if you look behind me the sign points the way to the local market, the opera, the train station. this is the heart of downtown napa and this morning it's devastated. the destruction is clear as residents and businesses clean updo downtown napa. the strongest earthquake to hit napa in a quarter of a century rippled through sunday morning. >> it was bouncing around like we were on a roller-coaster ride from hell. >> the tremors ruptured gas lines. city officials have determined at least 33 buildings are now un uninhabitable. >> i called 911. i said you guys have to come of. my house may fall over right now. >> the quake struck the heart of california's wine country.

the violent shaking cracked dozens of tanks and barrels and wine bottles sending hundreds down the drain. >> it's very scary because it's the time of inventory. you don't turn it around overnight. >> the exact cost of damage to napa is unclear but many estimate they lost hundreds of thousands of dollars. in spite of all the damage here, the consensus among the people in this tight-knit community, they're very grateful things weren't worse. >> a silver lining there. thank you. and about 230 miles north of napa, a wildfire is threatening hundreds of homes. firefighters are battling a fire near weaverville, which is near the border of oregon. 150 homes were evacuated sunday. about 520 homes and businesses are in danger. one square mile has burned.

high winds caused it to spread quickly. and this morning tropical storm cristobal is hitting the bahamas with sustained winds of 130 miles an hour. it's heading north. eric fisher of our boston station wbz has the latest on the storm's path. >> the tropics veryive right now. here's the latest on chris toe boll. it's to the north of the bahamas. it brings heavy rain. still a bit of a ragged storm. the good news there's circulation. this is the official forecast tracked from the hurricane center, keeping i out to sea but moving very slowly. something we'll have to watch close enough to the seaboard. we should be watching this over the next couple of days. marie, a textbook monster. some of those wave heights over 40 feet near the center and 10 to 20-foot waves will make their way to southern california arriving on tuesday. another big story for today, it is the heat.

it keeps on going. major heat index values of 100, 110 this the middle of the country, also up toward chicago. it feels very much like summer when we're at the tail end of august. i'm eric fisher for cbs news. michael brown is being buried today. brown, an unarmed black teenager was shot to death by a white policeman august 9th in a st. louis suburb. the shooting set off days of unrest. at a peace rally in st. louis yesterday, his father plead for a day of silence. >> all i want is peace while my son is being laid to rest. can you please, please take a day of silence so i can -- so we can lay our son to rest. please. that's all i ask. >> the parents of trayvon martin also spoke calling for stronger family ties and better education. thousands are expected to attend

brown's funeral. this morning an american journalist held hostage in syria is free -- or for two years, rather, is now free. peter theo curtis was released sunday to u.n. officials. he was being held by an al qaeda group called the nursa frornt. according to "the new york times," no ransom was paid. news of his release came nearly a week after james foley's video surfac surfaced. foley's friends and family gathered at a memorial service in his hometown in new hampshire. foley spent nearly two years in captivity. isis was demanding $132 million for his release and as juliana goldman reports a massive effort is under way to identify the man who killed foley. >> a senior administration official says u.s. and british

intelligence agencies have narrowed the list to fewer than ten suspects. officers are scrutinizing the foley execution video using sophisticated technology to identify the terrorist's voice. speaking to cnn's british ambassador to the u.s., he said he's doing all he can to identify the man on the video and is actively looking at other ways to help the iraqi government fight isis. >> and who themselves, we'd like to think, will want to become involved in pushing back against this terrific organization that threatens their way of life as well as ourselves. >> the killer's british accent sparked frenzy. some suspect this london rapper turned jihadist could be at the top of the list. they report that he went to syria last year and is the son of an egyptian born militant currently awaiting trial in the states for the 1998 embassy

bombings in africa. but they caution he's one of many. and while they're making progress working through names, they do not have a single suspect yet. former cia deputy director mike morell says finding foley's killer is important but the mission is larger than any one terrorist. >> it doesn't really matter who the executioner was. this was the group that killed james foley, and this order came from the very top of the group. >> fbi teams are heading to the uk to help with the search. a senior obama administration official tells cbs news they have to be careful. they want to find foley's killer but releasing too much information could put the remaining hostages in even greater danger. there was a two-pronged attack against sony by allegedly the same group. the first shut down sony's play station and sony entertainment

works. they're trying to get them back into service. they say nobody's personal information was taken. three years ago more than 377 million accounts were compromised. the second attack was on an airlines. the hackers were only going after one passenger, sony exec john smedley. fight 362 left sunday heading to san diego. it made an emergency landing in phoenix. the hackers tweeteded there was a bomb onboard. dogs searched the craft but found nothing. smedley confirmed that his flight was diverted for security reasons. no one was injured. coming up on the "morning news," bridge security breach. new york's famous brooklyn bridge is once again the target of a trespasser. we'll tell you why he was up there. this is the "cbs morning news." ♪

north. the fast food franchise is in talks by the doughnut chain tim hortons, which happened to be located canada. if the sale goes through, burger king will move its headquarters there and take advantage of its tax break. and summer's biggest blockbuster has been crowned. here's a look at today's forecast in some cities around the country. the run through the little league world series for chicago's jackie robinson west was a memorable one but the young men fell short of their ultimate goal. the u.s. champions lost in the final to south korea by a score of 8-4. it's south korea's third little league title but as elaine quijano reports, they inspired just their hometown. >> reporter: it's been 31 years since the jackie robinson west all-stars last made it to the little league world series. they made the most of the moment. they made it here by winning five games over ten days. including a come-from-behind win over hard-hitting las vegas. 620 miles away in chicago the

here's another look at this morning's top stories. recovery efforts are under way in california's wine country following a powerful earthquake yesterday morning. up to 100 buildings and homes were heavily damage. there are water main breaks and gas leaks. area wineries were hard hit. at least 12 people were hospitalized. and michael brown will be buried today. the black teenager was shot to death by a white police officer august 9th. the shooting sparked days of unrest. brown's father is asking for a day of silence. here in new york city there's a new attraction for sightseers. as jim axelrod reports the latest spectacle offers a splash and a spout. >> okay.

keep rolling southeast of us. >> reporter: four miles off new york city's rockaway beach, a 35-foot humpback whale is taking the collective breath way from a boat load of whale watchers. >> i think it's so cool that they just go up like that and then just go right back in. >> it's been the best kept secret in new york. >> reporter: researcher reports that humpback whales in and around knox and they're on the rise. >> like old whalists. high on the boat. >> reporter: his group has identified at least 252 whale sightings in the area. that's almost double two years ago. >> we think we're seeing more and more every year because of the return of the men hayden. that's their prey fish. >> reporter: the food supply and cleaner water is not only good news for rchers but photographers like arty ratlich
