become a labor day tradition here in philadelphia. the hottest music acts from all over converge on four different stages for a party like no other. "eyewitness news" reporter noelle mclaren is live tonight amid all the action on the parkway. hi, noelle. >> reporter: hey. four hours into the made in america performances here and the place is already packed. take a look behind me here. you can see fans already flooding the entrance gates here. many people here to see tonight's headliner kanye west but there are four stages inside made in america and taking one of them is australian edm group cut snake. they're moments from performing right now. we got to talk with them exclusively a few minutes ago and they told us this is their first time in philly and they're very excited to be here. >> pretty much the best meal of my life last night. >> when i think of philly it's rocky balboa, yeah, i'm going to still run those stairs

already, mate. that's what i'm going get to, those stairs. >> reporter: headliner kanye west is expected to take the stage at 10:30. we'll of course bring you more from the concert in later editions of our newscast but for now we're live at the made in america concert, noelle mclaren, cbs3 "eyewitness news." >> thank you. and whether you're heading to made in america or down the shore or you're just having a cookout in your own backyard the weather is on everybody's minds tonight. meteorologist justin drabick joins us now. let's hope you have some good news for us, justin. >> not a bad forecast diana but we will run some chances for showers and storms. remember, it's still summertime and we will be feeling like summer. a little on the cool side but dry. highs only 81 degrees at the airport in philadelphia, 77 ownly in trenton, 75 in millville. lot of cloud cover across the region but we'll keep things dry tonight. so looks good at the made in america concert. right now mid and upper 70's for the air temperatures so

somewhat comfortable. humidity though is on the rise. 75 in quakertown and doylestown this hour. let's get a check on those dewpoint temperatures that tells us how much moisture or humidity is in the atmosphere. starting to climb into the low 60's so it will feel muggy tonight. these numbers will be on the rise. so it's going to feel like the middle of summer really over the next few days with a hot and humid air mass building in. still a few clouds over the region. they'll thin out a little bit tonight. we'll call it partly cloudy through the overnight but nice and dry on storm scan3. evening plans looks all across the delaware valley, the mountains and down towards the shore. let's check out that concert forecast tomorrow. here in center city made in america hot and humid, late day showers and storms so most likely after 5 o'clock a warm day we're back into the upper 80's. elsewhere around the region looks dry on sunday with just a few clouds, it will be breezy at the shore with a high temperature of 83 degrees. up in the mountains looks like we'll see a better chance for some scattered showers and thunderstorms during the afternoon and at night with highs in the low 80's. again, key word here is scattered.

don't cancel those plans. it gets even hotter in the seven-day forecast. we'll get to those details coming up in a few minutes. diana. >> thank you justin. you can check the latest forecast any time on cbsphilly.com. while there you can also check out the labor day weekend events and activities around the region. we are following some breaking news. right now peco crews are out in montgomery county investigating a strong odor. we're told there have been hundreds of calls from residents. again, peco is working to figure out where that odor is coming from. of course we will stay on top of this and bring you updates as we get them. well, it is a sad weekend for thousands of casino workers in atlantic city. tomorrow at 4 o'clock, the showboat casino will close its doors for good after more than 27 years in business. it will also be the last day for normal operations at the revel before it closes its doors on monday and tuesday. then in a few weeks, the trump plaza is set to close on september 16th.

tonight police are trying to figure out what caused a deadly crash in south philadelphia. "eyewitness news" was on the scene shortly after it happened here at columbus boulevard and oregon avenue. you can see the car was wrecked coming to a rest against a utility pole on the other side of the road. that driver has not yet been identified. there are a lot of questions surrounding the death of a man in philadelphia's huntington park neighborhood -- hunting park, rather. the victim was found lying in the middle of the street at ninth and wyoming avenue. police say he suffered is severe head trauma but could not confirm what actually caused his fatal injury. right now they are investigating his death as suspicious. one person was rushed to the hospital after a crash involving the route 36 septa trolley. it happened around 3:30 this morning at south and 54th street. at south 54th street and lindbergh boulevard. septa says two cars were involved in an accident and somehow collided with the trolley. no one on board the trolley

was injured. that accident is now under investigation. more bloodshed in ukraine tonight. pushing the region even closer to an all-out war and now russia could be favoring more economic sanctions from the european union. cbs news correspondent wendy gillette has the very latest. >> reporter: ukraine's president says the situation in his country is nearing ah the tipping point. >> we are very close to the point of no return. point of no return is full scale war. >> reporter: nato estimates 1,000 russian troops currently occupy ukraine. moscow says its forces only crossed the border by accident and denies that it's supplying weapons to rebels. nearly 2600 people have been killed in eastern ukraine since fighting broke out in mid april. >> we continue to urge russia to stop hostile, to stop the flow of arms, equipment and personnel into the conflict region and to withdraw its forces from ukraine. >> reporter: the european

