this is the "cbs morning news" for monday, september 1st, 2014. good morning. i'm marlie hall in for anne-marie green. it's been a stormy labor day weekend for much of the central and eastern united states, and the severe weather is threatening to cloud today's holiday. severe storms including heavy rains, damaged winds, and hail are possible today from the plains to the great lakes and into the northeast. severe thunderstorm watches are posted in kansas, illinois, missouri, and iowa. last night a powerful supercell rumbled across west central iowa. local officials say it's one of the worst storms they've seen in 20 years. winds reached 90 miles per hour. power was knocked out in the city of denison and dozens of homes were destroyed. lightning and thunder storms rolled through the new york city area. three men were hospitalized after being struck by lightning

at a new york city beach yesterday afternoon. >> lightning did hit the water. >> it hit the water. >> it hit the water or the sand. you can see like an explosion. you could see stuff lift up and then people just running. >> it was really loud, like just boom like a bomb blew up. >> thousands of concertgoers in philadelphia took shelter for more than an hour as the severe weather blew through. the show resumed later in the night, and the weather forced new york's electric zoo festival to close early. a severe windstorm knocked down trees and power lines. a tornado warning had been issued but it's unclear if a tornado actually struck the area. no injuries are reported. in iraq what's being described as an important victory against islamic extremists. a coalition of iraqi forces, shiite militia men with the aid

of air strikes ended a six-week siege that had trapped some 15,000 people in northern iraq. mark albert is in washington. mark, good morning. >> good morning, marlie. the iraqi government believed this town two hours before baghdad was about to be the scene of genocide. it's the second time in the month the u.s. military has intervened in iraq to prevent a humanitarian disaster. the u.s. pressed on with its mission to roll back the gains of isis militants in iraq, launching more air strikes in the terror group in the northern part of the country. following air strikes over the weekend in the amorally area, iraqi forces finally broke a neil two-month siege of the town buy isis. they dropped humanitarian age for thousands of people there. the u.s. has now carried about 120 strikes against isis in iraq, but last week president obama admitted the u.s. does not yet have a strategy to tackle

isis in neighboring syria. that has many lawmakers on both sides of the aisle concerned. senate intelligence committee chair dianne feinstein criticized the president's approach. >> i think i've learned one thing about this president and that is he's very cautious. maybe in this instance too cautious. >> arizona senator john mccain called for swift action. >> i think it starts with an understanding that this is a direct threat to the united states of america, that it may be one of the biggest we have ever faced. >> but some democrats are coming to president obama's defense. >> we can't simply bomb first and ask questions later. >> the pennet gonlt is drawing up plans for action in syria. now, if president obama does decide to take action against isis in syria, a bipartisan group of lawmakers want a vote in congress whether to utilize that force. >> mark albert in washington. thanks so much. this morning the u.s.

embassy residential compound in tripoli, libya, is under control of an islamic ally militia group. the militia called dawn of libya says it's been guarding or been guarding the compound since last week. the militia says it controls the capital following weeks of fighting with militias. you'll remember the rebels who toppled gadhafi more than three years ago. this morning president poroshenko accused russia of launching direct and open aggression against his country. representatives from russia, ukraine, and separatist rebels are meeting today to try to negotiate a truce. they have been advancing down the eastern coast. wendy gillette reports. >> reporter: russia ya's president is ready to talk. vladimir pew kin called on ukraine sunday to start a discussion on the crisis in

ukraine including talks about statehood for the region. some say use of the word statehood could mean russia is raising the stakes for regional independence. this sudden change in tone for moscow comes one day after the european union threat to draw up new economic sanctions against russia, and ukraine's president warning of the potential of all out war. >> we are very close to the point of nonreturn. >> reporter: pro-russia separatists launched a naval attack against ships on sunday but in one side of work they swapped for pair a troopers. key lawmakers say the united states should take action now in support of ukraine. >> give them the weapons they need, the wherewithal they need, give them the ability to fight. they will fight. >> think it's appropriate to up that level of aid, to make them a more capable fighting force. >> reporter: president obama

will discuss options at a nato summit later this week and he'll visit estonia where he's expected to deliver a strong message of support. wendy gillette for cbs news, new york. a huge cyber security breach. ai a hacker got into icloud and posted dozens of celebrities' photos. one of the victims was jennifer lawrence. another included supermodel kate winston and mary winsted star of "final destination 3." she tweeted knowing they were delead long ago i can only know the creepy effort. the family of joan rivers is hoping for a miracle. doctors began taking her out of a medically induced coma yesterday. the 81-year-old was rushed to a new york hospital on thursday after going into cardiac arrest during a procedure at a clinic.

