"eyewitness news" reporter walt hunter is live at police headquarters with the very latest now, walt. >> reporter: chris, police say it was a moment that few of us could comprehend, officer steven car show me your hand and that suspect firing, bullet skimming his head, creating a wound that only required a couple of stitches. in the eyes of officers it was almost a miracle the suspect hen shot dead and there are growing questions about why that suspect a career criminal was paroled, and was on the street, with a gun. for officer steven carpalsky father of a three-year old baby girl survival was a matter of centimeter, bullet fired from this gun police say

as we told you a woman has been pulled from the water and rushed to the hospital, after her suv went into the cobbs creek. >> let get to "eyewitness news" reporter todd quinones live at the scene. it sound like you have been able to talk to some witnesses there, todd. >> reporter: diana, it was quite the scene that unfolded here this afternoon. first of all, let me show you behind me eyewitnesses say a woman was driving this white suv heading north up cobbs creek parkway at around 3:30 this afternoon when for some unknown reason, she veered off into these woods here and into the cobbs creek just behind us here. that suv flipped over and was submerged in water and then amazingly a man by the name of marsdell porch who happened to be in the area on his lunch break, saw the chaos, and the man who has no medical training whatsoever. he just copied what he saw on tv and he jumped in to action.

>> i went over there to see what was going on and vehicle was under water. she had stopped breathing. we broke the window. her seat belt was on so we cut seat belt off, got her out of the car, and we started to give her cpr. we didn't know what we were doing but we tried our best. then we gave up. as we walked away she started breathing. >> reporter: now that woman was rushed to hup where right now she's listed in guarded condition, and we're also being told that four police officers with the 12th district also help pull would the man out of her suv and pulling her to safety but again, quite a here owing afternoon, that unfolded here in west philadelphia today but for good work of marsdell porch who is being credited by eyewitnesses and police officers, they believe that he may have just saved this woman's life. reporting live from west philadelphia, todd quinones, cbs-3 "eyewitness news". >> wow, thank you todd. tense moments for

residents in bridesberg after someone found explosives inside a home. chopper three over the the scene on the 4700 block of richmond street. police and the bomb squad were both called in this afternoon after the discovery of a grenade and a mortar round. they were not active and they were taken away. they posed no threat to the people in the neighborhood. a septa bus caught fire on penns landing, just before noon time today, this is eyewitness cam video from scott young, route 33 bus burst into flames while parked near front and chestnut streets, a septa mechanic was heading to the bus to do work on it. no passengers were injured and driver was taken to the hospital for observation. a car goes up in flames right on the schuylkill expressway, look at the plume of thick black smoke coming from it. it happened on i-76 westbound at the new henderson road off ram in king of prussia. about 20 minutes ago. crews have have have put out the fire and off ramp is still closed at this hour.

there is no word on the injuries there or the the cause. and one of the teens accused of assaulting a park range inner love park was arraigned today. this is 19 year-old curtis tanner, who is charged with assault, making terroristic threats and recklessly endangering another person. is there a 17 year-old who still faces charges as well in the videotaped beating of this ranger in love park. the ranger is recovering tonight from his injuries at home. the nation's attorney general eric holder will visit ferguson, missouri tomorrow, he is going there to learn more about the federal investigation in the shooting death of an unarmed teen by a police officer. as cbs reporter marley hall tells us the attorney jennies hoping, to ease the the tensions. >> demonstrators marched peacefully near the common center in ferguson, missouri. long time resident walter rice says he can't believe the violence that has gone through the st. louis suburbs. >> i never experienced nothing like this and i have seen

unrest around the world but i never thought it would be here in my hometown. >> reporter: peaceful protest followed another night of unrest, police say some in the crowd fired guns at officers. threw molotov cocktails and batteries. among those arrested are people from as far away as new york and california. the chaos first erupted ten days ago when an unarmed teenager name michael brown was shot and killed by police officer darren wilson this facebook photo shows officer wilson receiving an award earlier this year. many of the stores along this stretch near the center of the unrest have boarded up windows. the most are opened to take but owners say that business is down about 70 percent, since protests started. sunny die on put american flags on his looted store. >> i'm hoping to stay here. i have been here for 18 years. there is no reason i wouldn't stay. i love the community. >> reporter: attorney general eric holder traveled to

ferguson tomorrow to get an update on the federal investigation into brown's death. a grand jury could begin hearing evidence tomorrow to determine whether to bring charges against the officer. marley hall for cbs-3 "eyewitness news". well, short distance from ferguson, st. louis police shot and killed a man who came at them with the knife. eyewitnesses say that man was acting erratically just before the police were called. they don't believe this case is connected to the ferguson shooting or the protests there. pope frances is said to be deeply pained following the the deaths of three family members in a car crash tonight. the crash happened overnight in argentina in the side i of cordo va. the car driven by pope's nephew hit a truck. that nephew's two young sons and wife were killed. he is now in critical condition. hometown kids are just one win away from the world series finals in williamsport. taney dragons take to the field tomorrow night but the talk of the town today is

back on "eyewitness news" at 5:00 with dramatic pictures of a flooding rescue in arizona crews called in a chopper as they worked to evacuate people from this home near phoenix. heavy rains have pummeled that area, creating some raging rivers through the desert. eventually those waters did subside and people inside the home were able to make their way out on foot. kate is in tonight the for kathy, the weather has been so beautiful, can we keep it
