from the cbs broadcast center in philadelphia. this is cbs-3 "eyewitness news". it is the most wonderful time of the year. we are just six short hours away from. >> eagles season opening kick off right here on cbs-3. new this morning, victim fights back after robber pulls a gun on a man inside a chain east food store. >> lightning sparks a fire, part of the storms that left their mark on the area. today is sunday, september 7th. good morning, i'm todd quinones. meteorologist, carol ericson. >> good morning to you, todd, boy, tell you what, we really cleared out the heat and humidity. we did it in pretty violent way with the storms, we saw wind gusts over ooh miles an hour, three quarter inhale in a couple of spots, some rain,

but broke the heat. and that's probably the good news for you today. let's take a look outside. and see few clouds still remaining, they will be leaving, as well. the day will be brightening up beautifully at the shore more than likely the last people to finally see some sunshine as that front is stalling, and moving gradually away. but look at this. this is what's coming. look out in kutztown, look at the sun come up. 60 degrees, absolutely beautiful day. you finally have gotten rid of your clouds there, that's the trend for everybody else. look at this trend, though, this is how it looks right now this is how it look thunderstorms rolling through the area, dropping rain, hail, lightning, it was something. but they're gone. left with temperatures in the 60s right now. and we're not going to be going all that high today. and, in fact, this morning, already 10 degrees cooler than we were yesterday at this point. our afternoons will be far cooler. the dew points, in the 50's, now, yesterday they were in

the 70s, that's why it was just un believe bridge humid and uncomfortablement felt like 100 degrees yesterday afternoon. >> this afternoon it will feel and be just about 80 degrees. how nice. how long can we keep this going? let's try it for awhile. i'll let you know with the eyewitness weather seven day forecast coming up. todd? all right, carol. new this morning, robbery ends in gunfire in north philadelphia. investigators tell us a man was trying to rob a customer inside the chinese store when the customer pulled out a gun, shooting the alleged robber in the neck. it happened at 27th and lehigh avenue at around 11:00 last night. the robbery suspect is in critical condition. police have the arm custom nerve custody who claims self-defense. no word on any charges at this time. police are also investigating a shooting in the fairhill neighborhood. investigators tell "eyewitness news", a 28 year old man was shot four times. the victim was shot once in the leg and three times in the

head. it happened at around 10:30 last night in the 3400 block of north american street and west ontario. the victim is in critical condition. no word on a suspect at this time. authorities say a lightning strike from the storm started a house fire in abington, monday good morning are you county saturday. take a look at this, five on the 1800 block of harding avenue. the flames badly damaged the house, police say, no one was home at the time of the lightning strike. the red cross says it is helping two people affected by that fire. the storms also packed drenching rains and heavy wind, this eyewitness cam video, from tom, shows shoppers running for cover in voorhees, new jersey. and of course, you can send us your eyewitness cam storm picks on the cbs philly facebook page, and also on twitter. you can use the hashtag cbs-3 storm. but police be sure it is safe to go outside before you take a picture. one man is dead, and another is critically injured,

after a shooting in philadelphia's kingsessing neighborhood. police tell us, one victim was shot once in the chest, and once in the arm. he died at the scene. the other victim was shot in his head and chest. he's in the hospital in extremely critical condition. the shooting happened just after 8:00 last night in the 5300 block of angora terrace. the detectives have recovered the murder weapon, the search is on for the gunman. a pennsylvania state trooper is injured in a crash in wayne, delaware county, police say the cruiser was in pursuit when it collided with a karat madsonford and county line road. the officer and the occupants in the other vehicle suffered minor injuries, no word on why the trooper was in pursuit. the anticipation is just about over for phillies sports fans. we're just hours away from the eagles home opener, the birds face the jacksonville jaguires. syma chowdhry live this morning, at lincoln finance a.m. field, where diehard fans are already tailgating.

good kids. this he would be up in the stands yelling and cheering. and they're not here. >> seamus digney, cullen keffre, ryan lesher killed in a car crash last weekend after the suv they were riding in rolled over. police say 15 year old was driving. parents say some of the players came straight from one of the burrials to the field. >> it was a little tough on him. i am just proud of the way he handled himself. >> for some, support came in the form of the opposing team, bensalem high school cheerleaders gave council rock south ribbons to show their condolances. >> helps the girls feel a little bit better after the ones who were close to the boys. >> after a moment of pause for their piers. >> they're no longer with us, but they'll always and part of the council rock family. >> life at council rock south must go on without them. >> still a lot of heart break, you know, and it is still a lot of uncertainty, but it is getting better.

