to make deliveries. captioning funded by cbs this is the "cbs morning news" for friday, august 29th, 2014. good morning. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. president obama says there are no immediate plans to launch air strikes against isis militants in syria. on thursday they displayed their harsh tactics once again. this is video that appears to show captured syrian soldiers being marched to the desert to their death. more than 150 captured soldiers were reportedly killed by isis fighter and this morning the president is taking heat from his critics who says he doesn't understand the isis threat. susan mcginnis is in washington and has more on the uproars. susan, good morning. >> an ma reerks good morning. the president says the u.s. is preparing a rachlg for options but is saying outright there is

no u.s. strategy for immediate fire here on capitol hill. >> good afternoon, everybody. >> president obama says military action to defeat islamic militants in syria is not imminent. he's calling on the pentagon to call on plans to take out the group known as isis. >> i don't want to put the cart before the horse. we don't have a strategy yet. >> that comment drew fire from critics including republican senate minority leader mitch mccome who says in part the president needs to use his full extent of authority to attack this enemy force. the president needs to present his plan to congress and to the american people. senator bill nelson is calling for targeted air strikes. >> the head of the snake is in syria and if you want to kill the snake, you need to cut off its head. >> president obama discussed military options for going after isis with his national security team last night. he's also sending secretary of state john kerry to the middle east to build support.

>> in order for us to degrade isil over the long term, we're going to have to build a regional strategy. now, we're not going that alone. >> the united states has already launched more than 100 air strikes to hit isis targets in neighboring iraq but the president admits action there is not enough to defeat the group. the u.s. has identified so far nearly 12 americans who have traveled to seary to fight alongside these terrorists. two of them have reportedly been killed in the fighting. anne-marie? >> susan mcginnis in washington. thank you, susan. the president of ukraine is urging citizens as russian troops advance through the territory. they have seized strategic cities through eastern ukraine. nato is calling the action a full-scale invasion and has released satellite photos it says proves it. david martin has our report.

>> reporter: satellite photos shows russian artilleries on the move in ukraine. this is not equipment supplied to pro-russian equipment. they say it's a russian combat unit that's crossed the border and is operating on ukrainian soil. president obama stopped short of calling it an invasion labeling it an incursion instead. >> russia has deliberately and repeatedly violated the sovereignty of ukraine and the forces inside ukraine make that plain for the world to see. >> reporter: these russian soldiers were captured 15 miles inside ukrainian territory. an increasing number of russian troops are intervening directly infighting on ukrainian territory. the u.n. ambassador said on his twitter account. and at an emergency session of the u.n. security council the american executive samantha power made accusations of the kind that used to be leveled during the cold war.

>> every step russia has come before this council to say everything but the truth. it is manipulated, it has obfuscated. it has outright lied. >> reporter: over the last 48 hours russia has opened up another front in southeastern ukraine where columns of vehicles supporting artillery fire are advancing down the coast and have so far taken two cities. again, these are not vehicles supplied to the officers. america says they're flat outrussian forces. instead the u.s. an its european allies will consider imposing additional economic sanctions on russia. david martin, cbs news, the pentagon. a moderately strong earthquake shook southern greece. it was centered in the sea about 90 miles south of athens. it was felt in the capital and across the country but no damage and injuries have been reported.

and back in this country comedian joan riverss is being treated at a new york hospital this morning. she was having a procedure at the doctor's office when her heart stops. >> reporter: joan rivers is resting comfortable according to her daughter melissa rivers. she went on to say we ask you to keep her in your thoughts and prayers. officials have confirmed joan rivers is, in fact, a patient here but they've declined to update her current condition. here's what we know for sure. joan rivers was brought to this hospital yesterday morning in critical condition and reportedly the 81-year-old suffered a cardiac arrest and stopped breathing while undergoing a procedure on her throat at a doctor's office and that's when she was taken to the hospital. now, joan rivers has been

engaged a very busy and active lifestyle. on wednesday she made an appearance to promote her recently released book and tonight she was scheduled for a performance in new jersey, but that performance has been postponed. in new york, marlie hall, cbs news. well, the nfl admitted it dropped the ball. reacting to the fallout foll following its two-game suspension of ray rice, the league has implemented tougher sanctions against domestic violence. jim axelrod explains. commissioner goodell took responsibility for being too lenient in a high-profile case involving ray race. i didn't get it right he wrote. dough mess tuck violence and sexual assault are wrong, they're illegal, they have no place in the nfl, and they're unacceptable in any way. he faced criticism for his handling of the ray rice case.

