shining stars after a whirlwind trip to the little league world series, the taney dragons return to a cheering an very proud city back home. good evening everyone, i'm natasha brown. thanks for joining us. the taney dragons may not have won it all in williamsport but they sure are winners in the eyes of so many here in philadelphia and also all around the country. "eyewitness news" reporter steve patterson was at today's welcome home party. he joins us now in south philadelphia. what a celebration. what a welcome home, steve. >> reporter: amazing. so many of you at home must be thinking well the little league world series is over, the taney fever must be over. it's about go international. the taney dragons are on the other side of the marion anderson rec center about to load a bus for new york for more national appearances and talk shows but today, today was all about honoring their add according to fans here in philadelphia. if you were a tourist in philadelphia today you may have thought the rolling stones were playing love park.

you'd be wrong. welcome to lonely place in the world where there's nothing weird about hundreds of adults swarming a bus for middle school kids. the taney dragons were back in town and if you thought taney fever was over sunday proved we've just moved into a new phase. >> let us more officially welcome back the which would champion taney dragons. >> reporter: for the last two weeks, taney exploding onto the world stage during the little league world series taking down teams in dramatic fashion crafting a savvy multicultural image of unity and hard work led by mo'ne davis who by the way is the current national cover of sports illustrated. [cheers and applause] >> reporter: sunday mo'ne and rest of the team were showered with love as they shared their experiences on the road. as for the pressure mo'ne isn't great handling it on the field she's a natural leader

and role model. >> she's very humble. she's well grounded. she'll be okay. >> reporter: with all the hoopla it's tough to remember sometimes these are kids. outfielder kai cummings offered insight after seeing family for the first time in weeks. >> one way to wake up from a three hour bus ride. it was really into toys see people who i haven't seen and just people who are supporting everything that we've done all the way. >> reporter: in the end taney didn't win the little league world series, they didn't even come in second butter for the first team in the city's history to make a run they made eight run that stood for something. and when you stand for something in philadelphia, you might as well be a champion. >> we are proud of you. [cheers and applause] >> reporter: and so also at that pep rally the mayor announced more taney fever on wednesday, a parade of champions through philadelphia. the details of which we're hearing from sources will come out at some point tomorrow. for now, we're live in south philadelphia, i'm steve patterson, cbs3 "eyewitness

news." >> we just can't get fluff of that team. thank you so much, steve. we appreciate that. learn more about celebrations honoring the taney dragons on our web site, cbsphilly.com. and now in other news the largest earthquake to rock the san francisco bay area in 25 years sends scores of people to hospitals ignited fires damaged historic buildings and knocked out power to thousands in california's wine country. tonight we know at least three people are critically injured and the governor has declared a state of emergency. the 6.0 magnitude earthquake struck at about 3:20 a.m. about 6 miles from the city of napa. cbs correspondent bigad shaban has more on the damage left behind. >> reporter: the 6.1 magnitude earthquake struck hardest near napa, california. downtown several historic buildings were damaged. and area vineyards wine bottles crashed to the floor. the quake buckled roads, at the height cut off power to 10s of thousands of home.

emergency whistles cents guests evacuating from this napa hotel. shortly after the shaking began around 3:30 in the morning. >> i thought it was the end of the world. it started out rolling and then it just shook violently and i actually gave out a scream and i thought this is it. >> reporter: while no one was killed at least 120 people were treated at a local hospital. most suffered bumps, bruises and cuts. >> the doors came off the hinges. >> reporter: hugo says his clothing and antique shop in downtown napa valley was likely left with at least $15,000 in damage. >> most things off from the wall, cabinets fell over. anything that was in the window, all this stuff that was wood was broken. >> reporter: the earthquake sparked six fires including one at this mobile home park. the broken water main left fire crews without water to battle the flames. this man watched his

neighbor's house burn to the ground. >> like a bomb exploded. >> reporter: residents are being warned to brace for aftershocks. bigad shaban for cbs3 "eyewitness news." >> a cbs3 viewer was visiting the napa valley when the earthquake hit. she told us over the phone that the entire house shook. >> the beds were shaking, the house was shaking. the sound was deafening. it was definitely terrifying. it felt like it was -- like it lasted probably 20 seconds at most. >> patty adds that transformers were blowing all over the place and the entire neighborhood was pitch black. well, frightening moments out there but we've had nothing but a beautiful day here want a difference a day can make. we're wrapping up the weekend with picture perfect weather after a dreary saturday. "eyewitness news" here at the italian market. crowds were taking advantage of the sunny day to get some shopping in.