>> reporter: coming offer the field these are the most smiles we've seen in the council rock community in over a week. a much deserved pick me up after a week of sadness. noel mcclaren, cbs-3 "eyewitness news". family, friends, will say good-bye to joan rivers today at private funeral. this is video of joan river's daughter melissa, leaving her mother's apartment in new york city yesterday. the legendary comedian service will be at synogogue in new york. joan rivers died on thursday, a week after she stopped breathing during a outpatient procedure at a clinic. an initial autopsy did not determine the official cause every death. the 2015 world meeting of families is a year away. today philadelphia archbishop charles chaput unveils official image and prayerment the archbishop will be joined by artist kneel car land, our own pat ciarrocchi had a chance to visit consider lynn at his studios last month where he showed us his sketch for the project.

their tour guide was retired nypd officer, arnold romo. he was in the south tower when it collapsed. his son, keith, died in the north tower. i firmly believe he's warning out for me, and this gives me place to sit and be calm, and to catch your breath, and un scramble your head, and that's how important this place is. and i think most of the families would agree. >> each year garden of reflection memorial picks theme for the memorial. this year's theme, heroism moves. also, happening today, the first of 9/11 heroes run 5k races, hosted by the travis manion foundation. manion, from bucks county, was ambushed and killed in iraq back in 2007. today's events take place at doylestown's font hill park. norristown's montgomery county courthouse, cooper river park stadium in pennsauken, and chester county courthouse in west chester.

nasa says a newly discovered asteroid will pass very close to earth this weekend. this diagram from that is cents a shows the space rock's projected path. it is expected to get about 25,000 miles from the earth. the 60-foot long space rock won't hit any satellites or earth, but the fly by will give astronomers chance to stud at this, named 2014rc, the asteroid was first spotted only last month. and parts of the midwest are cleaning up after storms swept through that region, in southeast michigan, heavy rains and winds knocked out power to hundreds of thousands of people. the storms also disrupted two church festivals, winds brought down large tents at both events, in dearborn heights, five people were hurt, one person seriously. well, fortunately for us, the bad weather is behind us, right, carol? >> yes, it is, we have much better weather. looks how nice it looks outside, todd.

we have blue skies, and as we go through the day, fewer and fewer clouds will be out there, looking great, where we still see them, down along the shore areas, at this point, and you can see, quite a few clouds, right now, gloomier start there, but you, too, will be starting to get into the sun and the clouds, a little later on, then we move over to our neighborhood weathernet work. we find apparently todd has been doing wheel east out here on the beach before he came into work today. but i'm sure a lot of people will be laying on the sand today, enjoying themselves. this water is pretty mild. we've got temperatures in the mid to upper 70s, along the coastal areas, in the water, so, it will be a great day to get out to the beaches today. we have temperatures that are comfortable, and storm conditions that are gone. this is a look, this is the last 12 hours, i just keep showing you this, because it is just an amazing look at how we finally ended that heat that made it feel like it was 100 degrees yesterday. this is how it looks now, no problems, thousand looked 12 hours ago, all of tees storms moving on through.

thunder, lightning, hail, downpours, wind gusts, up to 50 miles an hour, in some spots. but that's yesterday's weather. today's weather, you will like a lot better a lot cool they are morning, some fen degrees cooler, 66 degrees, right now, in philadelphia. and our afternoon is going to be some 23 degrees cooler than it was yesterday afternoon. look back to the west. we have temperatures in the 60s right now, our air mass is coming from this direction, where it is in the 40's, eat's, so expect a very comfortable night tonight. and the next couple of days, as well. high pressure building in. where it is park, we start to get the winds coming down out of the north. so it is a drying direction. it is a cooling direction. and temperatures today, they may hit 80 degrees, but still, we're going to say upper 70s, just because after that heat yesterday, we need that psychological break. that front, well, it is casino every just sits around out in the atlantic. then of course, wouldn't you know, two losers find one another. the front's out here. this low pressure system, and

