>> ♪ >> ♪ >> we start with breaking news at 6 o'clock and it's welcome news for so many. the interstate 495 bridge in delaware officially reopens to traffic in both directions. that is certainly a welcome sight for many commuters. good evening, i'm natasha brown. today's reopening comes a week or so ahead of schedule. the bridge was off limits in both directions from 12th

street to terminal avenue since early june. "eyewitness news" reporter noelle mclaren is live in wilmington with all the breaking details for us. noelle. >> reporter: well, delaware drivers can breathe a long awaited sigh of relief with the reopening of this bridge. now, deldot representatives tell us that these columns that you see over here surrounded by scaffolding have new support systems which make it safe enough for the reopening which just happened under three hours ago. the first traffic going in both directions is a welcome surprise for many who were expecting lanes to be closed for yet another week. both the north and southbound lanes have been closed most of the summer after a driver noticed four columns tilting just south of the christina river. engineers say soil stockpiling under the bridge may have been part of the problem. the bridge was deemed unsafe and shut down june 2nd. drivers got a bit of a break at the end of july when

southbound lanes were reopened. now their commute can return back to normal. now, if you recall, president obama used the broken i-495 bridge as a backdrop to speak about the need for infrastructure funding just last month so just an idea of how long and serious of a process this has been. we'll bring you more coming up on later editions of our newscast bullet for now we're live in wilmington, noelle mclaren cbs3 "eyewitness news." >> thank you very much. turning to our whether you saw noelle with her umbrella. it's been a gloomy start to the weekend. off and on showers have been the theme of the day today. meteorologist justin drabick joins us with more on what we can expect as we go throughout the evening. is it going to clear up justin. >> i do have better news. still tracking a batch of showers probably the next few hours in and around the city. one of the days that you just want to stay inside, maybe take a nap. certainly didn't feel like summer with temperatures in the 60's and 70's so there we

go, the bulk of the steadiest rain just north of the city right now coming into southern montgomery county and bucks county heading towards trenton. this is all moving south and east so eventually south jersey and potentially the shore point over the next hour or two could run into liar activity. you'll lead the umbrellas in upper providence. that continue to push southward. better conditions later tonight as this weak system pulls through. we'll see the sunshine returning for the second half weekend. upper 60's right now, 67 in reading and allentown, 69 at philadelphia international airport. little sun trying to break out in south jersey. we're still in the low 70's. northeast philadelphia checks in at 73 degrees, a cool 64 degrees temperature in quakertown. compare this to yesterday at this time, almost five to 10 degrees cooler than what we were so there's a big change with the clouds and showers. look a whole lot better for

sunday no matter where you are across the delaware valley. sunshine returns with a high near 80 for philadelphia. upper 70's at the shore. in the mountains beautiful conditions in the mid 70's. we'll talk about how long the sunshine lasts and warmer temperatures in the forecast as well. that's in a few minutes. natasha. >> justin thanks so much. we'll see you soon soon. today thousands of people marched in new york city to protest the death of eric garner the father of six died after a police officer allegedly put him in a fatal choke hold while placing hum under arrest. cbs news correspondent jericka duncan has all the details. >> what do we want? >> justice. >> what do we want. >> justice. protesters in staten island showed their grief and anger at the we will not go back march. >> we're out here supporting those who have lost their lives at the hands of ignorance. >> reporter: this cell phone video ignited outrage when a police officer used a choke hold to subdue eric garner. he died a an hour later. the new york city medical

examiner ruled his death a homicide. garner's wife broke down as protesters passed sidewalk where the incident happened. >> i'm hoping that this will, you know, bring justice for my son. that's all we're asking for is justice. >> reporter: protesters walked past the district attorney's office which has agreed to present the garner case to a grand jury for consideration of criminal charges. police choke holds are banned in new york city. >> people by the thousands really want to see police reform. this is not antipolice but it is antipolice violating the law. >> reporter: the nypd had a lamp presence at the rally. uniformed officers were joined by community police officers dressed in polo shirts and pants. authorities didn't want to appear threatening to a crowd determined to move forward. jericka duncan for cbs3 "eyewitness news." >> well, two rallies today in ferguson, missouri, this afternoon the saint louis

county naacp held a youth march. protesters marched to the site where michael brown was shot by officer darren wilson two weeks ago. earlier today supporters of officer wilson rallied in saint louis. the shooting of the unarmed 18-year-old has touched off clashes with police but overnight it was peaceful in ferguson for the third night in a row. here at home dozens gather d to pray for peace at love park in philadelphia. the family of alexis rivera were you among those calling for an end to the violence. he was shot a week and a half ago outside dell music center in strawberry mansion. he died the following day. his sister spoke to the crowd. >> whatever robbery they were trying to do, they robbed my brother's life. they robbed him from us. and i just don't understand. >> well, police are searching for this man wanted for questioning in connection with the murder. anyone with information about this case is asked to contact police right away.

