>> from the cbs broadcast center in philadelphia this is cbs-3 "eyewitness news". >> right now at 11:00 o'clock, a state of emergency in californ california's wine country after a strong earthquake rattles the region. tonight the full extent of the damage is still being assessed. good evening, i'm natasha brown much this is the strongest earthquake to hit northern california in 25 years. here is the very latest. at least 175 people were injur injured. six seriously including one child who was left in critical

condition by falling debris. as many as 100 homes have been deemed uninhabitable. the magnitude sick .0 quake center the in the nappa cun tee town of american canyon but it was felt across the region. cbs news correspondent withed in shaban as march on the aftermath from nappa. >> reporter: people in nappa spent sunday sweeping and asse assessing the damage the strong earthquake left behind. much of downtown effecte effect. at least three historic buildings sudden major damage including this courthouse. hotel guests were vac witnessed soon after the shaking began. just before 3:30am. the earthquake snapped gas lines and broke 60 water mains. fire crews arrived at this burning mobile home park to find no water. >> it's a real tragedy for those involved but it could have been a lot worse. >> reporter: four homes were destroyed. about 100 more in the area were damaged. many are stim without electricity. transportation says state

highways and bridges are open and save for travel. >> the damage caused by the earthquake sent 175 people to local hospitals. most suffered bumps, bruises and cuts. but nobody was killed. thomas bore jess has no earthquake insurance and about $100,000 worth of damage at his home and business. >> i have no idea how i'm going to recover from this. i have no idea. >> reporter: several wineries also reported damage which couldn't have come at a worse time. this harvest season in the region. >> please get out of the street. >> reporter: residents are being warned to stay clear of damaged buildings ton brace for after shocks. bigad shaban for cbs-3 "eyewitness news". >> a cbs-3 viewer was visiting the napa valley when this earthquake hit. patti hassan told us over the phone that the entire house shook. >> the beds were shaking. the house was shaking. the sound was deafening. it was absolutely terrifying for -- it felt like it was --

probably lasted 20 seconds at most. >> patti adds that transformers were blowing all over the place and the entire neighborhood was pitch black. now todays quake is the largest to shake the bay area since 1989. that's when a 6.9 earthquake interrupted the world series game between the san francisco giants and the oakland a's. the earthquake buckled highways and caused 63 deaths. more than 3700 injuries. and an estimated sick billion dollars in property damage. and it was three years ago this weekend, actual earthquake rattled the east coast surprisingly so. meteorologist justin drabick has more on that. justin you were right here in the studio when that happened. >> that's right, natasha three years ago from yesterday i was in the studio the lights were shaking. we could feel the floor shaking. pretty impressive it was the mineral virginia earthquake if you can remember that, i'm sure you felt it around the delaware valley higher up in the building. let's compare these two quakes.

there's a difference between east coast quakes and west coast quakes. magnitude of the mineral virginia quake was 5.8 and depth was very shallow the 3.7 miles down but felt up and down the east coast all the way to canada all the way south into georgia. now, here on the east coast the earth's crust is much denser. so the size mick waves are able to travel farther. different out on the west coast. really similar. 6.0 but the depth much deeper at 7 miles down and they felt this only 45 miles out from that the center so big difference there again the reason across the west coast the size mick waves travel much less because those quakes are a lot farther down into the ground much big difference there between east coast versus the west coast earthquakes. temperature wise our weather looks very nice and comfortable. mid to upper 60s this hour. lower 60s near the shore. some suburbs already at 63 in quakequakertown and doylestown.

a neighborhood in mourning. >> i hope, you know, i just want to rest in peace. >> saturday evening family and friends rushed to vista police to certain their loved ones were gone. dolly heff advance shot once in the head and 59 year old ruby thomas was found upstairs on bedroom floor also shot once in the head both were pronounced dead at the scene. >> my sister she never bother add soul. she come and clean your house, do anything in the world just to get by. >> the homeless or whoever needed, she helped them. took them in. helped them as much as she could. they were living with her, she was helping her. >> by all accounts the 67 year old homeowners was everyone's grant mother on the block feeding and helping anyone in need no questions asked. >> with the dog being down the basement i wish he was upstairs.

abandoned and on fire. >> and trenton police announce an arrest day after releasing this photo of a police impersonator. 54 year old garcia has now been charged with aggravate the sexual assault, kidnapping, robbery and related crimes. police allege he posed as a police officer showed radio an handgun and assault add foe mail store clerk on south broad street yesterday at noon. he's currently being held on 500,000 dollars bail. also a bizarre incident involving a half naked man brings philadelphia police to columbus boulevard. it was first thought that the 57 year old man was attacked but an investigation revealed he had mixed alcohol with new medication and was banging on passing cars claiming to be the messiah when he got to this black order the driver opened the door and he fell. no charges filed. >> check out these amazing photos here. a car crash noose the wildwood water works building and this is

