the united states is checking an unconfirmed report that a second american fighting with islamic militants in syria has been killed. meanwhile, the mother of an american journalist held hostage by isis is pleading for his life. susan mcginnis is in washington. good morning, susan. >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. a member of the free syrian army, that's the u.s.-backed group that is said to have killed american douglas mccain, says there were two americans killed fighting alongside the militants. this comes as the life of another freelance journalist could be in danger. a second american from the minneapolis area was killed fighting for the islamic jihadist group isis. friends and family of the victim tell cbs news. u.s. officials say they are trying to confirm the report. the news comes following confirmation another u.s. citizen, douglas mcarthur mccain died fighting alongside the terrorists over the weekend.

militant groups are said to be using facebook twitter and all other social media groups to recruit westerners. >> there are 1,000 fighters from up to 50 countries who have traveled to syria to take up arms alongside isil. >> reporter: the white house is considering taking military action against the militants in syria. isis has taken americans hostage including journalist steven sotlof. >> i am shirley sotlof. my son is in your hands. >> reporter: she made this video begging for mercy. >> i want what every mother wants. to see your children's children. he plead with you to grant me this. >> reporter: isis threatened to kill sotlof in the same video of the beheading of james foley. on tuesday lawmakers from both parties called for debate and vote in congress to authorize the president to take military action in iraq and syria.

anne-marie. >> susan mcginnis in washington. thank you, susan. a former hostage peter theo curtis said he had no idea so many people put so much effort into securing his release. >> there have been literally hundreds of people brave, determined, big-hearted people all over the world working for my release. they have been working for two years on this. >> curtis was freed by a syrian extremist group on sunday after being held for 22 months. speaking yesterday curtis said he was overwhelmed by the kindness of the american people. overseas heavily armed russian backed separatists are advancing in eastern ukraine this morning. the ukrainian military says russian troops are involved in the fighting. the new offensive appears to be created at a land link between crimea and russia. ukrainian and separatists troops battled for control. separatists and russian troops entered the town this morning.

elsewhere, at least three people were killed in the fighting of donetsk. and this morning two powerful storms are churning up the surf on both coasts. hurricane cristobol will past northwest of bermuda today as it races northeast in the atlantic. the storm has sustained winds of 75 miles per hour but it is not expected to hit the coast. and tropical storm marie is losing strength as it heads west in the pacific. cristobol is causing dangerous conditions along the east coast though. there are life threatening surf and rip currents from north carolina to long island. seven deaths are blamed on the storm but mostly from flooding in the caribbean. the west coast is feeling the effects of tropical storm marie. surfers brave the giant waves in southern california. as bigad shaban reports, there was flooding in low lying beach communities. >> reporter: powerful waves up to 15 feet high slammed the

california coast. the largest surf in years from a summer storm is on full display. >> this is part of the floor. it's already been buckled up. >> reporter: hector ram was visiting his aunt's home along seal beach when he heard the waves crash onto the shore. the boardwalk and beach was flooded. a foot of water swept through his family's home. >> it moved quickly. not slowly quickly. you could hear from the sound of the waves that something was going to happen. >> reporter: was any part of the house left dry? >> nothing. not from the garage nothing. >> reporter: after the initial flooding crews built 6-foot high berms that stretch for a half mile. 6,000 sand bags are being used to act as another barrier. hundreds packed spots like newport beach to watch surfers brave monster breaks. life guards rescued a number of swimmers and surfers. >> i have never seen waves this big in seal beach. i swim in the ocean regularly. i swim around the pier

regularly. never this big. i wouldn't go out there. >> reporter: it snapped pylons. meteorologists say storm driven waves and rip currents could last through friday. bigad shaban cbs news. seal beach, california. arizona prosecutors say they will not file charges in the death of a firing range instructor. he was killed when a 9-year-old lost control of an automatic machine gun. john blackstone reports. >> reporter: the bullets and burgers shooting range in the arizona desert promotes itself in online videos as a place for family fun firing machine guns. it's one of several las vegas tour stops that offers visitors a chance to tryout exotic weapons. >> rock and roll baby. >> reporter: video released by the mohave county sheriff's office shows the moments before the accidental shooting of

bullets and burgers employee charles vaka. >> just like that. >> 39-year-old military veteran is showing a 9-year-old girl how to shoot an oozy submachine gun, a weapon that can fire 16 rounds a second. >> go ahead and give me one shot. all right. >> reporter: then the gun is shot to automatic. >> pull on the trigger. >> reporter: the gun recoiled pulled up and he was shot in the head. sam runs bullets and burgers. >> we don't know what happened. our guys are trained to basically hover over peek when they're shooting. >> good job. >> reporter: another video does show an employee hovering with his hand on the shooting of the young shooter, standing on the same side and ready to push it out of the way. >> in your shoulder just like that. all right, go. >> reporter: the video of the other gentleman shows with his hand on her back and standing on

