporter: officer korpalski 14 year veteran married three week old child. will be given medical leave and away from pal troll for counselling. >> we don't want to spend our day shooting or hurting anybody. when you have a situation like that, it is something that we don't take for granted. >> the police department has not yet released the identity of the suspect in this case. again, it is an ongoing investigation. the district attorney's office and internal affairs will look into this since it is a police involved shooting. live at einstein medical center, cleve bryan cbs-3 "eyewitness news". >> cleve, thank you. more breaking news now in north philadelphia. officers fired shots at a pitbull charging toward them. this happened around 2:30 this morning, near sixth and tioga. luckily no injuries were reported. the there is no word on the dog's condition or if it was even struck in that shooting. all right, time to get the traffic and weather together. start things off with katie.

out on the skydeck how's it feel? >> not too bad. good morning everybody, the real difference in our forecast today is actually going to end up being a little bit more humidity, more than anything, and otherwise we ends with i think pretty decent weather. few more clouds than maybe what we started with yesterday. let's go ahead take you out to storm scan 36789 we have been tracking disturbance nearby primarily to the south. you can see some of the moisture that's been creeping in, to our southern most counties, as we expected. so, cape may, for example lewes, rehoboth, sussex county you may end one just quick little shower that hit. that's i the rest david will clear out for you end one some sun. that's where the clouds are many doing, from live neighborhood network shot outside beach patrol headquarters in margate city so yes little cloud cover to start things offer. but the sun is trying to break through, and we end with i think pretty decent beach day overall. more be on shore breeze with the easterly flow, ten to 15 miles per hour, making it feel coup. but the high hits 08 at the beach, water temperatures mid 70s, not too terrible, and it

side streets, like keystone, walker cottage. best bet just stay with frankford avenue. frankford avenue will get you from point a to point b and around that police activity, the septa 56 bus typically uses torresdale avenue as well. and they're putting detour in effect, lever i can, up to frankford, down to nor. best bet stick with frankford avenue. if you are trying to catch the 56 bus instead of torresdale this morning. here is a live look at an accident scene. this is 95 northbound, right at the ramps for 291. which would be the platt bridge. philly firefighters, with the hook and ladder on the scene there, already back up, trying to get into that one lane traffic pattern again, this is all north 95, as you are coming up toward the airport. we had some problems last night on the way home with amtrak, but all service has been restored. on the northeast corridor mass transit running with no delays. erika, back over to you. >> bob, thank ferguson, missouri where tensions between protesters and police boiled over again. we have some new video right hereof police firing tear gas

at those protesters. correspondent andrew spencer has more. >> the national guard now on hand in ferguson, missouri, police did not try to enforce any kind of curfew overnight. instead, they formed lines of law enforcement, ready to respond to violent outbursts. even as members of the community urged for calm, a bottle is thrown, just over 11:00 p.m. and police swarmed to arrest a man in front of the crowd of protesters. elsewhere, a protester holds the line with a ripped out street sign. do not enter. but, as more flare ups prompted more arrests and with reports of people being shot police started moving forward, launching smoke and stun grenades, and in some areas tear gas. >> if you are not media, you need to disperse immediately or you will be subject to arrest. do it now. >> it wasn't long before police started moving everyone. >> officer, what's going on? >> clearing out this area, not safe to be here any more,

okay? >> okay, are you moving the protesters or the media or what? >> everybody. >> a mid mostly peaceful protests episodes of violence are taking a toll on the community, point highway patrol captain ron johnson stressed demonstrators monday night. >> the businesses are dying listen, i want you to look back at other communities where we've had riots throughout this country and these communities aren't being rebuilt. >> this beauty supply store looted twice in the last week is among the businesses which will be boarded up for good. andrew spencer cbs-3 "eyewitness news". well, philadelphia police now have two suspects in the videotaped beating after park ranger in love park. charges against 19 year old curtis tanner and 17 year old include aggrivated assault and making terroristic threats. police say the video shows skateboarder attacking the ranger from afternoon after refusing request to leave. there is no skateboarding allowed in love park. a skateboard here is also a parks and recreation worker does not know the victim, but he is angry about this attack.