and police do say that a mother shot her son during a violent confrontation in their germantown home. "eyewitness news" on the 5700 block of mcmann avenue. the 78-year-old mother told police that she shot her son in the stomach after he broke into her bedroom and pointed a gun at her and she also says that he appeared drunk and threatened to strangle her. police say they will now charge the son with aggravated assault. a jury convicts a bensalem teen in the rapes and sexual assaults and 10 girls. 19-year-old joshua benson could be sentence d to more than 80 years behind bars. prosecutors say benson sexually assaulted girls ages 14 to 17 between 2011 and 2013. the defense argued the sex acts were consentual but the jury disagreed. and the search is under way for a bold shoplifter in maple shade. a man was caught here on camera stealing 19 packs of red bull energy drink from the cvs store on route 73. the suspect as you can see wearing a red phillies cap,

whiter north face t-shirt and gray khaki shorts, if you recognize this man, please contact police right away. college students meantime they're beginning to move into their dorms all across the region. today it was move-in day for freshmen and transfer students at saint joseph's university in philadelphia. it was a little wet out there but students were still excite d to start their college careers. upperclassmen move in tomorrow. and the city of philadelphia will officially welcome home the taney dragons at love park tomorrow. mo'ne davis and her teammates are expected to arrive from williamsport about noon. a loss to chicago thursday night eliminated the dragons from the little league world series but it's okay. it was still a great run for this team and this city is so very proud of all of them. stay with us, everyone. still ahead on "eyewitness news," the violence escalates in iraq. multiple bombings leave dozens dead. we've got the latest on the growing crisis. plus, caught on video.

>> got a story you would like us to investigate? e-mail your ideas to i-team at cbs3.com. >> well, in iraq, bombings in three cities leave at least 30 people dead as cbs correspondent bigad shaban records the blasts come a day after a large scale attack at a mosque. >> reporter: emergency vehicles rushed to a commercial area in the northern iraq city of kirkuk after three bombs exploded saturday. at least 19 people were killed and 100 others injured. firefighters worked to put out large fires after the explosions. kurdish officials say the bombs targeted buildings which were used as lookout points. no one has taken responsibility. bombings in kirkuk baghdad and urbil came one day after an attack against a sunni mosque

heightened sectarian tensions. more than 60 people were killed. bigad shaban for cbs3 "eyewitness news." >> smoke from rocket launches pour out over the gaza skyline and dramatic video as witnesses say an israeli air strike collapse add 12 story apartment tower in central gaza city. this blast sent a huge ball of fire an black cloud of smoke into the air. the explosion shook neighboring buildings as well. at least 10 people including four kids were wounded. caught on video a-bystander captures the moment an unmanned space-x rocket explodes. this happened at the space-x facility in mcgreg sore texas. the company said the rocket blew itself up after a malfunction was detector during a test. space-x said it never went off course none one was injured. the faa was on site during that zest. and we are all used to parking signs here in philadelphia, right? well, people try their best to obey them and avoid getting a ticket. take a look at this particular

sign in culver city, california. it stands 15 feet tall. each sign a different rule. the signs sit outside of an elementary school and were meant to clarify a new drop-off and pickup procedure when classes resume but neighbors, they find it simply confusing. >> you have an arrow going north, an arrow going south. where are the east and west arrows? it's crazy in the mornings. and these signs are extremely funny. >> it is a lot of them. it didn't take long for city officials to act on this as quickly as those signs went up half of them came down. the new rules will still launch, though, when kids go back to school but getting the word out will take a different route. all right, justin, i've got to head down to penn's landing. there's a gospel concert going on down there later. should i take the umbrella. >> yeah, you're going need it. >> that's the biggest thing. everybody if you're coming out bring the umbrella, right. >> exactly. still tracking showers around the city.

obviously a gloomy day today. a little easier come into work because of the lousy weather but obviously we do need the rain so that's a good thing. the one spot where we don't have the rain right now is at the shore. here's a live look at margate. nobody really hanging out on the beach. there's somebody walking. a little sun trying to break out in south jersey but those clouds will thicken up again. there will be a chance for maybe a couple light rain showers as we head later on into the evening. there's the bulk of rain just to the north and west across areas of northern delaware county, montgomery into bucks county, even some heavier rain southeastern bucks county. this will all be heading into new jersey so again that could impact the shore points later on tonight. look farther north and west, though. notice the clouds start too long break up so that's signs of improving conditions that will continue to move in through the overnight. nice area of high pressure moving in out of the great lakes will bring back the sunshine for the second half of the weekend. so, now until about 8, 9 o'clock or so we'll be under the gun for some light rain shower activity. look at the temperatures. much cooler with the clouds. 60's and low 70's.

