struck once. captioning funded by cbs this is the "cbs morning news" for wednesday, september 4, 2014. good morning. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. a two-day summit starts in wales but before the official meeting begins, president obama and the leaders will hold a separate sidebar meeting. the topics, russian aggression in ukraine and what to do about islamic militants. yesterday the president said his objective is to degrade and destroy isis. he later backtracked from that language. >> we can continue to shrink isil's sphere of influence, its effectiveness, its financing, its military capabilities to the point where it is a manageable problem. >> that was cause for some criticism on capitol hill.

mark albert is in washington. >> good morning, anne-marie. saxby chambliss said he was extremely disappointed by the president saying he wanted isis degraded to a managebling problem. even al franken of minnesota said he was troubled by the administration's lack of strategy for hitting isis in syria, which make this two-day nato meeting so crucial. on the sidelines of the nato summit in wales, president obama is meeting with european allies in part to help build an international coalition to address the growing threat of isis in iraq and syria. the president co-authored an op-ed with british prime minister david cameron in today's "times of london" newspaper, accusing the group of brutal and poisonous extremism and vowed to strengthen their resolve against the terror group. vice president joe biden hammered the message home. >> we will follow them to the gates of hell until they are

brought to justice. >> reporter: amid ongoing air strikes against targets in iraq, isis has kept up its brutality, beheading a second american, journalist steven sotloff this week. his father was at a loss for words yesterday. a spokesman deliver add message on behalf of the family. >> he was no hero. like all of us, he was a mere man who tried to find good concealed in a world of darkness. >> lawmakers on capitol hill are now pressuring president obama to quickly lay out a plan to stop isis in syria. some in both the house and senate are planning to use legislation allowing him to use force if necessary. >> they are a violent group. you cannot negotiate with them, you cannot sit down and reason with them. >> congress will return from its recess monday with isis already on its full plate. and in that joint op-ed, president obama and prime minister cameron also called on other nato countries to spend

more on defense saying that would send a powerful message to those who would threaten the west. anne-marie? >> mark albert in washington. thank you, mark. ukrainian president petro poroshenko will also attend the sideline meeting in wales. they're going to accept a 16 million dollar fund to beef up security. he's working with president vladimir putin on a peace plan. ukrainian forces should pull back. the pentagon says 200 u.s. forces will participate in military exercises in eastern ukraine next week. and the justice department plans to open a wide-ranging investigation into the ferguson, missouri, police department. this is separate from the investigation into the shooting of unarmed teenager michael brown by a police officer. the new inquiry will look at the department's arrest patterns,

use of force, and training. and the death toll from the west african ebola outbreak is growing. the world health organization says more than 1,900 people have died and that's more than all previous epidemics since ebola was first detected in 1976. >> reporter: dr. rick sacra has been making trips to west africa since the mid-'80s. he sent well wishes to kent brantley and nancy writebol after they had been diagnosed with ebola in liberia. he volunteered to go himself. bruce johnson runs the s.i. aid group i remember the day i got the word when rick said send me back in. i just went, wow, what commitment of an individual knowing that he was going into potentially harm's way orr sacra

was not working with ebola. he was going into an obstetrics wing. he's isolated himself and is being treated by the same doctors he trained. it's not known if he'll come to emory hospital for care. writebol two weeks ago spoke with us. >> probably the darkest moment was the night they put me on the airplane. it was a very -- not knowing whether i'd see my husband again, not knowing whether i would live on that flight. it was a very dark moment. >> doctors had told writebol it could be another six weeks before she's 100% healthy. >> a lot of people are wondering, would you go back? >> we haven't made a decision yet. >> but you're considering it. >> of course. those are our liberian brothers i think the world's reaction and our reaction right now is not to stay away but to help.

>> reporter: with the cdc saying the ebola is spiraling out of control, roughly 200 american aid workers remain in west africa. jeff glor, cbs news, charlotte, north carolina. this morning hurricane norbert is strengthening in the pacific about 200 miles south of the baja peninsula. norbert has sustained winds of 80 miles per hour and is headed northwest on a track that's expected to take it parallel to the u.s. pacific coast. tropical moisture will bring heavy rain to the southwest and possible flooding beginning sunday. on the "cbs moneywatch" now, ex-mayor michael bloomberg gets back to business, and neiman marcus takes on the big apple for the first time. jill wagner is at the new york stock exchange with that and more. good morning, jill. >> good morning, anne-marie. former mayor michael bloomberg is returning to the company he founded after 12 years as mayor. bloomberg is coming back to take over the financial data and news service in january.