>> there is always one, two bad apples. i understand this kid's problem is, and i hope he gets the help he needs. it is quite obvious that he does. >> the range is her now out of the hospital. police are asking anyone who knows about the third person seen in the video recording to please come forwards. a nine year old boy is lucky to be alive this morning, after he's hit by a pick-up truck while crossing the street in kensington. it happened on elk art street near frankford avenue around 5:30 last night. eyewitnesses say the driver of the pick-up truck was talking on his cell phone when he hit the boy. but, it is what he did next that surprised him the most. >> pick him up, shoved him in the car, didn't say nothing just shoved him in the car and took off. i was shocked but i was like thinking like maybe he's just like worried he wants to get him help like right away. >> the man flag down some officers, who then took the child to the hospital. we're told he's expected to make a full recovery. there have been no charges, no

word exactly on if the driver in that incident will face any charges. here is a look at things happening today. israeli, palestinian negotiators have until 5:00 this afternoon to come to up agreement for long lasting peace agreement in the gaza strip. so far negotiators have extended the current cease-fire by 24 hours. >> also, a sentence day for former philadelphia city council secretary nancy gonzalez. gonzalez was convicted of stealing $25,000 in government checks from a woman in her care. and temple student start moving in to campus dorms today. freshmen owls can begin unloading all of their stuff at 8:00 and just couple of hours. the fun continues through thursday. there has been a lot of speculation about whether pope francis will come to philadelphia next year. now the pope himself is talking about his plans. hear what he said next. >> also straight ahead growing epidemic in the u.s. 40% of americans will develop

dead. this is live look right now from the scene near torresdale and magee avenues in talcony. police say the suspect shot officer stephen korpalski then police shot and killed the suspect. the officer was treated for a graze wound to the head. >> searches have found the body every missing wife of us marine. her alleged lover is now under arrest. authorities believe christopher lee may have murdered erin corewin then hid her body in a minds shaft deep in the california dessert. investigators suggest lee may have wanted to kill corewin because he believed she was pregnant with his child. and he didn't want his own wife to find out. corewin vanished from her home on the marine base at 29 pal until june. police in southern california meantime will tell us more about a mass shooting plot target ago high school. investigators say, two teenage boys intend today kill three staff members at south pasadena high school, and as many student as possible. administrators tipped off police after learning about the threat. police say the two did not have weapons but they were

trying to get them. it is time for traffic and weather together at 6:30 -- 6:13. >> good morning looking at wider zoom here on the latest disturbance at hands only clipping our area, so it is really just sussex county delaware, then in through cape may county seeing any activity in the way of couple of whimpy little showers. rest of russ in the clear literally and figure tiffly for now. but there is an atmosphere gathering moistures on our hands here. we have the stalled front across virginia, the pieces of energy that keep riding along it so, i would say if you are going to see a shower at all today it would probably be back toward central pennsylvania, generally our area is in the clear. tomorrow similar story. but then eventually, new disturbance will make it far enough north to hit us and bring with it some showers some storms. thursday is the day where you may want to consider the umbrella however in the next two days we're good. more humidity, though, starts to go creep up on us, as we gather the moisture, 84 degrees for today and tomorrow, by thursday, it is a touch cooler, 82 degrees for

you out there again that shower storm, with the next disturbance, probably keep the clouds and showers around for friday too. >> morning, 6:14 on a tuesday morning, looking live, northeast philadelphia. police still blocking this stretch of torresdale avenue. as they investigate the overnight incident. that involved a philadelphia police officer. let's go, as we go to the maps here torresdale avenue closed, between levick and princeton. there are the two majors there along torresdale. use frankford avenue in the northeast, septa's route 56 bus, typically uses torresdale avenue. so on detour there. there is the detours the 56 bus will go up levick, across frankford, and back down to nor, of course the opposite and use robbins coming back toward the northeast but if you typically wait on the corner for the 56 bus head right for frankford avenue. you will be in good shape this morning. here is a live look at i59 the accident scene northbound right near i291, the off ramp therefore the platt bridge amtrak had some othe mass transit

>> i know. >> can't wait to see the game. also, breaking news, in this look at today's headlines on cbs-3. philadelphia police officer was grazed by gunfire early this morning in talcony. police returned fire on that suspect in the suspect hit several times. he died later at the hospital. and more breaking news, law enforcement personnel say two people were hit by gunfire, and more than two dozen arrested in ferguson, missouri. demonstrators continue after the deadly police shooting avianca can american teenager august 9th. and two teenagers facing charges in the beating of a philadelphia park ranger police are still searching for another suspect. stay with us. we a are back in just a moment.