rice is an all-prorunning back for the baltimore ravens. last winter he and his then fiancee were aresult for an assault after an altercation between the two. now his wife parentally unconscious after the fight. >> i made a huge mistake and i want to own it. i want to say in front of my teammates, i made a mistake. these two games are going to hurt. these two games are going hurt. >> reporter: in a letter admitting his mishandling of the issue, domestic violence or sexual assault by any employee of the team will mean a six-game suspension. anything further will be ban from the league though any offender can reapply after a year. he says it doesn't apply just to players but coaches and high-level personnel as well. jim axelrod, cbs news, new york. well, coming up on the "morning news," drone delivery

water caused by hurricane cristobal. cristobal is one of two big storms the national hurricane center is keeping an eye on this morning. as cristobal moves off into the atlantic, tropical storm marie is also causing big waves in the pacific, and as teri okita reports, the powerful display of nature is bringing big crowds to the beach. >> reporter: the 15-foot washs did not scare off swimmers and surfers despite the danger. there have been more than 500 rescues since tuesday across southern california. >> everything is enhanced during the swell. >> reporter: lifeguard carson hill saved 14 people. how difficult is it to rescue people under these conditions? >> it's very difficult. sometimes it can be treacherous. it's all in the thrill. i don't ever think of it as danger. you kind of jump in for the fun of it. >> reporter: strong rip currents and tides can come to shore.

this ripped apart a lifeguard building that's malibu landmark. cbs news correspondent carter evans shared this view of what it was like to ride waves that have attracted thousands of spectators. the national weather service says this is the most significant southerly swell since 1996. forecasters expect the high surf will end friday, but until then lifeguards warn inexperienced swimmers should stay out of the water. teri okita, newport beach, california. on the cbs "moneywatch" now malaysian airlines announces cuts. good morning, wendy. >> good morning, anne-marie. malaysian airlines is cutting about thousand jobs. it follows the shooting down of the jet over ukraine and the disappearance of flight 370 over the ocean. google is building drones

for a package delivery system. a fleet of drones is in development at google's project wing to carry merchandise to customers from its online store. test flights in australia recently delivered a first aid kit, candy bars, dog treats, and water to two farmers. that puts google in a race with amazon to use an unmanned aircraft to deliver packages. here on wall street today concerns about international conflict and european inflation before the end of the month holiday weekend could stenld stocks lower. the dow lost 42 points thursday, the nasdaq almost 12. standard & poor's lost 3 points. the company makes police body cameras. since the shooting of michael brown and the protests, they have sold equipment to police departments in missouri and they just got a million-dollar order for body cameras from state police in michigan. wendy? >> wendy gillette from the new york stock exchange. thanks, wendy.

games kicking off on thursday. none was bigger than the matchup of ranked s.e.c. foes texas a&m and south carolina. a&m taking the field for the first time since the defar tur of partner johnny manziel and his former backup did just fine. kenny hill breaks manziel's record with 511passing yards, and the ages snapped south carolina's 18-game home-winning streak with a convincing 52-28 victory. meanwhile manziel playing with the pros. the rookie quarterback getting some work in during cleveland's final preseason game. and johnny football displaying the skills that made him a star at a&m. he throws a touchdown pass and rushes for 55 yards in a 33-13 win over chicago. but it will be some time before we see him play again. manziel did not win the browns' starting quarterback job. and american teen cici bellis is out of the u.s. open. on tuesday the 15-year-old became the youngest player to