bloomberg's company has grown to more than 15,000 people in 73 countries. he is worth more than $32 billion. tesla motors is expected to build a huge new factory in nevada. the company will spend $5 billion on the facility near reno to make batteries for its electric vehicles. nevada beat out california, texas, arizona, and new mexico. to win that plant. it will employ more than 6,000 worke workers. here on wall street investors will watch for weekly jobs data. the dow rose 10 points wednesday, the nasdaq was down 25 and the s&p 500 fell a point. a 4% drop in apple helped push the marks lower. samsung unveiled two new smartphones. the galaxy edge got the big buzz. it displace tools, tool bars and even games.

mcdonald's and other companies will be targeted by worker sit-ins and other labor protests. they're escalating their campaign to utilize workers. they want to raise the minimum wage to $15 an hour. and for the first time luxury retailer neiman marcus will build a store in new york city. a 250,000 square-foot extort will be in a new retail complex in manhattan. that project will also include shops, restaurants, apartments, a school, and a luxury hotel. the neiman marcus store will open in 2018. anne-marie? >> all right. jill wagner at the new york stock exchange. thanks a lot, jill. coming upton "morning news," surviving a shark attack. >> we sat in the water for about 30 minutes and it was the scariest 30 minutes of my life. >> two kayakers talk about their encounter with a great white. this is the "cbs morning news."

center. earlier this week more than 30 teens escaped from the facility. about 20 teens, some of who were involved in monday's escape, are roaming the grounds, refusing to return to their dorms. police have surrounded the center and none of the teens have left, but six remain at large from monday's escape. and two women survived a terrifying shark attack off the coast of massachusetts. they were kayaking off whitehorse beach in plymouth yesterday south of boston as they took pictures of seals. the women were attacked by great white which took a bite out of one of their kayaks. miraculously, they were not hurt but they were very scared. >> it came up from underneath my best friend's boat and it reached out of the water, grabbed our boat and flipped us over. >> the most terrifying part was the shark attack was so quick. he's there and he was gone. it was sitting in the water wonderings if he was going to come back. >> a great white shark was spot

irish catholics have celebrated st. patrick's day with parade since 1762, and since the 1990s, gay groups have protested the rule keeping them from marching under their own banner. this video is from 1995 when more than a dozen gay rights protesters were arrested at the parade. but next march 17th, the ban will be lifted. the private committee that runs the parade will allow a single gay group out at nbcuniversal to march with a banner identifying it as an lgbt advocacy organization. the committee saying this change of tone and expanded inclusiveness is a gesture of goodwill to the lgbt community all the wail remaining loyal to the church teachers and the principals that have guided it for so many decades. network executives have been urging parade organizers to lift

forecast in some cities around the country. well, the hunt is on for a poisonous alibino in southern california. it escaped from a home in thousand oaks. it's already struck once. >> reporter: residents sate's the most surprising threat in this kmurnlt of thousand oaks they have ever phased. a cobra on the loose. >> a neighbor comes walking over. do you guys own a pet cobra. i said did you just say cobra? >> reporter: their family dog tico was bitten on the neck after it slithered in the yard. >> she went out and tried to call him back. as she weren't out she saw the whitesnake in an attack posture. >> reporter: tico is doing well

after being rushed to the animal hospital on monday. they spent hours canvassing several blocks in the neighborhood on the hunt for the elusive snake and its owner. >> initially we're told it very likely belongs to a particular person. he denied owning it or owning anything about it. >> reporter: rick eddy was the last person to see the cobra, crossing the road and going into a field. >> i thought it was a piece of rope and as i was passing it, i thought that's not a rope, that's a snake. >> it's incredibly irresponsible to have such an animal. >> reporter: officials have located anti-venom from the san diego zoo just in case the cobra attacks another victim. david begnaud for cbs news, thousand oaks, california. well, in sports an early morning finish between two of tennis's biggest stars. djokovic and andy murray battle

google is using modern technology to map acres and acres of wilderness. as chip reid reports it's part of an effort to preserve some of america's natural beauty. >> reporter: they tower 300 feet into the sky, the length of a football field. and at almost 2,000 years old, northern california's old growth redwoods are some of the tallest and oldest living things on earth. ben bloom is the land manager here at the headwaters forest preserve. there's a blue stripe on that enormous tree behind you.

what exactly does that mean? >> that's a mark to cut. that tree was going to be cut down until headwaters was protected and acquired by the state in 1999. >> reporter: that beautiful tree was going to be cut down. >> that and every one in this stand. >> reporter: there are more than 3,000 acres of old growth redwoods in this remote area far from the beaten path. the wilderness society's warren alfred is capturing the beauty of this forest for others to see. he's a volunteer with google's backtrack trekker program. the tech company started the initiative last year to allow people to see a panoramic view of scenic but hard-to-reach places. alfred's backpack is equipped with 15 high-definition cameras which are constantly taking pictures. >> a lot of times i'll look at a still photograph and i'll think, what's on the other side of that. so this thing actually allows us to go through the landscape and give people a chance to really look around.