union began drawing up sanctions to force russia's hand. >> russia is practically in the war against europe. >> reporter: pro-russia forces killed and injured several ukrainian soldiers saturday as they were passing through a humanitarian corridor after retreating from a city now controlled by rebels. ukraine's national guard says the soldiers were given the corridor to exit, then were fired upon. ukraine president petro poroshenko is hoping for a ceasefire. he meets monday for representatives of kiev moscow and the european union. wendy gillette for cbs3 "eyewitness news". >> a stern warning from the king of saudia arabia. king abdullah said terrorists groups will attack europe and the united states unless they are faced way collective power from the international community. the comments come as the islamic extremist group isis seize add wide territory across iraq and 0y however abdullah did not mention any

dig that girl out. police began cpr after she was pulled free but she was later pronounced dead at the hospital. well, 30 years ago today the space shuttle discovery launched for the very first time. its missions came to represent the resilience of the u.s. space program. correspondent caylee atwood reports from virginia on the anniversary of that first flight. >> reporter: when space shuttle discovery blasted off for the first time it wasn't all smooth sailing. valerie neal curator of the smithsonian national air and space museum says the first launch came on the fourth attempt. >> when the main engines ignited and immediately slut down just four seconds before launch and a problem had been detected in one of the main engines so the computer shut down the launch. >> reporter: but discovery's maiden mission was a success and 38 more followed. discovery carried the hubble telescope into orbit and took a 77-year-old john glenn back to space in 1998. after the challenger and

columbia disasters it was discovery that returned the nation to flight. >> america is going to space again and we're going there to stay. >> reporter: yet the shuttle program's days were numbered. after completing its last space flight in march 2011, this beacon of hope landed at the smithsonian. >> it is bittersweet to have discovery here. nothing like a space shuttle has flown before and it's unlikely that anything will fly again that is as large as and as versatile as a space shuttle orbiter. >> reporter: now discovery's mission is to help millions of museum visitors learn about manned space flights, many who never got to experience. >> three, two, one,. >> reporter: the exhileration of a shuttle liftoff. kylie atwood, cbs news chantilly, virginia. >> well, it's hard to believe neighborhood weekend is finally upon us. >> i know. >> but i think a lot of people were happy to see the sun trying to make its way through

this afternoon. >> you know, yeah, they say the unofficial end of summer but guess what it's going to feel like summer for the next several days. if you're a fan of summer weather you'll love this forecast. we'll crank up the heat and humidity. at least we start off the weekend dry. if you're at the shore or plan to head to the shore for the rest of the weekend not the best beach day today because of a lot of clouds but at least no rain. not a whole lot of people on the beach right now in margate. temperatures a little bit cooler there, in the mid 70's because of the cloud cover but we should see some more sunshine especially tomorrow at the shore and then certainly later sunday night and monday a better chance for some scattered showers and storms along the new jersey shore and delaware beaches but here we are right now somewhat cool because of the cloud cover. upper 70's in most spots. 78 in philadelphia, 79 wilmington, a cool 68 degrees in mount pocono but we will break out some sunshine be and warmer air builds in for the rest of the holiday weekend. south and west mid 80's in pittsburgh, 87 in richmond. this heat starts to build northward over the next 12 hours or so, so you're going

to feel the difference tomorrow, especially with the humidity, it is on the rise. it's going to feel like the middle of summer. again, we connect out that dewpoint temperature, tells us how much moisture is in the air or the humidity. right now we're at 62 degrees, so somewhat on the muggy side. tomorrow we're going to crank it up to 70 so what does that feel to you? yeah, we get that oppressive feel back into the forecast and looks like those dewpoints stay around 70 into monday and even tuesday. looking dry on storm scan3 over the east coast but you get farther west into the midwest out towards chicago, there's a few disturbances in the jet stream. they're going the take their time to get here. looks like one moves in here later tomorrow afternoon, tomorrow night. that breaks out a few scattered showers and storms. again, the key word here scattered. no need to can sells those plans and that trend will continue into labor day itself. the change in the jet stream taking a trip up to the north so all that heat and humidity that was combined down to the deep south that heads northward now and that sets up sunday, monday, tuesday, even into wednesday that jet stream stays to our north so that