what's in store as we get ready for the work week. meteorologist justin drabick is live on the cbs3 sky death of he's got the first look at the forecast. how is it looking justin. >> natasha, looking really nice if you like sunshine and warmer temperatures. not a bad way to finish the weekend today as finally the skies have cleared out. we got some sunshine and kept the conditions nice and drive. high temperatures still a couple degrees below average across the region. 83 is what we made to it at philadelphia international airport. a comfortable 74 in mount pocono. low 80's in reading and trenton new jersey. here's where we are right now. very nice outside with a few clouds, upper 70's for most locations. cooler near the show as we have that stronger wind off the ocean so that's keeping the coastal temperatures a little bit cooler in the lower 70's. 75 in quakertown as well as mount holly, new jersey. 78 degrees in northeast philadelphia. compare these temperatures to yesterday at this time we're about 10 to 13 degrees warmer for the inland spots. so, changing up the air mass that's what the sunshine does this time of year and we'll see plenty of sun over the

next couple days. clouds will pass through over the next few hours. they'll diminish overnight. that sets the stage for a mostly sunny sky for monday. pleasant in philadelphia, upper 70's both at the shore and the poconos. warmer temperatures for the middle of the week. i'll show you how hot we get coming up in the seven-day forecast in a few minutes. natasha. >> justin thanks. the hunts is on for a person who ran a man down and shot him in lawncrest. it unfolded on ramona avenue on saturday night. investigators say the victim was struck by a black honda civic. someone got out of the car and shot the man in the chest and stomach. the car was later found abandoned and on fire. still unclear what prompted a double homicide in the northeast. two women were shot in the head and prone pronounced dead saturday night inside their home on the 2700 block of vista street. the 54 year old victim was discovered on the floor in an

upstairs bedroom. so far no arrests have been made in this case. also a bizarre incident involving a half naked man brings philadelphia police to columbus boulevard. it was first thought that the 57-year-old man had been attacked but an investigation revealed he had mixed alcohol way new medication and was banging on passing cars claiming to be the messiah. when he got to this black vehicle, the driver opened the door and he fell. no charges were filed. and check out these amazing photos here. a car crashes into the wildwood water works building and this is what it looked like at the pumping station on route 47 in middle township. police say the 25-year-old driver lost control of his car and slammed right through the front doors of the building. he wasn't seriously injured amazingly. officials say the 104 year old station remains opened and water service was not disrupted to customers in wildwood. stay with us. still ahead on "eyewitness news," an american held hostage in syria for the past

ly. >> got a story you would like us to investigate? e-mail your ideas to i-team at cbs3.com. >> happening now, u.s. officials say an american journalist held hostage in syria by an al-qaeda linked group has been released after nearly two years in captivity. peter theo curtis of massachusetts is reportedly now safe and outside of syria. the united nations says it helped with the handover to un peace keepers. curtis is now with american authorities and he's expected to be reunited with his family shortly. and dozens gathered at a memorial mass in new hampshire to remember slain american journalist james foley. the mass was held at a church in rochester, the town where foley grew un. his parents still live there. meantime britain's ambassador to the united states says police and spy agencies are close to identifying the english accented militant seen in this video showing the killing of foley. investigators are reportedly

using voice recognition software and other techniques to identify this man. authorities meantime they say rap mogul suge knight is expected to survive a shooting early this morning at a west hollywood nightclub. the los angeles county sheriff's department says the 49-year-old death row records founder was one of three people wounded in the crowded party on sunset boulevard. it was hosted by singer chris brown. no one was arrested. l.a. pd is also investigating three separate deadly shootings that happened within the span of a an hour. police say the attacks may be related. large crowds expected to attend the funeral service for michael brown in ferguson, missouri. it has been more than two weeks since the unarmed 18-year-old was shot and killed by a police officer. the shooting sparked days of racial unrest in ferguson. also revived long simmering questions about police treatment of minorities all around the country. a sea cooper is recovering after being attacked by a lion at the dallas zoo.