they're going to meet up as we often finds, and that could be triggering some rain showers, some gusty winds, as you go into monday afternoon, and tuesday, especially along these shore areas. maybe specially delaware, but also the jersey shore cannot be out of the picture for some gusty northeasterly winds, and some heavy rain possible on that monday-tuesday timetable. our game time looks beautiful out there for the eagles game today. then tomorrow we get few clouds, especially philadelphia, to the south and east, and this picture may fill in with some rain showers, so we have to continue to monitor that for that monday-tuesday timetable. but the temperatures are going to be very, very comfortable this week. dew points, 59 right now, but they're going into the lower 50's, which puts it somewhere between pleasant and awesome. so we've got weather to enjoy, the ocean as i mentioned, great, in the 70s, the air temperature, just about the same. winds out of the north, drying direction, 80 degrees today, 62 tonight, next couple of days, just ideal. with temperatures in the 70s,

and maybe around 80, looks like the warmest day so far is thursday in the middle 80s. todd? >> carol, looks good. time now to see how traffic is moving here is ann evans at the cbs-3 traffic center. good morning again, ann. >> good morning again todd. looking at the blue route again. this is right at the broomall exit, exit nine. you can see the construction zones set up. and of course, you can see the road crews right out there, they're working on the blue route, blue route northbound between exit nine, broomall, exit 13 saint david's, left lane just squeezing by, and that highway reduced to that one left lane. and we do have slow traffic on and off, in fact, it is slow again. not a lot of room for traffic to pass now. this pattern will be picked up in time for as the eagles traffic lets out around 5:00 p.m. it will be put back in place from 9:00 p.m. tonight to 5:00 a.m. monday morning. so it will be pick up terrible poor harley at five p.m. and put back in place 9:00 p.m. tonight. okay, so we have to put one it just for little more. but the highway will look much

better after they're done. we move the traffic cam again, and this is the schuylkill expressway right at girard avenue. the schuylkill to the right of your screen, no delays or problems on the schuylkill, it is behaving itself through philadelphia, and the suburbs, if you look to the left, that's martin luther king drive. that's shutdown between the parkway and the falls bridge for recreational activities today. and on one more time, to the ben franklin bridge, there you go. you can see construction cones there. that's westbound heading into philadelphia to the right of your screen, and we've construction two right lanes closed, there are delays, between the admiral wilson boulevard and the down side of the bridge. that is the latest from the cbs-3 traffic center, i'm inch avenue, now, todd, back to you. ann, thank you. police in canada say a nine year old boy stole a city bus, and went for a joy ride saturday morning, eyewitnesses describe seeing the boy get on board the empty bus at a maintenance shop t drove for two blocks, hitting a truck, and another bus, before stopping on a curb. that is when a good samaritan

better than cats. >> okay. now, if your animal tested positive for lime, one step, you need to tell your family doctor. >> true. people have a lot of lyme disease, can easily get misdiagnosed or not diagnosissed. >> so you treat a dog who has a blood test of yes, you've got lime's, but isn't limping, isn't showing the other sign of lyme, what? >> still controversy whether to trees these. usually when they present with symptoms, they have painful joint, they have a fever, they are limping and they really hurt. i am inclined to try and treat most of the dogs that turn out positive, because there are some evidence that symptoms can come around three, four months after they get in contact with this tick. >> okay, so, check them over, maybe as you get the ticks off fast enough, they don't have time to transmit? >> that's the key it, really does take about 24 hours, so if you can get them off right away, that's a big plus. >> this is interesting. studying, looking at the your

dog from the vet school, they say that a dog recognizing its owner that he loves, will wag his tail to the right, when he recognizes unfamiliar dog or threatening situation, more likely to wag to the left. >> well there is particular study did say that. actually showed that other dogs can sense whether the dog they're approaching is moving his tail to the right to the left and know whether to be comfortable or have anti at this, still just one study. so i'm a little, you know, i'm wait to go see little more information. but right now i am walking to the right. >> good. because you are feeling comfortable. all right, so assuming you can check when you look at your dog, they don't just go like this with their tail, they sometimes will because i checked it. wagging to the right, happy to see me. sense of illness. a loft times you can pick up what's wrong with your pet based on the odor of their breath? >> yes, the breath for periodontal disease, bat teed, sometimes diabetes, sometimes sweetness to it, sometimes

