months after suffering a to recovery less than three months after suffering a devastating injury. captioning funded by cbs this is the "cbs morning news" for friday, august 22nd, 2014. good morning, good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. u.s. officials say the islamic militant group that killed journalist james foley is the most dangerous and imminent threat to the u.s. in years and the only way to defeat isis is to attack it in syria. >> they marry ideology, a tactical military prow well. they are tremendously funded. oh, this is beyond anything that we've seen. >> the u.s. launched a new round of airstrikes and opened a criminal investigation into foley's murder. for months before his beheading isis demanded $132.5 million

ransom. the militants are demanding the same amount for the other americans they hold but as bob ore reports, it's likely their tactics have changed. >> reporter: sources say there are at least three americans still being held by isis along with a small number of others, perhaps a dozen or so. but another rescue mission would be very difficult. that commando raid was a wake-up call because it's clear to everybody that the americans are willing to put some boots on the ground. officials believe isis is adjusting its operation. it's likely the remaining hostages are separated and being moved around on a regular basis. isis may be limiting its use of cell phones and other communications that makes the group much more difficult for intelligent to attract. to defeat isis you have to take out leaders, but timely and detailed intelligence would be needed to target a specific location with an airstrike or maybe even a ground raid. a good example of how it can work happened in 2006 when a

u.s. bombing mission killed the then leader of al qaeda in iraq. that was successful because the u.s. at the time had robust intelligence on the ground and thousands of troops also on the ground able to exploit daily intelligence leads. we tonight have anything close to that now in syria. sources say there's limited intelligence being collected on the ground. bob ore, cbs news, washington. this is a national day of mourning in malaysia. the first victims of mh-17 arrived in kuala lumpur this morning. it crashed on july 17th. 298 people were on board. none survived. the jet is believed to have been shot down by pro russian rebels. and the crew of a united airlines commuter jet reported smoke in the cockpit and made an emergency landing in indianapolis. it's believed the flight was headed from columbus, ohio, to chicago with 48 passengers on board. the twin engine jet touched down

without incident last night. the passengers were evacuated on the runway. no one was injured. it was another quiet night in ferguson, missouri, as tensions over the shooting death of michael brown appear to be cooling off. police report seven arrests but like the night before, there were fewer incidents, no shots fired and no molotov cocktails thrown and the national guard has gun withdrawing. omar villafranca is reporting. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. officers are returning from the protest zone and they did not have to fire any tear gas or rubber bullets tonight. members of the missouri national guard are starting to leave ferguson as things get back to normal. missouri state highway patrol captain ron johnson visited a community center hours ago and got a special gift from kids who have begun to play again. >> the kids gave me this sock puppet before i left. this is the signs of a

community. this is truly the community of ferguson. >> reporter: the number of demonstrators continued to grow even smaller after night fall, but their message of justice for michael brown is still loud and clear. it's a message shared by michael brown sr. >> my son had his hands up. that let the world know that he's been taught to understand and do the proper thing that he are told by police officers who he supposed to trust. >> reporter: since demonstrations began here august 9th, authorities have arrested more than 200 people. many of them would like to see officer darryn wilson prosecuted for shooting and killing the unarmed 18-year-old. on thursday protesters in more than a dozen cities showed their anger in a day of rage, some of them at the white house. in clayton, missouri, others delivered petitions demanding the removal of robert mccullough, the prosecutor overseeing the state's investigation because of his close ties to law enforcement. physical evidence, including shell casings and clothing, were

flown to the fbi lab in quantico, virginia, thursday, as part of the federal probe into brown's death. as you mentioned, seven people were arrested overnight for things like failing to disperse or just going and driving through a checkpoint. officers and members of this community hope that the calm continues. anne-marie? >> omar villafranca in ferguson. thank you. a california patient tested for ebola does not have the virus. the person had been quarantined at a california hospital. they had just returned from west africa. two americans infected with ebola were released from an atlanta hospital. doctors say they pose no public health risk and should make a complete recovery. we have the report. >> reporter: missionary dr. kent brantley thanked the many strangers who prayed for him and the medical team who cared for him. >> you treated me with expertise

yet with such tenderness and compassion. >> reporter: the cdc said brantley and his colleague nancy writebol who also contracted ebola in liberia, have no trace of it in their blood. writebol left the hospital on tuesday. doctors say the two are now immune to the strain of virus responsible for the current outbreak. >> i'm thrilled to be alive, to be well, and to be reunited with my family. >> reporter: brantley said his wife and children went back to the states on july 20th as the ebola outbreak in liberia woorsend. he then threw himself into his work which meant transferring sick patients to an isolation area. >> as i lay in my bed for the next nine days getting sicker and weaker each day, i prayed that god would help me be faithful even in my illness. >> reporter: though it's not known how they caught the virus, brantley said they followed infection protocol. cbs news says they may have had

monkey selfie. wendy gillette is at the new york stock exchange. >> good morning, anne-marie. ford is recalling more than 160,000 vehicles. the largest recall involves more than 159,000 focus st and escape vehicles from 2013 and 2014. a wiring problem could cause engines to hesitate or stall. a fourth straight monthly rise for existing home sales. in july home sales rose 2.4% to their highest level in almost a year. that's evidence the u.s. housing market is rebounding after a weak start in 2014. here on wall street investors will be watching janet yellen's peach today at the annual federal reserve conference in jackson, wyoming. the nasdaq was up 5 points.

mcdonnell will be back on the stand today. mcdonnell has been testifying at his trial about corruption charges. as chip reid reports, he's using his 2rub8d marriage as a defense. >> reporter: bob mcdonnell testified that his marriage was so bad as four years of governor that he put it on hold. in an emotional e-mail to his wife in september of 200011, he called her his soul mate but also said you tell me all the time how bad your life has been with me, i am so spiritually and mentally exhausted from being yelled at. mcdonnell told the court he thought his marriage was ending. that testimony is intended to support a key element of mcdonnell's defense as he and his wife couldn't have been engaged in a conspiracy to accept illegal gifts because they were barely on speaking terms. the two are charged with accepting more than $165,000 in gifts from businessman johnny williams and in return using

their officials as governor and first lady to promote his health supplement business by claiming to have a dysfunctional marriage, mcdonnell is also hoping to bolster his argument that his wife kept him in the dark about some of the gifts. for example, he said he had no idea williams had taken her on a $20,000 shopping spree in new york. she told me she had gotten a couple of dresses, he testified. he also said he was astounded to learn his wife borrowed $50,000 from williams. asked why he didn't tell her to return the check, mcdonnell said he wanted to avoid another fight. but mcdonnell admitted he did know about many other gifts from williams, including $15,000 to his daughter for her wedding reception and a vacation at williams' lake house that included the use of a ferrari, which mcdonnell said he drove because, quote, at some point i'm entitled to be normal. mcdonnell will continue to be questioned by his own attorney on friday, but you can bet that
