. >> from the cbs-3 broadcast center in philadelphia. this is cbs-3 "eyewitness news". today is tuesday, august 26, good morning, i'm ukee washington. >> i'm erika von tiehl. too close for comfort, near tragedy when stray bullet narrowly miss as sleeping three year old. now the hunt is on for those responsible. we're live. definitely not what authorities have in minds what they tell people to drink responsibly. a local man accused of letting his eight year old nephew do the designated driving. >> with no leads and no where tolls turn, a mother now pleading for help after her son is run down on the side of the road. that story and more coming up. first, your forecast with katie. i feel like we're on this mountain climb. >> on our way, like the price is right.

syma chowdhry joins us from the darby police department with more. syma? >> that's right, family members are still in shock, and neighbors are outraged. that's because one of the safest places for a child is to be home sleeping. but that wasn't the case sunday, when a stray bullet made its way inside of an apartment, inches away from a toddler's crib. the shooting happened around 11:00 at night near the intersection of sixth and walnut streets. police describe the gunman as two men in their late teens, and early 20's. there were number of 9-millimeter shell casings at the scene, but the bullet traveled a block away, putting many people in harms way. luckily, for the toddler, he was saved by inches. but it goes through a wall that's about crash crib in there, rounds goes five, 6 inches above the top of the crib. that is child laying in the crib, three year old baby. the child stands up, the

child -- or if the bullets 10 inches lower, the child's hit. now, police say, there were a homicide in that area last week, in that same area where that shooting happened. now, they are look to go see if there is a possible connection. live in darby borough, syma chowdhry, cbs-3, "eyewitness news". >> syma, thank you. also, new this morning, fire damaged an apartment in northeast philadelphia. firefighters got the call to the grand meadows apartment, 3100 block of grant avenue overnight. no one was hurt. surrounding amounts were evacuated as a precaution, no word on how that fire started. 4:33, want to get to katie and hear more about this mini heatwave, not yet, sore. >> i won't qualify as heatwave, but remember for a heatwave you need three days of 09 or greater. so it will feel that way but it won't technically qualify, just because perception is reality when you are talking

but we do have accident along the bethlehem pike. route 309, in this stretch here, southbound, at line lexington road. so right out of the gate this morning, you want to use county line road to work your way around the crash. a water main break, this is left over from last night, route 47, right at high street, just off 322. so watch for some detours this morning. and some over night road work continues on the burlington bristol. they have one lane alternating for another half hour or so. otherwise, mass transit looking good. back to you. >> upper darby man facing charges after police say he was too drunk to drive and made his eight year old nephew the designated driver. >> fifty-eight year old clarence hairston is behind bars. officer noticed his car swerving saturday afternoon and it turned out he saw the man holding a beer with his feet on the pedals and that boy was sitting on his lap doing his best to steer. there was another child riding unrestrained in the back seat. police say hairston was babysitting. >> i would have rather seen

the kid take the car than drive away than have the 58 year old uncle pushing the gas and hitting the brake while the kids eight years old steering the car. the owner of the car was so drunk he couldn't get out of the car without assistance. >> hairston is charged with dui and related offenses. he remains in jail unable to post bail. also this morning, philadelphia police have charged brian boar with murder and related offenses, the frankford homeowner who told police he shot and killed a man he thought was trying to break into his pick up. the shooting happened late thursday night on the 4500 block of torresdale avenue. he claims he shot the man in self-defense. a desperate plea from the mother after hit-and-run victim in south jersey. she begging the driver to come forward. kevin was hit sunday night along sicklerville road near jarvis road. walking home from his job at pizza shop. he suffered a punctured lung, also multiple broken bones. he could be in the hospital for months, we're told, and

she said her son remembers being hit. >> he actually said that he was crossing the road and he felt as if a car was kind of speeding up to hit him. >> he called the pizza shop for help after the car hit him. someone there called 911. police have no surveillance video, no eyewitnesses, and no description of the vehicle. so they hope the public can help. the national transportation safety board is investigating the crash of a mosquito helicopt nerve cape may county. a county owned mosquito sprague chopper made hard landing a yard away from a home. the pilot and passengers were treated and released. police haves a warning for women who live and work in north philadelphia. a 19 jerold told police that she was indecently assaulted while walking to the bus stop in the 100 block of west dolphin street. the attack happened last thursday afternoon. then, early yesterday morning, about a mile away, a 26 year old woman reported that a man

morning, everyone, city of philadelphia will salute the taney dragons in their run in the little league world series with a parade. >> taney was the first philadelphia team to reach that series. parade will take place wednesday starting at 2:00 p.m. at 20th and market streets. that will go around city hall then down south broad, where it only gets first stop at the kimmel center for philly pop performance. parade will make second stop at broad and washington, for a mummers performance, and that's all before finishing at

fdr park. the phillies will also honor the dragons before wednesday night's game at citizens bank park. on your health watch this morning, medical marijuana laws may have unexpected benefit. new study from penn finds states that allow medical marijuana tends to have fewer painkiller related deaths. the rate of death for drugs like vicodin, percoset, oxycontin, also 25% lower in states that allow medical marijuana. new jersey and delaware allow some use of medical marijuana. pennsylvania does not. now, we showed this video yesterday. exclusive video. driver going the wrong way there on the left hands of your screen on 76. bad driving, right? now the tent annual allstate america's best drivers report in and philadelphia did not do well. philadelphia ranked dead last among americans largest cities in terms of car collision frequency. courted according to a report, a driver in philadelphia will get into a car crash roughly

we mention we have a hurricane on our hands, tropical satellite showing you cristobal right now. it is still far off to the south. other factors leading to the rip countries being for the last couple of days, but more than anything the next few will be because of that storm coming closer toward our coast. now it, won't strike the us coast, but will make its closest pass to our region in the next few days, high pressure though is the current story. we don't really have anything else going on right now, so we just heat one full sunshine here today, and touch more humidity, this is the next cold front, right now looks a little nasty back through nebraska, eye owe washings but once it starts to roll through our area come say tomorrow evening, we're probably only going to see hit or miss shower or storm out of t soap, with high pressure today, upper 80s, with high pressure tomorrow, we expect high of 90 degrees in the city. then that front comes along, by wednesday night, showers, spotty thunderstorms, that's it. if that. some of you might not even see drop of rain. then cristobal again making its closest pass, will keep the rip current and surf risk

three year old sleeping in a crib in a darby borough delaware county apartment. authorities say the bullet likely came from about a block away, they add they are looking for suspects in their teens or 20's. >> police in gloucester township searching for hit-and-run driver who seriously injured 23 year old

kevin trent. hit near the strawberry square shopping center sunday night. investigators say the hit-and-run car has front end damage and possibly a shattered windshield. and, 58 year old clarence hairston faces long list of charges after allegedly allowing his eight year old nephew to steer his car through upper darby. police say hairston was drunk when he was pulled over last saturday. time now for a check of your business news. >> mine watch's jill wagner joins us now from the new york stock exchange, hearing that a.m. monday is making a big purchase there is time teaming video games. what can you tell us? >> reporter: that's right, the e commerce giant plans to buy twitch for about a billion dollars. each month millions of people across the globe use twitch to watch friends and strangers play video games in real time. and, according to analysts, companies pay about 85% more for adds on twitch than other video sites. now, this purchase is seen as a blow to google, earlier this year, google's youtube was