today. they're upset that beijing broke its promise to let hong kong directly elect its next leader. police tried to keep the protesters back, pepper spraying some of them. activists also threatened blockade hong kong's financial district. nascar driver tony stewart was back on the track last night. he got a standing ovation at the atlanta motor speedway. it was his first race since august 9th when he hit and killed kevin ward jr., but stewart's return didn't last long. number 14 hit the wall on lap 173 and limped off the track. another football player is accused of hitting his girlfriend. san francisco's 49ers defensive end ray mcdonald was arrested this weekend. this will be the first test. vladimir duthiers has more. >> reporter: according to the san jose police department

mcdonald was having a birthday party at his home saturday night when the police were called. his fiancee who was pregnant showed please bruising on her neck and arms. he was arifted and taken to the santa clara county jail. he was convicted for inflicting injury on a spouse or co-habitant. he was released on bay. this comes days after nfl commissioner roger goodell announced tougher penalties on domestic abuse. rice was arrested in february after assaulting his now wife. in grainy video he's seen dragging her from an elevator at an atlantic city casino. goodell and the nfl faced fierce criticism after rice only received a two-game suspension. in a letter to the nfl thursday, goodell said any player found to have engaged domestic violence or sexual assault would be suspended for six games without pay. second-time offenders would be banned from the league for at least a year.

a bitter labor day for thousands of workers in atlantic city, new jersey. they were laid off last night when the showboat casino hotel folded. two other casinos will close their doors over the next two weeks. anne-marie green spoke with some of the angry workers. >> reporter: after a 27-year run on the atlantic city boardwalk, the mardi gras-themed showboat casino hotel closed its doors. when you look at those stickers that say closed on those doors, what do you think? >> it hurts. it hurts. >> we're looking at funeral. >> reporter: jo mary blanco and her husband are among the 5,000 plus casino workers who are about to lose their jobs. >> we couldn't believe it, you know. we couldn't believe it was actually happening. >> reporter: ronald downing works as kitchen help at revel. it will close tuesday morning. >> we'll have to go through the storm. we're strong. we're used to this in atlantic

city, whether it's an economic storm or natural storm, we know that we all have to come together. >> reporter: though the city and the state are providing employment support, pastor david mcget began says providing peace of mind is his department. >> this may be the silver linin we're more ready for this, this we're not going to go under. we didn't go under from sandy and we're not going under from this. >> reporter: atlantic city has been struggling to compete with the influx of new casinos opening in nearby states. though the closings are disappointing, the city will go on. >> if you look up and down, now you see the families. their kids are there. they're going to steel pier, the aquarium, they're doing a dolphin ride, they're going down and visiting ripley's believe it or not. so the idea that maybe a few

wozniacki. the angels finish off a big game sweep. mike trout drives in two runs and in the seventh he smashes his 31st home run. the angels win 8-1 and move five games ahead of oakland in the america league west. and an all-star texas affair in college football. baylor opening its new stadium against southern methodist. the baylor freshmen continuing the tradition of running onto the field and the stampede just continued from there. baylor has no problems beating smu, 45-0. when we return, wedding favors. we'll meet the groom who turned an expensive party for his broken engagement into a chance to help others.

and hearing that starts to fade as we get older. millions of seniors also lose their balance. falling is the number one cause of injuries among the elderly, but researchers in chicago have a high-tech approach to the problem. adriana diaz reports. >> reporter: this stumble was no accident. it was for 81-year-old mary kay's own good. mary is one of the hundreds of senior citizens coming to this lab at the university of illinois chicago to learn how to fall with lots of help. the seniors who fall here are less likely to slip in the real world. this is mary when she first came four years ago. this is her now. she's learned to stop herself

from falling. >> they will be walking and not feeling anything different and the next time they're walking, all of a sudden it's like they intentionally step on a banana peel. >> reporter: seniors reported falling just a half hour. the results occurred over two year. the learning happens subconsciously though cognitive memory continues to diminish in the elderly he felt that their muscle memory is sharp. their bodies learn how to correct for a fall after a few controlled stumbles. >> it is almost like they learn a dance move. they know the footwork after they made a mistake. >> reporter: his findings could have a big impachlkt falling is the leading cause of both fatal and nonfatal injuries among the elderly costing the health system $30 billion a year. one in three adults 65 or older