when it is supposed to be 80. let's look outside, finds some brightening, we will fine continuing brightening. right now few clouds out there, but not that big a deal. it will be absolutely beautiful. i want to take you out to the neighborhood weathernet work, 62 degrees in royce forwards, we turn the lights on there. look how pretty that day starts out. and the same story in nazareth, look at that, as the skies brighten, and you will be finding all of that brightening, moving from west to east, just as we saw that front move from west to east. yesterday. speaking of which, this is loop over the last 12 hours, you can see, we saw so much lightning, we saw the rain, hail, winds, it was a lot. when it stops right now, this is what we're dealing w mostly you're seeing a lot of the clouds right along the shore areas, but boy it was an active, active, late afternoon, and evening time period. those storms came across, and finley ended that heat that we saw yesterday. sixty-six in philadelphia, seems to be casino of popular number, a lot of temperatures

play the jacksonville jaguires at 1:00. a lot of folks predicting a win, but you know, also looking past today. they are looking at the season. looking at what could be toward the end of the season, a loft people talking about superbowl. talk about nick foles. this is his third year with the eagles. this is his first time starting in the season opener. lots of folks are predicting good year for lesean mccoy, as well. he is predicted to be the second favorite to the lead the nfl in rushing. of course, lots of folks are excited about chip kelly. didn't really know what to make of him last time, first year with the eagles, now, coming back this year after getting us in the post-season, lots of folks excited to see what he'll bring to the table this season. and i talk to some folks tailgating, and asked them, what they make of this season coming up. >> i think we're going all the way. this is our year. >> reporter: why is that? you just a feeling? >> i think we got nick foles, we still got shady, maclin, all of the new guys, think we got it. chip kelly he is the future.

eagles and jags at 1:00. again only right here on cbs-3. first day of school for students in the cash strapped philadelphia school district tomorrow. several cuts have been made to ensure school starts on time. students can expect to see larger class sizes, and several amenities gone due to the budget cuts. the district faces a 81 million-dollar deficit. officials also say schools will be cleaned and repaired less often while it awaits words on more funding. philadelphia police are investigating a home invasion robbery involving two mask gunmen in west passyunk. detectives say, they broke through the front window after home on the 1900 block of 19th street saturday morning. the suspects stole $1,500 from several people inside the home. no arrests have been made. armed robbery caught on tape in kingsessing. take a look at this surveillance video. the robbery took place just before 1:00 a.m., on

august 28th, at the too good food mart in the 1300 block of south 58th street. two armed robbers enters the store demanding cashment one of the suspects had guns drawn on cashiers, while the other ran behind the counter to grab the cash in several packs of cigarettes. both suspects got away on foot. a search underway off jamaica northeast coast for private plane that crashed in the ocean friday. the plane was caring a rochester new york couple who apparently lost consciousness in the air. cbs news correspondent wendy gillette has the latest. >> search teams are scouring the water off the jamaica's northeast coast looking for wreckage of the small private plane that crashed friday. so far they found an oil slick, and some floating debris. the single engine turbo turbo prepare caring larry ann jane took off rochester new york, investigators believe larry was at the controls. he radioed a problem to air traffic controllers around

10:00 a.m. >> air traffic told the pilot to dogs ends to lower altitude. shortly after that, the plane went silent. us air defense scrambled fighter jets to shadow the unresponsive plane. they saw the windshield had frosted over, and the pilot was slumped over the controls. conditions consistent with oxygen deprivation. >> reporter: the plane flew in and out of cuban air space before it ran out of fuel and crashed friday afternoon. glazer's were well known in rochester. larry real estate developer, jane was an entrepreneur. the couple's three children released a statement devastated by the tragic and sudden loss of their parents. wendy gillette, cbs-3, "eyewitness news".

president obama decides to delay any executive action on immigration until after the november congressional elections. white house officials say the president believes taking steps on his own during the midterm campaign would politicize the issue and hurt efforts to pass a broad overhaul. immigration advocates say they they're disappointed and some critics say the president is choosing politics over people. a cease-fire between ukrainian forces and russian-back rebels appears to be holding. how much, the trues still appears fragile, with both sides claiming violations. the president of the ukraine said the trues was struck after a personal conversation with russian president, vladmeere putin. septa drivers are showing off their skills on an obstacle course other than broad street. we'll check out the annual septa bus rodeo next. also ahead, so popular, they're actually handling out lottery tickets to get it. we'll meet the man behind the 99 pack case of beer.