>> u.s. officials say an american journalist held hostage in syria by an al-qaida linked group has been released after nearly two years in captivity. peter curtis of massachusetts is reportedly now safe and outside of syria. the united nations helped with this handover to un peacekeepe peacekeepers. curtis is now with american authorities. he's expected to be reunited with his family very soon. and dozens gathered memorial mass in new hampshire to remember slain american journalist james folly. the service was held at a church in rochester. the town where foley grew up. his parents still live there. meantime britain's ambassador to the united states says police and spy agencies are very close to identifying the english act zenned militant scene in this

department says the 49 year old death row records founder was one of three people wounded in the crowded party on sunset boulevard. it was hosted by singer chris brown. lapd is also now investigating three separate deadly shootings that happened within the span of an hour. police say these attacks may be related. >> and michael brown's father is asking for a day of silence as he lays his son to rest. the funeral for 18 year old michael brown is scheduled for tomorrow morning and huge crowds are expected. it has been more than two weeks now since the unarmed teenager was shot and killed by a police officer in ferguson. the shooting sparked days of racial unrest and pre tests all throughout the country. >> a zookeeper is recovering after being attacked by a lion at the dallas zoo. officials say this attack happened during a routine transfer of the lions into a restricted area out of the public's view. one of two zookeepers accident accidentally left the door of an

grandchildren's college education. very nice. i don't know how you sleep at all after that. >> i would would be calling everybody. hello! >> all right. justin, i guess summer is still here. >> still here. >> we'll feel it this week. yeah, last week of august, crank up the heat a little bit. the humidity won't be that badge pleasant forecast coming up this weekend look we'll be storm free through much of the work week. very nice outside right now. safe couple buck on the air-conditioning bill. open up the windows the comfortable air mass it's dry, low humidity, temperatures little before the on the cooler side. live look right now clear skies as we check out the ben franklin bridge. 67 degrees the official temperature at the airport. as well as wilmington. 57 in mount pocono. warmer near the shore but still nice 68 degrees in wildwood, new jersey, capital city of delaware checking in at 68. dew point temperatures low for summertime. we're in the 50s to around 60 degrees indicating a dry air mass, low humidity.

we'll see similar numbers like this again tomorrow. so enjoy it. easterly winds continue so that keeps our temperatures a little bit cooler than average had it all weekend long. looks like tomorrow we start to bring back some of the heat. we get close to the average looks like the inland spots will make it into the mid 80s that easterly wind continues jet stream took a dive southward over the weekend. cool flow coming out of the north to northeast. this is going to start to change as we head towards tuesday and wednesday. it ridges back to the north. southerly winds will return with sunshine around temperatures return above average upper 80s maybe 190 degrees by the middle of the week. also, that big ridge in the jet stream, keeps us dry. protects us from any big storm systems just a few clouds may stream in from time to time over the next self days but this is how storm scan3 will look pretty much through the upcoming week. high pressure dominating our weather. shifts farther northeast on monday. still very pleasant sunshine. low to mid 80s for high temperatures. that high starts to move farther to the northeast tuesday.

so we bring back that southerly wind. mid to upper 80s for highs then wednesday getting close to 90. some of the warmer spots. but then weak cold front that comes through later wednesday night, thursday morning. looks lockout comes through dry. knocks the temperatures back a few more degrees for end of the week. future weather model nice start to the work week a lot of sunshine for your morning commute into the afternoon. a bun dan sunshine for tuesday and wednesday and enjoy it if you have outdoor plans it look great. all across the delaware valley. now, we are tracking the tropics tropical stamp cristobal winds at 45 miles per hour still hanging out near the southeastern bahamas only moving at 5 miles per hour to the north but the official track keeps ita with from the east cove. heads it north and eventually northeast. could intensify into a category one hurricane. it splits between the east coast and we are mud today. starting wednesday we'll start to see some stronger rip currents at the jersey shore and delaware beaches and higher swells keep that in mind if you

have plans to hit beach. comfortable overnight. a few clouds. 63 for center city. many suburbs will be down into the 50s. we do rebound nicely tomorrow afternoon. a lot of sunshine. 84 degrees pleasant with low humidity. and here is that that shore forecast. nice on the beach with plenty of sunshine 78 but the winds kicks up out of the northeast 15 to 20 miles an hour. a high risk for rip currents tomorrow. so probably want to just hang out on the beach enjoy the nice weather. ocean water on the 74. extended forecast upper 80s for tuesday and wednesday with lots of sunshine. thursday back down to 86 degrees. looks like as we head towards labor day weekend, slightly cooler, low 80s we could see a scattered shower or storm saturday and sunday. but it look like those chances pretty much small. i wouldn't go cancel outdoor plans at this point. >> that's good to hear. pleasant august. not bad at all. good way to finish it off. >> thank you very much. i agree. >> lesley what's going on with the eagles? >> inching closer and close sr. to eagles regular season two weeks away. latest injury report on some of
