charlie rose and norah odom are off but we're in goonld hands. anthony mason is with us and we're ready. >> they're off, we're on. >> we're very on. storms are creating dangerous conditions along boast coast this morning. hurricane cristobal is causing deadly rip currents in the east. >> and tropical storm marie is battering southern california with gigantic waves. >> oh. oh. just fell. it just fell. >> overnight in malibu a historic lifeguard house that served as backdrop in movies and tv shows collapsed into the ocean. teri okita is in seal beach where the big waves are still coming. terri teri good morning. >> reporter: good morning. the swells have reached as high as 25 feet. it's led to about 35 rescues

since tuesday. one death is being investigated as surf-related and this high-risk show isn't over yet. along the southern california coast, nature is treating wave watchers to a show unlike any they've ever seen. >> these guys getting crazy rides and people cheering on the beach. it's a good show for free. >> it's exciting to see this much surf. i don't think we've seen that in a decade or so. >> reporter: the massive waves were relentless from newport beach where this boogie border was thrown sky-high to catalina where vehicles were tossed ashore to malibu where water threatened multi-billion-dollar homes and damaged a pier. it's all because of a tropical storm marie, 8 miles west of baja peninsula. even surfers like laird hamilton couldn't resist. caught in this video riding directly under the pier. not only did he surf, he saved.

he assisted in a rescue. >> his eyes were big and was appreciative to be back on the land. >> reporter: lifeguard jacob reed said he rescued one man caught in a current. >> he was very panicked. >> reporter: bulldozers were called in to beef up the shoreline and protect expensive beach homes. thousands of spectators stayed out of the water but not necessarily out of harm's way, snapping pictures dangerously close to the crashing waves. >> the surge comes up it wraps around the back of them and can pull them back out to water, out to sea. >> reporter: the seal beach pier behind me is closed until safety inspectors can come in check it out and give it the all clear to reopen. as for the high surf it's expected to stick around at least through tomorrow early evening, late afternoon, and then it's going to die down

making it much safer for beachgoers over the holiday weekend. >> thanks, teri. it will be another high surf along the east coast. in ocean city maryland an 18-year-old swimmer from virginia drowned in a rip current wednesday. the beach patrol saved dozens of people. and big hail hit limon, colorado, southeast of denver. millions could see more severe weather there today. meteorologist megan glaros of our cbs station wbbm is tracking the storms. good morning. flash flood watches are up across portions of the plains and the midwest bringing heavy potential rain to parts of the center of the nation over the course of the next few days. it's a low pressure system and cold front pushing it into the great lakes going into labor day weekend.

it will amp up the risk for severe weather. we're talking rainfall totals over the next 48 hours that could get near to 5 inches. flooding will be a factor in that area of the country. and along the east coast, we're looking at cristobal, still 75-mile-an-hour sustained winds wrapping at 25 miles an hour but will cause rough surf along the east coast likely through friday. gashlgs anthony? >> thanks. reports say computer hackers may have hit several banks. they apparently exposed account numbers at jpmorgan chase. bob orr is in washington where the fbi is on the case. bob, good morning. >> good morning. the latest cyber attacks happened earlier this month aimed at stealing checking and savings account banks including jpmorgan. law enforcement tell us that the fbi and secret service are working to determine the overall scope of this breach which

apparently involved attacks. a report by bloomberg say the attacks appear to be the work of sophisticated russian cyber thieves well beyond the capability of amateur hackers and it may be retaliation for recent u.s. sanction on russia. a spokesman for jpmorgan did give us the following statement. companies of our size unfortunately experience cyber attacks nearly every day. we have multiple layers of defense to counter any defense and watch at any level. they're not seeing any unusual fraud activity. the fbi is not commenting. >> thank you, bob. we're hearing for the first time from the family of steven sotloff. in a message released yesterday hiss mother begged the leader of isis to set her son free. margaret brennan is tracking developments from the state

department and she joins us this morning. good morning. >> well, good morning. the video produced by the sotloff family was released in both arabic and english all around the world. it's an 11th hour plea firefighter help since all u.s. government efforts and other diplomatic channels failed. >> i am shirley sotloff. my son stephen is in your hands. >> the mother of kidnapped journalist steven sotloff made an impassioned plea for help. >> we want to see him home and safe and sound and hug him. >> reporter: he's been held captive by isis last august but the world first saw his face last week. that's when isis showed this video, the video of beheading of james foley. the same executioner threatened to bekill sotloff next. she begged for his mercy.

>> i want what every mother wants, to live to see her children's children. i plead you to grand grant me this. >> reporter: white house spokesman josh earnest did not state. another american hostage peter theo curtis was released on sunday. he was reunited with his mother at boston's logan airport on wednesday after 122 months in captivity in syria. >> i had no idea that so muchest was being expended on my behalf. >> reporter: he had been held by a different wing. outside his mother's house in cambridge, massachusetts, on wednesday, he told reporters how thankful he was to be free. >> i suddenly remember how good the american people are and what kindness they have in their hearts, and to all those people i say a huge thank you from my heart -- from the bottom of my

heart. >> reporter: as for the three other americans still being held by isis it's not clear whether that group is motivated by ransom or the p.r. strategic value that comes from holding americans hostage. >> margaret thank you. we're learning this morning about another american reportedly killed in syria's civil war. u.s. officials say they're trying to confirm the report but friends and family say a man from the minneapolis area died last weekend fighting with isis forces in syria. the man came from the same region as 33-year-old douglas mccain who also was killed last weekend fighting alongside isis. back in may another american from florida carried out a suicide bombing in northern syria. a sister of the boston marathon bombing suspect is due in court next month after being arrested for an alleged bomb threat of her own. alina turned hers in to police yesterday. she's charged with grag vated