indiana bp oil refinery east of chicago shook nearby homes. the blast yesterday was heard several blocks away. the plant's fire department sprayed the flames with water and there were no injuries reported. the explosion came on the 59th anniversary of a blast there that killed two people. and police in omaha, nebraska, say that a member of the production crew for the television show "cops" was accidentally shot and killed during the investigation of a robbery. omar villafranca says that the shooting was a friendly fire incident. >> this was a friendly fire situation. >> reporter: omaha police say it was an officer's bullet that struck and killed a crew member for the reality show "cops" during a robbery attempt thursday night. 38-year-old audio technician

bryce dionne was shot as they were trying to exit the building. >> officers are returning fire. bryce is in that vestibule and gets struck by a round. >> cortez washington was also killed. his weapon a realistic looking pellet gun. >> it has been determined that mr. washington's handgun is an air soft pistol that fires plastic pellet bullets. >> reporter: bryce was a seven-year veteran of the long-running show which documents this. >> the camera guy was hysterical. stay with me. stay with me. >> "cops" is a reality show. it's not managed, it's not staged, it's all true and it's real. it happens as it happens. unfortunately that's our highlight and our low light. >> reporter: the crew's video is now evidence that will be shown to a grand jury. >> based on our viewing of the footage the officers had no choice other than to respond in which the manner they did.

russian hackers may have responded. according to "the new york times" the hackers gained access to checking and savings account information. the new safety concerns being raised over a defect any key electrical component in chrysler vehicles. owners of millions of chrysler cars built between 2007 and 2014 may face engine shutdowns, fires, and unintended acceleration. the center for auto safety believes the problem is a defect in what's called the totally integrated power module. >> chrysler has submitted at least 20 death claims on components that are related to this totally integrated power module or the tipm. we're seeking the underlying document to see if it was the tipm that caused the fatality. >> chrysler says it is unaware of any related fatalities and that its vehicles meet or exceed all applicable safety standards,

however, the company also says it is actively investigating customer complaints and retrieving components from the field for closer analysis. market basket workers are being welcomed back today after a deal was reached to sell the supermarket chain to its ousted ceo. after a worker's revolt and customer boycott, market basket stores announced the popular former executive arthur demoules will buy a majority stake in the business and take over day-to-day operations. here in washington today investors will be looking for revised data on u.s. economic growth in the second quarter. the dow gained 15 points the nasdaq lost 1. the s&p 500 rose .1 to a third straight record close. and in california napa wineries and other businesses will get some earthquake relief. a $10 million community fund is being set up to make repairs and get wineries back open. the quake affected hundreds of

here's a look at today's forecast in some cities around the country. in sports usc football captain josh shaw went from hero to goat in the span of two days. shaw was suspended indefinitely from all team activities after admitting his story about jumping off a balcony to save his drowning nephew was fabricated. he came up with the story to explain how he sprained both ankles. his attorney says shaw fell from

a balcony. in baseball the short stops are the difference between the braves and the mets. new york trying to get out of the third inning but reuben miss plays a ground ball allowing a run to come home for atlanta. then in the bottom of the eighth braves shortstop andrew fitzsimmons makes the highlight reel throw to first. that keeps the potential tying run from scoring and atlanta wins 3-2. san francisco needing a win to keep a game and a half lead over atlanta in the wild card race. and with the game against colorado tied 2-2 in the bottom of the ninth, buster posey comes to the plate. >> high drive left field, and it is outta here! >> posey's walk-off homer gives the giants a 4-2 win. and a celebration of little league baseball in two big cities wednesday. the jackie robinson west all stars were honored with a parade

a week and a half ago the national guard was deployed in ferguson missouri to end rioting over the police shooting of michael brown. last night the guard left the city as tensions eased. meanwhile, brown's death has many calling for officers to wear cameras. bob orr shows us how other police departments use them. >> on the wrong side of the road. >> reporter: it was 2:00 in the morning when police in laurel maryland, pulled over a woman driving on the wrong side of the road. one officer was wearing a small camera like this one attached to his glasses. >> go ahead and turn the car off and hand him the keys. >> and this is exactly what he saw. the woman restarted the engine slammed the car into drive and sped away. >> she just took off. she's going the wrong way on -- northbound. >> reporter: as the camera continued to roll police gave chase. the woman crashed her car and then tried to flee on foot. pursuing officers hit her with a taser and arrested her for drunk driving. >> put your hands behind your

back. >> reporter: james brooks, laurel's deputy police chief, says all of his street officers now wear cameras. >> you can actually see that the camera -- as my head moves the camera moves with me. >> reporter: to brooks it's all about accountability. >> if you didn't have that camera, that tape, the officer would just have his account. >> that's correct. now going down the road you see a car weaving back and forth, you can turn the camera on and start to capture that evidence that you may want to present for a dui case in court. >> reporter: in daytona beach, florida, police wearing cameras caught a man beating his girlfriend. faced with clear video evidence jeremy archer pleaded guilty to battery and drug possession. police say the recordings have helped diffuse potential confrontation. in the two years they've been used in riolto california, the use of force is down 48% and complaints against officers are also down 88%. in laurel, maryland where cameras have been on the street