officials say the attack happened during a routine transfer of the lions into a restricted area out of public view. one of two zoo keepers accidentally left a door opened and that the when the worker was bitten and scratched by the lion. hawpe able to use pepper spray and get out of the area. the lion wasn't injured and will not be punished >> all right, well, we're talking about a nice finish to the weekend across the region as temperatures are holding into the upper 70's right now. hope you had a chance to enjoy the nice pleasant conditions today. that air mass very comfortable. you can keep those windows opened once again tonight. should see some widespread 50's in some of the suburbs. here we are, 79 degrees at the airport right now, upper 70's still in trenton. storm scan3 nice and quiet. notice some patchy clouds moving in from the north and east. that's that push of that cooler, drier air building in from the north and east so that's why temperatures again

today were a little bit on the below average side and it's pretty gusty winds near the shore and those ocean water temperatures again in the low to mid 70's so that keeps the coastal temperatures down. so here are the winds. right now still out of the east to northeast at about six to even 12 to 15 miles per hour. near the coast that again keeps the temperatures very pleasant but things will change as we we have that dip in the jet stream over us now but by the middle of this week that jet stream takes a ride to the north. that helps to bring back some of the heat so temperatures return above average so we're looking at mid to upper 80's coming in tuesdays and wednesday, possibly even making a run at 90 degrees. association here's the setup. that high pressure area situated right on top of us for tomorrow still keeps it nice and pleasant. humidity levels on the low side. lots of sunshine. temperatures back into the low to mid 80's. tuesday i think you'll start to feel the difference in the heat. we start to bring mid and upper 80's back into the delaware valley. the humidity level still not bad. just a little bit more humid. then i think wednesday will be our hottest day, upper 80's,

possibly 90 degrees and there's going to be a weak cold front that swings through here for thursday. that will knock the temperatures back down a few degrees but overall temperatures pretty much at or even above average as we finish off the month of august. let's time it out for you. not much happening overnight. those clouds will dissipate. good start to your monday morning commute into monday afternoon, mostly sunny conditions. same deal on tuesday. bright sunny skies and that trends until wednesday as well, so we're setting up to see a pretty good stretch of some dry weather in our forecast. this is tropical storm cristobal. winds at 45 miles per hour impacting southeastern bahamas right now moving pretty slow to the north at 8 miles per hour. there's the official track. takes it to the north, intensifying it into a category one hurricane that kicks back out toughie. doing splits here, field goal the uprights. this will bring recover surf especially outer banks for the upcoming weekend. delaware beaches and the jersey shore probably by the

middle to latter half of the up coming week. always make sure the lifeguards are around and obey the rules. 82 degrees for afternoon highs for many spots. for the inland areas on tuesday -- or monday into tuesday we go, even warmer, mid and upper 80's so that's the trend to look forward to this week. comfortable tonight, a few clouds, 63 for center city. some suburbs down into the 50's. warmer day tomorrow, mostly sunny skies. here in the city 84 degrees. another nice looking beach day with plenty of sunshine at the jersey shore, upper 70's but still that wind is going to be a bit gusty out of the northeast at 15 to 20 miles per hour. so, ocean is going to be chopped up a little bit so we'll keep the threat moderate for the rip currents. here's the extended forecast. upper 80's getting close to 90 on wednesday. a lot of sunshine through the end of the week. it looks like next weekend, that's our best chance for a shower or thunderstorm. i know it's labor day weekend but it's not going to be an a all day washout. no need to cancel the barbecue plans. >> thanks justin. lesley has sports highlights. >> after a tough loss last

night phillies get one more chance to win their first back to back series since april. the game three tie breaker with the cardinals this afternoon at the bank and the phillies bats putting up plenty of hits. chase utley at the plate revere on second sends a liner to second. revere heads for home and the phillies are up one-nothing. pressure on from there. bottom of the thi phils up five-nothing. j. roll with a home run to extend that lead even more. phils easily take this one, the final score seven-one and a good outing for jerome williams in his third start for the team. he would pitch eight innings five strikeouts. skipper ryne sandberg is happy with the new addition. >> working real well with both catchers and he's working good with the mitt. he's a command guy hitting his spot and then mixes speeds as

you go along through the lineups but he was outstanding and just a big lift on a day given our bullpen break after yesterday. >> and the phillies will pay special tribute to the taney dragons later this week. the entire team will participate in a ceremony before wednesday night's game against the nationals. some of the proceeds from ticket sales will benefit the taney little league. meanwhile, jackie robinson reds from chicago, the team that knocked the dragons out of the little league world series playing in a championship game. south korea wins this one, eight to four. well, another dave practice at the novacare complex today. the eagles still making adjustments two weeks left until the start of the regular season and a big concern coming into camp has been the pass rush. improvements need to be made but in the first three preseason games the defense has proved that they can get to the quarterback at key times. >> so, when you study the tape over and over again you see