harassment. she allegedly threatened to bomb a woman who was allegedly involved with her boyfriend. a new refined search is in the works for missing malaysia airlines. investigators now say the jet may have left its course earlier than thought. they're bringing in a dutch company to conduct a new massive underwater search. it will start next month and could last a year at a cost of about 50$50 million. ukraine claims that russia inaded his country this morning. he claims that separatists and armed groups are vancing. the ambassador to ukraine wrote on twitter that an increasing number of russian troops are fight in ukraine territory. overnight in donesque 11 people were killed. it appears to be creating a land

link between the coastline and russia. a texas father accused in a revenom killing is freed this morning. he was aquisted of murder charges after prosecutors argued he shot to death a drunk driver that had killed his two sons. prosecutors had a weak case. manuel, good morning. >> good morning. it all came down to evidence and in the end the prosecution did not have enough to convince the jury that david barajas pulled the trigger in an act of revenge. they also could not overcome the sympathy many felt for the father's loss. >> reporter: david barajas who was facing life in prison walked out of court with his wife by his side. prosecutors argued the suburban houston man shot and killed the driver after his two sons were killed on the side of the road. the 32-year-old cried when the

not guilty verdict was red. the jury deliberated for less than three hours. the couple witnessed the death of their sons in december 2012. the family was driving down a dark rural texas road when their truck ran out of gas. 12-year-old david jr. and 11-year-old caleb got out and pushed. >> times i wish we were all taken together. there's no going back. i have to live with the fact and my husband that we let them off the truck. >> reporter: they were 100 yards from their home when jose who was drunk plowed into them. tests later showed his blood alcohol content was twice the legal limit. he was shot in the head. >> i respect the jury system. >> reporter: the district attorney insists the getters accurately pulled the finger at him. >> the sheriff's department did a fabulous job. i think circumstantial evidence

cases will always be difficult. >> reporter: while barajas said he's not sure who killed him it's an unsolved crime. >> somebody killed him. it wasn't mr. barajas. >> the family did not speak after the vencht there was little physical evidence tying barajas to the killing. am nugs and a holster for the type of gun for the murder was found in the family home but the gun used was not found. gail gayle? >> thank you. a tv crew documented the death of one of their owner men when they got caught up in a police shoot-out. how the production turned very tragic. jim, good morning. >> good morning. investigators say it was police gunfire that accidentally killed him. the suspect was armed only with a pellet gun but police say it look like the real thing.

>> reporter: it was supposed to be just another episode of the long-running tv show "cops." . a production crew embedded with omaha police was on the scene as three officer reported to a robbery in progress at wendys. >> witnesses describe hearing the suspect's handgun being fired and seeing the slide recoil with the shots. >> reporter: omaha police says the suspect was armed with a type of pellet gun that looks and sounds like an actual firearm. >> it became a chaotic scene. the cameraman made his way to the eating area and was able to get down and hold his camera up. >> reporter: it shows how the audio supervisor 33-year-old brace dion got caught in the gunfire. >> when they encountered the suspect and the gunfire ensued and it's a very dramatic video,

bryce is in that vestibule and got struck. >> we've got a comeameraman hit. he's not breathing. >> reporter: he was hit in an unprotected airy and died. >> "cops" truly is a reality show. it's not manipulated or staged. it's all real. it happens as it happens. >> the robbery suspect was also shot and killed. omaha's police chief say the officer's on standard paid leave pending investigation. a disturbing hoax with rootses in virtual reality becomes all too real in a colorado town with gun violence. michelle miller shows us the latest results of a scam called swatting. >> reporter: wednesday morning jordan mathisen was live

streaming while playing a video game called counterstrike. in a game he played a gunman on a mission to take down terrorists. but the fantasy quickly became a reality as mathisen himself became a target of police. s.w.a.t. teams burst into the office their weapons drawn and aimed at him. police ordered him to the ground and placed the gamer in handcuffs. local schools and businesses were on lockdown for more than an hour. after finding no threat police realized the 911 call was a prank known as s.w.a.t.ing. it's when someone reports a fake report. law enforcement says there's nothing funny about it. >> as you can tell there's a lot of resources here a lot of taxpayer dollars going on.

s.w.a.t.ers have also targeted hollywood celebrities including justin bieber ashton kutcher, and the kardashians. >> it isn't just one car that goes to this. it may be ten cars 20 cars. this is not a game. this is real life. you're taking real resources way from people that need them. >> and after the incident mathisen tweeted with other users about the tweet. so it's unclear that he was anticipating the s.w.a.t. team, but littleton police say they're still investigating. >> they'll get to the bottom of it. still not funny. thank you, michelle. it is 7:19. ahead on

>> and he was so great. a family is demanding answers this morning from southwest airlines. they lost a grandmother for hours. she shared her story with suzanne mccarroll from our denver station. >> what did you think was going to happen to you? >> that i was going to sit there forever. >> i was sitting in a wheelchair. >> earlier this month her daughter dropped her at. but she wasn't allowed to take her mom to the gate without a ticket. a sky cap offered to wheel the 85-year-old inside the terminal but parentally forgot about her. >> he pushed me there and left me. he didn't say anything or do anything and nobody else showed up and i didn't know why i was sitting there. >> reporter: vaticano ended up missing her flight left