very far weigh from that average high. still we slob in the mid 80's. winds are also off the ocean out of the east and northeast so that's keeping our temperatures below average as well and that trend will continue into sunday. so even though we're going to have the sunshine back, highs on sunday struggle to get to that 80-degree mark so still a little bit cooler than average but at least we have the sunshine out, very low humidity, beautiful conditions to be outside on sunday and then we set up to see a nice dry spell coming up in our forecast. high pressure sits right on top us for monday into tuesday, abundant sunshine, temperatures in the lower to mid 80's with very low humidity and then by the middle of next week, looks like we start to crank some of that heat back up, temperatures return above average. so, now through about 9 o'clock or so, again some scattered showers, it's going to be on the light side. we'll start -- they'll start to dissipate. as we head through the overnight clouds start to break up a little bit. you'll wake up sunday morning seeing some sunshine along with dry conditions, looking good for sunday afternoon, mostly sunny skies return. very quiet conditions all across the delaware valley

into next week. monday mostly sunny skies. that trend will continue into tuesday. even wednesday and thursday. and then we'll just bring those temperatures up a little bit. we are watching the tropics as it is beginning to fire up. typical as we head towards late august and the labor day weekend. this is newly formed tropical depression number four. it's still south and east of the bahamas but it will impact it with very heavy rains over the next couple days, it's moving off to the north and west. right now winds at 35 miles per hour, tropical depression. it is forecast to strengthen into a tropical storm and possibly a category one hurricane early next week and the official track takes it to the northwest, keeps it off the coast of the u.s. and then eventually a lot of the models bring it back out to sea. so that would be good news but certainly we could be dealing with higher surf especially up towards the outer banks early next week. so, keep that in mind if you are doing some traveling down that way. back home, though, temperatures tomorrow upper 70's for highs with plenty of

sunshine into monday back into the lower 80's. and still that is below average for this time of year. tonight still some showers around early. otherwise partly cloudy overnight, low 63 degrees. a great looking sunday, pleasant, mostly sunny with a high near 80 degrees. and it will be a great day to head to the shore. a lot of sunshine, mostly sunny. little bit on the breezy side. winds could get up to about 25 miles per hour so still a moderate threat for rip currents. ocean water is comfortable but always remember to swim when a lifeguard is on cute tomorrow. here's the extended forecast. look at all that sunshine returning. sunday, monday, tuesday, wednesday, thursday. temperatures though on the rise. we're back into the mid to upper 80's the middle of next week. it's possible we make a run at 90 degrees especially next wednesday and thursday and then by the end of next week, could see a couple of showers and thunderstorms later friday into the start of next weekend. >> all right. not too bad, though. >> sure. >> get through today. >> you got it. >> thank you, justin. appreciate it. please lee has got sports. >> eagles get back to work getting ready for thursday's final preseason game against the jets. all the starters expected to

sit this one out. matt barclay will get the start behind center. the big story from camp today the team answers nounsing its first 14 cuts to the roster. few names on the list linebacker jake knot, defensive end alejandro villanueva, the army sergeant who served in afghanistan. the cuts come days before tuesday's deadline to get that roster down to 75. >> felt it wasn't beneficial to have them practice saturday, sunday, monday and tuesday and cut them on tuesday. give them a chance to see if they can catch on with somebody else. >> also cut from the roster kicker terry spear not a big surprise but the eagles have major question mark at that position. alexander is still struggling with accuracy missing a 31-yard shot in the third quarter. then there's rookie cody parkey acquired earlier this

week. >> he have would make a decision. instead of us sitting there and saying i don't know how i can do this, i don't know how i can do that, we know how many times we got a chance to get out on the practice field which is now until thursday night. then we have one more game with officials under the lights where we get a chance to play and that's it. then we'll have to make a decision. >> jaguars announcing henning will be their starting quarterback in week one against the eagles. that game two weeks from tomorrow. sad news to report about the phillies. earlier today the front office announced the death of team owner sally buck. she's been part that of ownership group since 1981. meanwhile the team will try to make it two in a row against the cardinals. tonight kyle kendrick having more trouble in the first inning of game one allowing three batters to cross the plate. fightans rally in the third. they put up four unanswered runs, the go ahead run would come off a miscue by the saint louis defense. that then allows the runner to advance. ryan howard comes on home. from there the bullpen shut things down. no hits aloud by beekman.

ben revere went three for four at the plate. good production from the center field areas -- fielder as of late. >> he's got a good approach with bacterialing balls up consistently. he's using the holes. he's using up the middle very well. he's also going to left field. but he's a tough strikeout so he does put the bat on the ball but he's just really darrelling them up keeping the ball out of the air and he's finding the holes. >> there's been a lost talk about the taney dragons but the philadelphia area is celebrating another local tomorrow. last night the broomall newtown 13 prep squad won the national title in the babe ruth world series in glen allen, virginia, so congratulations to them. and finally, it's official. the sixers pulled the trigger on a three-team deal today that sends thad young to minnesota. in return the sixers get two players with expiring contracts an first rounds draft pick in 2015. minnesota also gets andrew wiggins and anthony bennett