"eyewitness news" reporter cleve bryan has been on the story all morning liver at einstein medical center with the latest. good morning. >> good morning, well, commissioner ramsey was here this morning he really put it in perspective. half inch in the wrong direction with the bullet, and the police department would be planning a funeral instead officer is now home with his family recovering. now, all this started around 12:45 this morning officer korpalski and his partner were responding to a call for a man with a gun on the 6400 block of ditman street. they saw the man described as heavy set black male, with orange shirt near the intersection of magee and torresdale. they tried to stop him. they say the man immediately fired at police, striking officer korpalski in the left side of the head. he and three office officers returned fire striking four

year old suspect. the man's gun was recovered at the scene and he was pronounced dead around 1:30. korpalski sitting up, talking and considered very fortunate this morning. >> it is something that unfortunately does happen periodically. we have pretty brazen criminals, and our officers, that's what we do. we sends them in hatches way. we put them in the toughest areas to go after the people that are causing a lot of harm out here in our community. >> taking a live look at the time scene, this is an ongoing investigation police have not yet released the name of the suspect in this case, and internal affairs as well as district attorney' involved with this, have been placed on desk duty pending results, we understand that officer korpalski will be put on medical leave. live at the einstein medical center, cleve bryans". >> thank you. more breaking news this morning, another philadelphia police officer forced to fire his gun overnight. this time because after pitbull charging at him near sixth anti-owing i in north

philly. it happened around 2:30. it is not clear if the dog was actually struck during that shooting. >> tears of tear gas and smoke hang over ferguson, missouri, clashing once again overnight. they came under attack as they prodded demonstrators to keep moving. >> grand jury could begin hearing mike brown shooting investigation. looking live here at tractor-trailer drank link off bridge on the new jersey turnpike after an accident in rich field park bergin county. the cab there landed in the creek, and the truck also caught fire. we're told the person has been removed from the water. no word on what caused this crash, or if anyone was hurt.

>> 6:33. >> good, more everybody, overall pretty nice day underway for us once again yesterday, actually very much the same. we have sunshine out there few more clouds out there this morning, and what we saw yesterday morning but we do also have couple of showers that i do want to pinpoint for you. if you were with us yesterday morning, probably remember me talking about the possibility that the southern counties in our area could get clipped by couple of showers. this is the northern most edge of disturbance to our south. and that's exactly what we're getting, couple wimpy showers, no huge deal, if you get sprinkled in cape may, don't worry, not wash out of beach day. rather most of us ends up with nice weather. look at the difference in the dew points, remember the lower the dew point drier the air; and the high it is, more moisture in the atmosphere. it is steamy right now in dover, at 71 degrees, on the dew point, 48 in mount pocono. so very broad spectrum, of humidity levels, right now but i think everybody starts to notice it with time. currently most of russ into the the mid 60s here's bob's poolside forecast, five beach

can compare it to is, you know citizens bank park during the playoff runs, you know in 2008-2009. just unbelievable. the tying run, remember the ball hit. as soon that is got through the gap, could you hear the anticipation of the crowd, as the runners coming around second, third, getting louder and lowered, as soon as he crossed the play, the place exploded. it was unbelievable. >> your son got to be leading the rally there with the leadoff bunt you mentioned watch was it like for you being the dad seeing your son doing this? were you nervous excited what? >> you know, you love for your kid to be the hero, come through in the big spot. but you hate for your kid to be up in that big spot too. so, you know, the last thing you want to do is see him fail in that position. but it was amazing. >> well they really are amazing team incredible group of kids.