means hot and humid conditions with above average temperatures. looks like we'll reach the lower 90's a couple of days this week. so here's the setup. high pressure slowly drifts off shore. that keeps our winds out of the south. that's a warm wind. humidity increases. late day scattered showers and storms on sunday, so most of the afternoon stays dry. temperatures in the upper 80's, close to 90. labor day itself, again not a washout. there's going to be some clouds around, a couple scattered showers, maybe even a thunderstorm especially early in the afternoon. improving conditions later during the day. looks like tuesday stays dry, hot and humid, back into the low 90's and tuesday night we're going to track this front moving through the delaware valley. that will bring a few showers and storms but that clears us out by wednesday back to dry conditions. so let's time it out for you. not much happening tonight. enjoy it. you have that evening barbecue or just hanging out, i know someone at the concert tonight, tell them it looks good. through midnight or so just some clouds around. tomorrow afternoon starts off drive. it's late afternoon, 3, 4

o'clock we could see a few scattered shower, maybe a thunderstorm. there's not a big severe threat with this system at all. same deal on labor day itself, clouds, little sunshine, chance for a few scattered showers and storms. improving conditions for labor day evening and that will trend into next week. so let's talk about the temperatures. today's highs only in the low 80's. big difference tomorrow. cranking it up into the upper 80's, lower 80's near the shore, big difference in the humidity. so it will feel even warmer than the actual air temperature. monday mid and upper 80's again for high temperatures with some sunshine. so here's your forecast overnight it's muggy, partly cloudy. we drop to about 70 for center city. a little bit cooler in the suburbs. late day scattered showers, maybe a thunderstorm coming in sunday. otherwise partly sunny skies, warm and humid, high 88. similar conditions for labor day itself. hot and humid with a shower or storm possible. temperatures in the upper 80's. here's your shore forecast. looks like we stay dry during the entire day, 83 for the high. ocean water comfortable 76 degrees. u.v. index on the high side, a seven out of 10. here's the forecast, scattered

shower, maybe a thunderstorm both sunday and monday upper 80's. hot and humid tuesday, 92 degrees for the high temperature. looks like we keep it dry through the rest of the week. still very warm for this time of year, upper 80's to around 90. hot start to september, how about that. >> i was going say looks like august wants to stick around a little longer. >> it is extended, yes. >> thanks justin lesley is here now with sports. >> that's right. the eagles 53 man softer all set. the birds released 19 players today with a few surprises. the long rumored release of kicker alex henery happened. eagles will go with rookie kicker cody parkey. he was perfect on thursday against the jets with two 50-yard field goals. damaris johnson who played in 27 games for the eagles and had a good preseason matthew tucker also cut. he in it split time between the practice squad and acing tiff roster. henry josie gets cut after finishing second in rushing for the nfl with the preseason yardage of 225. harry rows man spoke about the cuts at the novacare complex this afternoon. >> as you get better, as you improve the talent level it

gets harder and so we had some tough cuts but as coach goes through what he's looking for in each position and what he's looking for in packups some of those things kind of become clear to us. >> michael sam the first only gay athlete drafted into the nfl was cut by the rams today as the team trimmed its roster. head coach jeff fisher says it was a football position. he was pulling for him and he fit in very well. he still has a chance to make the practice squad or get picked up by another team. penn state opening the season today in dublin, ireland again the university of sentra florida. the first game under new head coach james franklin. now the pregame ceremonies for the croak park classic in dublin, many loyal penn state fans on hand. they're the coach hoping for a good start to the year. first quarter kristen hackenberg goes deep to desean hamilton a44-yard collection and they'll go up seven-nothing. heading to the third quarter it's hackenberg again but this time he finds geno louis.

he is wide opened, beats three guys. this is a 79-yard score. penn state will take a 20 to 10 lead. but ucf made a game out of it. nittany lions needed this 36-yard field goal at the buzzer. they win it. 26-24 is the final. early start to the game didn't stop these penn state fans from starting the college football season in style. the penn state alumni association holding a watch party at the field house in center city this morning. nothing like a tailgate that starts at 8:30 in the morning. and the phillies continue a three game series in new york tonight. jerome williams on the mound for the phillies taking on the ageless colon. the phillies lost last night after a very bad seventh inning. the game tied at one, jake diekman load the bases with two outs and graze sizemore to rob the routine fly ball here and two runners score on that. then the mets execute a perfect double steal. the phillies will lose four to

>> ♪ >> well, we've all heard about the taney dragons, but the delaware valley has another group of young sluggers that are celebrating. on thursday night the broomall newtown 13 to 15 team won the babe ruth world series championship in long view, washington. and the week before that the 13 prep team won the title in their age group, too. that's two national championships, same local baseball program. early this morning they made their triumphant return home. >> it's a great feeling. you know, it's great pride, the young men that have played for us this season. >> we were trying to win states and then just kept winning. it was amazing and we finally got here and worked hard and finished it out. >> broomall newtown is now the