they're getting so much attention, so much excitement on the team, on world-wide stage. who are you they coping with this? >> well, we've been kind of in a bubble up here. we've been on the road for seems like close to month now. and in bristol connecticut you know, the kids even let them come home, put them on bus, let them come here to williamsport. so see the newspapers, and you know they see the crowd of course. they're living in the dorms here in kind of sheltered from the outside world. >> now they've had a little bit after break between sunday's game and tomorrow night's game. how are they preparing to play las vegas? >> parent: they're practicing each day. we just have two practice sessions on the field, later in the day a session batting cages. but it is a lot of time. a lot of time between the games. the wind saved us, we lost that game sunday night we

would had to have play. so i rather have the rest than have to work your way through all of that pitching to get back to where we are now. >> oh, yes. well speaking of your amazing pitcher, your son's teammate there, mo'ne who is doing an awesome job on the mound, she will be back on the mound on wednesday night. we understand. how are you expecting her to perform? >> parent: well, you know, i was so nervous i was sick for that kid the first game of this, and thinking, you know, there was no way in the world you know the kid could live up to the hype surrounding her. and she not only lived to up it she surpassed it. this game tomorrow night is the real deal. that is the very big very strong hitting team. so i don't know. i just want the kid to compete. i mean the way i look at it, i think there is close to 15,000 teams started this tournament. you know we're down to two

that are undefeated. so it is just incredible what they've been able to accomplish. >> real i and we're all cheering for them back home here. like the kids all say, it is all about the team. we will certainly be clearing for that team tomorrow night. steve, thank you. >> your welcome. thanks. >> take care, good luck. oh, so exciting, one day to go. right now 39:00. just in time for the 79th anniversary of social security, we have the updated financial status of the trust funds. >> the report contains some optimistic parts. according to cbs news business analyst, jill schlessinger, also some scary realities for programs that account for about 40% of federal spending. she is live in new york, good morning, jill. >> reporter: good morning. >> so, before diving into the numbers there is morning, can you give us some primer on social security? >> absolutely. this is a pay as go system. funded by payroll taxes that's the fica line item on ooh paystubs. knack 1977 congress enacted a change which allowed the

government to collect more money from taxes than was necessary to funds social security obligations. now, that created what you have heard a lot about, a surplus. but, as aging baby boomers have tapped the system, costs have started to exceed the income, and now those surpluses are shrinking. now, here's the big point. despite having to dip into those funds the combined trust funds assets are still worth a lot of money $2.6 trillion how financially sounds is the system? i know people have concerns about it. >> well, there are concerns. according to the report, the social security trust fund, will depleted in 2033. medicare they'll keep paying benefits without any changes through 2030. but, here's the big issue. an urgent problem has developed with the nation's disability benefits program. the report projects it's going

>> cdc predict two out of five americans will develop type two diabetes at some point during adulthood. >> what's causing this dramatic increase, are there things you can do to reverse your risk and this trend. family physician doctor rob dan off on call this morning with details. good morning to you so good to see you. >> this really is strag erring number of americans now, you know, being diagnosissed when diabetes, what's contribute to go this? >> really scary. the two big rest weight gain. getting bigger as population, no doubt about it, you know, in the 1980s there was like 20% risk of diabetes. now it is double the 40%. so weight gain, inactivity, we sit more than ever. we don't do as much. poor quality food, simple cash owe hydrates, and getting older. so the higher risk over the age of 45, although now seeing it in more in younger people more than ever before. >> how does it translate into seeing diabetes? >> not sure what causes it,

developed diabetes during pregnant circumstances you have higher risk. >> people who have diabetes can lose weight and get off their medications is that correct true, can you get off these medications and reverse. >> such a great point. it is true. so if we can lose even 10 pounds, or 5% of our weight, we have a decreased risk every getting diabetes, or i had patients get off medication when is they've lot weight and become more active. really, being active and losing weight is more powerful than medication. so that's real important. other things we can do, there is actually a sweet spot for sleep. we need between six to eight hours of sleep a night. anything more or less our blood sugar levels are higher, and the biggest thing we need to get screened. third of americans don't know they have diabetes. so please see your doctor, get a blood test. >> what are the symptoms? is there something that will be clear that you may be at risk of having this? >> you raised great point. a lot of times people don't have symptoms. and the only time we know is when they come up and get blood test. if you do, you may have unexplained headaches or blurry vision, which is
